Server 2016 Hyper-V Virtual Machine Always Turns Off

$

If I try to restart a virtual machine, hyper-v always turns them off instead of rebooting.  I have to use the hyper-v manager to manually start every instance if a restart was issued within the VM.  It does not seem to matter what OS the VM is, it happens with Linux, server 2016 and 2012 R2 instances.

I notice an error:  'VM-****' could not reinitialize. (Virtual machine ID *******-****-****-****-************)

I thought at first it might be permissions but the hyper-v host is in an OU with blocked inheritance.

What might be causing VM's to fail to reinitialize?

Hyper-V CSV 20TB IBM v3700 SAN

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with our current setup: Two hosts and a v3700 SAN. Each host has 2x 2-Port Fibre Channel adapters directly connected to the SAN. MPIO is configured with IBM drivers and according to IBM the pathing is good.

The problem I'm encountering is when we launch a checkpoint on either of the hosts the entire network slows to a crawl. I know checkpoints aren't recommended in production but we use Veeam and Veeam uses checkpoints to do it's backups. I have other places with the exact same setup that do not have this issue. The only major difference is the size of the volume (20 Terabytes) for the place with the problem compared to 5 - 6 TB at other places.

I'm taking a shot in the dark and looking for any ideas.

Thanks,

Hyper-V - Legacy NIC not getting DHCP address at boot, but when OS loads the NIC gets a DHCP address

Dear All,

I have a strange issue with DHCP.

I have a lab environment on a single Hyper-v 2012 Server.  AD, DNS & DHCP exist on a Single virtual machine and one Client machine on this network.  I have authorized DHCP and Setup the scope, it is working fine.

Client VM Machine has a legacy adaptor, the legacy nic is configured in the boot order as the first device.

When I boot the machine I do not get a DHCP address, however when the OS boots the Legacy NIC then gets a DHCP address.

I need to use a legacy NIC as I need to PXE boot the VM, however I should get an IP address at boot time, which I don't get.

I have disabled all firewalls and I see no reason for this not to work.  I have done this before with no issues but I am unable to get this to work on this server!!!!! I tried by assigning Static IP but no luck.

Problem summary - "I'm not getting ip address while booting. Once Windows loaded it gets IP address"

Please help. Thanks

Dinesh

VM was turned off

Hi all,

Need your help regarding a new issue we have been facing in our environment. We have a server 2012 R2 Hyper-V environment. It is a failover cluster. We have observed every few days, few random VMs would just reboot automatically. The guest OS complains that it has been rebooted without cleanly shutdown. On the Hyper-V host, I see this message following by another one that VM has been started successfully. Now I already have confirmed that no user has turned this machine off (also evident by the User field in the message). I see no other failures or errors. Any ideas what to look for next ?

Thanks,

Fresh installed Server 2016 kills VMs during shutdown although configured to save state

Hi, and the next one... Title should say it all: A brand new fresh installed HPE Server with Windows Server 2016 14393.351 kills the (single) VM (also 14393.351) during Host shutdown despite the configuration saying Save State.

After restart, in Eventlog on the host you can read shutting down/Saving VMs, and in the same second "The VM Version 8.0 is not supported" - how crazy is that? The machine is killed and will be started up (crashed) on host reboot.

Current Workaround is to set the VM to Shutdown/Start everytime the host reboots.

Hello and good morning/afternoon.

We are experiencing problems adding Hyper-V hosts in to SCVMM.

The procedure itself (Adding host to SCVMM) completed successfully,

But right after the job has finished, the host is getting BSOD with "Inaccessible Boot Device" Massage.

I have tried multiple hosts and SCVMMs but it still happens...

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!

I can install an esxi host and connect to it within 5 seconds. Why is hyperV such a problem. Win 10 professional, Server 2016 hyperV and no luck

Guest crashed during backup using Symantec Backup Exec, won't show login screen but will boot up.

Hi,

I have a server 2008 box that crashed while it was being backed up and somehow the snapshot chain got broken. I manually merged all the VHD files back into a single VHD and now the server will boot, but it will not show the login screen. I know that it is booted because I can hit the shift key 5 times to bring up the sticky keys option. Can someone please help, I have tried many things including: Safe mode, last known good, running the bootsect /nt60 all /force command, all to no avail and the server just keeps showing the black screen. Restoring from backup is the absolute last option as the last good backup was now a few days ago.

Thanks in advance!

How to get replication to resume automatically? Windows Server 2012 R2

$

Hello,

Every now and then replication will stop on a server (maybe once a week).   It is usually just one hyper-v VM on a host with several VMs and which one stops replicating varies.   Every time I click on resume it works every time.   I don't want to have to check on replication several times a week.

I hear system center can be used but that it is a pain to set up.   I would just like them to automatically resume on the VMs set for replication.   I would have to imagine by R2 there is an easy way to automate that.

I'd love a simple option in Hyper-V settings - if replication fails- resume replication after 10 minutes.   I can't figure out why this isn't an option that is obvious for me to find.

Interrupted VM stuck

I was doing updates on my 2012R2 Hyper-V VM and power dropped. When I booted my host PC back up the VM would start and say Hyper-V Updating your system (x%) and get stuck at 5%. I can't get past this and I have no snapshots/backups of the VM. Is there anyway to recover this VM?

I have 3 Hyper-V Host Servers that get the error "not enough storage is available to process this command" when i try to update license status in VAMT.

all servers have enough disk space and are now asking to be activated.

All other servers and workstations are fine.

Hyper-V Replication - Initial Replication and HRL understanding

$

Hi all,

I am totally new to hyper-V replication so the questions below might sound silly (while i am trying to understand a basic level of how it works)

Initial Replication
q1)how does the initial replication over the network works while the VM is actually receiving writes at the same time when it is being copied over to the replica site ? - wouldn't the initial replica be totally inconsistent or the copy is done base on snapshot created ?

Hyper-V replication log
q2) Came across this phrase in technet
"The log file is replayed in reverse order to the replica VHD in accordance with the replication frequency"

If i have make the following changes
T1) change dataA  -- captured in HRL#1
T2) change dataB  -- captured in HRL#2

Wouldn't i need to replay the HRLs in proper order (#1, then #2), instead of reversed ?? What's the point of replaying the log in reversed (from the latest to the earliest) ?

Noob

VLANs and host NIC teaming

$

I have a physical host with 4 teamed NICs.  The NIC team is assigned one VLAN ID via Server Manager in Server 2012R2.  I installed Hyper-V and spun up a VM and assigned a separate VLAN in Hyper-V to that VM.  I created the virtrual switch and pointed the external virtual switch to the 'Microsoft multiplex driver' which I thought was the NIC team on the host.  The physical switch ports are trunked ports so they should allow traffic to the physical VLAN and the virtual VLAN.

My question is...is it possible to use the teamed NIC for network connectivity for the virtual machines?  The teamed NIC is assiged 'VLAN A' while the VM's are assigned 'VLAN B' in Hyper-V, but the virtual switch should be using the teamed NIC.

If that is not possible, I am assuming I will team three NICS and use them for the 'virtuals VLAN' and use one NIC for the host.

It would be great if the teamed NIC with all four NICS teamed could be used for host connectivity via one VLAN and VM connectivity via another VLAN assigned through Hyper-V.  Hope this makes sense.

Any help is appreciated.

Is there a standalone Hyper v Server ?

I have a high spec server I want to setup as a Hyper V VM Server to host a number of VMs for employees. I dont want to purchase the Server 2012/2016 Datacentre as its just far too expenisve. Is there a Hyper-V Standalone out there which is cheaper - Ive had a good luck but cant see anything.

I see theres some talk of a 2016 Hyper V standalone but cant find it anywhere?

Hyper-V VLAN tagging using one NIC for VMs?

$

Hello folks,

I have one stand alone Hyper-V host with two NICs.  NIC1 I use for management and connecting to it via RDP (untagged VLAN1).  NIC2 I want to use for VMs on multiple VLANs.  I followed these steps so far, but VM is not getting an IP from my DHCP server on VLAN1 that I've specified.

Any comments or help?  :)

My steps so far:

1. Configure Cisco 2960G switchport connected to NIC2 for trunk and vlans.

interface GigabitEthernet0/11

switchport mode trunk

switchport trunk allowed vlan 1-4

2. Configure Virtual switch on Hyper-V host.  I did not check Allow management, because I am using NIC1 for that.

3. Configure VM NIC and assign VLAN ID, in this case VLAN 1 for a test.

4. Does not get an IP from the DHCP server.  I also tried a static IP, unable to communicate, so I know something is wrong.

How VSS based backup works in hyperv 2016 for standard checkpoint and production checkpoint?

$

The checkpoint type of a virtual machine is set to production only. The VSS service inside the virtual machine is set to disabled state. Now from the hyperV Manager if we try to create a checkpoint, it fails. ( expected as VSS service in the guest VM cannot be started).

From a third party backup requestor application(which uses host VSS) a snapshot is triggered. The snapshot creation was successful. The expectation was the snapshot creation would fail. This triggered me a question on VSS based snapshot on windows 2016 for hyperv.

  • Is there any technet page that explains the steps involved in backup process in Windows 2016 for Hyperv? (likehttps://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd405549(v=vs.85).aspx#details_on_the_hyper-v_vss_writer for earlier versions)
  • Does host VSS writer doesnt follow the VM's checkpoint type configuration ?

Manage Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V from Win 10 LTSB 2016 client = "...could not access an expected WMI class..."

Trying to access Hyper-V running on Server 2012 R2 from Windows 10 LTSB 2016 and I only get an error:

The Hyper-V Management Tools could not access an expected WMI class on computer....

Same server accessed from Windows 8.1 H-V Management Tools is working fine.

Anybody any idea?

According to this it should be no issue

Correct NTP settings for Hyper-V with PDC as guest

$

Hi!

I'm setting up a new domain including new servers. Currently all of them are running on one Hyper-V server.

The PDC is running on the Hyper-V host, which currently isn't in the domain. A couple of other 2016 servers are in the domain, where ntp-settings are automatically changed when joining the domain.

Although when running the following command on any guest (domain joined)

w32tm.exe /query /source

the result is

VM IC Time Synchronization Provider

Is this recommended? I'm also thinking about what will happen when I join the Hyper-V host to the domain, which is running in a VM on the host... NTP loop?

There are a lot of articles on this, I know, but some tell you to disable time sync in integration services, while some explicitly tells you to NOT EVER disable it due to drifting.

What do I do here? This is what makes somewhat sense to me:

  • Sync Hyper-V host to external NTP
  • Sync all VMs through Hyper-V host, including PDC to keep from drifting
  • Sync all physical computers to PDC

I would appreciate any thoughts on this.
