Windows server 2016 licensing - license mobility

$

Hi,

I have a virtualization infrastructure with clustered 2 hosts, and I want to know how to license Windows server that is installed on my virtual machines. Windows server can be moved from one host to the other and that involves License Mobility.

My software reseller told me that I can buy Datacenter core licenses, but if I have only a small number of VMs (which is the case), I also have the cheaper alternative to buy Windows standard core licenses. Now, he told me I HAVE to buy them withSoftware Assurance (SA), to allow the VMs to move from one host to the other. I know that SA is required for SQL server to be moved from one host to the other, but not sure if this is the case for Windows server.

Thank you for your help

Hyper-v: Live Migration Network

$

We have a hyper-v cluster with 3 netwoks (1x Cluster and client (N1), 2x Cluster Only (N2,N3))

On Failover Cluster Manager we've configured N2 as network to use in Live Migration, but If I open settings on Hper-V Manager and I go to "Live Migrations" settings I can see N2 and N3 as networks to use for Live migrations, also N3 as first

What is the difference ??

Installing Hyper-V role fails on Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi,

I am trying to install the Hyper-V role on our company's server (with Windows 2012 R2 installed with Standard license).

But for some reason after the progress bar has reached the end - and it does its required restart then after it starts up again, it says that it was unable to install it and then rolls back.

When I checked the Event Viewer logs then I saw an error such as this:

"Update Microsoft-Hyper-V-Offline of package Microsoft-Hyper-V-ServerEdition-Package failed to be turned on. Status: 0x800f0922.

I feel like I should add to this that we have been failing some Windows Updates in a similar way, it restarts and then rolls back. I don't know if those can be connected somehow.. But it feels to me like there could be a connection, perhaps?
I tried installing it through the Graphical interface the first time and then saw that somebody suggested trying to install it through PowerShell, but unfortunately that made no difference.

Also, the server has other roles and services running as well - we are trying to run only one Virtual machine on top of all that. I tested a similar setup on a random desktop computer and I had no problems getting the Hyper-V role installed. The one that I tested didn't have as many features installed, but I tried to make the conditions similar.

Kind regards,

Rauno S.

Is there any way to delete merged snapshots? to claim the disk space again.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 Guest loses network connectivity during DPM backup

We are experiencing a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V network connectivity issue, within our remote Hyper-V infrastructure, which is similar tohttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/974909 andhttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2263829

Our Hyper-V host is a Dell PowerEdge R730, running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2, Standard x64 Edition, with Gen1 guests, running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2, Standard x64 Edition. The system is located at a remote site that has a local Comcast 20Mbps/20Mbps connection directly into the Florida LambdaRail that feeds back to our main campus. While the system is hosting multiple guests, our issue is only with the file server VM.

The problematic guest has 2.5TB of dedup data that is being backed up using Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2016 over the WAN. At issue, the guest will lose its networking stack. The network connectivity can only be restored by “Saving” the guest and then “Starting” it or performing a full restart of the guest.

I am confident in stating that Microsoft Data Protection Manager agent triggers the bug. We have never seen a guest lose connectivity without the DPM agent. We have removed VMQ (fully disabled physical NIC, virtual adapter and the team). So, the Broadcom VMQ “is enabled” problem, as describe at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2986895 , does not apply. Besides, we have seen this issue with system that have Intel and Broadcom NICs.

We have been experiencing this issue for over a year and on multiple systems.

Drive Allocation Unit Size

When setting up my Hyper-V clustered nodes, each node has (2) RAID 1 525GB SSD drives for the Server OS and is attached to shared storage. I know the Allocation unit size for all the shared drives should be 64K for SQL Server and for VHDx files. However, what about the Allocation unit size for the OS drives on the Hyper-V host OS and the VM OS on the VHDx. Are they okay to leave with the default or should they be 64K too?

Questions about throttling Hyper-V Replica traffic

Hi,

Plan on setting a bandwidth limit on Hyper-V Replica for a customer of ours using the New-NetQosPolicy cmdlet as described here.

I plan on using either the port or the vmms.exe method of throttling as the Replica server is on the same subnet as the Primary.

I just have a couple of questions though:

1. If I use the vmms method, what other functions will be affected besides the Replica traffic and Live Migration?

2. If I use the port method, will it also affect the traffic of the Virtual Machines using the same port?

Triple Display and Client Hyper-V

Hi,

I suspect I've exhausted all the options but just in case someone has a different ideas. I'm a developer that uses a Dell Workstation with 3 30" displays.

I swap annually between VMWare and Client Hyper-V because on the one hand I love the performance of Hyper-V but on the other I love the flexibility of VMWare Custom Resolutions.

In the past I've opened up the Client Hyper-V files and modified them but that's had it's limitations.

I've also defined the three screens as a single big screen using the NVidia function I have but that didn't work either very well.

I've tried working with multiple virtual desktops but that's does some odd things too.

I don't need the complete scalability of VMWare only the ability to use one of the follow resolutions defined at connection time.

1 Single Screen = 3840 x 2160

2 Screens = 7680 x 2160

3 Screens = 11520 x 2160

Does anyone have any ideas how I could achieve something useable so I could come back to Hyper-V for good.

Thanks

John

Error in connecting to HyperV Server

Greetings my fellow Tech Guru's

I recently installed Windows HyperV 2012 on a physical box HPZ600 and Joined the existing windows Active Directory domain, add the computer on to my Debian DNS Server. No Errors. I Installed a Windows Server 2012R2 to Manage the HyperV on VMware player. Which is on a different WS and connected to the same domain.  I have Installed the HyperV Manager in windows Server 2012R2 which is running on VMware.

This particular server which I installed solely to Manage my HyperV Server is also joined to the domain.  I.e Both the HyperV 2012 Server and the Server 2012R2 STD are in the same domain using the same Active Directory administrative username password

Problem

When I try to connect to the HyperV server from the Server2012, I get the attached error.

Error when trying to attach USB Hard Drive to Virtual Machine

Hello,

Since about 4 months ago, we are having trouble when trying to connect a USB drive to our virtual machines.

We have 2 Dell PowerEdge R430 servers with Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V installed, when I connect a USB Drive while the physical machine is running, I can't attach the USB drive to the virtual machines, for it to work I need to restart the physical machine with the USB drive already plugged in, after doing this I can connect the USB drive to the virtual machine again, but, if for some reason I unplug and plug it again, it shows me this error:

NOTE: I was going to insert an image here, but Technet wouldn't allow me, because it says my account is not verified, so I've uploaded it to: h t t p s : //s14.postimg.org/hwk41jykx/1471635468078_remmina_2016_12_2_19_27_55_491706.png

As you can see in the above screenshot, the disk is set Offline at Disk Management and I'm using Physical Disk Option at SCSI section in Hyper-V manager, this used to work before, but it started occuring this error at some point that I don't remember, maybe after any update, I can't say for sure.

This same error also occurs at the other server, which is equal to this one, but with different virtual machines.

I couldn't find any details on event viewer, so I can't figure out the reason for this error.

Please help, we use to change the backup media every week and it's obviously nonsense to reset the physical server once a week, every time we have to exchange the disk.

Let me know if you need any more details.

Sorry for the poor english.

I am getting this error while creating the VM all of a sudden on my Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v.

I could create a vhd seperately and also create a vm without vhd and point the vhd which provides temporary fix

Any Thoughts

I was trying to install a VM running Win 7 on a WS 2012 Hyper-V Host but there seems to be a problem with compatibility. My end goal is having a Virtual Desktop for our office that is at a remote location. I can get the software installed with no problems. But when I try to do a windows update  it will never go through. Then when I tried to finish the Virtual Desktop configuration it said that it wouldn't work. Can anyone please help me?

Is there event logs for when a user changes the amount of CPU's on a machine or the amount of RAM on a virtual machine and so on?

Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V November 2016 Update makes saving state instable

$

I have installed a new Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V environment.
Intel i7-6800K, 64GB RAM, LSI MegaRAID 9361-8i, RAID-6 (5x 1TB SSD)

I was observing that Hyper-V guests are resetted instead of saving and restoring state.
This happend in 7 of 10 Hyper-V Host reboots.

Making some tests, it seems to turn out, that the problem is not present without the November update kb3200970.
After installing the update, the guests are not correctly restored on some reboots.
There is no hint in the eventlogs. No error, no warning, no information.

Changing the shutdown option for the guest to "shutdown" instead of saving state works as expected. The guest is correctly shutted down and restarted again on every reboot.

I have reinstalled the complete system about 7 times, and the problem was always present after the update.

im confused between hyper resynchnization and replication its the replication steps will do via resynchnization  or resynchnization  is anther thing ?

for example when check in (Automatically start resynchtoization only during the following hours) and type hours the n the replication update from primary to secondary well occurs only during that interval?

NIC lose performance after it's made it to a virtual switch

$

On a physical server we have 2 10GB cards.
When we run the tests before we made  a network adapter to a virtual switch, we get 9.15 Gbits / sec
When we create the NIC to a virtual switch in the hyper-v, we lose about 50% of the speed when a test 4.26 Gbits / sec

If I run a test on the second card that is not a virtual switch I get 9.15 Gbits / sec.

We have tried everything with all possible settings. No anti-virus installed on any of the test is engines. Network cards have the latest firmware and drivers.

According to me there is no logic in that you lose 50% performance  if the network card is an virtual switch.

Does anyone know why and what to do?

VM problems after moving to another Hyper-V host

$

Good evening everyone,

I've got very interesting problem. My Hyper-V hosts are Windows Server 2012 R2 and the guests are Windows Server 2012 R2, too. The first one (Dell R720 XD  - host A) hosts the infrastructure machines, such as DC, Exchange, file server, proxy... Second one, is the machine with a bit newer hardware (Dell R730xd - host B). I want to move Exchange VM to it. The hosts are not clustered.

Host A slowly runs out of disk space and Exchange VM virtal disk for database runs out of space too. So I wanted to move to another host and expand the VHDX which has Exchange DB on it. Pretty simple task, I've done it a lot of times, but...

I turn off the Exchange VM, copy the VM folder to the host B - after that I complete the import/register in place process and the VM starts. The problem is that, when I start the machine, I have problem with the services that are set to start manually, for example the "Virtual Disk Service". I just wanted to expand the VHDX in Disk management and saw that the service cannot start at all.

I tried to start all the other services in services.msc but without success.

One other thing. I manage to login to that Exchange VM with a domain credentials. But when I try to login as a local user, I login but I have only the black screen. I can start Task manager and see that Explorer.exe and all the other services are started. I can manually run notepad.exe or write.exe, but nothing happens when I start explorer.exe.

When I go back to the old host and start Exchange VM, everything works fine. I am confused, please help.

Thank you in advance,
Srdjan Stevic

Am I right in thinking that both host disks AND guest must be Server 2016 for replication of shared vhds(ets) disks to work?

Not easy to find that simple requirement?!

Hi,

I have a dynamic vhdx iSCSI share. I gave it more space than the container partition have and it reached the size of the parent. Now I can't connect to it using iSCSI neither attach the vhd. Disk managemtn and diskpart gave me an error 'Incorrect function'. Is there any way to repair it and get back the data?
