HyperV remote management

$

Hello,

I can't connect to hyper-v server core via Windows 10 remote console.

The hyper server is not inside the domain because the AD server is a VM inside that server.

So is it possible to connect a domain client computer to hyperv server core with the hyper-v console ?

I' ve got winrm errors.

Thanks.

SYSTEM PID 4 is relentlessly reading VHD files for VMs that are not even powered on

I've got a bit of a quandary here.  We have several VMs that were powered off about 2 weeks ago.  Despite no access being requested, the SYSTEM process is performing large amounts of read activity on the VHD files.  Image name is "System, PID is 4, which corresponds to the PID of the hypervisor.

The host is Server 2012 R2 Datacentre edition.  We have a 2-node HA cluster and the VHDs reside in ClusterStorage (SAN) as usual.  The Failover Cluster Manager still shows the VM role defined.  Removing the role from FCM did not seem to have any effect.  We do NOT have Replication enabled on any nodes.

2 Questions:

1) How do I tell what is constantly reading these files?

2) How do I make it stop?  The high read activity is impacting my cluster performance.

VM proc utilisation display

Hi,

quick question...

I am running Windows 7 update (VM).

In Hyper-V manager CPU Usage shows 23-24% but in VM itself Proc stays on 99-100%.

I know that Windows update for W7 becomes a "very special" task and will be more interesting from October patch Tu...

The question is about discrepancy in HV Manager and VM processor utilization Display...

Any explanation?

GPU Pass-through in the Works for Hyper-V? GRID Tech wanted!

A plea or question - call it what you will. PLEASE, GPU Pass-through for Hyper-V! Is it in the works for future versions of Hyper-V? Has there been any more collaboration with NVIDIA on GRID tech? It seem like Citrix and VMWARE are stealing all of NVIDIA's attention.

RemoteFX is an improvement over no VGPU, but needs the GPU pass-through. After implementing RDS 2012R2 with VMM 2012 R2 for Iowa State University, I am having to begin development on XenServer for GPU Pass-through / GRID enabled virtual desktops and miss VMM already. I'd even settle for a new VMM plugin for XenServer since development seems to have ended.

Thanks,

Damien

Hyper-V - Guest Server DHPC

We have a Hyper-V host in a branch office to replace our existing VMWare Host.  We have created a Domain Controller Guest on the Hyper-V host and it is funtioning fine (it is talking to the DC on VMWare).  When we tried to enable the DHCP server on the Hyper-V DC we do not get any lease requests from laptops or desktops outside of the Hyper-V host.  We buit a Guest Server on the Hyper-V host and set it to DHCP and it works, grabs a lease.

The Hyper-V host is sitting on a Cisco UCS server, we are checking those setting also.

DHCP Upguard is not enabled on the Hyper-V Guest NIC

Are we missing anything in the Hyper-V host that will block DHCP requests?

Is it possible to display dual monitor VM on a subset of the monitors of the system that is used to connect to the VM ??

I am trying to configure a 911 dispatch console.  The dispatchers have one main application that they dispatch from and a bunch of peripheral applications that they use for support (think outlook, internet etc...).  We have had several instances where the peripheral applications have caused problems with the CAD (computer aided dispatch) software.  To prevent this, I am wanting to install a hyper-v virtual machine on the Windows 10 computer that is running the CAD software.  I will then load all the peripheral applications onto the virtual machine.

In order for the dispatchers to quickly see the information that they need, we have 6 displays connected to the physical computer via 2 NVidea NVS 510 video cards (3 monitors attached to each video card) which each contain 2GB of RAM..  We would like to have the virtual machine come up on two of those 6 and leave the other 4 for the CAD software.  However, I can run the virtual computer on all 6 monitors or only on 1, but not a subset of the 6.

I have added the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter to the virtual machine and configured it with a maximum number of monitors = 2, set the max resolution to match the resolution of the monitors the VM will be displayed on and maxed out the memory.  When I attach to this VM with more than 2 monitors attached to the system I remotely connecting from, only one monitor comes up.  If I change the minimum number of monitors to the number of monitors attached to the computer I am remotely connecting from (6), the virtual machine comes up on all the displays as expected; however, this will not work as the dispatchers need to quickly see information on both the CAD software and the peripheral applications (VM system).

Can anyone confirm for me that this is a limitation of RDP/Hyper-V or if I have something configured incorrectly?  In other words, has anyone been successful in using RDP or another software (if so what) to connect to a virtual machine using a subset of the number of monitors on the system being used to access the VM?

As a side note, I have been testing with VirtualBox and I have been successful in getting this configuration to work but I would prefer to use Hyper-V for multiple reasons.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!/responses!

Problem with smb copy

I have two virtual server on Hyper-V. On this server I have installed Windows Server 2012 Data Center. MTU on server have default value. Servers location is on different server farm. Link between server is 100Mbps. When I want copy some file, this copy takes too long. For example, if I want to copy 450GB, this copy takes around 5 days. Except this, problem is also that I have peak when coping runs. For example, very often copy speed is 0 bytes/s. This is picture for this example:

But when I copy from another server, but in same network, copy speed is ok. Problem exist only on server that i wrote.

Can you tell me, what do you think, what could be the problem?

How do I restore a Hyper-V VM without network configuration

I recently switched from Windows 10 RS1 to RS2 and tried to re-import my old Hyper-V Virtual Machines. When I try that, I get the following error:

Analyzing the issue in detail in PowerShell reveals the following:

PS C:\VM> $result = Compare-VM -Path '.\Virtual Machines\8B4D7FA2-88DF-401D-B5BD-411272007624.vmcx'
PS C:\VM> $result.Incompatibilities

So, apparently, there's something invaild in the network configuration.

The thing is: I could not care less about the network configuration! I'll gladly recreate the network configuration as soon as the VM is imported. But Hyper-V won't let me.

Can I somehow remove the faulty network configuration from the vmcx file to make the import succeed?

Thanks, best regards

Hyper-V referenced disk copies whole content of parent disk even if files not modified

We have noticed that a referenced drive associated with a VM that was started but the user never logged in ended up having the reference disk grow to the size of the parent disk.

This is actually happening for all of our referenced drives as time goes one.

Because the parent is 120GB of information, this behavior is eating away our disk space.

Am I wrong to expect that the differencing drive would only contain the modified portions of the parent disk plus any additions, thereby minimizing overall disk usage?

After upgarde to Win 10 - Hyber-V was missing. Added it back- What is next? Import of old files give access error.

As the title says,

I upgraded to Win 10 anniversary. Seems upgrade removes Hyper-V (a bug?). So I added it back again.

Now I am trying to import my old image and nothing works. I pick the folder and once pressing "next" I get an error saying it cannot find the folder, check permission to the file.

I have no problem to the file.

Anyone can point me to step by step procedure - Not sure what I am doing wrong. Import wizard supposed to be as simple as "point to the file" ...

virtual machuine cannot ping its Hyper-V host

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster of three nodes, each node is configured with below NICs:

1. Management (remote access only)

2. VMs-Connectivity

2. Heartbeat

3. Live Migration

each VM cannot ping or reach the Hyper-V host in which it is placed while it can ping it or reach it if you live migrate it to another host. VMs connectivity to domain and network is fine. The issue is not related to a certain Hyper-V host or VM, I mean if for instance VM01 is hosted on HV01, it cannot ping it nor reach it but if you move it to HV02 then it can ping HV01 ...How can we troubleshoot this? The option to validate the cluster is not possible as we have 74 VMs running on this cluster and all are production VMs.

Note: We have Vlan tagging configured on the team interface for the management NIC and in each VM vNIC configuration.

Also Windows firewall and network discovery on Hyper-V hosts are off

Convert .VHDX to .VHD and Gen2 to Gen1

$

Hello,

I have a few virtual machines running in hyper-v.   They were created as Gen 2 VM's with .VHDX drives.  I need to convert these disks to .VHD so that they can be uploaded to Azure.  It is easy enough to edit the disk in Hyper-V Manager and convert it to .VHD but when I do I encounter two problems.

1) I cannot use the .VHD in the existing virtual machine - I believe this has to do with Gen 2 machines only being able to use .VHDX.  Not a big deal - I can recreate the machine as a Gen 1...

2) When the machine is recreated as a Gen 1 and the .VHD is attached the VM cannot boot.  I am guessing that this has something to do with either partitioning or Secure Boot.

Can anyone assist with the steps that need to be done either before converting the VHDX or afterwards so that I can correct the boot issue ?

Thank you,

Matt

Performance - Dual Boot to VM running Server and running multiple Hyper-V VMs on that server?

$

You'll understand why I'm posting this to Hyper-V instead of Windows Server 2012 R2 Installation category as you read the post.

Introduction & Purpose:
I want the capability to dual-boot to either Windows 10 Pro or Windows Server 2012 R2. I want to create various labs using Hyper-V running on Windows Server 2012 R2. (I realize that I can create and run Hyper-V VMs from within Windows 10 Pro but I want to run them under Windows Server 2012 R2.) The labs will include small networks consisting of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and perhaps a Linux OS. The servers roles will include ADDS, DNS, DHCP and other common server roles. I plan on using these labs for learning purposes with a focus on learning how to upgrade, configure and administer Windows server and client operating systems and improving my PowerShell skills.

MEMORY (RAM): 32GB

STORAGE
I have the following storage available:

  1. 500GB Western Digital Black SATA disk drive with 310GB free space. (Used for Windows 10 OS and Apps)
  2. 1TB Western Digital Black SATA disk drives, 3 of which are new and unused and the 4th drive has 391GB free space.
  3. 2TB Western Digital Black SATA disk drives which is new and unused.
  4. (OS resides on disk C:) or I can boot to a Windows Server 2012 R2 VHD (which is installed to boot from VHD).

I am considering the following options for the dual-boot setup: (Windows 10 Pro is already installed.)

  1. Create a 2nd (3rd really) partition on my existing C: drive and install Windows Server 2012 in that partition.
  2. Install Windows Server 2012 R2 as a VHD(x) and configure the system to boot to the VHD when I select the Server 2012 R2 boot option.

My concern with Option 2 is this: Will the Hyper-V VMs that I create in the virtualized instance of Windows Server 2012 R2 (Option 2) perform as well as Hyper-V VMs that I create in the non-virtualized Windows Server 2012 R2 installation (Option 1)?

My knowledge of Hyper-V and virtualization in general is very limited. But doesn't Option 2 create conditions in which "a hypervisor is using another hypervisor" which will result in sub-optimal performance?

I truly hope my post makes sense. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I seek assistance because my goal is to set the environment up right the first time and obtain the best performance possible given my hardware.

Please explain vm guest memory

$

Hi

I've a Windows 10 laptop with hypervisor enabled.

One of the VMs I've assigned 16 GB start up ram and minimum 6 GB, maximum 20 GB dynamic ram.

While on the hosts it shows almost 16 GB in use while I'm doing some tests. But in hyper-v manager it only shows that little more than 6 GB assigned memory.

I'm attaching a screenshot from my laptop.

Why does it shows 16 GB ram in use on the VM guest but only 6+ GB is assigned acording to Hyper-V manager.

The laptop have 32 GB ram and Windows 10 1607.

Hyper V Containers

$

So i am trying to understand containers in server 2016 (tp). The articles i have read talk about "applications" running in the container. Server OS could be an "application" and hyper-v could be an "application". We are a services company and offer some services to clients (like system monitoring). What really interests me is the isolation but i am thinking in the realm of malware/hacks. If a VM running in a container gets hacked or infected with malware that spreads to the network and other PC's/servers/VM's then running in a container will prevent the spread? I'm trying to decide if VM/OS containers will benefit our business.

Add "virtual ethernet adapter" to host

Greetings,

Is it possible to do in Hyper-V same thing as in VMware Workstation: create/add virtual ethernet adapter to host OS (and connect whole virtual network to it)?

Why do I need this? -- I want to connect to guest OS from the "outside" -- through physical adapter.

Best regards...
