Live migrate from 1 Hyper-V host to another Hyper-V Host

0

So I need to live migrate a DC and Exchange on a Hyper-V host running Server 2012R2. Now both hosts are in a workgroup and not joined to the domain.  I know I can go into Hyper-V settings and choose Kerberos, but do the Hyper-V Hosts need to be joined to the domain for this to work or it's okay their part of a workgroup?

Thanks,

Hyper-V VMConnect Authentication Error - 0x607

I have recently installed a new Hyper-V server into the 2008 R2 cluster.

The host can Connect to all of the other servers on the other nodes in the cluster. But it cannot connect to its own VMs, nor can any of the other nodes connect to any of the VMs on that new server either.

When attempting to connect (VMConnect.exe) the following error appears - "An authentication error occurred (Code: 0x607)". Screenshot below -

Does anybody have any clue as to whats going wrong here?

Get-WmiObject not returning information for the local machine.

I am trying to get the configuration ID for my VMs using Get-WmiObject command in Windows PowerShell. I am able to do so when I run it against other servers with the following command but it will not work for the local machine.

Get-WmiObject -ComputerName $VM_SERVER -Namespace root\virtualization\v2 -class Msvm_virtualSystemsettingData | select elementname, ConfigurationID

When I run the command against the local server with or without the -ComputerName tag the command returns nothing.

Server 2016 host server rename and local hyper-v manager issues.

If you by chance rename your existing hyper-v server in Server 2016 and you have the full desktop mode installed you might observe the Hyper-v manager not being able to connect to the local hyper-v manager service as well it won't connect to other remote hyper-v servers either. Other hyper-v managers executed remotely on servers not renamed can connect just fine to the server that was renamed. To fix this annoying bug you have to uninstall the hyper-v role and reinstall the hyper-v role on the server that was renamed. In a perfect world my hyper-v servers would be headless, but team members aren't ready for that yet... Please fix as this is in the RTM build.

Windows Guest VM Frozen

Hi,

I am running 6 guest VM on a single host running hyper-v on server 2012r2 datacentre edition. All my guest vms are also running windows server 2012 R2 datacentre edition. Lately I have been experiencing random guest VM freezing. All you can see is the frozen windows server 2012 from the console. I am not able to RDP to the VM and also not able to logon from the console of hyper-V. However I can ping the guest VM fine and file access is also working fine. Now this does not happen to one guest VM but is random and can be any guest VM. I have gone through the log and I didn't find any thing unusual. The only way out is to turn off the VM and start again and then it works fine.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

SUSHH

then I copy all vhd and avhd to usb drive.

I find that I can not change ide controller on hyper-v(as last question above)

Add-VMNetworkAdapter

From what I see to use the "Add-VMNetworkAdapter" cmdlet we need to have the Hyper-V shell installed. My quesiton though is if I for example have 1 physical adapter for use and I want to divide it into multiple adapters (vNICs), for example so that for each adapter I can configure a dedicated VLAN tag and/or configure QOS. For example, vNIC1 will use VLAN 1 and be used for software-based replication with a bandwith allocation of 10%. vNIC2 will use VLAN 2 and be used for client traffic with a bandwidth allocation of 20%, etc.

This purpose will be used for Application X, NOT Hyper-V or a VM. My question is, is there a way to "carve out" multiple vNICs from a single adapter? Is this only supported/allowed for Hyper-V? And if so, for example is I install the Hyper-V Management Tools/Shell and do this, will I have issues? Or, are there other cmdlets to do the same thing, just not via the Hyper-V Cmdlets?

Thanks,

Reuvy

Windows 10 Hyper-V 4kn Support?

Does Hyper-V on Windows 10 support 4k native drives?  I'm about to make a pretty big purchase and I'm wondering if I'll have trouble with 4kn drives rather than getting the 512e ones.  Thanks.

want to have access to local machine

Hi,

I have read an article: https://technet.microsoft.com/windows-server-docs/compute/hyper-v/learn-more/use-local-resources-on-hyper-v-virtual-machine-with-vmconnect#edit-vmconnect-settings

It explains that you can use vm connect to use local resourses on hyper-v. I have windows 10 pro and have hyper-v set up. I have ensured that enhanced mode is on and when creating a VM I always choose Generation 2. In the article it gets to a bit:

Choose the local resource that you want to use

You can choose a local resource like a printer, the clipboard or a local drive that's on the computer that you're using to connect to the VM.

To select a local resource like a drive,

  1. Open VMConnect.

  2. Select the virtual machine that you want to connect to.

  3. Click Show options.

I cannot find this Show options part. I select the vm I want to connect to but cannot see a Show options. I right click and still do not see this option. Where is the Show options part?

Can't import VM exported from another machine

I have 2 servers both running Windows Server 2012 R2. One server is currently running a Hyper-V instance. I have configured the running machine and checked the option under Processor > Compatibility, "Migrate to a physical computer with a different processor version". I shut the VM down, then exported it. After copying it to the new machine I've attempted to import it. I select the folder where I copied the files to and it recognizes the VM. I select "Register the virtual machine in-place". Then it prompts to select where the virtual hard disks are located. I pick the same folder I picked when adding the VM. As soon as I hit next, I get this message:

[Window Title]
Saved State Errors

[Main Instruction]
The following saved state errors were reported:
The processor settings for virtual machine 'PROD1VM - (4/15/2016 - 8:44:17 PM)' are not compatible with physical computer 'BACKUP'. To migrate this virtual machine, you must first shut it down. After shutdown, you can migrate this virtual machine or export it and then import it on the destination physical computer with the correct processor settings. (Virtual machine ID 21424D5E-BB09-4564-83B3-5DDD5C518482)
The operation cannot proceed unless these errors are resolved.  Do you want to delete the save states producing these errors in order to continue?

[Delete Saved State] [Cancel]

The thing is, I HAVE done that. Multiple times. If I click "Delete Saved State", it then prompts me to select where the "C" drive for the VM is, the D drive, then the AVHDX file for the C drive, then finally the AVHDX for the D drive. After selecting those, it fails with this:

[Window Title]
Import Wizard

[Main Instruction]
Hyper-V encountered an error during the import operation.

[Content]
'PROD1VM' could not be realized due to validation errors.

[Expanded Information]
'PROD1VM' could not be realized due to errors in its configuration file which could not be resolved. (Virtual machine ID 2E4F0668-17BC-4F53-82B6-4BBDB2FFD81D)

[^] Hide details  [Close]

I'm not sure what else to try. Each time I retry this export/import cycle it takes the better part of a day to export the stopped VM (which takes a few hours), then another few hours to copy it to the other server/datacenter. If it matters, the total VM size is somewhere around 350GB.

Any ideas on what is causing this to fail?

How to delegate specific Hyper-V actions only?

Hi,

If I want my colleagues to be able to manage Hyper-V VMs, I need to add them to the "Hyper-V Administrators" group on the server. I just would like to know if there is a way to add more granularity on those rights?

Some examples:

  • Allow people to manage a list of specific VMs, the others VMs will be kept under the "Administrator" (master of the universe) responsibility.
  • Give people the privileges to start/stop/manage checkpoints on VMs, but forbid them to delete VMs, modify betwork switches, etc.

Is there a solution? Thanks.

Where do I find the Integration Services Setup Disk?

When I connect to my VM and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu, nothing happens.  Should this be on my my Windows Server 2008 R2 DVD that I used to set yp Hyper-V and my two VMs?

Thanks

Server 2016 VM Hangs shutting down/restarting when the Pagefile is on a different VHDX.

Howdy,

We are working on creating some VMs running 2016 for testing.  Our normal setup for our 2012 R2 machines is a C drive (OS), D Drive (Data), and P Drive (Pagefile).  This has never caused us any issues.  When I set this same thing up on our Server 2016 VMs we run into problems where the VM wont' shut down or restart once we move the Pagefile to P.

To do so I set C & D to No Pagefile and P to System Managed.  The first reboot usually works OK but after that when we try to restart or shutdown we just get to a plain blue background with the words "Shutting down" or "Restarting" and it never moved.  I tried restarting one last Thursday and was off Friday.  I checked it this morning and it still said Restarting...

There is no crash or error or anything and I just have to power it off through the Hyper-V itself.  The VMs always boot back up OK and Event Viewer doesn't show anything except all the various things entered the Stopped State just before the hang.

As soon as I put the Pagefile back on C all the problems fo away and I can shut down and restart all I want with no issues.

Anyone run into this by change or have any ideas what the problem might be?

Windows Server 2016 setup not booting

Hi

Hyper-v running on Windows Server 2008 R2. When the Windows 2016 iso is loaded during boot it crashes with the message in screen one below.

I tried to update integration service by 'Inserting Integration Services Setup Disk' but I get second screen below.

How can I load Windows Server 2012 from iso image in hyper-v on Windows Server 2008 R2?

Thanks

Pagefiles? To use them or not and where to keep them.

Howdy,

I did some research online and found tons of information on different ways to handle the Pagefile when running Windows.  I'm concerned with Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016 and am wondering if there's any official best practices to use for the Hyper-V Guest VMs.  We use Dynamic memory for almost everything and never have anything hit the max or we up the limit.

Please feel free to respond with your setup.

  • Do you leave everything with the Windows Defaults so the Pagefile is on C and Windows manages it?
  • Do you leave it on C but specify a specific size?
  • Do you move the pagefile to it's own VHDX file to keep it separate?
  • If you move it, do you set a specific size or let Windows manage it on the new location?
  • Do you do something else?

We use Network Storage via Netapp or Kaminario and generally have a C and D drive for the OS and general Data.  We also have been creating a P drive to move the Pagefile to but I don't know if there's any benefit to doing so any more.

Thanks for any feedback, opinions, and anything else you have to offer.

Network connection on VM

I have a Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V, and the virtual machine is running Sever 2008 R2, with SQL server 2012, IIS 7.5, and a third party application that is integrated with SQL server 2012.  The third party application is accessed through a browser.

Unfortunately, the the third party application is out of date and cannot be updated.  There is a proposal to take the host server off the network, and connecting it to a switch, and the connecting the computer in the office to the switch, and accessing the third party application on the virtual server that way.

Is this feasible?  I have tested just disabling the network card on the host server, but I could only access the application by connecting to the virtual machine using the Hyper-V manager.  I was only able to connect to the application by using the IP address of the virtual machine in Internet Explorer on the virtual machine, but most of the functionality was not there.

Is there a way to make this work?  Thanks

Simple SET teaming question

Hi folks,

I'm doing a lot of reading about using SET teaming within 2016, and I am trying to play with it and get my head around how it works.

lets say I have 4 x 1GB interfaces, installed in each node of my cluster. To keep it simple lets say I have 2 hosts, and I want to use this lovely new converged networking. My virtual machines generally run over 2 different VLANs (e.g. 100 and 200), and different VLANS for management, live migration and so on.

So to start with - regarding the networking on the VMs:

My understanding is that I would create my team switch first (syntax might be off slightly)

New-vswitch -name "VM_Network" -netapaptername - "NIC1", NIC2", "NIC3", "NIC4" -enableembeddedteaming $true

Get-vm "VM101" | get-vmnetworkadapter | connect-vmnetworkadapter -switchname "VM_Network"

Get-vm "VM201" | get-vmnetworkadapter | connect-vmnetworkadapter -switchname "VM_Network"

Then I need to set the VLAN on the adapter per-vm

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan –VMName "VM101" –Access –VlanId 100

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan –VMName "VM201" –Access –VlanId 200

Am i on the correct lines?

Thanks for any pointers!

Dave
