Running dual bootable operating system like linux with Hyper-V using disk partition

$

Dear sisters/brothers in  technical excellency.

I have Windows 10 machine (I love it) as my main OS and then I have Ubuntu 16 LTS (I love it too) in another partition in my disk. I have Lenovo T460s and I have done so that

1) I can dual boot my machine with Windows EFI menu to Windows or Ubuntu.

2)I have also managed to turn off Hyper-V and use Oracle VirtualBox to run this Ubuntu from real partition without problems (with help of extra boot.iso) so that my main OS is Windows and slave system is Ubuntu.  Only situations when I need full CPU power, I boot it to Ubuntu.

Question: As a friend of Hyper-V and Windows docker, I would like to make same with Hyper-V, but no success? Can I run real hardisk partition (not whole disk) with Hyper-V as slave OS.

Is it possible at all?

Hyper-V VM Generation 2 - How to boot from .ISO

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Kenny

Server 2012 R2 to 2016 Live Migration crashing vmms.exe on 2016

I just installed a new 2016 server and added it to my failover cluster. This cluster has 4 2012 R2 machines that I plan on upgrading to 2016. I can add the server and everything looks fine, but when I try to live migrate machines vmms.exe will crash on the new 2016 server. I can randomly get machines to migrate over, but it is rare. I've also had 1 machine reboot on me during testing. Here is the event log:

Replicating from a replication server with Hyper-V?

Hello,

We have a production server in Los Angeles with several hyper-v guest machines on it.   We have a secondary host at that location for replication only - nothing production running on it.

We will be putting in a third replication server in our Philadelphia location.    It will be for replication only in the even LA falls into a burning heap.

Is there a way to make the replication to PA only replication occur from the replica server - not the production box?   It looks like if we go to the replica server in la it has an option to extend replica - just want to make sure that is how it works.

Thanks

Hyper-V Server 2016 Live Migration

Hi guys,

Maybe you can help me with this.

Just upgraded my lab from 2012 R2 to 2016 Hyper-V (cluster). I have 2 Hyper-V 2016 HV1/HV2 and 1 management machine M1 (Windows 10). Upgrade was completed with no issues.

Issue: Before upgrade Live migration was working with no issues (i have 1 VM on local HDD on one of the hosts). Now if i want to migrate the VM in question from one host to other one is failling with "No credentials are available in thesecurity package (0x8009030E)" giving the fact that Constrained Delegation is in place. I perform this operation from M1 machine.

I had no issues on Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have latest RSAT.

Tahnk you.

Server 2012 R2 Guest will shutdown when told to reboot

Hyper-V Host is Server 2012 R2

Guest is Server 2012 R2

When rebooting the guest either from the console or Remote Desktop, the guest will shutdown instead of rebooting.

How do I go about diagnosing this issue. I'm looking for useful logs or tools to nut out why a guest would act this way.

Specify VLAN Tag for MGMT NIC

$

Hey all,

I just finished installing Windows Server 2016 Nano Hyper-V.

Now I installed this on a laptop just to play around with Hyper-V.

I decided to make one of my NICs on my switch a trunk port based one, since the laptop only has one NIC I need this for any vSwitchs I setup and play with VMs so they are in other networks over this one link.

However to my dismay in the #8 Configure Network did not have an option to specify a VLAN Tag for this network.

Unless I can specify this VLAN tag, I won't be able to ping/reach the server. I'd have to revert to access mode on my switch but then I'd be unable to do vlans for other vswitches.

I just did think of a workaround, and that's to set the MGMT vlan as the native vlan for that trunk port.

However I'd still liek to know if this is a possibility or not in my setup?

Get-WmiObject not returning information for the local machine.

I am trying to get the configuration ID for my VMs using Get-WmiObject command in Windows PowerShell. I am able to do so when I run it against other servers with the following command but it will not work for the local machine.

Get-WmiObject -ComputerName $VM_SERVER -Namespace root\virtualization\v2 -class Msvm_virtualSystemsettingData | select elementname, ConfigurationID

When I run the command against the local server with or without the -ComputerName tag the command returns nothing.

VM was turned off

Hi all,

Need your help regarding a new issue we have been facing in our environment. We have a server 2012 R2 Hyper-V environment. It is a failover cluster. We have observed every few days, few random VMs would just reboot automatically. The guest OS complains that it has been rebooted without cleanly shutdown. On the Hyper-V host, I see this message following by another one that VM has been started successfully. Now I already have confirmed that no user has turned this machine off (also evident by the User field in the message). I see no other failures or errors. Any ideas what to look for next ?

Thanks,

Hyper-V Server 2016 Replication Issues, stuck on Creating a reference point

$

Hi all,

Config: 2 Node Cluster, with Windows SMB 3 Storage for VM's

I took the plunge, and migrated from Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 to 2016, and have had some fun and games on the way...  I've now got one major issue, and was hoping someone would shed some light on the issue:

Enable replication for a VM, whilst it is powered off.  Replication completes successfully.  When I power up the VM, changes are detected and replication kicks off to copy the changes to the replica.  At the same time there is a new "Creating a reference point" part which starts off, and this is where the issue is.... it is getting stuck there at around 50%.  I can't shut the VM down, power off doesn't work, can't kill the process, or shut the Host down, apart from a Physical power off.

Host Event Log Entry that ties in with the issue is:
'VMTEST01' timed out while waiting to perform the 'Cleaning up stale reference point(s)' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Creating a reference point'

I have tried a few different VM's, cleanly built, and they have the same issue.

The exact same setup on 2012 R2 worked perfectly.

Any ideas?

Issue with CSV volumes access from another node on Hyper-V 2012 R2

$

Hi,

We have an Hyper-V infrastructure which is composed of 6 nodes running on Windows 2012 R2 (HP servers with the same materials). 4 "Cluster Shared Volume" have been created, together with a Quorum.

When we assign a CSV to another node, we have no problem, except with the node n°5. In this case, when a CSV is assigned to node n°5, only the node n°5 can see the content of the volume in the Windows Explorer. The other nodes cannot.

From the other nodes, we have this error message :

"C:\ClusterStorage\VolumeXXX is not accessible. Logon failure : the user has not been granted the requested logon at this computer".

We also note that the size of the assigned volume doesn't appear on the other nodes in the Windows Explorer.

What is amazing is that we encountered no issues with the virtual machines.

I have read many forum on the Net. Talking about SMB which could be disabled, but like the storage is connected by Fibre Channel, it doesn't seem to apply to us. Furthermore, the components "Clients for Microsoft Network" and "File and Print Sharing..." are enabled on the network cards dedicated to the cluster.

One last information. The node n°5 has been reinstalled from a Sysprep image, but the problem is still there.

Can you help us ?

Best regards.

Laurent

Virtual Machine BIOS Serial Number Powershell

Hi,

I would like to create a virtual machine and then get the serial number of that VM using PowerShell,

The best i seem to be able to find is using a WMI query using this code

Get-WmiObject-ComputerName MyVMName -Namespace `
root\virtualization\v2 -class Msvm_VirtualSystemSettingData `|select elementname, BIOSSerialNumber

The code is dated probably before hyper-v has a powershell module, i was wondering if anyone knew of a powershell command to get this information rather than WMI?

Thanks

Steve

Windows Guest VM Frozen

Hi,

I am running 6 guest VM on a single host running hyper-v on server 2012r2 datacentre edition. All my guest vms are also running windows server 2012 R2 datacentre edition. Lately I have been experiencing random guest VM freezing. All you can see is the frozen windows server 2012 from the console. I am not able to RDP to the VM and also not able to logon from the console of hyper-V. However I can ping the guest VM fine and file access is also working fine. Now this does not happen to one guest VM but is random and can be any guest VM. I have gone through the log and I didn't find any thing unusual. The only way out is to turn off the VM and start again and then it works fine.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

SUSHH

Hyper-V No "New" button in the action pane

I have installed R2 and the Hyper-V component, virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.  My problem is there is no "New" option in the Action Pane of the Hyper-V Manager.

My version of R2 Enterprise installed is 64 bit and off the disk that comes with the MCITP Server 2008 Enterprise Core Training Kit put out by Microsoft.  My laptop is an HP dv7-3085dx (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01896913&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=4041797&lang=en).  The server software is the one and only active OS partition on the hard drive.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Cannot connect to VMs after changing domains

$

Hello

I'm running Hyper-V full installation on 2012 R2.  The Hyper-V server's domain was changed to a new AD domain and since then, I'm not able to connect to any of the VMs.

In Hyper-V Manager, when I right click on the VM and select Connect, I get "Your credentials did not work, The credentials that were used to connect to machinename.domainname did not work.  Please enter new credentials" Windows security prompt.  Even after manually entering in the credentials that has admin privileges to both the Hyper-V server itself and the target VM that I'm trying to connect to, I keep on getting the same Windows security prompt.

When I try to RDP into the same VM outside of Hyper-V using the same credentials, I can get in just fine so it's not the credentials I'm using.

I did create a new certificate after changing domains in certificates - service account -  Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management.
In the event log, I do see the event ID 4625 events and for the computer name, it shows the old domain name even though its primary suffix has been changed to the new domain after the domain change.

Computername: hostname.old domain name
