Manage free Hyper-V, using 2012 Server free Trial, over and over?

0
0

Currently I am exploring whether to continue to use the free vSphere 5.x software that VMWare permits to used at no cost, or if I should switch over to the free Hyper-V 2012 from Microsoft.

vSphere includes a free management client that can be installed on any version of Windows to manage the hypervisor.

(Wow, how does VMWare do it? Apparently Microsoft needs to ask VMWare for help on writing remote server management software?)

,

It appears that the free Hyper-V / Server Core 2012 can ONLY be managed using RSAT on Windows 8 or RSAT on Server 2012.

We have no Windows 8 or Server 2012, and have no intention of using them. We will continue with Windows 7 until end of life, which is still at least 8 years away.

------

So, what options are available to manage the free Hyper-V at no cost, if the 2012 RSAT for it cannot be run on Windows 7?

It looks like the most direct route, is to repeatedly install Server 2012 in trial mode on a spare desktop PC, and every six months, have it leave the domain, format the OS hard drive, reinstall Server 2012, rejoin the domain, and continue remotely managing the free Hyper-V.

Also it may be worth exploring exactly what happens to Server 2012 in trial mode if it is never activated. Nothing on the trial Server 2012 would be used for anything except RSAT, so even if it went into "reduced functionality" and reboots itself every 24 hours.... all the affected services would not matter anyway. All that is needed is RSAT for the remote free Hyper-V server.

,

(Or, maybe Microsoft could make this process a little less obtuse, and um, allow the 2012 RSAT to run on Windows 7? Nah, that's a ludicrous concept.)

iSCSI Dell MD3200 w/ 2 Connections per Dell R710 How many VM's?

Im setting up the following for a client

1 Dell R710

2 Dell 2950's

1 Dell MD3200 w/ 12 7200rpm Disks in RAID 10 and dual iSCSI Modules

1 iSCSI Dedicated Dell 5448 GB 48 Port Network Switch

I plan to cluster all 3 servers and install Hyper-V Clustered on Clustered Storage to a single LUN on the MD3200 (not including Witness LUN)

I would prefer the customer change the models to SAS but that might not be a possibility

I would like to know realistically how many VM's we can run on each server with 2 iSCSI connections to the MD3200 setup in Dynamic Least Queue Depth in MPIO (or suggest a better mode)

Each iSCSI connection will connect to a separate RAID Module on the MD3200

I know you would like to know what the virtual machines will be doing but lets just assume for now they will be a mix of standard servers, Exchange, AD, DNS, DHCP, SQL etc... just picture a nice mixture of about 30 Virtual Machines with varying disk load, nothing too heavy.

I have 4 MD3200 at my full time day job and 2 are used in 2 node SQL clusters, 1 is used for 2 Linux Nodes running Oracle and the 4th is used in a Clustered VMWare configuration. The difference is all of ours are SAS and we use all 15k drives instead of 7.2k like my current client has. Our ESXi Cluster has 3 servers and 30+ Virtual Machines and barely breaks a sweat, once I add the 4th server I plan to load anoter 20+ VM's and see no issues in the foreseeable future. It also helps that all of our SQL traffic is piped out to two SQL clusters with their own MD3200's so nothing running on our cluster has heavy disk usage.

Now my current client on the other hand will be using iSCSI and Gigabit connections which in my experience can only handle a few virtual machines per GB connection, maybe 5 depending on what they will be doing. I think 10 VM's per server running over 2 iSCSI connections will be pushing it and thats an incredible waste for the R710 which I know I can run all 30 of our virtual machines on one of our R710's with 196GB of ram and the current top of line Xeons. I dont recall what is in my clients R710 but memory can be added and as long as it has dual quads it can easily run 20 virtual machines.

Well that's all of it. Let me know what you guys think about the iSCSI connections, any real world similar setups and experiences would be very much appreciated.

Swiching to Hyper-V 3.0 from VMware

I am looking to make the switch.. my questions today are:

1. Is all the HA with Hyper-V still dependent on failover clustering with CSV? I know we now have shared nothing LM but that seems to really only apply to proactive situation and not true HA. I assume this is also true with replicas?

2. What types of storage are you all using? I assume something iSCSI based? Any vendor recommendations? I love how things are looking with SMB 3.0 and SOFS but that still of course requires a solid underlying shared storage.

3. How are people migrating VMs from VMware? Native tools or something 3rd party like VEEAM? We plan to depoly SCVMM, would that assist?

Multi-Monitor and VPN Support

All,

I was trying to move my Virtual Environment from Oracle Virtual Box to Hyper-V.  I have run into a stumbling box that I can't seem to get past.  One of my main uses of Virtual Environment is to use it to remote into my Work PC.  I work from home, so this VM I run quite a bit.  To connect to work I use Cisco AnyConnect.  I do want to use multiple monitors(4) to do my work and my current graphics card does not support grouping monitors into a single one(I'm looking at upgrading sometime).

So, here is my challenge, when I use connect, I'm able to connect to my work VPN.  But I have that  tiny Hyper-V window.

When I use Remote Desktop I can make the screen the size I want.  However, I can't connect to my VPN.  The error message is something about it can't connect from a remote desktop.  I have tried setting up two External Switches so that it has 2 connections two my PC.  However, when Cisco AnyConnect takes over, pinging both IPs become unresponsive.

So, how can I use multiple monitors with Hyper-V and get around this limitation?

For now, I have had to uninstall hyper-v as installing it causes Oracle Virtualbox to not work at all. I am able to get this to work fine with Virtualbox running a Windows 7 environment.

My OS is Windows 8 Professional

Enormous boot time after installing Hyper-V role [resumed]

After I've installed Hyper-V role system boot time rose from about 1 minute to about 10 minutes. I have i7-3930k CPU and Intel DX79TO motherboard with latest BIOS installed. I'm on Windows Server 2012 Standard.

Unfortunately, the KBs suggested here can't help me, as I do not use backup and have only one guest machine, which I start rarely for development purposes. But the problem is not about guests, its about host OS. After computer BIOS finishes its actions and I select Windows Server in boot menu, screen goes blank and HDD indicator is lightened for several minutes. After that Windows logo appears and system finishes to boot in about 20 secs. This several minute blank screen delay disappears when I remove Hyper-V role and reappears when I re-add it.

The same behavior is observed on Windows 8 which is installed on another hard drive. When I install Hyper-V in it, the same several minute blank screen idling appears.

Weird VM move problem - HyperV 2012

Hi,

We’re currently running an evaluation of HyperV 3.0 (we’re a VMWare house currently) and we have two HyperV hosts, one in each of our data centres.

We’ve created a single VM on each host and are currently in the process of testing the VM move process.

On each host we have two Virtual switches. One of the virtual switches is configured for the local VLAN at each datacentre. The other virtual switch is a common “extended” VLAN which exists on both hosts.

With only the two “local” switches in place, we can move the VM from host to host without a problem. However, with the common VLAN switch in place on both hosts, we consistently get the following error:

This appears to not be a networking issue. When both VMs are configured on the “extended” VLAN, we can successfully ping the VMs across the link – but the move simply refuses to work.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to try next?

 Cheers Steve

CSV Volume disk signature changed.

Hello everyone

I encountered this on one of our Hyper-V clusters a few days ago. We had a node failure due to (root cause uncertain, the logs are inconclusive) either network or FC-HBA failure. we lost contact with all machines which resided on the disks that the failing node owned.

the disks were moved to other nodes and machines were brought back online. but oddly enough there appeared "duplicates" of machines across some nodes, this was fixed. and the failing node was taken offline and we did a driver/firmware update and placed the node back into the cluster.

a few days later we noticed that one of the disks were "online, redirected". and we were unable to bring it back to online direct access mode. so migrated it to another node and rebooted the node. Now the volume was online BUT it was not able to find the disk, because the disk signature had changed!? fortunately there were no critical servers on the disk, but were not able to get it back online.

I've come across some "old" KB's and i wonder if its still possible for them to apply(it says win2000 and 2003)? because it explains what I have experienced.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293778

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280425

Any other suggestions of what we can do to bring the disk back online without re-initializing the disk?

thanks for your time.

What is "Capture X:" menu item for

Using Hyped-V console on W7 conneted to Hyper-V on W2008 R2 core.

When I connect to a VM there is a Media menu/DVD Drive/Capture X:

What is it for and where is the documentation about it found. I cannot find a word on this. If I click on it after a while there is a tick in the menu and a new menu item "Uncapture X:" is added.

More than 8 virtual NICs in a VM possible (for virtual TMG)?

Hello,

i'm using a TMG to seperate my Hyper-V LANs, there are firewall rules between the LANs and other funny things (TS Gateway acces from internet to all LANs).

The problem is, that i need more than 8 NICs in my TMG VM. I added 4 legacy adapters, but i don't want use legacy adapters.

It is very important to control the traffic between the LANs, so i need this construction (it's very smart ;-) ).

Is there a trick to expand the number of virtaul NICs ?

My Hyper-V host is Server 2012.

Thanks for any ideas.

Best regards

JPietsch

Windows 8 Ent Hyper-V vhdx not mounting

Dissappearing and changing VHD's on a iSCSI LUN

0
0

Hi there,

I have two HyperV servers on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I have one Netgear 2100 ReadyNAS acting as a shared LUN.

The VMs which are stored on the host operating system work fine and have always worked fine, I intended to move them to the LUN but I am starting to think differently about that.

Last night, one of my virtual machine folders on the LUN completely dissapeared. The VM is still in the hypervisor console, but obv now will not start as it is not there. Secondly, a number of VMs which where off, now will not start. Thirdly(!) one of the VMs that was removed from the Hypervisor console, the VHD was still present so I booted it (after re-adding it). However it is as if it had reverted back to when it was setup (there is a gap in the event log from today, back to the 3rd of this month) so it has none of my configuration. The connection is they are all on the shared LUN. Within the Netgear I have told is which hyperv machines will be connecting to it.

Can anyone shed some light on to why some entire virtual machine folders would dissappear, why some VMs stayed in the console but will now not boot and why some remain but seem to have reverted back in time? I have not been using snap shorts.

Fortuantly all the VMs affected are for testing and not it production. The VMs that are in production have there VHDs on the host and continue to be fine.

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Export, Import

Help MCITP Training

I’ve been trying out Hyper-v in Windows 8 and have managed to import and configure the  machines, but with some difficulty.  Now I want to delete the 250gb stripe and create a 1TB stripe as I’ve bought another 1tb HD drive and I’m waiting for a raid controller to be delivered.

I used the export (to an external HD) command but it wasn’t successful for all the machines and it didn’t maintain the file structure of my differencing and parent  VMs as the differencing  disks were copied to the same folder as the parent. Question. What did I do wrong?

I think I have a way to do this, but this involves uninstalling Hyper-v and restarting, then going into “C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-v” and deleting all the info in the folders; reinstalling Hyper-v (restart), copying the VMs to the new stripe, using the import command and selecting the snapshots to use.  There’s lots I’ve missed out but basically I’ll end up with a 250gb C:drive and a 1TB H:Striped Drive with the same folder structure as before.

Could someone tell me a better way to achieve this?

Thanks,

MSFT_NetFirewallRule - No objects found with the property 'Display Group'

Hi !

I deployed 2 (free) Hyper-V Servers 2012 form my customer. He has AD but no Windows 8 so I have to manage from my own PC (not from domain).

I used guide : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj647785.aspx  (Manage Hyper-V Server 2012 Remotely)

but

Using the command Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup "Remote Administration" gives the error:

"No MSFT_NetFirewallRule objects found with the property 'Display Group' equal to 'Remote Management'

hyper-v configuration issues

Hi,

I have been banging my head with few issues for a while, and I hope to get some help here.

I have 2 hyper-v hosts (windows 2012) in a cluster.

both hosts are connected via iscsi to a storage where all the VMs are.

Each one of the hosts have 2 NICs : 1 for iscsi , 1 for connectivity (management and network to VM) , we don't have a huge requirement to add more NICs as the traffic is not bad.

Here are my issues so far and they might be related:

1- Every week I have one of the 2 nodes fails because it disconnects from the storage for some reason, sometimes it fail back to the second node, and sometimes I have to go and start manually all the VMs.

2- When I start the VMs, it's agonizing how slow is the startup process, (it might take between 15 min to 1 hour for a VM to start). After it starts, and I guess it's because it's slow, the network on the VM takes time to start as well, so any network related service on the VM doesn't start (for example MSSQL doesn't start), so I have to go log in to each VM and start the services that didn't start automatically because the network didn't come up fast enough.

3- I used to have live migration working , but since the last failure, live migration doesn't work anymore, I get an error : Failed to live migrate virtual machine 'machine name' For more data, see 'information Details' , and in information details , I get : The action 'Move' did not complete. Error Code: 0x80070057 , the parameter is incorrect.

4- I also noticed in one host an event ID 1196 showing every 15 minutes,  details are: Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason: The handle is invalid.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

VMs Automatically Migrating Back to 1st Host

I have 2 hosts running Hyper-V with Failover Cluster Manger and SCVMM 2012.  I have migrated half of the VMs to the 2nd host manually while I try to configure/figure out load balancing and failover with SCOM 2012 using PRO.

I've noticed that the VMs that I manually move to the 2nd host keep migrating back to the 1st host and I'm not sure why.  Any suggestions on what could be causing this?  I haven't set up anything explicitly for load balancing but this seems to be working the opposite of how load balancing would work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Virtual Machine Must be in a Stopped State

During my set up of my VDI I have:

*Running Server 2012 on all servers

* created a cluster with a shared volume,
* created a VM and it is syspreped and shut off
* I Installed the Remote Desktop Services with a standard deployment (2 hosts, one server serving as the broker and web access)
* Referencing this (http://blog.itvce.com/?p=1569) and other resources everything works so far except creating a collection.
* The only step I did not follow was to create a virtual switch during the installation of RDS. Normally it is supposed to create a virtual switch named "RDS Virtual". I assume this is the reason I am receiving this error.

Note: I am running hyper-v server core and I chose to not create the virtual switch above because it would knock out my established server IP. Once the RDS Virtual was created I could no longer access my servers remotely and I am not familiar with how to manage the IP configuration for a virtual switch from the core console. If I could create my own RDS virtual I would assume my set up would work. But how does one manually create the RDS Virtual Switch?

UPDATE: I was able to add the virtual swtiches through the installtion process by removing a host server and readding it.  And I was able to keep the network configurations working.  I am still running into the problem.  Still it would be nice to know... Can you create this virutal switch manually? I assume you can since the configs look pretty simple: External network, Allow management operating system to share this adapter, etc...

Anyway, on to the error I receive when I attempt to create a pooled collection:

"Could not identity the state of the virtual desktop. Ensure that the RD Virtualization Host server ABC is available on the network and that the virtual desktop XYZ is shut down"

Again, "ABC" is shut down and I have no problem managing the server.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Server 2012 Hyper-V live migration speed horrible on 10Gbit

0
0

On my freshly installed Server 2012 systems, I have have two 10Gbit nics. When I do a file copy between these two systems, I get up to 400MB/s, which is reasonable considering these are budget systems. These systems are pretty vanilla, no strange things done & nothing installed other than Mallanox drivers& roles/features/patches.

I have configured Hyper-V to use these nics by making sure the live migration goes over their IP subnet. (settings, live migrations, Use these IP addresses...).

When I do a live migration & start the resource manager to check performance, I see that indeed the traffic goes over the Mellanox Infinion 10Gbit nics, but is amazingly slow; it doesn't even get to 500Mbit/s. Theoretically I can throw out the 10Gbit nics, as 1Gbit/s is not even reached!

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas what might be causing this or how to fix it?

thanks.

Hyper-V VM I/O performance issue between SCSI and ATA VHDs

0
0

First, I will go over the configuration:

.

Everything below is running Windows Server 2012

2 Hyper-V machines

1 SAN provisioning with iSCSI

1 Cluster Shared Volume used to store the VMs running on the Hyper-V hosts

.

One of the VMs has 3 virtual drives for this test (all of which are stored on the CSV):

1 fixed-size ATA boot-drive VHD holding the OS

1 fixed-size 20GB ATA VHD (for testing this problem)

1 fixed-size 20GB SCSI VHD (for testing this problem)

I have an identical 10GB file copied to both 20GB drives.

.

If I copy the file from the ATA -> ATA drive, I get ~10-30MB/s transfer rate

If I copy the file from the SCSI -> SCSI drive, I get ~250-300MB/s transfer rate

The same poor performance (10-30MB/s) is noted on the primary boot drive which is also ATA

.

There must be something that I'm missing, because every post/blog/diagram I've read online says that the performance should be the same.  Thanks in advance for any advice.
