Interrupted VM stuck

I was doing updates on my 2012R2 Hyper-V VM and power dropped. When I booted my host PC back up the VM would start and say Hyper-V Updating your system (x%) and get stuck at 5%. I can't get past this and I have no snapshots/backups of the VM. Is there anyway to recover this VM?

Hyper-V CSV 20TB IBM v3700 SAN

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with our current setup: Two hosts and a v3700 SAN. Each host has 2x 2-Port Fibre Channel adapters directly connected to the SAN. MPIO is configured with IBM drivers and according to IBM the pathing is good.

The problem I'm encountering is when we launch a checkpoint on either of the hosts the entire network slows to a crawl. I know checkpoints aren't recommended in production but we use Veeam and Veeam uses checkpoints to do it's backups. I have other places with the exact same setup that do not have this issue. The only major difference is the size of the volume (20 Terabytes) for the place with the problem compared to 5 - 6 TB at other places.

I'm taking a shot in the dark and looking for any ideas.

Thanks,

Server 2012 R2 Guest will shutdown when told to reboot

Hyper-V Host is Server 2012 R2

Guest is Server 2012 R2

When rebooting the guest either from the console or Remote Desktop, the guest will shutdown instead of rebooting.

How do I go about diagnosing this issue. I'm looking for useful logs or tools to nut out why a guest would act this way.

Giving permissions for a user to only administrate his VM's and no others

Hi,

We have a user who will need to administer his own VM's on a server 2012 R2 Hyper-V box, but we don't want to give him access to administer VM's that are not his. Is there a way to give him permissions only to his and prevent access to the others?  Thanks.

Mitch

Hi there,

I have a 4 node cluster. When a VM is deployed with the secure boot option enabled it boots fine on 3 of the 4 nodes. One node gives me an event id 12730 with the description :

virtual machine failed secure boot verification because its hash was not found in the signatures database (DB) or its signing certificate did not chain to a certificate in the DB

Any idea's?

Disk Storage performance slower in HyperV 2012R2 VMGuest compared to VMHost - SSD Array

We have brought in a new Pure SSD array and have start testing with it on a Hyper-V 2012R2 Cluster. We have found out that the VM guests will not perform at the top speed the array is capable of compare to the Host that hosts the VM.
The VMHost will test out at about 2.5GBs total running the following Diskspd test
diskspd.exe -c100G -d60 -w40 -t8 -r -b32k -o32 -h -L C:\ClusterStorage\CSV21-Pure-LUN11\temp\testfile.dat

Total IO

thread |      bytes              |     I/Os           |     MB/s     |  I/O per s     |  AvgLat  | LatStdDev |

total:      156191293440 |     4766580 |    2482.58 |   79442.65 |    3.220 |     5.303

Run the same command on the VM and get it will get about 1GBs bandwidth:
G Drive =C:\ClusterStorage\CSV21-Pure-LUN11\VMServer1\GDrive.vhdx
.\diskspd.exe-c100G -d60 -w40 -t8 -r -b32k -o32 -h -L G:\fixed\testfile.dat

Total IO

thread |      bytes           |    I/Os          |    MB/s     |  I/O per s   | AvgLat  | LatStdDev |

Have open a call with Microsoft and the tech seems to have never heard of this issue or the Advanced tuning settings.

Told him about the IOBalancer and he said that officially MS does not recommend turning this off.

This issue must have been notice before but there is little information on how you could give 1 VM more allocation to the Disk then the others.

I have tried the QOS settings but the VM will not go over the 1084MBs no matter what setting I use.

MS has been no help , has anyone run into this issue and found a setting that can give the VM faster Disk IO besides the IOBalance_Enabled setting.

Windows 10 Hyper-V compatibility with NAS storage

Hi,

Is it possible in Win10 Hyper-V to run Hyper-V virtual machines with NAS storage.
Now the VMs are on my local hard disk but if I buy NAS with SMB support and iSCSI target possibility, is it possible?

If I compare for example Qnap NAS devices TVS-463 (Small business) and TS-231+ (home), there is a support in TVS-463 to VMWare, Citrix and Hyper-V but not in TS-231+. That TVS-463 is too expensive for my lab environments so does anyone know what does that support to virtualization technologies mean in NAS manufacturer specifications? One model is also Synology DS716+II which has support for virtualization but that is also too expensive. Every home-intended NAS models does not have support for virtualization at least in their own specifications.

If NAS supports iSCSI target, is it possible to keep my VM vhdx-files in NAS if my host is used as an initiator?
OR if NAS supports SMB 3, can I keep them in that network share on my win10 host. For example \\nas-server\VMS ?

Thank you!

Hyper-V Replica Issues

$

Hi,

So, I'm setting up a DR site for someone using Hyper-V Replica but I'm encountering a number of issues. We're replicating between a 4-node cluster and a 2-node cluster which are on the same domain and subnet. Both clusters have been configured with a Replica Broker using Kerberos on port 80.

We already have around 10 VMs that are currently replicating with no issues so I know our configuration and network settings are OK.

Yesterday, I had to reboot the nodes on the DR Cluster to resolve another issue and now I am unable to establish replication on other VMs.

When trying to enable replication for a VM, on the wizard after providing the FQDN of the Replica Broker, there is a warning that says that Hyper-V is unable to detect the configuration of the Replica server. I tried to proceed with the replication but in the end I just get another error that says the Replica Server is not in a state to receive replication. I also got the error 'A connection with the server could not be established (0x00002efd).

The 10 VMs previously mentioned are still able to replicate normally and issuing the commandTest-VMReplicationConnection does not give any error. The firewalls for all nodes are currently disabled. No other issues with network connectivity as all nodes are able to ping each other.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

HyperV Cluster Replica Broker error - "object could not be found" from Enable-VMReplication Powershell

Ok I admit it. This one is driving me crazy ;)

1) I have two Server2016 (Standard) HyperV Clusters - Source01 and DR01. Both part of same forest/domain.

2) Both Source01 and DR01 clusters have a HyperV Replica Broker installed and replication settings configured for Kerberos, Port80 and allow from any server.

3) I can initiate VM Replica successfully in both directions using the FailoverClusterManager UI. It creates the replica, transfers the initial data and everything appears to work.

However....

I need to create the replica using Powershell, but when I try to do it using the Enable-VMReplication powershell command it fails with:

I must be doing something wrong as the UI works. Perhaps some remote permissions not enabled? Remote WMI? something? hopefully some rookie mistake...

1) I've turned the firewall of DR01 off (just in case, just until figure out this issue)

2) The hyperV virtual machine management service is running correctly on both Source01 and DR01

3) the HyperV console on Source01 can correctly connect to DR01 and view/manage the VMs in the console - and vice versa.

Anyone got any ideas? Or seen this behaviour before?

thanks

Joe.

Network connection on VM

I have a Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V, and the virtual machine is running Sever 2008 R2, with SQL server 2012, IIS 7.5, and a third party application that is integrated with SQL server 2012.  The third party application is accessed through a browser.

Unfortunately, the the third party application is out of date and cannot be updated.  There is a proposal to take the host server off the network, and connecting it to a switch, and the connecting the computer in the office to the switch, and accessing the third party application on the virtual server that way.

Is this feasible?  I have tested just disabling the network card on the host server, but I could only access the application by connecting to the virtual machine using the Hyper-V manager.  I was only able to connect to the application by using the IP address of the virtual machine in Internet Explorer on the virtual machine, but most of the functionality was not there.

Is there a way to make this work?  Thanks

Deploying a VDI role on hyperv hosts (in failover cluster)

Hey,

I'm looking to deploy a VDI environment.

I currently have 3 physical hosts that each run hyperv and are in a failover cluster setup.

My question would be, is it recommended to deploy the VDI role on those 3 hyperv hosts?
Are there any know issues / insights about this?

Server 2012R2 fully updated
Would be running several win10, win7 clients

Thank you!

How To extend the Fixed Size Disk?

$

Dear Expert,

We have physical server running server Windows Server 2008 R2 and this is the Hypervisor Server for the Exchange Servers. Exchange Servers are being created as separate VMs in this server with DB and Transport roles separated on different VMs. the disk in the DB servers are all created using Fixed Sized VHD. currently, we have the situation whereby the Log partition is going to be full (though full backup are always being performed with Logs Flushed) and until we found what is the issue, we will need to extend the fixed size VHD for the Log Disk since we still have some space in the Physical Server.

May i know what how to edit the Fixed Size Disk VHD? will the exchange server will need to be down for this? will it high risk to edit and expand the size of Fixed Size Disk VHD?

Thanks

Shrink the Size of Fixed Size VHD

Dear Server Expert,

We are currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 as the Hyper V server with exchange server running inside this physical server as VMs. All of the exchange server (Transport / DB) are all also running Windows Server 2008 R2. The VHD for the exchange server are all in Fixed Size Disk Format.

Currently, we used different VHD for DB and Log Partition, Each are assigned 600GB. I found that 600GB is a llittle bit too much as we have just used less than 100 GB for 5 Years. may i know is it possible to shrink the size of fixed size VHD into smaller size so i can use the remaining disk size for other purpose? will shrinking is very risky to the VHD?

Thanks

Merge In Progress Running

Dear Server Expert,

We have one Physical server running windows server 2008 R2 and inside this Physical Hypervisor there are 3 VMs that running Microsoft Exchange 2010 SP3. Currently, due to the hang to the server, i have to shutted down the server and immediately there are"Merge in Progress" that is running after the server has shutted down. I am not sure why there are this message as i didn't know at all and didn't notice previously that there are Snapshot applied in this server.

Now the issue is, the physical server has lacked of disk space for the merging to finish as i saw that it just left 9 Percent left and it is now only running 28 Percent. The disks are all in dynamics type.

My question is:

1. should i stop the merging? how do i stop the merging? will it stop if i turn on the server again at least to prevent the merging process to start filling the hard disk space?

2. Since they are all dynamic disk, will it work if i plug in one external USB harddisk (1 TB) and convert it to dynamic and then combine the disk space with the server disk space to allow the space for the AVHD to merge?

Please help to advise urgently

Thanks

Windows Server Standard Virtualization

I have 3 physical servers and am interested in virtualizing using Hyper-V in order to role out multiple technologies. We have Windows Server Standard Edition and want to do (2) VMs per machine but am not sure which virtual servers I should put together.

Here are the technologies I'd like to run:

Domain Controller / DNS/ print & file sharing

Exchange Server

SQL Server

SharePoint Foundation 2013

Office App Server

Remote Desktop Services

Can anyone offer a recommended server configuration and specific things that I should or shouldn't put together, or things I shouldn't virtualize at all?

Thanks
