Hyper-V Virtual Switch Max Speed?

0
0

We have two NICs connected at 10GB. When we team the NICS to create an external virtual switch, shouldn't the virtual switch have a speed of 20GB? It is only showing as 10GB. Is 10GB the max of a hyper-v virtual switch?

Thanks,

Hyper-V Replication - Initial Replication and HRL understanding

0
0

Hi all,

I am totally new to hyper-V replication so the questions below might sound silly (while i am trying to understand a basic level of how it works)

Initial Replication
q1)how does the initial replication over the network works while the VM is actually receiving writes at the same time when it is being copied over to the replica site ? - wouldn't the initial replica be totally inconsistent or the copy is done base on snapshot created ?

Hyper-V replication log
q2) Came across this phrase in technet
"The log file is replayed in reverse order to the replica VHD in accordance with the replication frequency"

If i have make the following changes
T1) change dataA  -- captured in HRL#1
T2) change dataB  -- captured in HRL#2

Wouldn't i need to replay the HRLs in proper order (#1, then #2), instead of reversed ?? What's the point of replaying the log in reversed (from the latest to the earliest) ?

Noob

Import VHD to Windows Hyper-V 2016

Hello,

We're unable to import a VM with a VHD to Hyper-V 2016 - it comes up with a page that states "No virtual machine files found".  I've combed the documentation, but I don't see anything about dropping support for the VHD file format.  Is VHD import still supported in Hyper-VM 2016?

Thanks,
Jason

WS2016 VMQ on SET Team members not working correctly

Hi,

we have a new WS2016 Hyper-V Cluster deployment by one of our Customer. We configured the Hyper-V Nodes through SCVMM all with Powershell. All Nodes are identically WS 2016 Core Server. After that we configured the BaseProcessorNumber and the MaxProcessorNumber on the physical 10GB Networkcards on the SET Teaming, like we did on every old WS2012R2 LBFO Team Member deployment. Now if we livemigrate VMs the following Error occoure:

Failed to allocate VMQ for NIC CE8682FA-5F90-4568-A60C-25862F7AB840--5DACFED1-3E19-4980-8CD4-1EBAC4040605 (Friendly Name: vmsrv303) on switch AF32659E-B02A-4CD6-ABEA-3C030E56923D (Friendly Name: HOST-SWITCH). Reason - The OID failed. Status = The request is not supported.

The output of the Get-NetAdapterVmqQueue are empty.

The output on the Get-NetAdapterVmq is like that.

Creating new Cluster error

Hi

I have 2 Windows server 2012 Hyper-V Core edition with 4 NIC, I am trying to configure windows cluster and validation test passed successfully

I get the following Message when running command "New-Cluster –Name CLUName1 –Node Node1,Node2 –StaticAddress 192.168.13.30

"The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship" or

Set password on CLUName1 . The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship.

I checked and i have Enterprise admin rights and Schema Admin. I also ran on Node1 NETDOM RESETPWD /Server:node1  /UserD:Domain\user1 /PasswordD:XXXXX  and on Node2 NETDOM RESETPWD /Server:node2  /UserD:Domain\user1 /PasswordD:XXXXX Both sucessfull.

Hyper-V Windows Server 2012R2 virtual machines that run on a Windows Server 2012R2 Data Center server intermittently become unresponsive until they're stopped and rebooted

We have a Hyper-V manager that runs on Windows Server 2012R2, where one of the virtual machines (it has 3 in total, the problems were seen in 1 of them) intermittently hangs - it can't be reached via RDP or from the hyper-v manager itself. The only thing that helps is stop and restart the VM.

There are no logs, nothing in Event Viewer and we can't find a pattern when this is happening.

I've looked for similar issues in MS support site and found something like we have, but both server and guest have all updates installed, so that's not an option. Also I've found that there was an issue with Broadcom network adapters (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2986895), but that' s not our case.

Some more details:

  • The host and the guest are Windows Server 2012R2 with all critical and optional OS patches installed.
  • VMs do not have any snapshots.
  • It happens during nightly tests run, when the guest is heavily loaded with media processing jobs.
  • The RAID array is 100% healthy.

Could you please advice? Maybe there are some more places where I can get the useful info?

Thanks.

Unable to extend volume on VM disk

I am running Window Serve 2012 R2.  I am trying to extend a disk of a VM. I extended the disk in the VM settings in Hyper-v. However, in computer management/disk management there are 2 disks. I have attached an image. I want to extend drive E, but the extra space show up for drive c. I cannot extend drive e. I can't even extend C:  There is a "healthy storage space" between 'C' and the unallocated space. Is there anyway to extend 'E'?  I set this up a long time ago and cannot remember what I did to get in this state. This is my last ditch effort before scapping the whole thing and creating a new VM or disc.

The unallocated space is listed with disc 0 but I need it with disc 1

Thank for any help.

Simple SET teaming question

Hi folks,

I'm doing a lot of reading about using SET teaming within 2016, and I am trying to play with it and get my head around how it works.

lets say I have 4 x 1GB interfaces, installed in each node of my cluster. To keep it simple lets say I have 2 hosts, and I want to use this lovely new converged networking. My virtual machines generally run over 2 different VLANs (e.g. 100 and 200), and different VLANS for management, live migration and so on.

So to start with - regarding the networking on the VMs:

My understanding is that I would create my team switch first (syntax might be off slightly)

New-vswitch -name "VM_Network" -netapaptername - "NIC1", NIC2", "NIC3", "NIC4" -enableembeddedteaming $true

Get-vm "VM101" | get-vmnetworkadapter | connect-vmnetworkadapter -switchname "VM_Network"

Get-vm "VM201" | get-vmnetworkadapter | connect-vmnetworkadapter -switchname "VM_Network"

Then I need to set the VLAN on the adapter per-vm

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan –VMName "VM101" –Access –VlanId 100

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan –VMName "VM201" –Access –VlanId 200

Am i on the correct lines?

Thanks for any pointers!

Dave

Hyper-V clustered storage

0

Hi,

I am trying to setup my first failover cluster with a couple free Hyper-V 2016 Servers.  I have a Synology for shared stored connected through iSCSI.  I have one LUN connected and formatted on the first host and then I validated and setup a cluster using Failover Cluster Manager.

The validation gave no warnings or errors.  I see my storage listed under Storage->Disks.  From all the online documentation I can find, I am now supposed to right click and select "Add to cluster shared volumes".  However, I do not have that option anywhere!?!?

I don't know what I am missing here.  I appreciate your help!

Server 2016 host server rename and local hyper-v manager issues.

0

If you by chance rename your existing hyper-v server in Server 2016 and you have the full desktop mode installed you might observe the Hyper-v manager not being able to connect to the local hyper-v manager service as well it won't connect to other remote hyper-v servers either. Other hyper-v managers executed remotely on servers not renamed can connect just fine to the server that was renamed. To fix this annoying bug you have to uninstall the hyper-v role and reinstall the hyper-v role on the server that was renamed. In a perfect world my hyper-v servers would be headless, but team members aren't ready for that yet... Please fix as this is in the RTM build.

Processor Compatibility - live migration from Intel Xeon v4 (Broadwell-EP) to Xeon v3 (Haswell) and vice-versa

Hi,

Is it possible to do a live migration from Intel Xeon v4 (Broadwell-EP) to Xeon v3 (Haswell) WITHOUT "Processor Compatibility" enabled in the VM?

i.e. with "Migrate to a physical computer with a different processor" switched off/not enabled.

Or maybe anyone has two such hosts and can check? plz :)

Hi,

Im got hands on some used iron i want to play with Hyper-V with.

I have a work laptop i want to remote manage a hyper-v setup that not in a domain.

  • Hyper-V server:
    OS: Windows 10 PRO
    IP: 192.168.1.5
    Hostname: dev
    In domain: NO
  • Client:
    IP: 192.168.1.10
    OS: Windows 10 PRO
    Hostname: WRK001
    In domain: YES

Anyone know if this is possible and how do i get it up running. Or point me in the right direction.

Have modified the HOSTS file on the client so i can ping the Hyper-V server by it name "dev"

Server 2016 bluescreen vmswitch.sys

Hi all,

I am facing a serious issue on two Hyper-V-hosts with Windows Server 2016 Datacenter.

Without external influence they crash and all guest VMs too. The STOP code is UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP 0x0000007f and it is caused by vmswitch.sys

A simple reboot does not fix this, it always crashes 8 to 10 times in a row until it works properly again.

This problem occurs on two of our servers with completely different hardware.

I tried several versions of the nic driver, but it did not resolve the issue. VMQ is already disabled on the nics and in the VM settings.

Here you can download a recent minidump file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76615769/110416-20546-01.dmp

Do you have any ideas what may cause this problem?

Thank you,
Felix

Greetings.
Basically making a copy of this thread from another resource, but "when I run the setup wizard after "Making Sure you are ready to install" screen the next screen is empty" (c) Mayank

Did anyone else have the same problem? What's the workaround to this issue? I can't afford complete reinstalling here, since I work remotely.

How to get replication to resume automatically? Windows Server 2012 R2

0
0

Hello,

Every now and then replication will stop on a server (maybe once a week).   It is usually just one hyper-v VM on a host with several VMs and which one stops replicating varies.   Every time I click on resume it works every time.   I don't want to have to check on replication several times a week.

I hear system center can be used but that it is a pain to set up.   I would just like them to automatically resume on the VMs set for replication.   I would have to imagine by R2 there is an easy way to automate that.

I'd love a simple option in Hyper-V settings - if replication fails- resume replication after 10 minutes.   I can't figure out why this isn't an option that is obvious for me to find.

Assigning a Separate NIC to VMs

Hi!

Is it beneficial to create 2 NIC Teams if you have 4 NICS in a Server and keep one Team for the Physical Server communication to the network and assign the 2nd Team to the VMs? If yes then what will be the IP Addresses settings for both the Teams?

or

What can be the best performance solution?

Thanks.

VLANs and host NIC teaming

0
0

I have a physical host with 4 teamed NICs.  The NIC team is assigned one VLAN ID via Server Manager in Server 2012R2.  I installed Hyper-V and spun up a VM and assigned a separate VLAN in Hyper-V to that VM.  I created the virtrual switch and pointed the external virtual switch to the 'Microsoft multiplex driver' which I thought was the NIC team on the host.  The physical switch ports are trunked ports so they should allow traffic to the physical VLAN and the virtual VLAN.

My question is...is it possible to use the teamed NIC for network connectivity for the virtual machines?  The teamed NIC is assiged 'VLAN A' while the VM's are assigned 'VLAN B' in Hyper-V, but the virtual switch should be using the teamed NIC.

If that is not possible, I am assuming I will team three NICS and use them for the 'virtuals VLAN' and use one NIC for the host.

It would be great if the teamed NIC with all four NICS teamed could be used for host connectivity via one VLAN and VM connectivity via another VLAN assigned through Hyper-V.  Hope this makes sense.

Any help is appreciated.

Interrupted VM stuck

I was doing updates on my 2012R2 Hyper-V VM and power dropped. When I booted my host PC back up the VM would start and say Hyper-V Updating your system (x%) and get stuck at 5%. I can't get past this and I have no snapshots/backups of the VM. Is there anyway to recover this VM?
