Hi!
I'm setting up a Nano Server with Hyper-V. And after a lot of back and forth, I'm starting to get close.
It's a standalone system with 6x64GB SSDs in OBR5. This is split into two virtual drives (sliced array AFAIK), one with 16GB and one with the rest (277GB). Nano is installed to the 16GB one, on a 12GB partition together with system and reserved.
I'm now trying to format the second virtual drive, which I created because I wanted ReFS, which cannot be used on the system drive. The original thought was a single virtual drive with a C: partition for Nano Hyper-V, and D: partition for the VMs, instead
of using sliced array, which could create potential problems in the future.
(Some recommend separating with two virtual drives like I've done to separate host from VMs, but it limits the array, as it can no longer be extended, and disaster recovery is complicated).
But as this wasn't possible with ReFS, I redid the array configuration, and do now have a separate virtual drive which I want to use as "D:" with ReFS formatting, which I was recommended with 2016 Hyper-V.
The problem - I'm still not able to format with ReFS!!!
When running:
Format-Volume -Driveletter D -FileSystem ReFS -AllocationUnitSize 65536
I get "Format-Volume : The specified file system is not supported"
WHY?!
Is it Nano that doesn't support it? If so - Would I be better off by just re-(re-)-configuring the array to have just one virtual drive with a separate partition for VMs?
I think it is overcomplicating the setup by using two virtual drives - especially if I STILL cannot use ReFS...
Update:
Could it be that I need the "-Storage" package to get ReFS?!
If so - what happens with licensing? I wanted Nano Hyper-V because I then get the physical Hyper-V server + two virtual 2016 Server on one Standard license. Will I break this by adding the "Storage" package?
