VSS snapshot creation time while backuping with Veeam Backup & Replication 9.0

Hi,

I have the following issue from about September or longer...

In the infrastructure I have one standalone Hyper-V host with couple of VMs hosted via ISCSI and Veeam B&R 9.0 to perform backups of such VMs. At September I noticed that when Veeam create backup for VMs in the Backup Job the process of creating VSS snapshot (with crash consistent mode - the most basic mode for backup) takes much of time. Firstly it was 1:44min, I  didn't changed anything and let veeam perform the backups normaly. After a couple of days I noticed that this VSS snapshot creation process takes 2:41min, again after a couple of days it was 5 minutes, only for creating the VSS snapshot. Normaly I remember that creating VSS Snapshot took not more than 40 or 50 seconds. I started to debug this problem, because the 80% of backup time is only for creating (now it is 5 minutes) and closing (the same value about 5 minutes) snapshot... I checked that VSS snapshot is created after Veeam starts to create it with vssadmin list shadows command. I can see the VSS snapshot when it is created. Additionally I checked that the storage for VSS snapshot is sufficient with vssadmin list shadowstorage command - there are no any problems - much of space available, no any old snapshot only this one created by Veeam.

What is more interesting after a few weeks I noticed the same issue on my second infrastrcture where I have one Hyper-V host and Veeam too.

For now I know only one operation which reduces the VSS time to 40 seconds. It is of course reboot the host... But now I have to reboot the hosts every weekend which is not a good idea for me.

I asked Veeam support for such issue, but they don't find any problem and said me that Veeam do nothign that using the native mechanisms of VSS (in a easy words - Veeam only execute the vss commands to create the snapshots. They don't find any interesting in logs...).

What I can add is that I tested a lot things for example:

- Try to create new Backup Job with test VM - the same result

- Place VM on the local storage of Hyper-V Host (not iscsi storage) - the same result (VSS 5 min)

- Try different distributions of VMs both windows and Linux - the same result...

Do anyone have similiar issue or have idea how to troubleshoot the issue?

Thanks.

Matt.

Replica won't resync after reverting to previous snapshot

I have multiple VM's replicating to an off-site server.  I had to revert one back to a snap shot.  The status is now showing needs to be re-synchronized.  I have tried resume replication and tried manual re-synchronization.  Neither of these work.  Can anyone suggest how to restore the replication?

Thanks.

Can't start VMs - error while initializing

Hello,

I'm running a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard as Hyper-V host.

It has the following VMs.

1) A Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard. This is a legacy system that has been migrated and will be shut down eventually. (It is currently running.)

2) A Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. This has been configured as domain controller with a different domain than 1) but will eventually replace 1). It was installed today and rebooted several times in order to install updates.

3) Another VM that has not received any OS yet. I created it after I was done with 2).

When trying to start the VM #3 I got an error. After rebooting #2 for another round of updates, the same error occurs. I can no longer start any VMs.

The error says:

-----

Application error while trying to change the state of "VM1".

"VM1": Error while initializing.

The computer remote system could not be initialized. Error: "Element not found." (0x80070490).

No useable certificate found. Error: "Element not found." (0x80070490).

-----

I found pages describing similar errors but with different error codes (2912, 2008) and they all seemed to refer to a Server 2008 as host. Like this here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971264

Again, this is a 2012 R2. I seem to be unable to reproduce the steps, as I use Hyper-V, not SCVMM.

Also, while I can remove VM#2 and VM#3 (I completely deleted VM#3, including all files and created a new one, problem persists), I cannot remove VM#1 as it is productive.

It is really confusing as the problem just suddenly appeared in the afternoon. Before that everything worked well. I did not change anything on the host.

Anti Affinity vs Preferred Owner vs ???

Howdy,

We have a bunch of VMs running on a 6 node Hyper-V Cluster.  Most of our VMs are in pairs (or sometimes as many as 4 in a group) so we have DC01 & DC02, App01 & App02, etc.  We don't want the 01 and 02 of a group ever to be on the same host for obvious reasons so we're researching ways to accomplish this.

Our first attempt was to simply set all the Odd numbered VMs to "Prefer" the odd numbered Nodes and the same with the evens.  However, because Preferred Owners goes in order we ended up with everything trying to get on Node 01 and 02 which isn't what we wanted so we need to try again.

As of right now we have 2 ideas we're toying with.

1) Do the same thing we already tried but rotate the order of the preferred owners.  The first odd VM would prefer 1, 3, & 5.  The second odd VM would prefer 3, 5, & 1.  The third would prefer 5, 1, & 3.  and so on.  The benefits of this is that things would be more evenly spread out among all the hosts and  they would be organized so we always knew odd VMs were on odd Hosts

2) Setup Anti-Affinity groups for all our server pairs and not use preferred owners.  This seems like much more work to setup as I still haven't found a great tutorial yet (feel free to point me to one if you have one).  But in the end it would give us more flexibility since any VM could end up on any Node as long as it's partner wasn't already on that node.  The downside other than the initial setup would be that VMs wouldn't be organized at all (not that that really matters) and when adding a new VM we have to redo the group for that batch or setup new AA groups.

Since we have plenty of spare space on our cluster we're not too concerned with either option not working but I'm just looking for opinions on which way to proceed.

Also, are there any new technologies coming out in the 2016 versions (or current branch stuff) of any products that would make this easier?  We don't use VMM right now and our hosts are all 2012R2 but if VMM2016 (or whatever it's called) has new features to make this better, we'd definitely consider that too.

Thanks!

Hyper-V Server 2016 Replication Issues, stuck on Creating a reference point

Hi all,

Config: 2 Node Cluster, with Windows SMB 3 Storage for VM's

I took the plunge, and migrated from Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 to 2016, and have had some fun and games on the way...  I've now got one major issue, and was hoping someone would shed some light on the issue:

Enable replication for a VM, whilst it is powered off.  Replication completes successfully.  When I power up the VM, changes are detected and replication kicks off to copy the changes to the replica.  At the same time there is a new "Creating a reference point" part which starts off, and this is where the issue is.... it is getting stuck there at around 50%.  I can't shut the VM down, power off doesn't work, can't kill the process, or shut the Host down, apart from a Physical power off.

Host Event Log Entry that ties in with the issue is:
'VMTEST01' timed out while waiting to perform the 'Cleaning up stale reference point(s)' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Creating a reference point'

I have tried a few different VM's, cleanly built, and they have the same issue.

The exact same setup on 2012 R2 worked perfectly.

Any ideas?

"we couldn't complete the features undoing changes" on activating Hyper-V

I've been looking for this error all over the internet, and I can't find any solution.

So I have a Asus N750JK with Windows 8.1 64 bits Pro installed.

I have SLAT feature (I downloaded a small application to check and it says I have it all) , I also have activated Intel Virtualization in the BIOS. When I go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Enable or disable Windows Features, I go to Hyper V and check"Hyper V Platform" , it applies the updates, asks to restart computer, and it does, then it goes normally, starts to update, restarts the windows and it goes up to 100% and in the end it says: "We couldn't complete the features undoing changes" and restarts my windows once again and says: "we couldn't complete the updates undoing changes"

I have tried:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

but nothing changed.

What do I have to do to fix this?

Thanks.

Win Server Backup, Exchange 2016 in Server 2016 VM in Server 2016 host using the host

AFAIK until now, not using commercial solutions, only Windows Server Backup, to backup an virtualized Exchange AND purge the logs, you needed to backup VM "internally" and then maybe backup the backup (or the VM) from the host.

Do Production Checkpoints change this?

I mean with Production Checkpoints (or ANY other method supported internally by Server 2016, Exchange 2016, Hyper-V and WSB), is it possible to directly backup the Exchange 2016 VM using the host and still the logs to be purged?

Sound for VM under Hyper-V. USB over TCP/IP??

Hi.
I have a rather difficult issue.
I am running Hyper V on a Windows 2008 R2 server and migrating several old dedicated XP machine to them.

One of these machine is our 'music on hold' for our telephone system. It gets updated remotely over the net with additional sound snippets so it cannot be run as just a tape.

Now -the audio output is plugged in to out phone exchange and all works well. However...

Now that it is a virtual we no longer have any sound capabilities. I had hoped using a small USB sound device would work but sadly No. The sound device is not seen by the windows host.

I am now wondering if.. there was some way that I could use one of the units that connect USB devices over the network and try that.

Can anyone give me an idea..  I don;t want to use RDP as that will mean just having a computer doing nothing but play music.. which is what we had originally.

Many thanks for any advice

Dave

Server 2016 bluescreen vmswitch.sys

Hi all,

I am facing a serious issue on two Hyper-V-hosts with Windows Server 2016 Datacenter.

Without external influence they crash and all guest VMs too. The STOP code is UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP 0x0000007f and it is caused by vmswitch.sys

A simple reboot does not fix this, it always crashes 8 to 10 times in a row until it works properly again.

This problem occurs on two of our servers with completely different hardware.

I tried several versions of the nic driver, but it did not resolve the issue. VMQ is already disabled on the nics and in the VM settings.

Here you can download a recent minidump file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76615769/110416-20546-01.dmp

Do you have any ideas what may cause this problem?

Thank you,
Felix

Virtual drive vanishes from 2012R2 guest running on Hyper-V server 2012

Hi,

I have a server 2012 R2 running as a Guest within Hyper-V sitting on top of a server 2012 R2 box. The guest has two VHDXs connected - one hosting the OS, the other user data. From time to time the Guest will lose the data vhdx. It vanishes from explorer, Device manager, Disk Management the works.

Sometimes rebooting the guest will be sufficient to get everything back up and running normally but on other occasions I must remove the VHDX from the guest via its settings in Hyper-V manager, apply, then reattach it. At which point it will come back online again. (I'm not sure why doing this should make any difference but fortunately it has kicked things back into life so far!) I normally run a chkdsk /f on the volume at this point which sometimes finds errors and sometimes not.

This is rapidly becoming an annoying quirk of this server and I would like to solve the problem once and for all. Has anyone got any ideas on where I can even start trying to identify what is happening here - I'm at a loss as to even which of the many log files I should be turning my attention to?

I should mention that the server was originally part of a Hyper-V Replica (Primary) but I had to remove replication in order to remove the data vhdx and reattach it. I have not re-established the replication as a result of the drive randomly deciding to take a holiday every few days. I'm not sure if this could have any bearing on things?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Trevor

Issue increasing memory on Guest VM on Hyper-V 2012 R2 The error code was '0x70' ('There is not enough space on the disk.').

Hello,

I'm having an issue increasing the memory on a guest sql VM. I am running Hyper-V 2012 R2 and trying to increase the guest from 12 gigs to 32 gigs or 64 gigs?

The Hyper-V server has 256 memory and has 60 gigs of hard-drive space available (total of 120).

The guest-VM has 12 gigs of ram installed and 20 gigs of hard-drive space available (ISCSI-EMC storage attached-clustering shared  volume for OS total of 50 gigs but only using 30 gigs).  Why would it complain about the disk space? Is it complaining about disk space on the Guest or Hyper-V hypvisor?

Error below:

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine SQL-PROD1' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'SQL-PROD1' failed. The error code was '0x70' ('There is not enough space on the disk.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

Hyper V Replication between two AD forests

I am trying to replicate VMs in a cluster to another site. The main site has a Hyper-V cluster and the second site is a standalone server. I created a conditional forwarder in both of the DNS servers and created two way domain trust. I am able to browse for objects from that remote site, I can ping the servers both ways.  However when I go to enable replication for the virtual machine, at the Specify Connection Parameters Screen. I got an error at the bottom of the screen

"Could not get configuration details of the specified server. "

can't kill vmwp.exe

I have read numerous posts about how to find a hung VM and shut it down, but every article says to kill vmwp.exe and I have been unable to kill this process as an administrator.  Any thoughts?

Live migrate from 1 Hyper-V host to another Hyper-V Host

So I need to live migrate a DC and Exchange on a Hyper-V host running Server 2012R2. Now both hosts are in a workgroup and not joined to the domain.  I know I can go into Hyper-V settings and choose Kerberos, but do the Hyper-V Hosts need to be joined to the domain for this to work or it's okay their part of a workgroup?

Thanks,

Our IT guy passed away suddenly and now we have to physically move our hyper-v server to another location, is it a simple shutdown, move and then power back on?

0

I am a noobie appointed to handle the move. It is a simple rack mount server that serves a VM with cloud access. Will the move be as simple as I think it is or is there IP reconfiguration and other things involved after powering on and connecting to the internet?

Thank you

Windows 10 Enterprise Licensing Hyper-V

Hi Guys!

Hopefully I've posted in the right area,

I have a surface book running windows 10 Enterprise  with SA
if I want to run a VM with Windows 10 do I then need to buy an additional copy of windows 10 or can I legally use the same license?

Thanks

If I have a VM OS that is stored <g class="gr_ gr_179 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="179" id="179">on</g> the default location on a c drive and on the VM the Virtual C drive is almost full, can I just move it to a bigger drive and have that fix my space issue or will that not affect it?

Server 2008 R2 VMs to 2016

0

We are in the process of building out and replacing our 2008 R2 servers and utilizing HyperV replication and Storage Replication on the Server 2016 platform. The question I neglected to figure out at the time is the import/export, migration path from getting the 2008R2 HyperV VM's from those servers onto the Server 2016 HyperV platform. Google failed to yield much results on any path from HyperV 2008R2 to 2016. Anybody have a compatibility matrix or the path we need to take from 2008R2 to 2016 in regards to HyperV VM's?
