Hyper V machine not starting after VHD size increase
Hi,
One of our vm's secondary VHD data drives needed increasing so i did that but then found out that there are also avhd files so it has now broken the chain. I have tried the vhdtool.exe repair but it says that the child and parent ID's do not match. Any ideas as im pretty lost on what to do now :(
Error message attached.
Nested Virtualizartion with Server 2016 - Hos to disable Virtualization Based Security (VBS)?
Hi,
I have tested to se if I can run nested hyper-v, but i found that the "Virtualization Based Security" is running. Hosts with Virtualization Based Security (VBS) enabled cannot expose virtualization extensions to guests. You must first disable VBS
in order to preview nested virtualization.
So I tried to disable the VBS with an GPO "Turn On Virtualization Based Security",but it did not work. So how do I disable Virtualization Based Security (VBS) on an Server 2016?

Ping time latency unstable
Hi,
How to explain ping time unstable? It is ping from hyper v host to hyper v internal guest.
OS is running Server 2012 r2 , HP server Gen8 and VMQ disable on Host.
Update hyper host Network drivers? it is running Lync server have RTP packet so the network delay is very sensitive.
Thanks.

Compare-VM not reporting Incompatibilities
I'm trying to migrate a bunch of guest VMs from 2012 servers to 2012R2. I'm running Compare-VM to get a Compatibility Report. The issue that I'm having is that no matter what incompatibilities I have, there only exist one incompatibility. This is message ID 21024 'Virtual machine migration operation for 'guestVM' failed at migration source 'srcServer'.
I can see on the destination server that there are events in the log for the actual incompatibilities, be they processor incompatibility, incorrect network name, etc.
How can I convince Compare-VM to return the actual incompatibilities?
Thanks

Snapshot/Backup of Domain-Controller VMs not possible on Server 2016 Hyper-V Host?
Hello,
we have two Server 2008 R2 domain controllers running as VMs on a Server 2016 Hyper-V host.
We can't take snapshots of these VMs, getting Event-IDs 3280 from Hyper-V-Worker and 18012 from Hyper-V-VMMS, which also means we can't take backups.
We have tested this, and the error occurs as soon as ther server becomes a domain controller.
We can take snapshots without issues of all ohter VMs, which are no comain controllers.
Any ideas?
Kind regards
Network consideration with S2D HyperConverge
Hi,
I am setting up a S2D hyper-converge solution on 2016.
Traditionally, when we set up a hyper-v host, we tend to split the traffic for management/live migration/cluster/storage and etc into different NICs.
With S2D coming into the picture and all network being converged over a pair of 10G network, I realise that SMB tends to use all available inter-cluster communication networks.
Does it still make sense to create different vNICs to cater to live migration or management?
Do i need 1 vNIC or 2 vNIC for SMB? I saw some guides specifying only 1 vNIC for SMB while some requires 2. Do they need to be on the same vlan or separate vlan?
Thanks

File VHD is always growing
Hi All,
I have Hyper-V windows server 2008 R2 with 2 virtual server installed.
Vhd file of one virtual server is always growing whereas there was no file growth in the virtual server, so I always compact the vhd, but the vhd file will grow again.. again.. again...
How to know what the cause?
Note: Before I already ask this topic to windows forum --> https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/id-ID/12ee3755-c600-4244-8bfc-e360847f6e30/file-vhd-is-always-growing?forum=virtualserver

Cannot create VM after sometime, but after reboot it's working
Dear All,
I have a strange thing on my new Hyper-V server. After few hours I'm not able to create / move VM on this Hyper-V without getting this error:
The server encountered an error while creating New Virtual Machine.
Creating the virtual machine failed.
The server is a Windows 2016 server Data center Edition fresh install, all patches are installed and the only installed things are Hyper-V, and backup agent. Storage is on an MSA 1040, i have applied the special permission for account "Virtual Machine".
I'm domain admin. I can navigate the storage whitout error create files, folder ect..
If i reboot the server everything is working fine for a moment then the error re-appears.
Thanks for reading and for helping,
C.
Convert vhdx (2012 R2) to vhds (2016) ?
Could not find any info how to convert them. Need to upgrade HV to 2016, so eventually I can use replication of shared disks
Of course with "liitle" vhdx I can do just d-2-d data copy, but with disk of few Tb I simply do not have same space on array to create them one more time & then wait for data copy to happen
Thanks

HYPER-V Cluster W2012R2 Can't delete VHDX on CSV
'm working on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v. I've just done an EXPORT of a Virtual Machine to a CSV Volume to import later.
But I hanve't performed the import, and when I went to delete the exported folder I've got an access denied error of the VHDX file.
How can I identify which is the process that locks this file and delete it? There no is any Virtual Machine with this file attached on it.
I've restarted the "Hyper-V Virtual management server" service without success.
This is not a permission problem because I've also tried to take ownership to reset permissions, but I'm also getting an 'access denied error'. Also with CACLS command.

Event 19510 Hyper-v-vmms
Can someone please tell me how to resolve this issue? It keep pooping up in the event viewer every 5 mins. New Cluster- 2012 or 2016?
Hi. We currently have a five node Windows Server 2012 cluster (not R2).
We are wanting to create a new cluster in a new location and then migrate the existing VMs to this new cluster.
We have a new server that we built as 2012 and I was planning to evict one of the existing nodes from the old cluster, then move it over to the new location and make a new two node cluster.
The question is, should we create a new 2016 cluster or just do another 2012 cluster?
If we created a 2012 cluster, how hard would it be to convert this to a 2016 cluster down the road? Can you upgrade the nodes one at a time or do you need to upgrade them all at once?
Also, in either case, I was thinking of using Shared Nothing Live Migration (SNLM) to migrate the VMs across. Since this new cluster will be on an entirely different network, would it be easier to export the VMs and them import them at the new location?
Thanks,
Tom
Virtual TPM never locks out
Hi there.
Let me report a problem with the vTPM.
Software used: Hyper-V of Server 2016 datacenter (updated) and win10 1607 as guest machine.
Expected behavior: the virtual TPM would lockout if 32 bad PIN attempts are detected.
Observed behavior: After 32 attempts, you just need to reboot the machine and you have 32 new attempts, a lockout simply never happens.
Please investigate, this is quite dangerous.
--
Furthermore, the same problem happens if win10 1607 is used both as hyper-v host and guest.
Also, the cmdlet get-tpm notices that the lockout counter is rising if we execute, say, 5 incorrect entries and displays those, but the number gets reset to zero if we reboot the system. And no, this is not due to "self healing".
Is there any way to monitor the status of virtual NICs from hyper-v manager?
Hi,
The “status” column in hyper-v manager shows “OK” or “Degraded” for virtual NICs. But it can not tell whether the vNIC is down or up. With powershell command “Get-Adapter”, we could monitor the up/down status of physical NICs. Is there any way to get the up/down status of vNICs similar to that?
KB3206632 breaks 2016 Hyper-V V-TPM
Just ran across an issue with KB3206632 on two lab servers running 2016 Hyper-V. These are E5 V2 servers with a TPM 1.2 module installed and enabled. Issue seems to be identical to the one Win-10 Hyper-V users are having over here.
Upon starting a guest with V-TPM enabled, Hyper-V Manager gives the following message.
An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s).
XXX failed to start
XXX could not initialize
The virtual machine XXX can't start becasuse the host's Isolated User Mode is off.
Unchecking Enable Trusted Platform Module in settings allows the guest to boot but requires inputting the backup key if Bitlocker is enabled.
Uninstalling KB3206632 from the host works on both hosts and all guests so far.
There's also a bunch of events in event log
