Configure VM using a seperate NIC on the Hyper-V Host to acess the Outside Public IP Space . The firewall in place is a Cisco ASA 5505 which I have access to as well. I already have the Virtual Switch configured using it's own physical NIC on the MS server 2012 machine,. however am stick at this point.

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

0
0

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Virtual Machines monitoring

Hi,

I have around 200 virtual machines running different applications. Is there any way to find out which virtual machines have not been used for particular time so that we can remove them from the environment.

Need to preserve KB2861935 IC's...decline June 2016 WS2012 Rollup?

WS2012 HV host, WS2012 guests, 2 of which are Remote Desktop Session Hosts with User Profile Disks enabled.

RDSH's with UPD's require hotfix https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2861935, which excludes UPD mount points when enumerating devices for backup. Without that hotfix, backups of these guests have errors.

This hotfix was not included in the new Integration Components installed with the June 2016 Rollup,https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161609.

If I save a copy of the VMGUEST.ISO that's patched with KB2861935 for use with future RDSH's, can I install the rollup and the new IC on the other VMs, but leave the RDSH's at the KB2861935 version? Or does everything need to match across the host and all guests?

Remote Desktop Virtualization Host setup for multi-tenant hosting scenario

Hi,

(Would like to cross post this to RD forum, but perhaps better suited here?)

We're currently prototyping up a multi-tenant (note!) whole desktop (VDI) hosting infrastructure using a domain joined cluster of Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 machines. We have established test Win7 VDI pools that are hosted on the Hyper-V clusters (running as Virtualization Hosts). Forefront TMG front ends the infrastructure at the edge, and the current architecture contemplates assigning each tenant a discrete VLAN and domain with optional Exchange Server, SharePoint, etc.

The issue we've up against involves the following: since it is necessary to domain join the Hyper-V Virtualization Host servers to the same (tenant 'owned') domain as the pooled desktops, the server with the RD Connection Broker role installed, etc, how can we effectively share the Hyper-V cluster among several tenants? In other words, the current RD VDI architecture appears to necessitate dedicated Hyper-V clusters on a per domain basis. It's worth noting that this is not an issue with session virtualization (the RDH role), since there is no explicit relationship between the RD Host server and the underlying Hyper-V host in this case.

Am I missing something, here, or are these limitations real and unavoidable?

Please let me know if further clarification is required, and I look forward to your replies.

Thanks,

Andrew

VNC on a Hyper-V VM

Hello,

I want to know if is it possibile to access on a VM running by Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 R2 using VNC client instead of RDP client.

The reason is because on this VM client (Windows 7 Prof. or higher, it's same) we need to install Check Point VPN-1 SecureClient to connect remotely on other PC client: the problem is that when we are connected, the secure profile, disconnect all active VM network connection. Now we use this VM client on VMWare server and want to migrate (or recreate, it's same) to Hyper-V Manager on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Thanks in advance,

Fabio

Hyper V Backup Via DPM on Server 2012 R2

Hello,

I'm having an issue when trying to backup to tape a Hyper-V guest VM residing on a Server 2012 R2 host by using DPM 2010 running on a Windows Server 2012( not R2) host. I am able to install the agent on the Hyper-V host server but when trying to add it to a protection group DPM displays "Offline\Hyper-V Name." When the backup runs it fails and gives no specifics. As far as I can tell, no event errors are created on the Hyper-V server or either of the host servers. The SCSI controller is set up in the guest VM and the Backup volume checkpoint is enabled.

If I install an agent on the guest VM itself instead of on the host server I can backup with no issues.

Does anyone have any idea why DPM reads the Hyper-V as "Offline\Hyper-V Name" or why I can not backup from the DPM agent installed on the host server?

We have both standard and enterprise DPM licenses available.

Any help is appreciated!

Visual Studio Emulators for Android doesn't work on Windows 10

Hi,

When I try to start emulator the start task fails, with message like below.

10.08.2015 14:06:01: [Critical] Unable to add user to the Hyper-V Administrators group. Exit code 2220.

I was using it on Windows 8.1 where it worked well on the same PC. This proves that my PC meets all requirements and it is properly configured. After clean install of Windows 10 emulator doesn't work.

Hyper-V on my PC is running well. I can create and run 32 and 64 bit vm's. There is problem with creating android vm's by vs emulator. There is no group "Hyper-V Administrators" and it can't be created.

Tried these solutions:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/09/28/creating-a-hyper-v-administrators-local-group-through-powershell.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/01/17/allowing-non-administrators-to-control-hyper-v.aspx

also i tried to recreate InitialStore.xml for Hyper-V with needed group and operations but without success. It seems that hyper-v bundled with windows 10 doesn't require any special group to run, create, manage and remove vm's, switches, etc. Emulator thinks different and it can't assign me to group which does not exists.

I want to create a lab to test out multi site environment on Hyper-V.

I need to create different subnents (from different classes if possible) and connect them to test out multi site AD replication on a single Hyper-V server.

But I'm not sure how to achieve this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Virtual Machine was reset because an unrecoverable error occurred on a virtual processor that caused a triple fault

I'm getting an error on a 2008R2 Hyper V host that has 2 guests. One server will start without any problems, but after this server restarts, the other guest will get stuck in a loop of starting...running...stopping.

I checked the event viewer and am getting the message 'New Virtual Machine' was reset because an unrecoverable error occurred on a virtual processor that caused a triple fault. If the problem persists, contact Product Support. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx)

This server is a Dell T410.

I've researched this and saw that some people have had this problem with OMSA and BIOS on some Dell servers where the Power Management setting is changed to Maximum Performance and this resolves this particular problem for them. This however has not worked for me.

The only solution for me is to restore the OS vhd from backup from several days prior. This solution is obviously not ideal however.

This problem has happened 2x so far. I'm currently making a restore of the OS vhd for quick recovery next time but don't know what else could be the problem.

There are no reported errors with hardware on this server either.

2012 host, 2012R2 guest: How to upgrade Integration Components?

0

WS2012 HV host, WS2012R2 guest. Have installed KB3161609 v2, including its new VMGUEST.ISO.

I can install the new ICs on the 2012 guests, but on 2012R2, I get "This computer is already running the current version of integration services  (version 6.3.9600.16384)."

Am I supposed to upgrade the IC on 2012R2 guests of a 2012 host? If so, how?

TIA

Virtual machines lose network connectivity when you use Broadcom NetXtreme 1-gigabit network adapters

We have the problem described here:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2986895

Just a quick question:  do I disable VM queues on the physical adapter or on the team, or both.  We are using 2012 R2 built-in NIC teaming.

And do I need to turn VM queues off within the VM settings too?

Oh, I assume I only need to do this for the NICs/teams that are used for Hyper-V virtual switches?

Thanks

No Network Found Error; Unable to Select Host Machine

Hi All, I recently had a brain-collapse moment :-( and installed Hyper-V Server on my Windows 10 laptop, ugh . . . instead of installing programs/features.  And now, when I boot my laptop all I can get to in Hyper-V, which opens up a command prompt with an error message saying "No network adapter found . . . .".  I went into my BIOS and tried to change my Boot sequence, and see what else I could do to reset my OS and nothing helped.  Is my Host OS still there and how do I connect to it?  I'm hoping I haven't lost everything.  I'm thinking I probably need to uninstall Hyper-V Server using a command line script, right? And will I be able to recover my original OS on my Host?  Thank!

Deploying Hyper V Replication in remote site with different network segment

Hi everyone,

Curious about something.

I am familiar with Hyper V replication in 2012.

I currently have it set up to replication some VMs to different servers on my LAN.

What I would like to do is replicate these VMs to our remote site for disaster recovery situations.

My network runs on 192.xxx and the remote site is a 10.1.xxx.xxx network. Both networks are in the same domain.

What can I do to use the remote site as disaster recovery site, but be able to bring up the server and connect to it, even though it is on a different segment?

Dear Server Expert,

I am currently using Windows Server 2012 Standard for my physical server hypervisor. I have one VM built running Windows Server 2008 R2. Currently, I will need to install the USB monitoring device (something like 3G Modem) and this must be accessed by the WhatsupGold Software inside the VM. how to allow the VM to be able to use the USB device attached to the Hypervisor?

Thanks so much.

Low Internet Performance with 400MB Internet Speed - Hyper-v, VMQ, RSS, PRAS Nating

0

Hallo everyone,

In the last couple of weeks we bought a new Internet Cable with 400MB/s and we are facing a problem while downloading anything from the internet or from our FTP Server.

Here are the full used Settings:

0) VM is being used as Default Gateway by using PRAS for Nating.

1) The VM is WS2012R2 , while the Host is Hyper-v 2012 r2

2) The Modem is connected directly to the VM with a static IP from the ISP.

3) 2 Network adapters are didicated for the VM. The 1st is for Public Internet with static public IP ( connected to the Modem) and the 2nd is forPrivate local network (connected to our Network).

4) Network Card is Intel I350-T4  1 GB (VMQ supported and DMA Supported).

The problem is when I connect the modem directly to a client, the downlaod speed will be high 25 to 30 MB/s (depending on the website). While when I using our Gateway with the above settings the speed will drop gradually to 2 MB/s and will stay at this speed.

I have tried to work a little bit with VMQ and RSS but no results. Here is what I have tried:

First the Server specification is : 2 AMD CPU 4 Cores = 2 SOckets, 8Cores and 8 Logical Processirs

Enable VMQ in Host (Hyper-v Server)

Enable RSS in Guest (VM)

Tried to set the VMQ Base and Max processor for the 2 Network Adapters through the 8 cores but didn't see any difference.

For example:

Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name "NetAdapter_Public" -BaseProcessorNumber 1 -MaxProcessors 8

Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name "NetAdapter_Private" -BaseProcessorNumber 5 -MaxProcessors 8

Note: I have tested the Internet on a Test Server with Hyper-V installed as Host and WS2012R2 VM as Gateway and it did workimmediately without problems.

The VMQ is until now really complicated for me and for sure I'm missing something. I will be gratefull if someone can go through the decryption above and help me to find a solution.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 new VM with ISO in DVD boot failed - default SCSI not IDE

Hi, have created some VMs fine on 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V but now onto 2012 R2, am using the Gen 2 VM and hitting install error when booting them from the 2012R2 RTM .ISO (downloaded straight from Technet) loaded into virtual DVD:

I see from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/53f901e4-5bd0-4e13-80a2-bca2f57b15e9/hyperv-unable-to-boot-from-cd-or-iso-in-vm-machine?forum=winserverhyperv that Hyper-V seems unable to boot from a synthetic SCSI until guest OS actually installed - so Catch-22! But I can't add an IDE Controller because it's not on the list:

I tried the Integration Services and it seems fine on the Settings (including ticking the only one unticked - Guest Services) although if you need to run them from the DVD, it has the same problem - you can see them loaded (or the Win2012R2 ISO) in the DVD Media but you can't make them run through booting on SCSI!

The physical drives are SATA not SCSI but presumably no matter as Hyper-V runs SCSI virtually, but why does Hyper-V default to SCSI and how do I get the DVD to run off an IDE instead if that is the way to install a base OS from .ISO? Or is there an easier way than all this?

TIA, Phil.
