Replication of VM between two Hper-V servers

Hi,

Our all infrastructure is running on Hyper-V virtualization and to secure critical applications did copy of VM's on other hyper-v server. I am facing an issue that if I replicate any of my VM from source to target Hyper-V server the machine on target server goes shutdown to update replication and then needs to open the target server shutdown VM then first remove the replication settings then open the VM.

Please guide this is the normal behavior of VM while replication from source to target or I missed some thing to configure in replication.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V - Legacy NIC not getting DHCP address at boot, but when OS loads the NIC gets a DHCP address

Dear All,

I have a strange issue with DHCP.

I have a lab environment on a single Hyper-v 2012 Server.  AD, DNS & DHCP exist on a Single virtual machine and one Client machine on this network.  I have authorized DHCP and Setup the scope, it is working fine.

Client VM Machine has a legacy adaptor, the legacy nic is configured in the boot order as the first device.

When I boot the machine I do not get a DHCP address, however when the OS boots the Legacy NIC then gets a DHCP address.

I need to use a legacy NIC as I need to PXE boot the VM, however I should get an IP address at boot time, which I don't get.

I have disabled all firewalls and I see no reason for this not to work.  I have done this before with no issues but I am unable to get this to work on this server!!!!! I tried by assigning Static IP but no luck.

Problem summary - "I'm not getting ip address while booting. Once Windows loaded it gets IP address"

Please help. Thanks

Dinesh

It is impossible to inplace upgrade Hyper-V-Core 2012 R2 to 2016

$

-see title-

Steps to reproduce:

-install hyper-v-core server 2012 R2 (no need to patch it afterwards as it makes no difference)

-logon, start setup of 2016 hyper-v-core server

Setup will offer to inplace upgrade and keep data and settings.

Expected behavior: just that.

Actual behavior: setup stalls with a clear blue window and the log files setupact.log and setuperr.log indicate no activity anymore, for hours. The last line in the activity log is

Info: MOUPG Compatibility Starting Wait

Please feel free to reproduce it. It happens on any hardware, even on a (nested) virtual machine.

What can be the issue?

Installing Hyper-V 2016 on a USB memory stick

Hi!

I've been using VMware in the past, but I'm currently setting up a 2016 std server, where I'd like Hyper-V 2016 to run on a USB stick. I've heard that this is a good idea, especially when you're trying to preserve disk space.

2012 R2 has a write-up on how to install Hyper-V to a USB memory stick, how about 2016?

Is it still a good practice?

Which USB drives are recommended? The ones listed from the 2012 R2 article are not available anymore.

Regarding licensing, if I install Hyper-V 2016 on a USB stick, does the Standard license allow me two instances of Server 2016 to run on that hypervisor?

'VM' requires resync because it is about to run out of disk space 'D:\vmhdds' available space is less than 300 MB

Hello,

We are currently trying to get Hyper-V Replica to work on our server setup, we have done this successfully many times, however on one particular server we keep getting the error in Event Viewer:

'VM' requires resynchronization because it is about to run out of disk space on 'D:\vmhdds\' available space is less than 300 MB.

The D:\ drive on the host machine (the one running the VM) has 250+ GB free, and there are no disk/folder quotas active.

The VM's HDD size is 1.44TB and the server being replicated to has 1.8TB free. The 'Sending initial replication' phase completes successfully, however from my monitoring, I can see that the task overall fails at "Merge in progress" at around 20-30% - and the above error is logged in Event Viewer.

Any ideas on solving this problem?

VM was turned off

Hi all,

Need your help regarding a new issue we have been facing in our environment. We have a server 2012 R2 Hyper-V environment. It is a failover cluster. We have observed every few days, few random VMs would just reboot automatically. The guest OS complains that it has been rebooted without cleanly shutdown. On the Hyper-V host, I see this message following by another one that VM has been started successfully. Now I already have confirmed that no user has turned this machine off (also evident by the User field in the message). I see no other failures or errors. Any ideas what to look for next ?

Thanks,

Hyper-V Windows Server 2012R2 virtual machines that run on a Windows Server 2012R2 Data Center server intermittently become unresponsive until they're stopped and rebooted

We have a Hyper-V manager that runs on Windows Server 2012R2, where one of the virtual machines (it has 3 in total, the problems were seen in 1 of them) intermittently hangs - it can't be reached via RDP or from the hyper-v manager itself. The only thing that helps is stop and restart the VM.

There are no logs, nothing in Event Viewer and we can't find a pattern when this is happening.

I've looked for similar issues in MS support site and found something like we have, but both server and guest have all updates installed, so that's not an option. Also I've found that there was an issue with Broadcom network adapters (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2986895), but that' s not our case.

Some more details:

  • The host and the guest are Windows Server 2012R2 with all critical and optional OS patches installed.
  • VMs do not have any snapshots.
  • It happens during nightly tests run, when the guest is heavily loaded with media processing jobs.
  • The RAID array is 100% healthy.

Could you please advice? Maybe there are some more places where I can get the useful info?

Thanks.

Problem Remotely Connecting to VM via Remote Desktop Connection

$

I have a Windows 7 VM running in Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 R2. Because of the hands on work needed with the HOST i have it set up to access remotely via Remote Desktop Connection. I need to also connect to the VM via RDC at any given moment for testing purposes. However, while i can connect to the HOST via RDC with the correct authenticated login i cannot get RDC to connect to my VM. The server does run Active Domain while my VM is on its own WORKGROUP. The VM is networked to the External NIC of the HOST and has a static IP address that is visible from the router admin page.

I have read and done the Set up Internal Network Interface in Hyper-V, shared the connection from HOST NIC to the Virtual Switch internal interface. Also changed the PORT used for RDC in the VM to 3391 in RegEdit and allowed the port through VM firewall, as well as HOST firewall and fort forwarded the port from router. Also setting the Virtual Server Port to VM IP in router as well.

I try to log into the VM through RDC with 192.168.X.X:3391 w/ username. But no connection is made. Can someone tell me where i am going wrong with this?

Specify VLAN Tag for MGMT NIC

$

Hey all,

I just finished installing Windows Server 2016 Nano Hyper-V.

Now I installed this on a laptop just to play around with Hyper-V.

I decided to make one of my NICs on my switch a trunk port based one, since the laptop only has one NIC I need this for any vSwitchs I setup and play with VMs so they are in other networks over this one link.

However to my dismay in the #8 Configure Network did not have an option to specify a VLAN Tag for this network.

Unless I can specify this VLAN tag, I won't be able to ping/reach the server. I'd have to revert to access mode on my switch but then I'd be unable to do vlans for other vswitches.

I just did think of a workaround, and that's to set the MGMT vlan as the native vlan for that trunk port.

However I'd still liek to know if this is a possibility or not in my setup?

Unable to extend volume on VM disk

$

I am running Window Serve 2012 R2.  I am trying to extend a disk of a VM. I extended the disk in the VM settings in Hyper-v. However, in computer management/disk management there are 2 disks. I have attached an image. I want to extend drive E, but the extra space show up for drive c. I cannot extend drive e. I can't even extend C:  There is a "healthy storage space" between 'C' and the unallocated space. Is there anyway to extend 'E'?  I set this up a long time ago and cannot remember what I did to get in this state. This is my last ditch effort before scapping the whole thing and creating a new VM or disc.

The unallocated space is listed with disc 0 but I need it with disc 1

Thank for any help.

We got plenty off EventID 12289 and 8193 How to get rid off them?

Hi,

We have some problem with error messages in our Clustered Scale Out File servers in combination with Clustered Hyper-V environment.

We have 2 SOFS cluster with 2 host each.

Each Server is configured  with 2 Volume with 16,9 TB

This Volume are shared in the Cluster as Cluster Shared Volumes

And this share are shared to Hyper-V cluster and on this Shares we have the VM:s

The problem (error messages ) we got on the SOFS Servers is following

EventID 12289:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error while calling GetStorageDependencyInformation. hr = 0x8007048f, The device is not connected.

.

Operation:

  Automatically choosing a diff-area volume

  Processing EndPrepareSnapshots

Context:

  Execution Context: System Provider

Error-specific details:

Error: (0x8007048f) The device is not connected.

EventID 8193:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine GetVolumePathName is fail on the path \\fasofs01.your.domain.com\vdisk01, winerror 0x0000007b.. hr = 0x8007007b, The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

We got this error on every SOFS Host every day but different times.

And the amount off the error messages are different on the servers and the times too.

I have tried to find anything on the Internet but not find a good solution.

We use Veeam has a backup system and the backup seems to work from a Veeam perspective.

So what do we have to do to get rid of this errors

Best Regards

Jörg Wiesemann

Hyper-V Server 2016 Live Migration

Hi guys,

Maybe you can help me with this.

Just upgraded my lab from 2012 R2 to 2016 Hyper-V (cluster). I have 2 Hyper-V 2016 HV1/HV2 and 1 management machine M1 (Windows 10). Upgrade was completed with no issues.

Issue: Before upgrade Live migration was working with no issues (i have 1 VM on local HDD on one of the hosts). Now if i want to migrate the VM in question from one host to other one is failling with "No credentials are available in thesecurity package (0x8009030E)" giving the fact that Constrained Delegation is in place. I perform this operation from M1 machine.

I had no issues on Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have latest RSAT.

Tahnk you.

Using Powershell for Hyper-V

Hi,

when I tried to use the powershell cmdlets for Hyper-V, I got an error that the cmdlet is unknown. That's why I would like to import the module, but it didn't work. Same error.

Is this cmdlet wrong? (for Server 2008 R2)

Expand disk displays incorrect disk space.

Running Hyper-V. Host and VMs are 2008 R2.

I expanded an almost used up disk from 40 GB to 80 GB. It had 1GB of free space.

Disk Management displays the C partition with 80 GB on the bottom half and 40 GB on the top half. See image. I restarted the machine after noticing this. Still displays the same.

I've expanded disks on other VMs with no issues. Any suggestions?
