Hoting solution, Hyper-V, RDP?

Hello,

I built a control panel and I would to implement the consol management of hyper-v virtual machine.

The missing element is the access to the virtual machine. Something like VNC Xen  or like a drac.

In my analysis, this is not possible if the user is not  in domain or if machine is not visible in the severeur (ping server to client)

Have you ever seen this kind of functionality? Did I miss some things?

Thank you
Giuseppe

hyper-v configuration issues

Hi,

I have been banging my head with few issues for a while, and I hope to get some help here.

I have 2 hyper-v hosts (windows 2012) in a cluster.

both hosts are connected via iscsi to a storage where all the VMs are.

Each one of the hosts have 2 NICs : 1 for iscsi , 1 for connectivity (management and network to VM) , we don't have a huge requirement to add more NICs as the traffic is not bad.

Here are my issues so far and they might be related:

1- Every week I have one of the 2 nodes fails because it disconnects from the storage for some reason, sometimes it fail back to the second node, and sometimes I have to go and start manually all the VMs.

2- When I start the VMs, it's agonizing how slow is the startup process, (it might take between 15 min to 1 hour for a VM to start). After it starts, and I guess it's because it's slow, the network on the VM takes time to start as well, so any network related service on the VM doesn't start (for example MSSQL doesn't start), so I have to go log in to each VM and start the services that didn't start automatically because the network didn't come up fast enough.

3- I used to have live migration working , but since the last failure, live migration doesn't work anymore, I get an error : Failed to live migrate virtual machine 'machine name' For more data, see 'information Details' , and in information details , I get : The action 'Move' did not complete. Error Code: 0x80070057 , the parameter is incorrect.

4- I also noticed in one host an event ID 1196 showing every 15 minutes,  details are: Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason: The handle is invalid.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

After upgrade to 2012, all VMs freeze at stopping state

I was running 4VMs on a single host - all 2008 R2 OS.  I upgraded my host to 2012, and now all of my VMs freeze while trying to shutdown, or restart.  I've figured out it has to be the network drivers - as if I change the VNIC to none, there are no problems restarting or shutting down.  I've tried the stock drivers, new drivers, etc - nothing seems to work now.  Why was this working just fine in 2008R2 and now it's not compatible in 2012??

Anyone have some advice for me besides spending more money on a network card?

Fault tolerance for the Hyper-V hypervisor when running from USB?

$

Is fault tolerance for a server booting & running Hyper-V from a USB flash doable? I know this largely depends on how I define what level of fault I will tolerate but I'm thinking along the lines of physical failure of the flash device such as corruption of the filesystem on the flash device, failure of the electronics of the flash device, etc. I'm wondering what I should do to get back up and runninig when the USB stick burns out if I opt to run from a USB stick? Is there a best practice document on USB and Hyper-V? (if there is, I haven't found it)

thanks for any input!

Hyper-V Deleted Snapshot Issue

We accidentally deleted a hyper-v snapshot from the windows explorer view without merging it back into the main .vhd file and since it was such a big file it skipped the recycle bin. Now before removing this snapshot file in windows explorer we had in the past removed the snapshot via the GUI. We just never knew we needed to merge the files back into the main .vhd. The reason we removed the snapshot .avhd file was because we needed to expand our virtual hard drive size and it said we couldn't as snapshots existed. Hence we figured since we had removed the snapshot via the GUI that the file could be removed safely. We found out wrong.

When we went and booted up the original .vhd it set us back four months in time and we had to restore our windows server from backups to bring it up to date. Now our virtual machine is currently running and we can power it off and back on with loosing any data but we have noticed a difference in the vm's behavior since the night we recovered. Other virtual machines that are running will update the time stamp on the .vhd file as time goes on. This .vhd that we reverted back to and then restored on top of does not update the .vhd file time stamp. The only time that .vhd file time stamp gets updated is when the virtual machine is powered off and back on.

I understand that when the snapshot was removed without being remerged it got rid of a portion of time. How can we get our .vhd file to go back to updating properly? Any suggestions? This is a production server so we need to get this fixed so any help is really appreciated.

Hibernating a guest VM on Hyper-V

$

Hi,

I need to hibernate a VM to use some automated tests. My VMs are running Server 2012, and my host is Windows 8, with Hyper-V. Apparently this was possible in 2006 (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2006/01/23/516119.aspx) however I can't figure out how to make it work with my current set-up, I simply get "the system firmware does not support hibernation" when I try to run "powercfg -h on" (on the VM of course).

Does anyone know if this is possible and how to do it?

Thanks, Adrian

Hyper-V accessing host's AD.

I'm about to pull my hair out!

I have a DC1 running Windows Server 2012, with 2 NICs - 10.0.1.10 and 172.0.1.10.  These are configured for public and private LANs, respectively.  This works great.

I have created a Windows Server 2012 Standard VM in Hyper- V on the DC.  How do I configure the VM/Hyper-V to connect and register with AD?

I've created two External NICs - both of which are assigned to the 2 NICs on the machine.  I want to assign IPs 10.0.1.22 and 172.0.1.22, respectively, to the VM's two NICs.

It can't see out of the VM and the network cannot see into the VM.

Detailed instructions would be great as I'm not a pro in Windows Server.

Windows server 2012: Hyper V VM migration failure

Hi.

We have installed and configured Hyper V on W2K12 servers.

Also installed a Guest VM running Windows server 2012 64 bit.

Source and destination hosts are part of domain.

When we try to migrate the VM we get the error:

Anyone has any idea why it is failing ?

tried a lot googling and reading technet site but couldn't get anything relevant to Hyper V.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi,

we have a 4 node Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cluster with a few VMs. Since this week on monday we have problems while accessing CSVs from some nodes.

NodeNames:

130
131
132
133

For example: If Node 133 owns all three CSVs everything is working fine.

If I transfer the ownership to Node 130 the following ocourrs:
Node 130 (the owner itself), 131 and 133 can access the volume. 132 cannot.

If I transfer the ownership to Node 132 the following ocourrs:
Node 132(the owner itself), 131 and 133 can access the volume. 130 cannot.

Also what we see:

If I open on Node 130 Hyper-V Manager I can connect to 131 and 133 but not to 132. I will get an RPC error

If I open on Node 132 Hyper-V Manager I can connect to 131 and 133 but not to 130. I will get an RPC error

We already have checked/done the following:

Disabled TCP Chimney

Hotfixes installed:
Windows6.1-KB2494016-x64
Windows6.1-KB2639032-x64
Windows6.1-KB2674551-x64
Windows6.1-KB2685891-x64

KB-Article checked:
Unable to access ClusterStorage folder on a passive node in a server 2008 R2 cluster
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2008795/en-us

The above KB article is exactly what we are seeing but the recommended actions are already in place.

Do you have any further Idea what we can try to get the problem solved?

"The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol" after enabling RemoteFX Windows 8 VM

I receive the error anytime I try to connect (from Windows 7 physical client machines running the recent RDP 8 "update") to the Windows 8 VM (w/RemoteFx enabled) running on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Server. The GPU on the server is DirectX 11 capable. At one point this was working, however, just recently this stopped working (not sure if any Windows Server 2012 updates did this or the RDP 8 "update" for Windows 7/2008 R2).

If I connect to the Windows 8 VM (with RemoteFx enabled) from the Hyper-V manager, the connection works (no licensing protocol errors)

However, if I remove the RemoteFx from the Windows 8 VM, all RDP 8 clients connect fine.

I've checked all the event logs (noticed no errors) and the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Agent is running. I've checked the RD Licensing Diagnoser and no errors reported.

Access denied when starting VM.

I checked permissions on the VHD and I set them very loosely, everyone has full control, system has full control, domain users have full control. This is Windows 8 Enterprise Hyper-V.

Server 2012 Hyper-v External network still able to route on Host LAN

$

We have a new HP server, running Server 2012 Standard w/4 nics.  2 nics are disabled, one nic is connected to our local lan, and the other active nic is connected to our ISP only.  Both nics have static IP addresses, with the ISP nic the only one having a gateway so all traffic is routed through that nic with the exception of the local lan traffic.

The reason for the above is we have made an image of a live SQL server that we would like to boot up, install all windows updates, and test upgrading to latest version of SQL, etc...

I have created a virtual switch, called it DMZ, and associated it with the nic that is directly connected to the ISP.  I have turned off Allow management operating system to share this network adapter.  I have also assigned a static IP to this NIC in the VM.  From within this VM, I have internet access that is going out through the ISP rather than local lan as verified by tracert.  This works and looks good.  The only issue we have is, we can still ping internal ip addresses on our local lan.  We cannot resolve names, but can ping IP addresses, which is a little scary as we want to completely isolate this from our internal network so we don't foul anything up production wise.  We have tried everything from creating false routes, etc... but after failing to ping 1 time, it someone autocorrects itself and finds the route back again.  I have scoured everything and cannot find the answer.  Any help would be much appreciated.

VMs in Replica Server (Win 2012)

$

Hi,

We are in the process of buying 2 servers to consolidate our existing physical servers and saw the Hyper-V Replica feature in Win 2012.

I'm thinking of buying two new servers (one primary and one Replica) and install them next to each other. Once everything is running and the replication properly setup, do I have to manually start the VMs in the Replica Server in case the Primary goes down?

I would assume that Primary-Replica Servers replication would mean that exact replicas are created in the Replica Server e.g. Virtual Machine as well as the VHDX, and I don't have to create VM in Replica Server.

Thanks.

How to set up an RDP to acess a Hyper-V VM on the same PC

$

Very new at this, so try to keep it simple :)

I have a Hyper-V VM set up with XP loaded on it (after getting a Product Key issues resolve by Microsoft support) on a Windows 8 Pro PC.

I now want to view the VM in a larger (full screen) window.

As I understand it the Hyper-V window cannot be enlarged, I need to set up an RDP.

I have allowed remote access in System Properties.

When I open RemoteApp and Desktop Connections and enter my URL I get "the e mail address you entered is not valid"  Well OK I didn't input an e mail address.

When I enter my Microsoft sign in e mail I get "Connection discovery failed"

When I try through Remote Desktop Connection and enter either the URL or the computer name, I get:

Your computer could not connect to another console session on the remote computer because you already have console session in progress

ThanksThe help on this error is not helpful at all.

I have tried the IP of the VM and the IP of the Windows 8 machine, no connection.

So, how do I set up RDP to access a VM on the same computer?
