Use cmdlet to live migrate VM changing the vNetwork.

Good morning.

I have to live migrate VMs from “Hyper-v on Server 2012” to “Hyper-v Server 2012 R2”.
Well, at the same time I have to migrate all the storage (Config, Snapshots, Pagingfiles and VHDs).
Up to here everything is ok.
At the same time without loose the VMs connectivity I have to change the vNetwork because the vNetworks on the new Hosts are different.

I will use Move-VM powershell cmdlet, example:

Move-VM $VM remoteServer –VirtualMachinePath $Path1 –SnapshotFilePath $Path1 –SmartPagingFilePath $Path1 –IncludeStorage –VHDs @(@{"SourceFilePath" = $OldVHDPath1; "DestinationFilePath" = $NewVHDPath1}, @{"SourceFilePath" = $OldVHDPath2;"DestinationFilePath" = $NewVHDPath2})

When I do it manually through the Hyper-v Console, it ask me to change it:

How can I change vSwitch at the same time that I Move the VM using a cmdlet without loosing connection?

Thanks in advance and have a nice week,
Angel Biurrun.

Cannot upgrade Integration Components of R2 guest on R2 host

Hi,

Some Hyper-V patches require you to upgrade the IC of the guests. In order to keep everything correctly versioned I have created some scripts which raise alerts when the IC of the guest don't match the version of the host. I then go and upgrade the ones that are out of date.

I am having a problem updating SOME of my WS08R2 guests. Some have upgraded fine so I don't understand what is going wrong with these last 2 guests. Here is what happens:

  1. I insert the integration components CD using the Hyper-V manager
  2. I run the setup.exe out of the support\amd64 folder
  3. It gets as far as "Installing Guest Components" when an error appears saying "An error has occurred: One of the update processes returned exit code 14101"

Having a look at the vmguestsetup.log file show the following error:

-->8

Temporary directory = C:\Windows\Temp\{b9054f11-0c3c-44a2-845e-e83b97878e46}
Command Line: "C:\Windows\system32\pkgmgr.exe" /ip /m:"C:\Windows\Temp\{b9054f11-0c3c-44a2-845e-e83b97878e46}\Windows6.1-HyperVIntegrationServices-x64.cab" -quiet -norestart
Process exit code = 0x3715

-->8

So I have then tried running the command line above without the quiet switch and I get the following error:

Operation failed with 0x80073715

The identities of the manifests are identical but their contents are different.

I've tried rebooting the guest prior to installation, I've tried getting SCVMM 2008 R2 to install the guests services for me, I've tried migrating the VM to another node in the cluster and I've tried copying the guest components out of the ISO from another VM host and installing them that way.

Why wont it work?

RetainVhdCopiesOnSource option

what does the -RetainVhdCopiesOnSource option actually do?

i've tested it in conjunction with the move-vmstorage cmdlet and it does not copy the VHD file as it suggests, it moves it

i also can't seem to leverage it with move-vm or when combining move-vm & compare-vm cmdlets together, error is:

Compare-VM : A parameter is invalid. No virtual hard disk can be found with given criteria

i read on a different thread that -RetainVhdCopiesOnSource is actually just for snapshots but TechNet does not state that

NO SAN HyperV Clustering Option

Greetings-

We have a great opportunity to setup a clean HyperV environment.

Our IOPS are very low but we need High Availability and don't want the expense and overhead of a SAN.

We have 3 Dell R630 Servers with dual 14 core CPU, 128 GB RAM and we are ready to install whatever is needed in the 8 Drive Slots in these machines.

Here is the current DPAC Survey:

Disk Throughput 340 MB/s

IOPS 3383 at peak, 2386 at 95%

Read/Write Ratio 93% / 7%

Total Local Capacity 34.76 TB

Free Local Capacity, Used Local Capacity 24.40 TB (70%), 10.36 TB (30%)

Total Shared Capacity 0 GB Free Shared Capacity,

Used Shared Capacity 0 GB (100%), 0 GB (0%)

Total Cores 101 Total Processors 35

What should we do and if/how can we do this using local storage and possibly a robust backup strategy?

Thanks

USB Controller

Hello,

I am really wondering Why Hyper-V (even in 2016) does not support USB controller as VMware does????!!!

I do not think that it is very difficult for Microsoft to make that.

Can someone please explain to me that why??

New Hyper-V Two Node Cluster with Dell MD3200 Shared Storage

I'm about to migrate our environment from 3 physical servers to (2) 2016 Hyper-v Hosts each with 3 VMs. Does anyone know of a good step-by-step For Hyper-V 2016 with shared storage. I've used Hyper-V in test environments before but would like to see any recommendations for configuration and storage locations for Virtual hard disks, configuration files, clustering, joining the host machines to the domain, etc. that I might regret down the road if I set them up wrong now.

to big disk queue during resize or creating VHD

Hi.

I Have hyper-v on windows 2012 R2, witch storage pool (4 disk) na 20 TB thin provisioned volume with deduplication.

On that volume i have one 8TB vhdx file (fixed size). When I try resize that vhdx disk  i got disk queue (on that volume) at about 5-7 with 100% disk activity, and after several minutes i got Event ID 15282 (Filed to resize the virtual disk) and ID 27294.

Its any possibility to limit disk I/O impact during creating or resizing vhd(x) file ? Because looks like the errors occurred when disk queue becomes too high.

Nested Hyper-V and Vlans for Sdn?

Playing  around with sdn in a nested env. i guess I need vlans for the front end and back-end networks. Is that possible to fix in a hyperv nested env?

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

Hi,

I have the problem that when I start a VM with windows server 2012 on a hyper-v v2 host, it takes very long till the VM get bind the static or dynamic ip adress. I tried both, static and dynamic. In every case I see at the event viewer the following error:

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

After a few minutes the VM gets bind the IP an everything works fine. But at the next time I reboot the machine the same failure appear.

Trying to use legacy network adapter results in the same problem. After this I tried to export the vm to a hyper-v v3 host. At first boot time
the problem didn't appear and the vm get's bind the ip adress without problems. Then after upgrading the integration services to hyper-v v3
version the same problem appears but without register it in the event viewer.

Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?

Kind Regards,
Marcus

Retrieving VM subnet mask

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to retrieve the subnet mask of a VM running on Hyper-V.

I know there is an easy way to get the IP address (by using Get-VMNetworkAdapter or with KVP), but I found no way to get the mask. Before giving up, I choose to ask if anyone knows a trick to get it.

Thanks

Network consideration with S2D HyperConverge

$

Hi,

I am setting up a S2D hyper-converge solution on 2016.

Traditionally, when we set up a hyper-v host, we tend to split the traffic for management/live migration/cluster/storage and etc into different NICs.

With S2D coming into the picture and all network being converged over a pair of 10G network, I realise that SMB tends to use all available inter-cluster communication networks.

Does it still make sense to create different vNICs to cater to live migration or management?

Do  i need 1 vNIC or 2 vNIC for SMB? I saw some guides specifying only 1 vNIC for SMB while some requires 2. Do they need to be on the same vlan or separate vlan?

Thanks

Windows Server 2016 is here. But when will Hyper-V Server 2016 RTM be released? Any news?

how to auto failover to another machine's hyper V's virtual machine instead of using manual start or power off?

how to auto failover to another machine's hyper V's virtual machine instead of using manual start or power off?

if no this option, how to write a c# window service to keep tracking the DNS services in virtual machine of hyper V

and if it fail, then it can failover to another backup instance which can be start from power off.

Is there event logs for when a user changes the amount of CPU's on a machine or the amount of RAM on a virtual machine and so on?

Thanks,

get-vm shows integration services version as 0.0

We're running Hyper-V 2016, and have upgraded the VM version of most machines to 8.0, but still have some at 5.0.  There's a mix of generation 1 & generation 2 VMs.

Now, when we run:

get-vm | ft Name, IntegrationServicesVersion

it returns the Integration Services Version as 0.0 for ALL VMs, including the Linux VMs.

In Failover Cluster manager, the Integration Services versions are correct.

A search only returns a single other incident like this, and the fix then was to apply a hotfix that has since been expired/removed.

Nested Virtualizartion with Server 2016 - Hos to disable Virtualization Based Security (VBS)?

$

Hi,

I have tested to se if I can run nested hyper-v, but i found that the "Virtualization Based Security" is running. Hosts with Virtualization Based Security (VBS) enabled cannot expose virtualization extensions to guests. You must first disable VBS in order to preview nested virtualization.

So I tried to disable the VBS with an GPO "Turn On Virtualization Based Security",but it did not work. So how do I disable Virtualization Based Security (VBS) on an Server 2016?

Approach for modifying Hyper-V Networking for Cluster

$

Hi,

I am looking for best high level approach to re-configuring networking for existing Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster.  Here are the highlevel changes.

Today cluster/mgmt/live migration/vmNIC interfaces sit on top of virtual switch (10Gbit x 2 LACP team).

Change would include removing host mgmt interfaces so that they don't sit on top of virtual switch.  Ultimately recreating cluster/mgmt/live migration/ interfaces so that they can use 20Gbit bandwidth vs ~4.6Gbps.  Obviously this means no more logical switch from SCVMM.  Here are the steps I'm thinking for 3 node cluster:

1.  Evict single node from cluster to make networking change on

2.  Remove existing  networking configuration for evicted node from SCVMM, idrac access in place

3.  Re-create host mgmt interfaces/virtual switches with PowerShell

4.  Add node back to cluster.

5.  Repeat process for other nodes.

6.  Benchmark for success

New Cluster- 2012 or 2016?

$

Hi. We currently have a five node Windows Server 2012 cluster (not R2).

We are wanting to create a new cluster in a new location and then migrate the existing VMs to this new cluster.

We have a new server that we built as 2012 and I was planning to evict one of the existing nodes from the old cluster, then move it over to the new location and make a new two node cluster.

The question is, should we create a new 2016 cluster or just do another 2012 cluster?

If we created a 2012 cluster, how hard would it be to convert this to a 2016 cluster down the road? Can you upgrade the nodes one at a time or do you need to upgrade them all at once?

Also, in either case, I was thinking of using Shared Nothing Live Migration (SNLM) to migrate the VMs across. Since this new cluster will be on an entirely different network, would it be easier to export the VMs and them import them at the new location?

Thanks,
Tom

Hyper-V Replica of File Server VM

$

We have a Server 2012 R2 virtual machine which serves as our files server, running on a Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster.

We have another Hyper-V server sitting at our DR site, which we have enabled replication on and done the initial replica of the file server (2TB of data). Said file server has 2 virtual hard disks (VHDX), which have been deduped at the OS level on the virtual machine itself.

We have seen the replica has fallen behind considerably on a number of occasions - this weekend for example it was showing as 500GB worth of data yet to replicate and last successful replication was the Friday, which we know factually that the File server has not had that much data change within the space of 2 days.

Is it possible that the deduplication on the servers virtual disks is disrupting the replication - or would this not affect it at all?

Thanks,
Sarah
