windows XP VM using Hyper-V will install third party applications but won't run them

The VM in question is being ran on Windows Server 2012 R2 and already has an operating system installed Windows XP (32 Bit) and the problem I'm having is with a really old game that will install on the VM but when I try to run it, it says (Cannot Locate The CD-ROM). I've ran the program on another physical system days before this and it ran just fine the game is unreal tournament (yes the first one) and the disk says that it is designed for Windows 95 on the front, and that is the operating system that the physical system that I tested it with was running. I have a disk for Windows 98 but I'm having a little trouble with getting it to install on another VM so that is kind of my last resort.

Guest crashed during backup using Symantec Backup Exec, won't show login screen but will boot up.

Hi,

I have a server 2008 box that crashed while it was being backed up and somehow the snapshot chain got broken. I manually merged all the VHD files back into a single VHD and now the server will boot, but it will not show the login screen. I know that it is booted because I can hit the shift key 5 times to bring up the sticky keys option. Can someone please help, I have tried many things including: Safe mode, last known good, running the bootsect /nt60 all /force command, all to no avail and the server just keeps showing the black screen. Restoring from backup is the absolute last option as the last good backup was now a few days ago.

Thanks in advance!

Live migrate from 1 Hyper-V host to another Hyper-V Host

So I need to live migrate a DC and Exchange on a Hyper-V host running Server 2012R2. Now both hosts are in a workgroup and not joined to the domain.  I know I can go into Hyper-V settings and choose Kerberos, but do the Hyper-V Hosts need to be joined to the domain for this to work or it's okay their part of a workgroup?

Thanks,

Hello, can anyone tell me how can I backup virtual machines while running in Hyper-V core. I have two hyper-v core 2012 r2 servers and running about 22 virtual machines in production. Can anyone give me a method to backup virtual machines? Currently I'm using Disk2VHD tool monthly.

Thank you

Hey all,

I have a Windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter box with 7VM's on, two of the vm's report an error on windows backup saying its failed

I do not wish for snapshots to be backed up but the drives are backed up daily.

The vm drives that are shown on here do work via restore but flag up saying cant be used

After upgrading the two 2012 R2 servers to DC edtion they are getting errors, heres the logs

Hyper-V CSV 20TB IBM v3700 SAN

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with our current setup: Two hosts and a v3700 SAN. Each host has 2x 2-Port Fibre Channel adapters directly connected to the SAN. MPIO is configured with IBM drivers and according to IBM the pathing is good.

The problem I'm encountering is when we launch a checkpoint on either of the hosts the entire network slows to a crawl. I know checkpoints aren't recommended in production but we use Veeam and Veeam uses checkpoints to do it's backups. I have other places with the exact same setup that do not have this issue. The only major difference is the size of the volume (20 Terabytes) for the place with the problem compared to 5 - 6 TB at other places.

I'm taking a shot in the dark and looking for any ideas.

Thanks,

Pass-through disks are disappearing after configuring MPIO on Windows VM along with Virtual Fiber Channel

I have a Windows 2016 Server (Base System) with Hyper-V enabled with a Windows 2016 VM (Win-VM).

Disks are presented from various Target Arrays to Base System and MPIO is configured. Each disks having four physical paths. Few disks are attached as pass-through disks to Win-VM.  And these disks are visible in the Win-VM.

Now I have created two Virtual Fiber Channel (Two Physical port in each VFC) and presented disks from same Target arrays. ThenI have configured MPIO in guest VMs (Win-VM) also.

Here starts my problem.

After configuring MPIO in guest VM that is in my case Win-VM, few pass-through disks are disappearing fromWin-VM.

I have two questions.

  1.       Whether the above scenario is a valid configuration? (Can we use Pass-through disks and VFC disks in same system)
  2.       If it is a valid configuration, why pass-through disks are disappearing?

Hi!

Is it possible to upgrade Hyper-V Version: 6.2.9200.16384 to 6.3.9600.16384 without upgrading Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2?

Thanks.

Correct NTP settings for Hyper-V with PDC as guest

$

Hi!

I'm setting up a new domain including new servers. Currently all of them are running on one Hyper-V server.

The PDC is running on the Hyper-V host, which currently isn't in the domain. A couple of other 2016 servers are in the domain, where ntp-settings are automatically changed when joining the domain.

Although when running the following command on any guest (domain joined)

w32tm.exe /query /source

the result is

VM IC Time Synchronization Provider

Is this recommended? I'm also thinking about what will happen when I join the Hyper-V host to the domain, which is running in a VM on the host... NTP loop?

There are a lot of articles on this, I know, but some tell you to disable time sync in integration services, while some explicitly tells you to NOT EVER disable it due to drifting.

What do I do here? This is what makes somewhat sense to me:

  • Sync Hyper-V host to external NTP
  • Sync all VMs through Hyper-V host, including PDC to keep from drifting
  • Sync all physical computers to PDC

I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

Server 2016 physical and VM machine not communicating with each other

Hi

I installed Win server 2016 and add role of Hyper-V and installed 2 VMs. As per requirement i configure 2 external v switch and add both 2 switch on both servers, Now both VM have 2 Ethernet connection. I give the VM static IP, gateway and DNS as per the actual loop in physical machine. But when i try to ping vm to physical machine it shows "destination host unreachable" and when i try to ping form physical to virtual it shows "request timed out".

I cross check both machines firewall are off and IP is same as per physical machine and the network  but still same issue. I enable Vlan identification and gave the same number but still same issue.

again i change my external switch to internal but issue did not resolve.

currently my virtual switch is on external as per below pic.

Screenshot that shows the external network options

Kindly suggest any solution for this.

Thanks

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

Hi,

I have the problem that when I start a VM with windows server 2012 on a hyper-v v2 host, it takes very long till the VM get bind the static or dynamic ip adress. I tried both, static and dynamic. In every case I see at the event viewer the following error:

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

After a few minutes the VM gets bind the IP an everything works fine. But at the next time I reboot the machine the same failure appear.

Trying to use legacy network adapter results in the same problem. After this I tried to export the vm to a hyper-v v3 host. At first boot time
the problem didn't appear and the vm get's bind the ip adress without problems. Then after upgrading the integration services to hyper-v v3
version the same problem appears but without register it in the event viewer.

Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?

Kind Regards,
Marcus

VSS snapshot creation time while backuping with Veeam Backup & Replication 9.0

Hi,

I have the following issue from about September or longer...

In the infrastructure I have one standalone Hyper-V host with couple of VMs hosted via ISCSI and Veeam B&R 9.0 to perform backups of such VMs. At September I noticed that when Veeam create backup for VMs in the Backup Job the process of creating VSS snapshot (with crash consistent mode - the most basic mode for backup) takes much of time. Firstly it was 1:44min, I  didn't changed anything and let veeam perform the backups normaly. After a couple of days I noticed that this VSS snapshot creation process takes 2:41min, again after a couple of days it was 5 minutes, only for creating the VSS snapshot. Normaly I remember that creating VSS Snapshot took not more than 40 or 50 seconds. I started to debug this problem, because the 80% of backup time is only for creating (now it is 5 minutes) and closing (the same value about 5 minutes) snapshot... I checked that VSS snapshot is created after Veeam starts to create it with vssadmin list shadows command. I can see the VSS snapshot when it is created. Additionally I checked that the storage for VSS snapshot is sufficient with vssadmin list shadowstorage command - there are no any problems - much of space available, no any old snapshot only this one created by Veeam.

What is more interesting after a few weeks I noticed the same issue on my second infrastrcture where I have one Hyper-V host and Veeam too.

For now I know only one operation which reduces the VSS time to 40 seconds. It is of course reboot the host... But now I have to reboot the hosts every weekend which is not a good idea for me.

I asked Veeam support for such issue, but they don't find any problem and said me that Veeam do nothign that using the native mechanisms of VSS (in a easy words - Veeam only execute the vss commands to create the snapshots. They don't find any interesting in logs...).

What I can add is that I tested a lot things for example:

- Try to create new Backup Job with test VM - the same result

- Place VM on the local storage of Hyper-V Host (not iscsi storage) - the same result (VSS 5 min)

- Try different distributions of VMs both windows and Linux - the same result...

Do anyone have similiar issue or have idea how to troubleshoot the issue?

Thanks.

Matt.

Windows 10 host black screen after boot when hyper-v is enabled

I am using Docker for Windows and everything worked fine.

Today suddenly my machine didn't boot anymore.
After a lot of fiddling around it seems to be the Hyper-V Hypervisor whats causing this.
Windows boots up but after the bios the screen turns black (but you still hear sounds etc. when connecting e.g. a usb drive).

Any idea whats causing this?

EDIT:
After downgrading my Intel HD 4600 driver it works again.

---> HYPER-V is INCOMPATIBLE with the new intel driver 20.19.15.4531 (win10, thinkpad w541).

(Also why the heck is windows updating my graphics driver?)

Upgrading From Server 2008 R2 to Server 2016

$

Hi All

I have a planned upgrade of a system that is currently running Server 2008 R2 Ent, with four Virtual Servers on hyper-v all running Server 2008 R2, one Domain controller, one exchange server (Exchange 2010), one Sql server with an accounting Package and one sql server with a Autodesk package.

The phase one of the upgrade is to replace the current Server 2008 R2 operating system with Server 2016, its easy enough as the VHDs themselves do not reside on the system partition of the RAIDed data set. and then to get the Hyper-v's running as is, on the server 2016 OS.

The second phase is upgrading the Virtual operating systems to server 2016.

My question is, will this process be simple enough? ie. Reinstall with server 2016 and simply import the virtual machines into the server 2016 hyper-v manager? or is this even possible or not? or are there resources somewhere I can look at. I have googled and come up with nothing relevant.

What are the steps to upgrade a host operating system from Server 2008R2 to Server 2016 and still have the server 2008 R2 virtual machines still boot up on the server 2016?

thank you for your help in advance.

Problem Remotely Connecting to VM via Remote Desktop Connection

I have a Windows 7 VM running in Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 R2. Because of the hands on work needed with the HOST i have it set up to access remotely via Remote Desktop Connection. I need to also connect to the VM via RDC at any given moment for testing purposes. However, while i can connect to the HOST via RDC with the correct authenticated login i cannot get RDC to connect to my VM. The server does run Active Domain while my VM is on its own WORKGROUP. The VM is networked to the External NIC of the HOST and has a static IP address that is visible from the router admin page.

I have read and done the Set up Internal Network Interface in Hyper-V, shared the connection from HOST NIC to the Virtual Switch internal interface. Also changed the PORT used for RDC in the VM to 3391 in RegEdit and allowed the port through VM firewall, as well as HOST firewall and fort forwarded the port from router. Also setting the Virtual Server Port to VM IP in router as well.

I try to log into the VM through RDC with 192.168.X.X:3391 w/ username. But no connection is made. Can someone tell me where i am going wrong with this?

Cluster Validation issue

We have two node failover cluster. We could see that all the VM's are got moved to single node and got rebooted multiple times.  Events are

1.       Isatap interface isatap.{} is no longer active – 4201 - Iphlpsvc
2.       Cluster node '09' was removed from the active failover cluster membership. The Cluster service on this node may have stopped. This could also be due to the node having lost communication with other active nodes in the failover cluster. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapters on this node. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges – 1135 - FailoverClustering
3.       Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Cluster Disk 2') has entered a paused state because of '(c000020c)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished. – 5120 - FailoverClustering
4.       Cluster resource 'Cluster Disk 1' of type 'Physical Disk' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed. Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet – 1069 – FailoverClustering
5.       Isatap interface isatap.{} with address fd80::5ede:169.254.2.135 has been brought up – 4200 - Iphlpsvc
7.       The Cluster service failed to bring clustered role 'Cluster Group' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered role. – 1205 – FailoverClustering
8.       Clustered role 'Cluster Group' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period. – 1254 – FailoverClustering
9. After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period – 1177 – FailoverClustering
10.    Isatap interface isatap.{} is no longer active – 4201 – Iphlpsvc
11.    The Cluster Service service entered the stopped state. – 7036 – Service Control Manager
12.    The Cluster Service service terminated with the following service-specific error: A quorum of cluster nodes was not present to form a cluster – 7024 – Service Control Manager
13.    The Cluster Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service. – 7031 - Service Control Manager
14.    The Cluster Service service entered the running state. – 7036 - Service Control Manager
15.    Isatap interface isatap.{} with address fd80::5ede:169.254.2.81 has been brought up. – 4200 - Iphlpsvc

when I run the Validate Configuration, the "Validate Disk Failover" test fails.  The message in the report is "Node Server01.Mydomain.com holds the SCSI PR on Test Disk 0 and brought the disk online, but failed in its attempt to write file data to partition table entry 1. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation."

Any suggestions?
