Error when creating VHDX via Hyper-V Manager remotely

Hey all!

So, I installed Hyper-V 2012 Core on a box, patched it, and then joined it to the domain. If I connect to the server via Hyper-V Manager from either a Windows 8 machine or Server 2012 machine and try to create a VM, it says "There was an unexpected error in configuring the hard disk on [Insert VM Name Here]." I feel like I've tried everything. I can not create the disk manually via the Manager on its own, before or after the VM being created. I can, however, create the disk via PowerShell with out a problem! Via PowerShell, I can create a dynamic VHDX disk every time without an issue.

I was curious if anyone has had this problem and/or knows a solution.

Thanks in advance!

How to find the checkpoint type (standard or production) through powershell?

In windows 2016 server, from the hyperV manager, for one of the virtual machine a standard checkpoint and a production checkpoint are taken. Get-VMSnapshot displays the snapshot type as standard for both them. How to find the checkpoint type of the virutal machine?

How VSS based backup works in hyperv 2016 for standard checkpoint and production checkpoint?

The checkpoint type of a virtual machine is set to production only. The VSS service inside the virtual machine is set to disabled state. Now from the hyperV Manager if we try to create a checkpoint, it fails. ( expected as VSS service in the guest VM cannot be started).

From a third party backup requestor application(which uses host VSS) a snapshot is triggered. The snapshot creation was successful. The expectation was the snapshot creation would fail. This triggered me a question on VSS based snapshot on windows 2016 for hyperv.

  • Is there any technet page that explains the steps involved in backup process in Windows 2016 for Hyperv? (likehttps://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd405549(v=vs.85).aspx#details_on_the_hyper-v_vss_writer for earlier versions)
  • Does host VSS writer doesnt follow the VM's checkpoint type configuration ?

Hi All

I need to convert Hyperv generation 2 VM's on a Windows 2012 R2 hyperv server so I can export / run them on a Windows 2012 (NOT R2) HyperV server.

Is there anyway as currently they won't boot on a Windows 2012 (non R2) hyperV servers

Thanks

vdisk stuck in compacting state

I have tried to shrink a VHDX dynamic disk using diskpart using the below commands.

Text
select vdisk File=”I:\path\to\your.vhd”
attach vdisk readonly
compact vdisk

It got stuck at 30% so I hit ctrl+C to cancel, but the job is still active.

I run the command

Text
detail vdisk
it shows that the state is "compacting"

I cannot figure out how to cancel the actual compacting job that is running in diskpart.

I can still view all the files on the attached VHDX drive.

Does anyone know?

Server is running Server 2012 R2

Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V Guarded Host Failed Attestation

I am setting up a test lab environment using nested Hyper-V to test shielded VM, meaning the guarded host will be a VM. As my hardware does not have TPM 2.0, my setup is simply based on AD attestation.

But after setting up the guarded host, the status shows that the host is not guarded as Virtual Secure Mode is not detected and that the host is not a physical machine. Is virtual secure mode and physical machine needed to test shielded VM with AD attestation?

Dear

how we can keep uuid with out change when making hyper v replication?

newest version broken: cant start a session on an additional screen only!

Way it used to be:

I used to be able to start a hyper-V-vc on my additional screen (1920x1200).
Advantage: when connecting I could "share" guest drive with vc and benefit from higher res.

Since a while now that doesn't work anymore:

I can still start a session and log on to vc and use it BUT:
it always wants to start on main screen (1920x1080)
If I choose connect I can share my drive D with the vc BUT even if I move the vc to the OTHER screen (1920x1200) the vc WILL NOT PICK UP the high resolution, so I'm stuck with a 1920x1080 res on a 1920x1200 screen.
So either I can share D with vc using lower res OR I can use higher res but CANT share D.

I'm running Win10 with Hypoer-V-Manager 10.0.10586

This didn't use to be an issue.

Can somebody explain how to work around this of just repair it in next version?

Thanks

Change gateway on HyperV replica

Hi,

I have 2 W2012 R2 servers in 2 differents datacenters and those 2 servers doesn't have the same gateway.

When the 1st server is down i can switch to the other, public IPs of the VM are Failover but because of the different gateway i must change each gateway on each VM to make them working.

How can i automate this change of gateway ?

Thank you and excuse me for my bad english.

Hyper-V replication merge fails while hyper-v vm is turned on

Hello,

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Exchange 2013 virtual machine  Gen 2 running on a Windows 2012 R2 Host.  THe VM has the latest patches and integration services installed.   When the VM is on line it replicates but the merge process always fails.   I can't afford to take the machine offline for hours everyday to let the merge process succeed.    I have 4 other VMs that all replicate and merge fine on the same host.

I have over 2TB of free space on the host, about 25% free memory on the VM as well as the host.   There are no backups or antivirus programs locking the VHDx.

I have recovery point set to only the latest recovery point.

I've tried wiping out the VM and just setting up a new one using the same VHD - same results.

I've removed replication and the VM runs fine without replication.

When I set up replication again it has the same issue - it creates a large avhdx file and it won't merge so long as the VM is turned on - merge happens fine once the VM is turned off.

Strangely it says replication health normal.

Hyper-V AVHDX files and Dell AutoSnapshot Manager

I'm running Windows Server 2012 R2 and the guests are on iSCSI targets. Using the Dell AutoSnapshot Manager from the host, AVHDX files are created while the tool coordinates quiesceing the operating system to make an application consistent snapshot on the SAN.  This works great, but sometimes an ADHVX file gets orphaned and are not merged afterward, and I want to know about it immediately.  Is this activity logged somewhere?  I can't seem to find anything.

EDIT:  I think I found it, it's in the HyperV VMMS log, error 19100, but the error is not what I was expecting to find.  I understand calling Dell Tech support is advised, but half the time I seem to know more about the product than they do, and this is obviously leveraging a built in Windows feature, so I thought someone here would know.

Is there a standalone Hyper v Server ?

I have a high spec server I want to setup as a Hyper V VM Server to host a number of VMs for employees. I dont want to purchase the Server 2012/2016 Datacentre as its just far too expenisve. Is there a Hyper-V Standalone out there which is cheaper - Ive had a good luck but cant see anything.

I see theres some talk of a 2016 Hyper V standalone but cant find it anywhere?

Expand disk displays incorrect disk space.

Running Hyper-V. Host and VMs are 2008 R2.

I expanded an almost used up disk from 40 GB to 80 GB. It had 1GB of free space.

Disk Management displays the C partition with 80 GB on the bottom half and 40 GB on the top half. See image. I restarted the machine after noticing this. Still displays the same.

I've expanded disks on other VMs with no issues. Any suggestions?

Greetings.
Basically making a copy of this thread from another resource, but "when I run the setup wizard after "Making Sure you are ready to install" screen the next screen is empty" (c) Mayank

Did anyone else have the same problem? What's the workaround to this issue? I can't afford complete reinstalling here, since I work remotely.

HyperV 2012 Export VM Config ONLY?

$

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know how to just export VM Configuration Only (XML files) from an Bare Mental HyperV 2012 Server? We have backed up the VHD's already and just want to backup the configuration for the VM now? We plan to back it up to a NAS. Do I use a Powershell Command?

Any ideas what is the best and simplest way to do this? We do NOT want to copy the VHD's in this process?

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Failover Cluster Manager Live migration issue

$

Hi,

I've got a Windows Server 2012 R2 Cluster which consists of two hosts. I'm trying to live migrate everything from the second host onto the first host however nothing will live migrate unless it is switched off / offline.

I've tried live migrating from Failover Cluster manager and from within VMM and both times I get the same error messages.

The error message from Failover Cluster Manager is here -

'Live migration of 'ServerName' failed.
Virtual machine migration operation for 'ServerName' failed at migration source 'Host2'. (Virtual machine ID 8AC47475-F7BA-400F-A2B5-ZZZZZZZZ)

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'Host1': No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. (0x8007274D).

The following error messages are in the Windows Events logs -

"The Virtual Machine Management Service disabled the listener for Virtual Machine migration connections."

"Failed to set the migration networks at the VMMS: Unspecified error (0x80004005)."

I've rebooted Host1 to see if that would help and it hasn't. I've also run the Cluster Validation Wizard to try and see if this would highlight any problems but again it hasn't shown anything up.

I've done a lot of googling into these error messages and the only possible solution I can seem to find is the following -

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2853203

This link fits the error and fix but not all of the symptoms or product version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Processor incompatibility when live migrating from 2012 R2 to 2016

$

Hi,

I'm testing cluster upgrade from Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 to 2016. I evicted first node, clean-instaled 2016 and joined it back. Everything seems to work fine, except live migration. I cannot perform the migration from a 2012 R2 host to the new 2016 host because I'm getting processor incompatibility error. I don't have compatibility enabled on my VMs because the hardware is 1:1 the same, especially processors are the same (exactly the same model). Live migrations used to work just fine between 2012 R2 nodes.

Am I missing something? What can I check?

Thanks!

I have VM (win2k16) running on Hyper-V host win 2K12 R2. I tried to enable Hyper-V in this VM, when reached the "Add features...", I get the following message

The host is running the HYper-V with no issues. Am I missing any configuration?

Thanks in advance

It is impossible to inplace upgrade Hyper-V-Core 2012 R2 to 2016

$

-see title-

Steps to reproduce:

-install hyper-v-core server 2012 R2 (no need to patch it afterwards as it makes no difference)

-logon, start setup of 2016 hyper-v-core server

Setup will offer to inplace upgrade and keep data and settings.

Expected behavior: just that.

Actual behavior: setup stalls with a clear blue window and the log files setupact.log and setuperr.log indicate no activity anymore, for hours. The last line in the activity log is

Info: MOUPG Compatibility Starting Wait

Please feel free to reproduce it. It happens on any hardware, even on a (nested) virtual machine.
