2016 synthetic NIC speed

0
0

As I’m sure you’re familiar, in 2008 and 2012, when you create a vswitch and share it with the host, a synthetic adapter is created on this host. Regardless of the speed of the physical NIC (1/10gb), the synthetic nic on the host is 10gb. However, in 2016, when creating an external vswitch on a 1gb nic, the synthetic adapter created is shown as 1gb now. I tried this on a W10 laptop with a wireless card and the synthetic adapter now shows 866mbps matching the WLAN speed.

Has 2016/w10 changed the way synthetic adapter speed is presented? And if so, is there documentation for this change?

Can I run a child partition VM that isolated from the host/root partition?

Hi,

Is it possible to run a Hyper-V child partition VM alongside the root partition in an isolated form?

As far as I know,  if you run a child VM it runs inside a vmwp.exe process in the host machine and the host machine can interfere with it by injecting code into that process , am I right?

Thanks,

Tim.

Integration services cannot upgrade HAL

HI,

We migrated a SBS 2k3 to a virtual machine (host is windows 2k8 sp2 with Hyper-v) using disk2vhd.

We checked the update hal checkmark, but now we are running into a problem. The disk2vhd placed a virtual server hal in the VHD. As soon as we try to insert the integration services disk it keeps saying it has to update the hal and needs a reboot.

We say ok, it says it is updateing the Hal, it reboots and then comes again with the same message that it needs to update the hal. So we are in a loop.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

I was able to recreate the problem with a windows xp machine too.

Best regards,

Henry

HyperV 2012/2012R2 : Querying for Differencing VHD Parent disk - Msvm_VirtualHardDiskSettingData has no instances

Hello,

Because lost of disk storage space is sometime lost on CSV volumes by orphan VHDs, in my hyperv 2012 and 2012R2 clusters, I am trying to retrieve for a given Hyper-V Guest, its storage devices and type. For differencing disks, I am trying to retrieve its parent like in SCVMM Hardware properties.

Using WMI queries, I can retrieve guests, storage config including vhd path but not vhd type and its eventual parent.

I found a wmi class under root\virtualization\v2 called Msvm_VirtualHardDiskSettingData that should do the link but querying the class, no instance is listed.

Why WMI ? well, I am writting a suite of documenting tools that query hyperv hosts and gather config without powershell exec. (running on linux and/or windows)

Or any other WMI Class to query to grab VHD namespace, type and parent VHD  ?

Thanks for inputs...

2 domains on 1 piece of tin

Hi all,

I am prepping for an exam. I have a Dell t110 server with hyper-v installed.

The server only has one physical NIC.

I want to create a forest with 2 domains.

I want each domain to reside in its own subnet.

Is this possible with hyper-v virtual switching?

My thought was to create a internal virtual switch and connect the child domain to it. Then user RRAS on the hyper-v host to route between the external virtual switch (bound to the physical NIC in the hyper-v host) and the internal virtual switch created logically within hyper-v switch manager.

This does not seem to work.

Any help on how to set this up would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hyper-V Integration services for chrome OS

Hi,

Does Integration services support offered for the Chrome OS from the Microsoft? If so, can anybody please share the link to download the services package as an ISO and the steps to apply it or any other way?

I have installed the Chrome OS in a VM but the mouse input is not captured. Any help would be appreciated.

Integration services update problems

Have a 2012 R2 Cluster with KB3172614 installed on all hosts. Have installed KB3172614 in all VM's.

Despite that, Hyper-V tells me "update required" for the VM integration services.

- According http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/33796.hyper-v-integration-services-list-of-build-numbers.aspx, Version 6.3.9600.18398 should be installed with KB3172614.

- But "Get-VM | Select-Object name,integrationservicesversion" tells me that Version 6.3.9600.18080 is installed.

- When I connect to the VM in Hyper-V Manager, then "insert integration service disk" and then upgrade the integration services, the correct version 6.3.9600.18398 is installed after the several required reboots.

Why are the integration services not updated with the installation of KB3172614 in the VMs? We have about 100 VM's, and it is so much work to keep them updated, and to separately update the integration services on all VM's manaully in another maintenance window.

Thank you in advance for any help.

HyperV replication doesn't work from 2016 to 2012

Hello,

I have installed and configured 2 new machines with Windows 2016 and configured cluster HyperV on them. I have couple of machines working on them already.

I have another HyperV Host on Windows 2012 R2. I have 12 machines on this hyperV and from this 2012r2 machine I replicated a test VM to Windows 2016 Cluster VM successfully.

After replication finished, I failed over the machine without a problem then tried to do a reverse replication but it didn't work as I keep getting this error:

"Hyper-V cannot connect to the specified replica server . error the operation timed out verify that the specified server is enabled as a replica server."

I tried to delete the VM on the 2012R2 Host and replicate it from HyperV cluster 2016 to 2012 but I get the same error.

I have tried to do some troubleshooting and noticed that the Hyper-V is listening on replication port that I configured 443 but with the localhost IP 127.0.0.1 not its own IP so I can telnet localhost from the same host but I can't telnet the host from the other HyperV Hosts.

I am curious .. Is this a bug or is the replication process supported only from 2012 to 2016 not the opposite?

Thanks

Hyper-V Virtual Switch Max Speed?

We have two NICs connected at 10GB. When we team the NICS to create an external virtual switch, shouldn't the virtual switch have a speed of 20GB? It is only showing as 10GB. Is 10GB the max of a hyper-v virtual switch?

Thanks,

Hyper-V HA options

Hi,

I know Hyper-V cluster with CSV can be built on iSCSI or FC storage.
My question is, is it possible to do the same on DAS? Like have 2 nodes with shared DAS (SAS) staorage (we are considering Dell SC series)?

If its not possible with CSV, is there another option to build Hyper-V HA cluster on MS only technologies, ie. without any additional SW?

Thank you.

P.S. My idea is to expose same DAS (SAS) volume to both nodes and create cluster on top of this.

Is Server 2016 Guest Supported on Hyper-V 2012 R2?

0

Hi,

I am looking at deploying SCVMM 2016 for a customer and the VMM Management server has to run on Windows Server 2016.

The VMM server will be deployed as a virtual machine on a 2012R2 Hyper-V host but I can't see anywhere if this is definitely supported.

Supported guest Operating Systems on the Hyper-V 2012R2 page shows 2016 Technical Preview but not the released version - I'm guessing they have not updated the page since 2016's GA release but does anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

NIC Team

Hello,

I'm configuring a Hyperv with NIC Team with 4 network ports.

There is no network segmentation on the network.

Do I need to do some configuration on the switch ports for the four ports to work on the Nic team?

The traffic is swinging between the virtual machines in the nic team, who will use these four ports?

Thank you.

Create Homelab deparate from Main Network and give Access Point

Hello everbody. I am trying to create a homelab .

This homelab consists in a desktop that has 2 ethernet gigabit cards, and one wifi card.

This homelab has installed windows server 2012 R2 with HyperV role.

Whithin hyperV i have installed:

DC (windows server 2012 R2 with DNS-DHCP and Domain Controller)

IPCOP (virtual router that connects with my ISP Router)

IPCOP separate the main network (192.168.0.1/24) from the laboratory network (192.168.1.1/24)

DC acts as DHCP in the laboratory network

The thing is, that i want to use the wifi card (of my homelab) as an access point to connect from an external computer (like my laptop) trough this access point (and also be routed to internet).

For now, the only "access point" i have, is the one that the ISP provides me. But this access point, gives access to the "main network", and i want to create another access point to access from outside to the "laboratory network" (192.168.1.1/24).

First, of all, sorry about my english, i tried to be as simple as i can to explain it.

I will really apreciatte any help to create an access point in laboratory network .

I'll post a graphic to be more comprehensive.

Hi,

Anyone successful in using LLDP on a microsoft Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter edition ? When I enable it via

Ethernet card -> Properties -> Client for Microsoft Networks --> Install -> Protocol --> LLDP , I hit the error

"Could not add the requested feature. The error is : the system cannot find the file specified. ".

My system32 does not seem to have the MSLLDP.sys.

Tried to use the install iso and still not able to find it. Any place I can download it from ?

Installing Hyper-V and I have some questions about storage performance tweaking

I'm installing a lab environment and I was thinking about the optimal settings for performance. I have HP Proliant ML350p G8 with eight  450GB 10k SAS disks attached to P420i controller, 64GB RAM and two multicore xeon CPUs.

I was thinking that I just create a single RAID1+0 logical drive that uses all eight disks with strip size of 64KiB. OS and the VM's will share this but I separate them with partitioning.
