Hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Cluster - Moving Disk Failed

$

Hi,

I'm in the process of upgrading my hyper-v cluster hardware. We've been running a two node cluster for 5 years and the HP DL380 G7 are nearing EOL, so we bought 2 new HP DL 380 G9, connected them to the PS2000, added them to the cluster and everything is working. I can live migrated between all 4 nodes, back and forth no problem. The next is to evict the old DL 380 G7 nodes from the cluster, but before I do that I wanted to move all disks to one of the new nodes. This is where I get this error:

[Window Title]
Error
[Main Instruction]
The operation has failed
[Content]
The action 'Move' did not complete.
[^] Hide Details  [OK]
[Expanded Information]
Error Code: 0x8007174b
Clustered storage is not connected to the node

What's even stranger is that the new node are hosting some of the disks already (I assume they were automatically moved there, I didn't move any disk prior to this).

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is it possible to set up VM LAN with VM spanning across multiple hosts?

I have set up a test environment with 3 physical servers. My goal is to have virtual machines across all of them, which can communicate between one another as well as hosts themselves. All of the 3 servers have windows server 2012 installed and hyper-v enabled. LAN connection is setup between the 3 hosts and whenever I create an external vswitch using the network card which connects the host to LAN, the LAN connection ceases to function properly. Perhaps there is some articles or blogs that could help me get on the right way?

Hyper-V Vlan Issue

I am doing some testing/Learning. I have a PC set up with 3 VMs in Hyper-v all 3 VMs are running Server 2016 TP 5. I have one set up running DNS and Active Directory, and the Other is set up with DHCP and RRAS The 3rd just has server set up and I have assigned a VLAN identifier to it. All 3 VMs are on a Hyper-V Private Virtual Switch so they are on their own Isolated Network so I can mess around and learn on it. I have 2 DHCP Scopes set up and I'm trying to figure if I can get Vlans to work with this when I have the 3rd VM set up for VLAN identification It will never pull an IP from my DHCP Scope. If I turn VLANID off it will Pull an IP from my Main Scope. I have Tried setting up Nic Teaming and Creating an Interface that is Assigned to that Vlan but cant seem to Figure it out or if its even Possible in Hyper-V to build this Completely Vitural or not.

2012 R2 guest hangs at hyper-v logo

Windows Server 2012 R2 Host with GUI.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Guest with GUI.

When the guest is turned on, it gets to the Hyper-V log with the spinning circle and goes no further.  The circle continues to spin.  After rebooting the guest three times, the recovery console comes up.  I can also enter the recovery console using the Windows Server 2012 R2 DVD/ISO.

ChkDsk says the disk is fine.

SCF /SCANNOW/ /OFFDIR /OFFWINDIR did fix some files but that didn't help.

I have reason to believe the last round of MS updates hosed the guest.  Are there any boot logs I can check to see where boot is failing?

Slow 10gb 2012 R2 Hyper-V Live Migration

Hello everyone!

I have an issue that I can't figure out and I'm hoping someone can get a new idea or set of eyes on this problem. I'm going to try and be as detailed as possible... but please ask any questions if I left anything out.

Basically I'm having an issue where i'm not getting the full 10gb transfers (or even close) when doing a Hyper-v move between hosts using 10gb nics. I get 2.5gbps if i'm lucky. These servers are not in production yet and are just being used to test a setup before being rolled out.

I have two similar but not identical Dell Poweredge R910 servers.

The two hosts have 2012 R2 Datacenter with only the Hyper-V Role installed. All updates, firmware and manufactures drivers applied, down to the bios, nics and raid cards as well.

I have installed one Intel X540-T1 10gbe card in each server in a x8 slot. I have these two cards connected via a straight  RJ45 Cat6 patch cable (no switch, no crossover). The cable is 3ft long. I have hyper-v setup to use this as a live migration network by adding the nics ip's in each host under live migrations.

Storage is local between each server a mix of 10K Raid10 and Enterprise class SSD disks. When doing disk to disk (same server) transfers of large file I see up to 900MBps on SSD's so i don't think the storage is a bottleneck.

When I do a live migration move between hosts I get between 2-2.5gbps transfer speeds using this link.

I ran iperf between the two servers and consistently get between 6-6.5gbps so I know these cards are at least working close to their rated speed. I would have thought these tests should be closer to 10gbps though.

Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I have changed the nic setting to enable/disable VMQ, I have enabled/disabled jumbo packets as well as a bunch of other nic settings in an attempt to narrow this down. Nothing really seems to speed this connection up. I have also disabled the c states and c1e in the bios and set everything to maximum performance with no change in speed.

I have tried 3 different patch cables including a non supported 5e patch cable (just to see if the speed degraded) and the speeds stayed the same.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Running unsupported OSs on Hyper-V - MSDOS with graphics

I was in a MOC classroom, talking about hyper-v and its capabilities to run several OSs, inclusing unsupported OSs. SO i´ve tried and succeded installing Solaris 10/11, NetBSD, FreebSD and others (all using text install and modes)

I´ve installed MS-DOS 6.22 under Hyper-V and a basic install works well (anyway, what MS-DOS have to be considered so complex?!?)

But i tried to run old games (very very old ones) like frog, zaxxon and others. None of then worked. Why is that? There is a difference in the graphic mode for MS-DOS and other OSs?

The worst part was not being able to run "Prince Of Persia" with the message "program to big to fit in memory", even doing all config.sys stuff to allow 720KB of RAM!(-:

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 could´t be installed also, because the setups/config doesd not alow mouse/keybord input in the VM

There is a way to install WFW3.11 and/or run MS-DOS old games under Hyper-v? (i know, all of then runs on DOSBOX, but i´m talking about to run under hyper-v, i heard about it will be possible to do all this stuff in virtual BOx and Vmware)

I weird way could be install virtual PC inside the Hyper-V, but it will be very very odd...

High ping latency on Windows Server 2012 virtual machine on Hyper-v

Hello team,

I've been experienced an issue that is affected the performance of my environment. I have the following scenario:

1 - Server Dell R720

1 - SAN DELL MD3220i

1 - Switch Cisco 3750G

As the picture shows, I just have a switch, I'm pretty know that the recommended setting is with two switches, however I just have one of them. A personal of Cisco has configured this device with different vlan's so that means that the connection between the storage and the host works so nice.

The problem is the latency that the virtual machines are experiencing. I have Windows Server 2012 and I'm using Hyper-v to virtualize my virtual machines.

Does anyone know which parameters May I need to modify, enable or disable on Windows Server 2012 - Hyper V to work fine?

I would appreciate your help in this regard!

Thank you in advance!

Regards,

Paul Mendoza.

Instances of Msvm_DiskMergeSettingData have instance ids only from Msvm_ComputerSystem class?

When I list instance of this class, I only see instances whose InstanceID corresponds with those of instances in Instances only from Msvm_ComputerSystem class.

There are no Msvm_DiskMergeSettingData instances whose instance ids are from Msvm_PlannedComputerSystem (If I have a Msvm_PlannedComputerSystem  instance also). How can entries for Msvm_DiskMergeSettingData which have instance ids of Msvm_PlannedComputerSystem be created?

Can  ModifyDiskMergeSettings API be used to disable disk merge behavior on planned VM instances, before realizing them?Or can it only be used for realized VMs too?

Firewall case with hyperv ipv4 forwarding

Hello

I have Hyperv machine where we added couple of VM windows base. From HyperV host we set ipv4 forwarding in registry. Everything is working fine between Host and VMs, but once we enable Windows firewall in VM machine then VM no longer access from outside network.

We have Bypass all port against IP addresses using by VM for inbound and outbound in HyperV host, but are unable to locate why VM stop responding from outside network.

Note: Firewall is enabled on HyperV host and this machine is working fine.

Low Internet Performance with 400MB Internet Speed - Hyper-v, VMQ, RSS, PRAS Nating

$

Hallo everyone,

In the last couple of weeks we bought a new Internet Cable with 400MB/s and we are facing a problem while downloading anything from the internet or from our FTP Server.

Here are the full used Settings:

0) VM is being used as Default Gateway by using PRAS for Nating.

1) The VM is WS2012R2 , while the Host is Hyper-v 2012 r2

2) The Modem is connected directly to the VM with a static IP from the ISP.

3) 2 Network adapters are didicated for the VM. The 1st is for Public Internet with static public IP ( connected to the Modem) and the 2nd is forPrivate local network (connected to our Network).

4) Network Card is Intel I350-T4  1 GB (VMQ supported and DMA Supported).

The problem is when I connect the modem directly to a client, the downlaod speed will be high 25 to 30 MB/s (depending on the website). While when I using our Gateway with the above settings the speed will drop gradually to 2 MB/s and will stay at this speed.

I have tried to work a little bit with VMQ and RSS but no results. Here is what I have tried:

First the Server specification is : 2 AMD CPU 4 Cores = 2 SOckets, 8Cores and 8 Logical Processirs

Enable VMQ in Host (Hyper-v Server)

Enable RSS in Guest (VM)

Tried to set the VMQ Base and Max processor for the 2 Network Adapters through the 8 cores but didn't see any difference.

For example:

Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name "NetAdapter_Public" -BaseProcessorNumber 1 -MaxProcessors 8

Set-NetAdapterVmq -Name "NetAdapter_Private" -BaseProcessorNumber 5 -MaxProcessors 8

Note: I have tested the Internet on a Test Server with Hyper-V installed as Host and WS2012R2 VM as Gateway and it did workimmediately without problems.

The VMQ is until now really complicated for me and for sure I'm missing something. I will be gratefull if someone can go through the decryption above and help me to find a solution.

Is it true that "Dynamic disks are not good candidates for high disk I/O activity"?

Hi

In book "Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V - Deploying Hyper-V Enterprise Server Virtualization Platform" of Zahir Hussain Shah,

authors wrote "Dynamic disks are not good candidates for high disk I/O activity".

If it is true so why in powershell new-vm command we an only create dynamic disk. No option to select fixed disk?

If default option is dynamic disk it looks like Microsoft suggest alllways creating dynamic disks, not fixed VHD disks.

Hyper-V Bios Serial modification in Windows 10

Does anyone know a method for changing the Bios Serial number in the updated Hyper-V .VCMX format?  Our OSD uses the Serial number in our naming convention so in the past we have modified the .xml files to create a unique serial that was short enough that it would correctly name the PC. I have found no way to address or modify the bios serial in the new format.

Setting up a server with Windows Server, Hyper-V, SQL Server, etc.

$

Hello,

I posted this question in another forum and was advised to re-post it in each subject/topic forem - Windows Server; Hyper-V; SQL Server.

My employer provides an MSDN license, so I have that abundant resource available.

I just ordered a small server (Xeon, 4GB, 1TB, no os) for my playground (planning on more RAM, possibly another hard drive).

I have a basic understanding of Windows. My job requires knowledge and support of Windows, virtual (is this Hyper-V?), cloud, SQL Server, Active Directory, Office, etc.

My plan is to build a server that I can use for hands-on experience with Microsoft applications. Just for me; not in a corporate production environment. Nothing like self-provided on-the-job training.

My question is where/how to start? Assumption being that I can download Windows and other applications via MSDN.

Looking for suggestions on the order to install; best practices on configuration; on-line courses; certifications.

Pretty much any words of advice are most appreciated!

Thanks for helping and getting me on the path to success!

Hi,

A vhdx file was splited to tree logical disk in the past:
c: <-- approximately 80GB
d: <-- approximately 250GB
e: <-- approximately 250GB
and the total physical size is 537GB

Than the logical disk e: was deleted ("delete logical drive" in disk management).

How to decrease the physical size of the vhdx file ?

Is it possible ?

Install recommended Hyper-V hotfixes on both hypervisor and guest machines?

$

Microsoft maintains a list of recommended Hyper-V hotfixes in -for example- articles like these:

https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl/kb/3135020

My question is: do I need to install these updates on both the Hypervisor machine itself AND the guest machines that run on it?

An additional question: does it hurt if I approve these updates to servers that don't run Hyper-V (machines with the OS direct on the metal).

I can not find the answer to this rather simple question anywhere, so I hope someone can provide guidance on this.
