'VM' requires resync because it is about to run out of disk space 'D:\vmhdds' available space is less than 300 MB

Hello,

We are currently trying to get Hyper-V Replica to work on our server setup, we have done this successfully many times, however on one particular server we keep getting the error in Event Viewer:

'VM' requires resynchronization because it is about to run out of disk space on 'D:\vmhdds\' available space is less than 300 MB.

The D:\ drive on the host machine (the one running the VM) has 250+ GB free, and there are no disk/folder quotas active.

The VM's HDD size is 1.44TB and the server being replicated to has 1.8TB free. The 'Sending initial replication' phase completes successfully, however from my monitoring, I can see that the task overall fails at "Merge in progress" at around 20-30% - and the above error is logged in Event Viewer.

Any ideas on solving this problem?

Hello Everyone!

Just asked myself and google if it would be possible to set up Hyper-V Replica between a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2012 R2 and a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2016... did not find a good answer though.

Does someone know the answer?

Thanks,
Jens

Moving storage to a new folder but not all drives in the same folder.

Howdy,

We are reorganizing our Cluster Shared Volumes so we can have better redundancy.  We are going to need to move all of our VM's Storage to new folder.  Same Cluster.  Same Host.  Just a different folder.  But we have 100+ VMs we'll need to move

I found this blog that explains the move-vmstorage command but I have a question:
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/taylorb/2012/07/18/performing-storage-migrations-with-move-vmstorage/

Our VMs usually have 3 VHDx files.  C drive, D drive, and Pagefile drive.  What I want to do is move the VM, the main VHDX file, the Pagefile Drive, the snapshots, config files, etc all to one folder.  Except, I want to move the "D drive" to it's own folder.

The blog states how to move individual files but not everything except certain pieces or how to do the snapshots, config filesm etc.

Would it be easiest to do a move-vmstorage to move everything to one folder and then run it again and specify just to move the D drive to its own folder?  Or would it be better to manually specify moving the individual things to the first location and then again to the second?

Does that make sense?

Thanks.

Hyper-V Server 2016 - Creating VM Switch blocks all traffic on interface

$

I have a Zotac CI323 mini PC. I planning on running Hyper-V Server 2016 with a pfSense guest for routing and firewalling.

The PC has two gigabit interfaces - both are Realtek 8868G chips.

I intend on using one for the LAN connection, and the other for WAN.

My problem is that when I create a VM Switch on the LAN interface ("Ethernet"), all traffic is blocked. My host and guests cannot communicate on that interface. Analysis with Wireshark shows, for example with pings, that an ARP is sent out from the host, and the remote computer sends back an ARP reply, but presumably that reply never gets back to the host once it reaches the interface. Removing the VM Switch restores connectivity.

Meanwhile, my intended WAN interface ("Ethernet 2") works fine with a VM Switch enabled - traffic passes without any problems, from the host and from the guest. Despite being the same chipset.

So far, I've tried the following steps:

Disable firewall

Reset IP stack

Configure static/DHCP IP on interface

Install latest Realtek drivers (v10.010.0714.2016)

Install latest Windows updates.

Verified switch VLAN port settings.

Checking NIC settings using NVSPBind.

Hyper-v Network management category changed to "Public"

I recently configured NIC Teaming on a new 2012 r2 Hyper-V server in our environment. From that NIC team 3 virtual converged networks were setup. One of those virtual network adapters is used to manage our Hyper-V Host server.

The issue were experiencing is that the management NIC is being categorized as "public network" instead of a "domain" network. This Host server is joined to the domain and does not have any virtual machines configured yet. Each of the three net adapters were setup with separate VLANs and QOS.

The only time I can get this server to stay in the "Domain" category is if I disable and re-enable the network adapter or if I restart the Network Location Awareness service. The Host will stay in this category until it is rebooted.

We got plenty off EventID 12289 and 8193 How to get rid off them?

Hi,

We have some problem with error messages in our Clustered Scale Out File servers in combination with Clustered Hyper-V environment.

We have 2 SOFS cluster with 2 host each.

Each Server is configured  with 2 Volume with 16,9 TB

This Volume are shared in the Cluster as Cluster Shared Volumes

And this share are shared to Hyper-V cluster and on this Shares we have the VM:s

The problem (error messages ) we got on the SOFS Servers is following

EventID 12289:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error while calling GetStorageDependencyInformation. hr = 0x8007048f, The device is not connected.

.

Operation:

  Automatically choosing a diff-area volume

  Processing EndPrepareSnapshots

Context:

  Execution Context: System Provider

Error-specific details:

Error: (0x8007048f) The device is not connected.

EventID 8193:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine GetVolumePathName is fail on the path \\fasofs01.your.domain.com\vdisk01, winerror 0x0000007b.. hr = 0x8007007b, The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

We got this error on every SOFS Host every day but different times.

And the amount off the error messages are different on the servers and the times too.

I have tried to find anything on the Internet but not find a good solution.

We use Veeam has a backup system and the backup seems to work from a Veeam perspective.

So what do we have to do to get rid of this errors

Hyper-V Server 2016 Live Migration

Hi guys,

Maybe you can help me with this.

Just upgraded my lab from 2012 R2 to 2016 Hyper-V (cluster). I have 2 Hyper-V 2016 HV1/HV2 and 1 management machine M1 (Windows 10). Upgrade was completed with no issues.

Issue: Before upgrade Live migration was working with no issues (i have 1 VM on local HDD on one of the hosts). Now if i want to migrate the VM in question from one host to other one is failling with "No credentials are available in thesecurity package (0x8009030E)" giving the fact that Constrained Delegation is in place. I perform this operation from M1 machine.

I had no issues on Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have latest RSAT.

Tahnk you.

Unable to move VM between Nano Hyper-V Hosts

$

Due to the nature of Nano Hyper-V hosts the hosts must be managed from another device.

So, I have a 2016 Server with the Hyper-V Manager console installed.  From this server I am attempting to perform a VM Move from HostA to Host B.

Move VM Wizard

As this is actually being performed from the management device there is a double credential hop when performing this action, and it failed.

With error 0x8009030E The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host: No credentials are available in the security package.

Following this article: https://technet.microsoft.com/fi-fi/windows-server-docs/compute/hyper-v/deploy/set-up-hosts-for-live-migration-without-failover-clustering

I changed both Nano Hosts Live Migration Settings to Use Kerberos and I enabled constrained delegation for the two servers to point to the other hyps to try and solve this issue.

This did not resolve the problem and I am still unable to initiate a VM move from one Nano Hyp to the other Nano Hyp.

Relevant configuration:

This is a 3-node cluster (all Nano hosts) being managed from a 2016 Server with the Hyper-V Manager console installed.  All nano Hyps are joined to the same domain. For VMs that are HA Live Migrations work fine.  The server I'm using to manage the Hyps and perform the move is also joined to the same domain.

This issue is presenting itself when I build a VM locally on local storage to a Hyp and then attempt to initiate a VM move to another node in the cluster, also to local storage (something I have done often without issue in 2012R2).

I have seen this issue before on 2012R2 hosts and it could be easily solved by logging into the host and initiating the move locally from the host.

But, as that is not possible with Nano, I'm open to suggestions on this issue.

Nano Server 2016 w/Hyper-V; Cannot format with ReFS "The specified file system is not supported"

$

Hi!

I'm setting up a Nano Server with Hyper-V. And after a lot of back and forth, I'm starting to get close.

It's a standalone system with 6x64GB SSDs in OBR5. This is split into two virtual drives (sliced array AFAIK), one with 16GB and one with the rest (277GB). Nano is installed to the 16GB one, on a 12GB partition together with system and reserved.

I'm now trying to format the second virtual drive, which I created because I wanted ReFS, which cannot be used on the system drive. The original thought was a single virtual drive with a C: partition for Nano Hyper-V, and D: partition for the VMs, instead of using sliced array, which could create potential problems in the future.

(Some recommend separating with two virtual drives like I've done to separate host from VMs, but it limits the array, as it can no longer be extended, and disaster recovery is complicated).

But as this wasn't possible with ReFS, I redid the array configuration, and do now have a separate virtual drive which I want to use as "D:" with ReFS formatting, which I was recommended with 2016 Hyper-V.

The problem - I'm still not able to format with ReFS!!!

When running:

Format-Volume -Driveletter D -FileSystem ReFS -AllocationUnitSize 65536

I get "Format-Volume : The specified file system is not supported"

WHY?!

Is it Nano that doesn't support it? If so - Would I be better off by just re-(re-)-configuring the array to have just one virtual drive with a separate partition for VMs?

I think it is overcomplicating the setup by using two virtual drives - especially if I STILL cannot use ReFS...

Update:

Could it be that I need the "-Storage" package to get ReFS?!

If so - what happens with licensing? I wanted Nano Hyper-V because I then get the physical Hyper-V server + two virtual 2016 Server on one Standard license. Will I break this by adding the "Storage" package?

Problem Remotely Connecting to VM via Remote Desktop Connection

I have a Windows 7 VM running in Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 R2. Because of the hands on work needed with the HOST i have it set up to access remotely via Remote Desktop Connection. I need to also connect to the VM via RDC at any given moment for testing purposes. However, while i can connect to the HOST via RDC with the correct authenticated login i cannot get RDC to connect to my VM. The server does run Active Domain while my VM is on its own WORKGROUP. The VM is networked to the External NIC of the HOST and has a static IP address that is visible from the router admin page.

I have read and done the Set up Internal Network Interface in Hyper-V, shared the connection from HOST NIC to the Virtual Switch internal interface. Also changed the PORT used for RDC in the VM to 3391 in RegEdit and allowed the port through VM firewall, as well as HOST firewall and fort forwarded the port from router. Also setting the Virtual Server Port to VM IP in router as well.

I try to log into the VM through RDC with 192.168.X.X:3391 w/ username. But no connection is made. Can someone tell me where i am going wrong with this?

Issue with CSV volumes access from another node on Hyper-V 2012 R2

Hi,

We have an Hyper-V infrastructure which is composed of 6 nodes running on Windows 2012 R2 (HP servers with the same materials). 4 "Cluster Shared Volume" have been created, together with a Quorum.

When we assign a CSV to another node, we have no problem, except with the node n°5. In this case, when a CSV is assigned to node n°5, only the node n°5 can see the content of the volume in the Windows Explorer. The other nodes cannot.

From the other nodes, we have this error message :

"C:\ClusterStorage\VolumeXXX is not accessible. Logon failure : the user has not been granted the requested logon at this computer".

We also note that the size of the assigned volume doesn't appear on the other nodes in the Windows Explorer.

What is amazing is that we encountered no issues with the virtual machines.

I have read many forum on the Net. Talking about SMB which could be disabled, but like the storage is connected by Fibre Channel, it doesn't seem to apply to us. Furthermore, the components "Clients for Microsoft Network" and "File and Print Sharing..." are enabled on the network cards dedicated to the cluster.

One last information. The node n°5 has been reinstalled from a Sysprep image, but the problem is still there.

Can you help us ?

Best regards.

Laurent

Upgrading From Server 2008 R2 to Server 2016

Hi All

I have a planned upgrade of a system that is currently running Server 2008 R2 Ent, with four Virtual Servers on hyper-v all running Server 2008 R2, one Domain controller, one exchange server (Exchange 2010), one Sql server with an accounting Package and one sql server with a Autodesk package.

The phase one of the upgrade is to replace the current Server 2008 R2 operating system with Server 2016, its easy enough as the VHDs themselves do not reside on the system partition of the RAIDed data set. and then to get the Hyper-v's running as is, on the server 2016 OS.

The second phase is upgrading the Virtual operating systems to server 2016.

My question is, will this process be simple enough? ie. Reinstall with server 2016 and simply import the virtual machines into the server 2016 hyper-v manager? or is this even possible or not? or are there resources somewhere I can look at. I have googled and come up with nothing relevant.

What are the steps to upgrade a host operating system from Server 2008R2 to Server 2016 and still have the server 2008 R2 virtual machines still boot up on the server 2016?

thank you for your help in advance.

Live migration of virtual machines through admin console is failing

Hi,

We have a setup of four Hyper-V 2016 servers, all fully updated and added to our domain.

The problem we have is that I can´t do live migration between servers through the Microsoft hyper-v console. This is working betweens servers if I´m doing it directly on the server and Powershell with the Move-VM command. I have enabled Live Migration and chosen "Use Kerberos" I have also delegated user rights in the AD, set it to "Use Kerberos only" and added a checked "Expanded."

I have done some testing, and if I remove the delegation and then test the live migration from Powershell on the source host, then it will fail, so the delegation is working.

These servers are on the same network, and I have sync all DC´s.

Hyper-V Guest Memory Demand appears to be wrong

$

I have a hyper-v guest that is displaying an odd behavior.  Both Host and Guest are running 2012 R2 server core.   The guest is a DC/DNS/DHCP/Print server.  Printing is very low volume.  Both host and guest are current on updates, including integration services.

The guest is configured with Dynamic Memory using the following settings:

Startup: 1024
Minimum: 512
Maximum: 6144
Buffer: 20%

The issue is that the Memory Demand reported by the host doesn't reflect the memory current in use on the guest. Here is an example:
Guest Memory Available: 1.6 GB
Guest Memory Usage:1.6GB (100%)
Host Assigned Memory: 1682MB (1.6GB)
Host Memory Demand: 1446MB (1.4GB)

You will note that I have 6GB available to the the guest, which its not using, and a 20% buffer that its not getting.  It appears to me that the Host is behaving correctly because it thinks the guest is at 85 percent utilization (it ticked up to 1.7GB Assigned shortly after this reading).  What I can't figure out is why the host thinks this guest is using less than it is.  What is also interesting is that it seems to scale with increased memory.

Any ideas?

SPLA for migration of physical HyperV to a Cloud server

$

Hello,

We are considering to migrate a physical hypervisor to a hosted server.
We have the information about the mensual fees for th hypervisor itself but, we still need Microsoft licences.
And it seems that SPLA licences are needed.

The Cloud hypervisor has 8cores/16threads.
There will be (about) 20 users, using RDS and MS Office.

1) As we need 3 VM (W2012-R2), how many SPLA licences do we need ?
An which ones (if there are different) ?
What are the P/N of these licences ?

2) Do we need CAL per user ?
If yes, which ones (what is the P/N) ?

3) Do we need RDS CAL per user ?
If yes, which ones (what is the P/N) ?

4) Do we need specific licences for MS Office ?
If yes, which ones (what is the P/N) ?

Thanks in advance for your help
