Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V

On Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host, there 4 Virtual Machines. The VMs have Internet Connectivity through an External Virtual Switch. However, the VMs are unable to ping each other.  I tried using a second Virtual Private Switch, but this doesn't work. Any insight would be much appreciated.  Also, the location of any documentation on networking VMs would be appreciated.  For example, could the external switch be enough for the VMs to communicate internally and externally?  There doesn't appear to be a reason why it shouldn't.

Setting for Hyper V, Multi Domain, Single Gateway, Single Internet path out

Greetings to all,

I've set upon my own endeavor to, within my HV (Hyper V) environment, working with the HV Switch Manager (HVSM), to build 2-5 domains. Each domain having it's own gateway, that gateway able to route traffic to other domain-and/or- route to actual real world internet.
I don't believe a central gateway/router would be needed in this setup. Each gateway would/could utilize the path out independently. Would this be a correct assumption of the HV Switch Manager functionality?

I am planing on each domain population to be about 4-7 Svs, Win/Linux mixed, a DB present in each, servicing it's own domain.
I'm wondering the best way to do this? In HVSM- Would I need to create individual internal (IntnNet1, IntnNet2, IntnNet3, etc) VNetworks switches for each domain? Or better to set each as a private network?

What is the best, preferred method to use considering the total environment. IP addressing is a non issue, hence I am unsure to utilize the 'private' network option.
This would be a dev/testing type environment. I have VMware Workstation available for the use, of which has nice functionality in respect to the ability to create multiple VNetworks (Net0, Net1, Net2, etc) to support communications. But I want to do this in HV.
Looking for advice or guidance in this endeavor.

Thank you in advance,

Monitoring vSwitch Traffic for Native VLAN in Hyper-V 2012 R2

Using 2012 R2 Hyper-V, created (3) vNICS in the managementOS (backup, mgmt., livemigration) and have a LACP team that has a vSwitch configured WITHOUT"allow mgmt OS to share this NIC" so it DOES NOT show up in the network connections GUI as a vEthernet and for that matter not in Task manager either, which is a really neat and helpful feature. VM's all run on the native untagged VLAN on the vSwitch to simplify things, but I can not monitor all the aggregated traffic from my VM's now.

VMName                 VMNetworkAdapterName          Mode     VlanList
------                       -------------------- ----            --------
                             HostManagement                    Access     20
                             Backup                                  Access      30
                             LiveMigration                         Access      50
Upgrade Test Virtual Machine Network Adapter      Untagged

How can I configure the vSwitch to show up in the GUI/Task manager to be able to monitor traffic on the native VLAN for all my VM's like I can for the vNICs?

Thank you

Restoring/Reparing a Window 2008 Hard Drive as a Win2008 VM?

Hi, I have a downed Windows 2008 box used for VS2010 development and product building. It has a 256 GB C: drive. I had also use it as an "non primary" AC/DC for exploration.  Didn't get much into it yet.  I have a new box with WIn10 ENT where I am exploring all this Hyper-V stuff.

Is it possible to add the old hard drive to the new box directly (not USB) and  "boot it up"  as a VM where I can restore/repair the 2008 OS now running as a VM?  Ideally, at a minimum I would like to recreate my VS2010 current build environment as "C: Drive" since all the batch files, references is for the C: drive.   I saw something regarding SysInternal's Disk2VHD?

Thanks

Live Migration speed vastly different when guest is powered ON (1.4-2Gbps) vs OFF (5.5-6Gbps)

Started a thread asking about slow Live Migration over a 10Gbps link, was seeing 1.4Gbps.

https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1571331-slow-live-migration-over-10g-link?page=1#entry-5738977

But then discovered that it shot up to 6Gbps when the guest was powered off.

Should I expect an 80% decrease in Live Migration performance when the guest is powered on? Anything I can try to do to improve this?

Dropping every 16th byte of data sent from VM to host via pipe emulating com1...

$

Situation:

We are attempting to dial a modem from a VM using a standard windows dialer that is connected to the "real" com1 on the host. Everything seems to be connected fine, the modem is responding, the expected "sounds" are heard when dialing. However, every 16th byte is dropped as seen by the software in the host reading the pipe. As a result, our user name and password are junk and we fail authentication. After the loss of the 16th byte, the data received by the pipe reader is just as expected.

Hypothesis:

We must somehow be overrunning the "virtual UART"?

Context:

Windows 2012 Server R2 (Host)

Windows 2012 Server R2 (VM)

Com1 in VM "redirected" to named pipe serviced by host where software is connected and forwarding data to the *real* com1 which is connected to a modem.

All relevant bauds are set at 9600, but have experimented both high and low without success.

Send/receive buffers are set to max size (com1, advanced settings in VM).

All different flavors of flow control have been attempted in VM (xon/xoff, hw, none).

The pipe reader is not lolly-gagging....logs show that is *extremely* responsive in reading the data.

We have disabled all logging in the event that we were being adversely impacted.

Requested Support:

Has anyone experienced such trouble? In addition to experimentation with flow control, baud rates, drivers, and you name it, we have begun to pursue chants and waving of chicken bone necklaces to honor both our host and VM computers.

Thanks.

Alex

Server 2012 R2 Pass Through NVME Drive to Linux VM

I need to pass through an Intel 3700 NVME drive and an Intel 10G NIC to a Linux VM  on Windows Server 2012 & Hyper-V to achieve a maximum bandwidth between both. (every byte/s counts)

There is no need for high flexibility because the Server is used for lab applications and the NVME drive as well as the 10G NIC is dedicated to one task.

I know I can do this in vmware but I'm not sure whether it's possible with Hyper-V and how this is done.

Cannot connect to Windows Server 2012 Core using HYPER-V Manager

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 Core running 3 VMs that I cannot connect to using HYPER-V Manager. I am trying to connect from windows 10, but have also tried from windows 7. The machine is added to the domain.

I am trying to move a VM to another Windows Server 2012 R2 host.

I keep getting the following error:

"An error occured while trying to connect to <computername>. Check that the VM Management Service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server"

I can connect using ProHVM and the management service seems to be running ok. I have used Sconfig to add my user to local admins. MMC remote management is enabled and allow server remote management is enabled. Firewall is off.

Any ideas?

a new deployment...

Hi ! I'm setting up a new environment for my small biz, and would like to ask you for help.

Here is my scenario:

I bought a new dell t430 with four 2 TB seagate 7200 rpm disks, created them as two virtual disks in raid 10 (one partition for 2TB, and the second for 1,637).  I know I could create one virtual disk with GPT, but I didn't do it.

Then I installed windows 2012r2 (standard version) and choose the first partion, I gave it 120 GB. The rest (almost 2 TB) I left for virtual machines and hyper-v. So I have now (c: - 119,48 GB, d:1928 GB and E:1677 GB(this is on second virtual disk)

Now, after installation I upgraded the physical server with recent updates, switched off windows firewall, and  install hyper-v.  Windows license states that I can have two more virtual windows, so I choose one to be a AD, DHCP, and DNS, and the second for the file server.

Now After installation of the first vm, I've noticed that my windows virtual machine sees only 120 GB of disk space (the same as main physical instance). During setup of virtual machine I put main vhdx files along with hyper-v system files on D: disk. I know I can expand it  to achieve more space by clicking settings and choosing new size for the vm.

So my questions are:

1. Did I make a right decision to make two virtual disks? I've planned to use second virtual disk as a backup for virtual machines, I would like to make them using altaro hyper-v backup.

2. Due to licensing I must choose wisely. I understand that the only thing I can put on physical windows instance is my Hypervisor role, and I can't add more features without license, right? That's really important to me, because somewhere (either on either physical or virtual server) I must install sql server. Where would be the best place for it?

Physical server where hypevisor is installed? Or VM with AD,DNS AND DHCP? Or second virtual machine, where I plan to install file services role so users will use it as their main network share disk.

Can you give me an advice, please?

Regards,

Xfeel

move VMs between datecenters

I am in the process of moving to a new data center and want to migrate my VMs to new hosts. This means new IPs. What are my options for least amount of downtime? Is SFTP the only way to migrate a vhd/vhdx between networks?

Windows 2012 HyperV machines running slow

$

Hi

I have just built a windows 2012 std server and added HyperV the machine is a domain controller on a HP ML350 G8 with two processors and 104GB ram, it has 7 x virtual machines all Windows 7 64bit SP1 each machine has 125GB of allocated disk space and 8GB RAM, they have all used around 70GB of that space.

I have teamed all 4 NIC's together so there is 4GB going into the switch which is a Cisco 3560 48 port POE with 4 x 1GB ports that I have connected the system too.

When remote users connect to the VM's and work on word machines are a little slow but workable however when they have to connect to Sage or Digita which are accounting data bases they run like a dog. this is accessed by a URL or mapped drive I have tried both, users who are local to the site connect to the database and this runs very well, also when I open either database locally on the server it also runs well.

My assumption is there is a configuration issue with the VM.s does anyone have any ideas?

Procedure to change IP Address of cluster & two physical nodes

$

I have a failover cluster connected to 2 physical nodes, running 5 virtual servers. I need to change the internal ip address range & would like to know the correct procedure to make these changes.I am assuming these to be the correct steps but would like clarification.

From one of the physical nodes open Failover Cluster Manager, connect to & shut down virtual servers.

Select the cluster & click Take the cluster resources offline, then click shutdown cluster.

Ensure the cluster has shutdown on both physical nodes.

Change the IP address on the two physical nodes, rebooting as required.

Open Failover Cluster Manager on one of the physical nodes select the cluster & click Restart the cluster on both physical nodes, connect to the cluster using cluadmin & change the ip address & bring the resource back online from on of the physical nodes.

Re-Start Virtual Server instances & change the IP Addresses, rebooting as required.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I have running win 2K12 R2 Data center and running Hyper-V on it. I have install win 2K12 R2 Standard on hyper-V running successfully. Then i go to create a Suse Linux SP2 11 on it and also disable "Enable Secure Boot" option. Now it stuck on Booting. After Searching i found that "Legacy Network Adapter" is also required for this but it not showing in the "Add Hardware" list. There are only "SCSI Controller" , Network Adapter" and " Fiber Channel Adapter" available.Help me for installing Suse Linux on Hyper-V.

Fix access denied errors on non-clustered shared storage using a separate 10G network for NAS traffic.

$

I need guidance on fixing "General access denied error (0x80070005)" when moving a VM between Hyper-V hosts, and also creating a new virtual hard disk, from an administrative workstation.

Scenario:
Hyper-V host servers "Host1" and "Host2" and Storage server "Nas1" are all connected by both a 1G and a separate 10G network.
All 3 servers are Windows Server 2012 R2 with a 1G and a 10G NIC, the administrative workstation "Wks1" is Windows 8.1 Enterprise (actually, a VM), all are joined to domain "acme.local".

What is the best method to make Host1 and Host2 use the 10G network to connect to the share on Nas1?

On the domain controller, I added static DNS records mirroring the 1G network, adding a "z" to the host name, using a different subnet designation.  Example:  all "1G" hosts use addresses in 192.168.1.0 range, all "10G" network hosts use addresses in the 10.1.1.0 range.  So where Host1 is 192.168.1.18, then zHost1 is 10.1.1.18, an so on.

All the host machines using shared storage are configured to use the common share: \\zNas1\vm
(I know upper-case is ignored in host names, I use upper-case letters here for readability)

From Wks1, when I try to create a new .VHD disk-file, I get the error:
The server encountered an error tyring to create the virtual had disk.
The system failed to create '\\zNas1\vm\disks\test1.vhd':
General access denied error (0x80070005).

I get a similar message when trying to move a VM:
Failed to get the disk information.
Account does not have permission to open attachment.
Failed to get the disk information.
'': account does not have permission required to open attachment '\\zNas1\vm\disks\wks2.vhd'
Error: 'General access denied error' (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID)

Oddly, I can click "Close" on the pop-up, then "Next" throught the wizard choosing the otions to move the machine but NOT the storage, and the VM will move just fine, as long as I use the options "Move the virtual machine's data by selecting where to move the items" and "Move the virtual machine's items to different locations" then de-selecting the .VHD file(s).

From Wks1, I can create a new .VHD disk-file using the 1G network, example: '\\Nas1\vm\disks\test1.vhd'

These same problems occur when using Hyper-V management tool on the servers, if I try to "pull" a VM from the other server, I can only "push" a vm to get it to move without any problems.

I have tried wide-open permissions on the "\\Nas1\vm" share and directory structure, example: EVERYONE,RWX.
I tried adding Wks1 to the "delegation" tab in AD.
Where can I find what the CORRECT permissions should be on the Nas1 share, directories, and the .VHD file (including, what should the "owner" be)?

Or am I going about it wrong in trying to tell Hyper-V to access the .VHD disk-files on the shared storage using the 10G network?

Thanks in advance for you help!!

Multiple AVHDX files for only one snapshot...

Hello together,

we have multiple Hyper-V-Servers on a Windows Server 2012, and we are using the snapshots feature for all of them.

But only one Hyper-V-Server is creating multiple AVHDX subfiles for only one snapshot. All other servers creating one new AVHDX file for every new snapshot. In the screenshot below you see a part of the files for only 2 snapshots of the "problem-server".

The Hyper-V-Server with the problem is a Windows Server 2012R2 with MSSQL2014 Server.

All our Hyper-V-Servers have nearly the same configuration in the Hyper-V-Manager.

And if we create a new snapshot, at this particular time.this is the only snapshot. There are no overlapping creations of other snapshots.

If you need more information, pls contact me.

Hi All,

I have a hyper-v server 2012.

I want to create a VM and assign generation 2 VHDX to install Microsoft Windows Server 2012.

But I found the keyboard does not work, the mouse is OK.

That cause me cannot key-in hard drive size to create the new partition.

I tried to install Windows Server 2012 "R2" and everything is work. But my license belongs Server 2012.

Is there someone who has or had persistent problems?

Many Thanks,

Yiwei
