Logon permissions periodically being lost?

$

I am running server 2012,

Hosting a number of virtual machines in the Hyper-v manager

Also managed by System center vmm sp1 (beta)

This seems to be a periodic issue. The simple operation of powering on a virtual machine sometime fails with the following error: "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

Running the command "GPupdate /force" fixes the problem initally, but the error return when there have been no changes to permission in the Domain controller or hyper-v manager. Running the command "GPupdate /force" fixes it from this point again.

There are many other operations that bring up this error message, be for sake of explanation we can stay with the power on scenario.

It is a common error, but I don't believe I have found a solution that matches my case.

Any ideas?

Upgrading Integration Components to Server 2008 R2 SP1

I have a question regarding updating the Integration Components on my host servers. I have multiple standalone host servers that are running Server 2008 R2 SP1 and they are completely updated. After creating my virtual nics, when I go to Device Manager --> Network Adapters --> right click on my virtual switch --> Driver --> I'm at version 6.1.7600.16385. From the articles I've read ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1349.hyper-v-update-list-for-windows-server-2008-r2-en-us.aspx ) I should be at 6.1.7601.17514. My question is how do I go about updating my virtual switches to the latest version? Is the driver already on my system? If so, where would it be on my system so I can browse to the latest file? After the latest version is updated, do I need to stop every VM on the host and push or install Integration services again? Sorry for all the questions but hopefully this post will help others out as well.

I've checked my other Hyper-V host servers that are Server 2008 R2 SP1 which are clustered and they all are at the Server 2008 R2 Inegration Component version level and NOT at the Server 2008 R2 SP1 version level.

VMs Automatically Migrating Back to 1st Host

$

I have 2 hosts running Hyper-V with Failover Cluster Manger and SCVMM 2012.  I have migrated half of the VMs to the 2nd host manually while I try to configure/figure out load balancing and failover with SCOM 2012 using PRO.

I've noticed that the VMs that I manually move to the 2nd host keep migrating back to the 1st host and I'm not sure why.  Any suggestions on what could be causing this?  I haven't set up anything explicitly for load balancing but this seems to be working the opposite of how load balancing would work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Configuring workstations to automatically connect to virtual desktops?

Folks:

We have users on Windows desktops who will be accessing virtual desktops hosted on our on-premises server (Win2012).

I would like to streamline access so that users' computers connect automatically to their virtual desktops instead of having to run RDC.

Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks.

VMs isolation for classroom setup

Hi,

I have one WS2012 server with roles AD, DNS, DHCP and Hyper-V. This server is used just for education purpose with our clean laptops. User scenario is: I create VMs on server and users connect to server. Usually we create VMs with Private network so end-user cannot connect to VMs through RDP and in that case they user Hyper-V console on laptops and direct connection to Hyper-V server and then connect to each VMs. This is my security issue because all users can see all VMs.

I must use private network for VMs and now I'd like to implement solution when user1 can see only his/her VMs on Hyper-V server. Can you please advice how I can setup this?

Thnx.

hyper-v configuration issues

$

Hi,

I have been banging my head with few issues for a while, and I hope to get some help here.

I have 2 hyper-v hosts (windows 2012) in a cluster.

both hosts are connected via iscsi to a storage where all the VMs are.

Each one of the hosts have 2 NICs : 1 for iscsi , 1 for connectivity (management and network to VM) , we don't have a huge requirement to add more NICs as the traffic is not bad.

Here are my issues so far and they might be related:

1- Every week I have one of the 2 nodes fails because it disconnects from the storage for some reason, sometimes it fail back to the second node, and sometimes I have to go and start manually all the VMs.

2- When I start the VMs, it's agonizing how slow is the startup process, (it might take between 15 min to 1 hour for a VM to start). After it starts, and I guess it's because it's slow, the network on the VM takes time to start as well, so any network related service on the VM doesn't start (for example MSSQL doesn't start), so I have to go log in to each VM and start the services that didn't start automatically because the network didn't come up fast enough.

3- I used to have live migration working , but since the last failure, live migration doesn't work anymore, I get an error : Failed to live migrate virtual machine 'machine name' For more data, see 'information Details' , and in information details , I get : The action 'Move' did not complete. Error Code: 0x80070057 , the parameter is incorrect.

4- I also noticed in one host an event ID 1196 showing every 15 minutes,  details are: Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason: The handle is invalid.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Copy files from cluster node to another cluster node on local disks copy over CSV and LM network???

Hi,

Is is normal that files copy from one cluster node local disk to another cluster node local disk transfers over the CSV and LM network and not through the management network?

Love the speed though as the files get copied above the 1gbps speed.

Thanks

Hyper V without shared storage

$

Hi,

We currently use a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper V Cluster. Because we wanted to migrate virtual machines from one node to another, we installed a shared storage box based on iSCSI. One of the new features of Windows 2012 is live migration without the requirement of shared storage. This sounds great because our rack space is very limited. Being able to remove the storage box with it's complexity, great... Only, I noticed from a few other posts, that you still need clustering if you require live migration to happen when one node fails. This is a feature that we rather not like to miss, except if we can work around it with Hyper V Replica for example?

Our current scenario is as follow: the virtual servers are balanced between two nodes on one physical location, when one node fails, we want them to be available on the other node until the other node is available again. Our nodes are provisioned that they can handle the increased load of hosting all virtual servers for a limited time on one node.

Is it a good idea to use Hyper V Replica for this scenario. What will we exactly miss (pro/cons) compared to our current scenario? Are there other disadvantages/advantages or maybe other solutions? The main goal is to get around the shared storage and remove the complexity and cost (rack space/power consumsion).

Thank you.

Netsvc disconnects and reconnects my Hyper V Virtual Machine NIC card

Hyper V OS: Windows 2008 Datacenter

VM in question: Server 2008 R2 SP1

So, I'm having an issue wherein my NIC card on my Virtual Machine is momentarily disconnected, interrupting an important service that must be manually restarted. This happens quite intermittently, weekly or bimonthly, but it is annoying and disruptive. Netsvc is the service, and the message is that the card disconnected, then another netsvc event for the reconnect.

I turned the powercfg.cpl settings on both HyperV host and VM to High Performance mode (a solution I found online) and still have the issue.

The thread "Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter keeps disconnecting" (link withheld due to the settings on this forum) appears to partially describe the issue, but the hotfixes listed by Mr. AlessandroCardoso are not compatible with my Hyper V or VM, so neither are valid (obviously not the 2003 one) in my case.

The hyper V integration tools are installed.

Performance difference 7,2 RPM or 10 RPM disks

$

Hi,

I have done some reading on disk speeds and Hyper-V/VMWare.
This recommendation always seems to come back: The faster the better, and ensure you have enough cache. This is a nice theoretical answer for someone
that doesn’t need to pay the hardware… :-) What is the practical difference in Hyper-V when working with 7,2 K RPM, 10 K RPM or 15 K RPM disks? Are the
systems/applications where you really need this, or is this generally a nice to have? Faster disk speeds means generally smaller sizes and are more expensive...
Is this worth it?

When I did some calculations for the W2008R2 Hyper V platform about 3-4 years ago, Microsoft generally advised 2 virtual servers per core. And memory is the main parameter for provisioning. Is this still valid? Again, I am looking on a practical answer from experience, more than a theoretical one.

Thanks again!

Move Virtual Machine Storage on a Clustered vm = Disk Read Error?

$

Having an issue when moving Virtual Machine Storage on a Clustered vm is breaking (corrupting?) the vhdx.

Setup:

2-node Hyper-V Server 2012 (the free one) Cluster connected to an EqualLogic PS6100E using a CSV.  (2) Teamed (Hyper-V) LAN nics and (3) iSCSI MPIO nics each.

Starting Location:

  • VM named "vv-2012" is built from an ISO and running on a server in the node - NOT added to Failover Cluster Manager as a role yet.
  • Disk lives at "C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\Virtual Hard Disks\vv-2012.vhdx"
  • VM lives at ""C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\Virtual Machines\xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.xml"
  • Machine is Running at Login Screen directly after setting the local Administrator password
  • Running current Integration Services

Test 1 - From Starting Location - Move VM Storage using Hyper-V Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • SUCCESS - vhdx moved and machine still running

Test 2 - From Starting Location - Import into Failover Cluster Manager - Move VM Storage using Failover Cluster Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • FAILED - Disk Read error in the running VM as soon as the move starts (see below image)

Test 3 - From Starting Location - Import into Failover Cluster Manager -SHUT DOWN RUNNING VM - Move VM Storage using Failover Cluster Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • SUCCESS - Started VM - no errors

Working on the, now, broken vhdx:

- Searching technet (and the Internet - Google/Bing) returns almost exclusively P2V conversions using disk2vhd.exe from Sysinternals.  That is NOT the case here - reading these posts talks about partitions not being imported (boot partition) or incorrect IDE/SCSI settings on imported vhd's.

- Attaching the vhdx to another vm (or my local machine using Disk Management) and running chkdsk returns "Corrupt master file table. Windows will attempt to recover master file table from disk."  "Windows cannot recover master file table.  CHKDSK aborted." (also tried with /F even though screenshot does not show that - same result) - I see the 2 partitions (boot and system) but cannot browse them - marked as RAW

- Running TestDisk returns invalid MFT (I think, not an expert on this program).

Summary:

- Moving vm vhdx's that are turned off either through Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Managerwork fine

- Moving vm vhdx's that are running through Hyper-V Managerwork fine

- Moving vm vhdx's that are running through Failover Cluster Managerbreaks (corrupts?) the vhdx.

So my questions are 3 fold:

  1. Can anyone else reproduce this?
  2. Is it a Hyper-V / Cluster bug?
  3. Can I recover the vhdx?

Wasn't sure if I should post here or Cluster forum?  Both?

How to configure DHCP guard in Hyper-V 2012?

$

Hello,

I would like to know how to configure Hyper-V 2012 DHCP guard, and how it works.

In some Microsoft documents, the function is explained like following.
DHCP guard drops server messages from unauthorized virtual machines that are acting as DHCP servers.
DHCP server traffic from other virtual switch ports is automatically dropped.

Q. What does "unauthorized virtual machines" mean?
I could find DHCP guard turn on and off check box in Hyper-V setting, but I couldn't find any other configuration about "authorize".    Is there any configuration to authorize DHCP? As a self-test, I tried to build a DHCP server on a VM, and turn on DHCP guard on other VMs, then IP addresses were delivered to all VMs on the network. I didn't do any authorize procedure for the DHCP server at all. I think this DHCP server should be blocked, but actually not. Could you let me know how to configure and how it works?

# In my self-test, VMs are not on domain.

Restored VMs and .VHDs and Lost Security Settings

I had to restore the virtual machines and the virtual drives from a backup.  Unfortunately, the backup did not have the individual security settings for each VM and VHD.

I cannot start any of the VMs.  The error message is:
[Window Title]
Virtual Machine Connection

[Main Instruction]
The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'VM Windows XP SP3 - VS2008'.

[Content]
'Unnamed VM' failed to initialize.

An attempt to read or update the virtual machine configuration failed because access was denied.

[Expanded Information]
'Unnamed VM' failed to initialize. (Virtual machine 54DB75B6-3BA0-424F-B48C-7FFECC7CE669)

'Unnamed VM' failed to read or update the virtual machine configuration because access was denied: General access denied error (0x80070005). Check the security settings on the folder in which the virtual machine is stored. (Virtual machine 54DB75B6-3BA0-424F-B48C-7FFECC7CE669)

[^] Hide details  [Close]

Each of the pieces of a newly defined VM -- the xml file, the empty directory and the virtual hard drive -- have full control for an object that has the same name as the guid for the virtual machine.  So for the example above there should be a security setting for an object named 54DB75B6-3BA0-424F-B48C-7FFECC7CE669 with full control.  Unfortunately there isn't and there does not appear to be a way to add it as it is not in the list of objects that can be assigned.

Is there a way to repair the security settings?
