Merge In Progress Running

Dear Server Expert,

We have one Physical server running windows server 2008 R2 and inside this Physical Hypervisor there are 3 VMs that running Microsoft Exchange 2010 SP3. Currently, due to the hang to the server, i have to shutted down the server and immediately there are"Merge in Progress" that is running after the server has shutted down. I am not sure why there are this message as i didn't know at all and didn't notice previously that there are Snapshot applied in this server.

Now the issue is, the physical server has lacked of disk space for the merging to finish as i saw that it just left 9 Percent left and it is now only running 28 Percent. The disks are all in dynamics type.

My question is:

1. should i stop the merging? how do i stop the merging? will it stop if i turn on the server again at least to prevent the merging process to start filling the hard disk space?

2. Since they are all dynamic disk, will it work if i plug in one external USB harddisk (1 TB) and convert it to dynamic and then combine the disk space with the server disk space to allow the space for the AVHD to merge?

Please help to advise urgently

Thanks

How To extend the Fixed Size Disk?

Dear Expert,

We have physical server running server Windows Server 2008 R2 and this is the Hypervisor Server for the Exchange Servers. Exchange Servers are being created as separate VMs in this server with DB and Transport roles separated on different VMs. the disk in the DB servers are all created using Fixed Sized VHD. currently, we have the situation whereby the Log partition is going to be full (though full backup are always being performed with Logs Flushed) and until we found what is the issue, we will need to extend the fixed size VHD for the Log Disk since we still have some space in the Physical Server.

May i know what how to edit the Fixed Size Disk VHD? will the exchange server will need to be down for this? will it high risk to edit and expand the size of Fixed Size Disk VHD?

Thanks

H

Shrink the Size of Fixed Size VHD

Dear Server Expert,

We are currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 as the Hyper V server with exchange server running inside this physical server as VMs. All of the exchange server (Transport / DB) are all also running Windows Server 2008 R2. The VHD for the exchange server are all in Fixed Size Disk Format.

Currently, we used different VHD for DB and Log Partition, Each are assigned 600GB. I found that 600GB is a llittle bit too much as we have just used less than 100 GB for 5 Years. may i know is it possible to shrink the size of fixed size VHD into smaller size so i can use the remaining disk size for other purpose? will shrinking is very risky to the VHD?

Thanks

want to have access to local machine

Hi,

I have read an article: https://technet.microsoft.com/windows-server-docs/compute/hyper-v/learn-more/use-local-resources-on-hyper-v-virtual-machine-with-vmconnect#edit-vmconnect-settings

It explains that you can use vm connect to use local resourses on hyper-v. I have windows 10 pro and have hyper-v set up. I have ensured that enhanced mode is on and when creating a VM I always choose Generation 2. In the article it gets to a bit:

Choose the local resource that you want to use

You can choose a local resource like a printer, the clipboard or a local drive that's on the computer that you're using to connect to the VM.

To select a local resource like a drive,

  1. Open VMConnect.

  2. Select the virtual machine that you want to connect to.

  3. Click Show options.

I cannot find this Show options part. I select the vm I want to connect to but cannot see a Show options. I right click and still do not see this option. Where is the Show options part?

How to delegate specific Hyper-V actions only?

Hi,

If I want my colleagues to be able to manage Hyper-V VMs, I need to add them to the "Hyper-V Administrators" group on the server. I just would like to know if there is a way to add more granularity on those rights?

Some examples:

  • Allow people to manage a list of specific VMs, the others VMs will be kept under the "Administrator" (master of the universe) responsibility.
  • Give people the privileges to start/stop/manage checkpoints on VMs, but forbid them to delete VMs, modify betwork switches, etc.

Is there a solution? Thanks.

Windows & Linux VMs IP address loss after restart (include auto-restart and manual restart)

Currently I face a problem on my Hyper-V host that is my Windows and Linux VMs IP address will be loss after I restart the VM. I need to manual enter the IP address again every time it restarted. After I found out some articles, most of the articles are mentioned the integration services are outdated and need to be update. Therefore, I have update my Hyper-V hosts also installed the latest integration services to one of my Windows VM and it works fine. For Linux, I installed the Linux integration services 4.0 but after I restart the VM's IP address is still loss. Any idea or anyone had encounter this issue before?

Thanks and appreciated.

UEFI Boot order options missing from Hyper-V host

I have two 2012R2 Hyper-V Hosts. On one of the hosts, I have no options to set UEFI Boot order, either on existing virtual machines, or on new ones. On the other host, all options are available. I have a series of powershell commands I run to create a Gen 2 VM.  Here is the output from the good Hyper-V host:

Here's the output from the bad host:

I am unable to add any boot entries, or modify:

Set-VMFirmware : The operation is not available.

So, something is wrong with this particular Hyper-V host, but I don't know what to troubleshoot - any ideas?

Unable to start Hyper-V VM - Need to reconnect AVDX to its parent ignoring ID mismatch

Hello,

By mistake I tried to shrink my virtual machine's HD when it had a Snapshot, causing the following error when a try to start the VM:
"An error occurred while attempting to start the selected VM. The operation failed with error code 32791"

According my research it is necessary to reconnect my AVDX to its parent ignoring ID mismatch. I have looked in Hyper-v and haven't found this option.

Could anyone help me to do this?

Emídio

Hi,

I have a Server 2012 R2 plus two windows 10 clients clients. I setup two virtual switches (one external and one internal). I'm planning to use the external on the server machine for internet access and have the server machine act as a router/gateway for the Windows 10 client machine, I'd appreciate any advise help on how to setup this environment the best way?

Thanks.

Server 2016 Hyper-V Virtual Machine Always Turns Off

If I try to restart a virtual machine, hyper-v always turns them off instead of rebooting.  I have to use the hyper-v manager to manually start every instance if a restart was issued within the VM.  It does not seem to matter what OS the VM is, it happens with Linux, server 2016 and 2012 R2 instances.

I notice an error:  'VM-****' could not reinitialize. (Virtual machine ID *******-****-****-****-************)

I thought at first it might be permissions but the hyper-v host is in an OU with blocked inheritance.

What might be causing VM's to fail to reinitialize?

hyper-v fails to enable live migration

I'm trying to enable live migration on my Windows 2012 R2 hyper-v server, and it keeps failing. When I try through the GUI, I get an error that says "Error applying Live Migration changes. Failed to modify service settings."

If I try to enable it via the Enable-VMMigration powershel cmdlet, I get the following result:

Enable-VMMigration : Failed to modify service settings. The operation cannot be performed while the virtual machine is in its current state. At line:1 char:1 + Enable-VMMigration + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.VMTask:VMTask) [Enable-VMMigration], Virt ualizationOperationFailedException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : InvalidState,Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.Commands.EnableVMMigrationCommand

I've removed & reinstalled hyper-v on the server, but with no luck. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this?

HyperV Cluster Replica Broker error - "object could not be found" from Enable-VMReplication Powershell

$

Ok I admit it. This one is driving me crazy ;)

1) I have two Server2016 (Standard) HyperV Clusters - Source01 and DR01. Both part of same forest/domain.

2) Both Source01 and DR01 clusters have a HyperV Replica Broker installed and replication settings configured for Kerberos, Port80 and allow from any server.

3) I can initiate VM Replica successfully in both directions using the FailoverClusterManager UI. It creates the replica, transfers the initial data and everything appears to work.

However....

I need to create the replica using Powershell, but when I try to do it using the Enable-VMReplication powershell command it fails with:

I must be doing something wrong as the UI works. Perhaps some remote permissions not enabled? Remote WMI? something? hopefully some rookie mistake...

1) I've turned the firewall of DR01 off (just in case, just until figure out this issue)

2) The hyperV virtual machine management service is running correctly on both Source01 and DR01

3) the HyperV console on Source01 can correctly connect to DR01 and view/manage the VMs in the console - and vice versa.

Anyone got any ideas? Or seen this behaviour before?

thanks

Joe.

Virtual drive vanishes from 2012R2 guest running on Hyper-V server 2012

Hi,

I have a server 2012 R2 running as a Guest within Hyper-V sitting on top of a server 2012 R2 box. The guest has two VHDXs connected - one hosting the OS, the other user data. From time to time the Guest will lose the data vhdx. It vanishes from explorer, Device manager, Disk Management the works.

Sometimes rebooting the guest will be sufficient to get everything back up and running normally but on other occasions I must remove the VHDX from the guest via its settings in Hyper-V manager, apply, then reattach it. At which point it will come back online again. (I'm not sure why doing this should make any difference but fortunately it has kicked things back into life so far!) I normally run a chkdsk /f on the volume at this point which sometimes finds errors and sometimes not.

This is rapidly becoming an annoying quirk of this server and I would like to solve the problem once and for all. Has anyone got any ideas on where I can even start trying to identify what is happening here - I'm at a loss as to even which of the many log files I should be turning my attention to?

I should mention that the server was originally part of a Hyper-V Replica (Primary) but I had to remove replication in order to remove the data vhdx and reattach it. I have not re-established the replication as a result of the drive randomly deciding to take a holiday every few days. I'm not sure if this could have any bearing on things?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Trevor

Hyper-V VMConnect Authentication Error - 0x607

$

I have recently installed a new Hyper-V server into the 2008 R2 cluster.

The host can Connect to all of the other servers on the other nodes in the cluster. But it cannot connect to its own VMs, nor can any of the other nodes connect to any of the VMs on that new server either.

When attempting to connect (VMConnect.exe) the following error appears - "An authentication error occurred (Code: 0x607)". Screenshot below -

Does anybody have any clue as to whats going wrong here?

ESXi 5.1 as a Hyper-V VM

$

I did  search and came up empty so I thought I'd ask:  Is it possible to install a VM in Hyper-V that is running ESXi 5.1?  I know that you can run an ESX VM under ESX and have both of them operating VMs but I don't know if you can run ESX as a VM under Hyper-V.  I tried to install it but I get to a point where ESX complains that it has no NICs (apparently it doesn't have a driver for the NIC Hyper-V provides) but before I invest a lot of time into this, I wanted to check to see if it is even possible.  Has anyone done this before?

Thanks

Bert
