Replace Disk that use pass-through don`t show status

 Is it correct?

Do I need to show disk status?

Hi!

I have Windows 2012 R2 server with Hyper-V. I created a guest machine with Windows 10. I found out that Windows 10 machine is not eligible for live backup with Windows Server Backup. I did some research and found the following message in Event Log:

Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor failed to connect to virtual machine 'Andy Windows 10' because the version does not match the version expected by Hyper-V (Virtual machine ID 3200491C-8CF8-4996-B4C7-C0EC34F7D5B3). Framework version: Negotiated (0.0) - Expected (3.0); Message version: Negotiated (0.0) - Expected (5.0). To fix this problem, you must upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

According to instructions I inserted the Integration Services disk, but Windows 10 said that all Integration Services are up to date and there is nothing to install.

This problem occurs on two separate servers, only with Windows 10 guests. All another guests (I have 2012 Servers, Windows 7) work without any problems.

Please help.

How could I install Windows Server Essential Connector on Hyper-V Server Core machine?

I have two Windows Server 2012 R2 servers with Hyper-V server core installed on both. Then I have a windows 10 computer with the hyper-v manager and RSAT tools. On my windows 10 computer I'm hosting a VM with Windows 2012 Server Essentials, which is my domain controller. I joined both of my hyper-v server core machines to the domain, but when I go to the dashboard on my windows server 2012 VM neither of the hyper-v server core machine shows up in the devices tab. I'm pretty sure I need to install the windows essentials connector software to get them to show up (so i can manage backups) but the hyper-v server core machines don't have a gui (its all command-line interface) so I am unsure how to proceed. Usually you would go into internet explorer and type "http://<servername>/connect to install the software, but I obviously can't do that on my hyper-v server core machines. So my question is how can do that from the command line, or how could i install it from a flashdrive without the gui.

Change HardDisk Path from existing VM

Greetings,

so I have a working VM (VM01) with the VHDX located at "C:\HD\VM01\".

I would like to move the VHDX to another location without deleting, recreating or reimporting the VM itself.

The new location of the VHDX File should be at "C:\Share\VM01\"

I was playing with the .xml File which includes all the specific VM settings, changing the location in there didn't help.

Also I tried to change the Path of the VHDX File in the VM Settings, trying to change the path won't work, resulting in a Error "Error applying Hard Drive changes".

Any Ideas how to achieve this task?

P2V not booting and unable to boot recovery - HyperV

Hi there,

I've just done a p2v using VMware standalone and then done a conversion using 2tware which both were successful.

I then tried booting up the VHD and just getting a black screen with blinking cursor.

I've done a bit of search and seems like I need to get into the cmd so I downloaded 2008 r2 install iso and created a vm in Hyper V console. Attached the iso and the VHD however when clicking repair windows I get This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows."

Any ideas to get this booting so I can access cmd?

Ps. If I remove the VHD and just leave it to boot from disk I can get into repair manager but not much use when the VHD isn't attached

2012 Hyper-V Cluster... Adding ISCSI Storage to Guest VMs

We have a 2012 Hyper-V Cluster.  I need to create a VM on the cluster and give it additional drive space.  To do this I would like to assign a ISCSI volume to the VM. The VMs themselves do not have direct access to the iscsi SAN, only the hosts

I would assume I have to attach the new ISCSI Volume to one of the hosts, then add the volume under Storage in the Failover Cluster Manager.  Once I do that I can assign the drive to VM under the VMs Settings?

I then assume that if the VM live migrates from one node of the cluster to another, that the drive will follow along?

Thanks!!

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 & Windows 7 Clients

Im trying to deploy Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, and for the life of me I can't get my Windows 7 management pc to connect to it using the hyper-v manager tool in RSAT.  I've set Hyper-V Server to allow remote management and remote desktop.  Im able to manage everything else in the PC, ie if I go and bring up an mmc snap in, I can manage local users and groups, the firewall, services but not the Hyper-V Manager. It keeps coming back with an error saying that it failed to connect.  Any advice on how to accomplish this would be most appreciated.

"Turn Off" or really "Save"/"Shutdown"?

$

I am performing an in-place migration from a Windows Server 2012 Failover Cluster to a Windows Server 2012 R2 Failover Cluster.  In the documentation for "Hyper-V Cluster Using Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) Migration", in the steps to "[R]un the virtual machine on new cluster," it specifically says to "Turn off the virtual machines that have been migrated over to the new cluster."  I cannot believe it is recommending to actual use the "Turn Off" option, since that is tantamount to pulling the plug on the system.  What I can't seem to find is any guidance on whether the virtual machines can be saved or whether they must be shutdown to successfully complete the migration.

Anyone have any experience with this cluster migration, specifically with respect to the state of the virtual machines on the original cluster node/new cluster node?

Copy and pasting VM server folders

I just took over a new IT job that uses Hyper-v.  They have the D drive which only holds the VM hard drives and folders as a Raid 5.  I want to take it to a Raid 10.  If I shutdown all the VM's and copy the folders to a external hard drive.  When I format the drive will I be able to just copy the folders back or will I need to do a export/import to reformat my D drive.  My C drive which is my operating system(server 2012 R2) won't be touch.

Virtual Server requirements

Hi there,

We are about to change our corporate server. We are going to get a 2-node cluster that will have Windows Server 2012 R2. At the beginning we will create 6 virtual servers with Windows Server 2012 R2.

How many licenses of Windows Server 2012 R2 are we going to need? 1 for each node and 1 for each virtual total 8 licenses?

Does the virtual server (Windows Server 2012 R2) has the same storage requirements as the physical server (Windows Server 2012 R2)?

Thanks in advance.

Cannot upgrade Integration Components of R2 guest on R2 host

Hi,

Some Hyper-V patches require you to upgrade the IC of the guests. In order to keep everything correctly versioned I have created some scripts which raise alerts when the IC of the guest don't match the version of the host. I then go and upgrade the ones that are out of date.

I am having a problem updating SOME of my WS08R2 guests. Some have upgraded fine so I don't understand what is going wrong with these last 2 guests. Here is what happens:

  1. I insert the integration components CD using the Hyper-V manager
  2. I run the setup.exe out of the support\amd64 folder
  3. It gets as far as "Installing Guest Components" when an error appears saying "An error has occurred: One of the update processes returned exit code 14101"

Having a look at the vmguestsetup.log file show the following error:

-->8

Temporary directory = C:\Windows\Temp\{b9054f11-0c3c-44a2-845e-e83b97878e46}
Command Line: "C:\Windows\system32\pkgmgr.exe" /ip /m:"C:\Windows\Temp\{b9054f11-0c3c-44a2-845e-e83b97878e46}\Windows6.1-HyperVIntegrationServices-x64.cab" -quiet -norestart
Process exit code = 0x3715

-->8

So I have then tried running the command line above without the quiet switch and I get the following error:

Operation failed with 0x80073715

The identities of the manifests are identical but their contents are different.

I've tried rebooting the guest prior to installation, I've tried getting SCVMM 2008 R2 to install the guests services for me, I've tried migrating the VM to another node in the cluster and I've tried copying the guest components out of the ISO from another VM host and installing them that way.

Why wont it work?

Hello Guys,

I have HP proliant Bl465c G7 Physical Servers, there i have installed The hyper V 2012 and some VM are already running Perfectly fine,

Lately i got in the Trouble with one of the Host Has failed and i have lost one of the most important VM along with it. so I came to the Point that i should do the Hyper V clustering for such a situation.

My Hyper V server's are not part of the Domain and i want to make this Replication to work.as far as i understood i need to Put my Hyper in my Domain and then i can use the replication function?

when i try to enable the Replication on VM i get this error Message.

Is there any Other way that i can make it work or I do need to put this Hyper v in the Domain.

thank you so much for your TIme.

Hi, here is my problem.

I've set up 3 hyper-v hosts windows 2012 R2 in a Cluster.  My problem arise when i try to backup my VM's with Veeam, i can take a crash consistent backup but when i try to use the "Application Aware Processing" it fails.

Here is the error reported by Veeam :

Hi there,

I am currently backing up Hyper-V VMs to IBM's TSM and it is failing on a particular virtual machine. The below 4 events have occurred on the backup last night for example:-

VSS writers inside virtual machine 'NSC License Server VM' failed to perform BackupComplete to its shadow copy (VSS snapshot) set: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF). (Virtual machine ID 5517A8FF-735D-4EDD-94B3-1300648D79F6)

Checkpoint operation for 'NSC License Server VM' failed. (Virtual machine ID 5517A8FF-735D-4EDD-94B3-1300648D79F6)

Checkpoint operation for 'NSC License Server VM' was cancelled. (Virtual machine ID 5517A8FF-735D-4EDD-94B3-1300648D79F6)

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Looking at a new server with 12 drive bays - looking to do 1 pair of 600 GB mirrors for the OS then 2 SSD cache drives then 1 big 8 drive raid 10 with 4 TB drives. Is this valid or should we do 2 TB or 1 TB drives?

Network lost suddenly while virtual nic showing enabled

Hi,

I am facing an issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 Physical machines as well as few Hyper-V role installed machines VM's. The issue is that sometime suddenly the Ethernet stops responding and communication with external machines or other VM's of the same server gets lost, however logging into VM via console we always found that Ethernet is enabled and ping response to loop back address as well as VM IP address within the VM works fine.

If I try to disable and enable virtual nic, it gets stuck and eventually we have to reset server to resolve the issue. After resting, VM works fine. No events related to issue found in event manager (system or application both).

My Physical base servers on which Hyper-V roles installed are Dell Power Edge R410 & R710. Physical Ethernet Cards installed are of Broadcom Corporation (Broadcom BCM5716C NetXtreme II GigE & QLogic BCM5709C Gigabit Ethernet).

Can you please update if this is a known issue and how it can be solved?

Regards,

Zain Khan

Optimizing Hyper-V VM CPU Utilization

$

For WinSvr 2012 R2 Hyper V, what are recommended settings for Resource Control to get the highest performance from VM's. I have both 2012 R2 (4) and Win10 VM's (4) on the same machine. The 2012's are barely used, but the Win10's are living workspaces. When I study the real-time CPU utilization with Hyper-V Manager or TaskManager, the VM's altogether seem to use only a max 10% of the overall cycles, even when installing updates. Why?

Can I de-optimize the server?

TIA, Marc
