Server 2016 and Windows Updates

I am deploying a new Hyper-V server running Server 2016.  I can't seem to control Windows Updates any more than setting a 12 hour window where the server is most active.  Is there a way to only up date manually?

Hyper V VM export stuck

I have generation 2 Hyper-V VM (windows server 2012 r2 client and host). I'm trying to export it to location. While exporting it's status is running, but I can't connect it using rdp or http. It stucks. When I cancel export it resumes. Status is always running (no paused or saved). All updates are installed.

Don't have any issue on centos  located on that host.

The process has not been granted access rights to the parent virtual hard disk

While restoring VMs I receive the following error in event logs:

The chain of virtual hard disks is inaccessible. The process has not been granted access rights to the parent virtual hard disk for the differencing disk.

I am the admin. The machines are messed up. Of course they had checkpoints and of course it was a bad idea (from today's perspective). Now when restoring them I feel like catching all Pokemons from the MSDN error codes list. Please advise how to proceed with this particular one.

Pass-Through vs VHDx as a second drive in VM.

We are planning the install of a shiny new server.

Two SSDs for host OS and six HDDs for storage. We have them set up to run in pairs and in a hardware RAID1 mirror for each pair. We plan to run Hyper-V machines for various functions.

One of the functions is two file servers for separate groups. The basic plan was one of the 1TB pairs be the VHDx hosts for the primary drives and in all VMs. Then the two additional 1TB pairs be set up as pass-through drives on 2 VMs.
So the host only has the SSDs and the 1 drive hosting the VHDs online.
Two VMs have a 60GB VHD as their OS drive (hosted on the drive above) and then have an additional 1TB pass-through drive for storing user file data.

Recently I've read a fair bit of information that says this is an old method because of speed overheads but VHDx resolves those. References to VSS Backups not possible from the host and the VM not being portable/replicable have been the biggest arguments against the use of a pass-through.

On the backups - The VM would have to do the backups anyway with a VHDx because the host only sees a VHDx, single file. Incremental nightly backups would attempt to backup the entire VHDx, at 600GB... This doesn't seem like a good idea.

On the portability - If something catastrophic happened, wouldn't it be faster to simply create a new VM (or restore from a previous backup or replica) and then just reattach the physical HDD again? Or moving the physical drive to another server (What server doesn't have hot-swap in the modern day) and recover from there. If a VHDx goes bad for whatever reason, it would be replicated over the RAID and you run the risk of losing everything.

I'm not saying I'm against going to VHDx running on the host machine attached to the VM, but I just want to make sure I am making the right choice with all the information.

What should I be considering when planning our server deployment?

Remote Management Failed From Win-10

Hi!

I am still getting the attached message while trying to connect to a Windows 2012 Hyper-V Server from my Windows 10 Pro Machine (10.0.14393 N/A Build 14393).

Any Solution?

Hyper-V Full screen mode

I've been playing around with using virtual machines recently and am trying out Hyper-V as the native virtual manager in windows.  Is there any way to make the full screen mode actually be full screen instead of just a big black border around the window?

Hi, got a 2008 r2 vm machine running on a 2008 std server w/hyper-v, it worked fine for years, but last week show this symptom black screen after boot up and when I press ctrl-alt-del shows a blank login screen. I could browse the files, can ping but can’t do rdc or use any app installed. Check all the forum and try all possible solution they said with negative results. Any suggestion or advice would be appreciated.

thanks

Replica between Server 2012 (non-R2) and Server 2016

Hi guys,

I'm kind of in a pinch here so any help would be appreciated.

So, my company is helping set up Hyper-V Replica for a client for their new DR site. The thing is their production/primary servers are running Server 2012 (not R2) but the servers on the DR site might come with Server 2016.

I know replication can't be done from 2012 R2 back to 2012 so I'm assuming replication is also not going to work from 2016 to 2012. Am I right to assume this?

I did read that when you import/move a VM from 2012 R2 to 2016, it will not be automatically updated so you can move it back to 2012 R2, but again, our client is using the non-R2 2012. So my question is, does this also apply to 2012?

Thanks in advance.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'VMNAME' failed at migration source

2 node Server 2012 R2 Cluster
~40 VMs on cluster

Trying to live migrate VM from CLUSTER-NODE1 TO NODE2

Tried both VMM and Failover cluster manager.

VMM gives this error
Error (10698)
The virtual machine could not be live migrated to the virtual machine host using this cluster configuration.

Recommended Action
Check the cluster configuration and then try the operation again.

I have migrated this machine before between the nodes and I can still migrate the other 39 machines between nodes. I have rebooted this VM, but no change. No checkpoints on the VM.

In my search for an answer, it seems that the error message is incomplete. I have found other posts with the error "Virtual machine migration operation for 'VMNAME' failed at migration source" but they always have an additional piece of the message, like authentication failure etc. This error does not give any indication of the cause.

Hyper-V Virtual Machine Reserve 100 percent

In Hyper-V there is an option called Virtual Machine Reserve (percentage). When I set the value at 100 percent for one Virtual Machine,  while all CPU Cores of the server (hardware) are allocated to this Virtual Machine and the Virtual Machine limit (percentage) is also having the 100% value,  what will be the impact on the other Virtual Machines which are running on the same Hyper-V host?TheVirtual Machine Reserve (percentage) on the other Virtual Machines is set to 0 with the Virtual Machine limit (percentage) set to 100.

Hyper-V Core 2016 licensing

I've installed Hyper-V Core 2016. When I RDP into the machine I get a warning message "Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured - Remote Desktop Services might stop working in 120 days". I never got this message on Hyper-V Core 2012 R2.

So is Hyper-V Core 2016 still free like 2012 was? If so how can I fix this licensing mode?

Performance - Dual Boot to VM running Server and running multiple Hyper-V VMs on that server?

$

You'll understand why I'm posting this to Hyper-V instead of Windows Server 2012 R2 Installation category as you read the post.

Introduction & Purpose:
I want the capability to dual-boot to either Windows 10 Pro or Windows Server 2012 R2. I want to create various labs using Hyper-V running on Windows Server 2012 R2. (I realize that I can create and run Hyper-V VMs from within Windows 10 Pro but I want to run them under Windows Server 2012 R2.) The labs will include small networks consisting of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and perhaps a Linux OS. The servers roles will include ADDS, DNS, DHCP and other common server roles. I plan on using these labs for learning purposes with a focus on learning how to upgrade, configure and administer Windows server and client operating systems and improving my PowerShell skills.

MEMORY (RAM): 32GB

STORAGE
I have the following storage available:

  1. 500GB Western Digital Black SATA disk drive with 310GB free space. (Used for Windows 10 OS and Apps)
  2. 1TB Western Digital Black SATA disk drives, 3 of which are new and unused and the 4th drive has 391GB free space.
  3. 2TB Western Digital Black SATA disk drives which is new and unused.
  4. (OS resides on disk C:) or I can boot to a Windows Server 2012 R2 VHD (which is installed to boot from VHD).

I am considering the following options for the dual-boot setup: (Windows 10 Pro is already installed.)

  1. Create a 2nd (3rd really) partition on my existing C: drive and install Windows Server 2012 in that partition.
  2. Install Windows Server 2012 R2 as a VHD(x) and configure the system to boot to the VHD when I select the Server 2012 R2 boot option.

My concern with Option 2 is this: Will the Hyper-V VMs that I create in the virtualized instance of Windows Server 2012 R2 (Option 2) perform as well as Hyper-V VMs that I create in the non-virtualized Windows Server 2012 R2 installation (Option 1)?

My knowledge of Hyper-V and virtualization in general is very limited. But doesn't Option 2 create conditions in which "a hypervisor is using another hypervisor" which will result in sub-optimal performance?

I truly hope my post makes sense. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I seek assistance because my goal is to set the environment up right the first time and obtain the best performance possible given my hardware.

Dear All,

I have an issue with Veaam replication on windows 2012 HyperV cluster. The issue is that CSV space usage is filling up every time replication that occurs. On Veeam forums they sugest the following updates to fix this issue. But these updates are available only for 2012 R2 and not for 2012, where can i find these updates for 2012?

Hyper-V VM Generation 2 - How to boot from .ISO

$

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Kenny

Can't Install Windows 10 1607 virtual machine Guest on Server 2008 R2 Host

Trying to install the new Windows 10 1607 Enterprise OS as a virtual Machine using Hyper V on a Server 2008 R2 Host.

When I start the installer I get the Windows logo for 5 seconds.

Then the screen goes blank / black.

I would usually expect to see the Windows Installer options to select the Installation Language, Region and Keyboard settings. But I just see a black screen.

I get the following errors in the event viewer. Application and Services Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Hyper-V-Worker -> Admin

Event ID: 23014

Device 'Microsoft Synthetic Display Controller' in 'TESTWINDOWS10' is loaded but has a different version from the server. Server version 3.0 Client version 3.5 (Virtual machine ID 6C2F809F-69A0-4FED-A099-B1F64C57AD79). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

Event ID: 12540

'TESTWINDOWS10' (Device 'Microsoft Synthetic Display Controller'): a unrecoverable internal error has occurred. (Virtual machine ID 6C2F809F-69A0-4FED-A099-B1F64C57AD79)

Anybody know how to fix this?

I have lodged a case with Microsoft Support.

Anybody else have this issue?

To Jumbo Frame or not to Jumbo Frame - That the question..

Hi everyone,

Currently on Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers.

Network infrastructure switches and NIC is all on the SAN and LAN configured to handle Jumbo Frames.

on the management, SAN and Live Migration Network in Hyper-V we have configured Jumbo Frames. I can test with "ping -l 8960 -f IP" and see that I get ping reply.

Currently the VM switch is also configured to Jumbo Frames. I'm 100% sure that 99% of all the Guest VM's which normally is Windows OS is not configured to handle Jumbo Frames. What is best practice to do?

If Jumbo Frames is configured all Places on Hyper-V host and Guest OS, will it make performance worse if it is a Remote Desktop servers which internally LAN communication can use Jumbo Frames, but when "talking" to the Default Gateway always need to use 1500 bytes packets..

Live Migration Network Drop

$

I'm running a Hyper-V cluster(2016 TP5) and my Microsoft VMs are reporting event ID 14, task category 1003.  Event text is "Miniport NIC 'Microsoft Hyper-V Network Adapter' network has changed."  This is logged in the VM every time I live migrate to a different Hyper-V host.  I'm RDP'ed in to the VM when it live migrates, and I don't lose my connection.  However, some of my apps are very sensitive and lose their connection during the live migration.  So, I have two questions.

1) Is this event normal for a live migration?  It's only informational, so I'm assuming it's normal.

2) Is anyone running any type of sensitive app(database or live stream of data) and seeing an impact to their applications from this?  I have had to turn off Dynamic Optimization because of the hit the apps will take.

EDIT: It looks like one missed ping is expected based on this thread.  Frustrating, but seems like this is expected behavior and "you should just write better apps".

Guest VLAN anomoly some tagged guests work, and some do not

We have a strange situation with guest vms. The setup is a standard 2 node Hyper-v failover cluster with a 4 10Gb NIC team per host. After successfully building two server 2012R2 guests and assigning the vNic to the appropriate VLAN using the hyper-v machine nic option settings and connecting it to the vSwitch all was well.  The machine can connect to the untagged "native" management vlan and any other tagged vlan we have created on the physical switch and communicate with all internal machines on any of those vlans and the internet when we change the network settings accordingly in the guest settings and network connections.  We had two such guests working for several days without issue and then one of them lost the ability to communicate on any vlan other than the untagged management vlan literally overnight.  Any new machines built from scratch now have the same problem.  When checking Get-VMNetworkAdapter -all and Get-VMNetworkAdapterVlan all machines report okay and are properly assigned.  The mac addresses of the machines do not show up in arp cache on the switch or firewall unless they are in the native vlan.  However, one of the original guests still works fine no matter what vlan and ip assignment we give it or what node it is on.  All other aspects of networking remain fine, live migration, cluster and internet traffic etc.  The new guest machines are patched to exact same level as the previous guest that still works fine and all settings are identical between the guests including VMQ, tcp offloading etc.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hyper-V host network cards change & re-config

I need to replace network cards in Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts

Any easy way to carry on the config? Or do I need to remove it & done it again from scratch?

Setup was originally done pretty much like that:
