Not able to install Windows 2008 r2 VM on Windows 2012 r2 (non-SLAT) Hyper-V host

Hi Windows 2012 r2 Experts,

I need to install Windows Server 2008 r2 VM, on a non-SLAT - Dell Optiplex 755 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor (2.4GHz, 8MB L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB, VT) Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-V host, with 5GB of RAM. However, the OS installation stalled after clicking Install button at Starting Windows screen. I have allocated 1GB RAM and 2 virtual processor. Refer to Dell Optiplex 755 technical specification http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/opti_755_techspecs.pdf for detail.

On the other hand, it was possible to install Windows Server 2012 r2 VM on the same Hyper-V host. As a result, this issue appears to an unsupported installation of Windows Server 2008 r2 on Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-V, as opposed to any hardware limitation such as RAM, non-SLAT CPU. Is this correct? Also, how much RAM would you recommend? Does this processor meet minimal hardware requirement to run Windows Server 2012 r2?

I need Windows Server 2008 r2 as part of lab exercises in the MCSE Windows 2012 r2 training.

Thanks a lot,
George

Remote access Hyper-V 2016 core (No GUI)

So I am trying to test the new Hyper-v 2016 and I followed the steps from below to access the server remotely using Hyper-V console on  my Windows 10 PC.  I am still not able to access the server remotely a

The tutorial I used
<http://www.ivobeerens.nl/2015/08/28/manage-hyper-v-in-a-workgroup-remotely/

The error is:
Error occurred while attempting to connect to server '192.168.1.100'.  Check that the Vrtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server.

I did a run as on my MMC console and ran as the local administrator of my PC which is the same as the admin account on the server.  The only thing I see that is different is that I can't set a password on my hyper-v 2016 core and it autologons with ??? password.

I looked at the technet downloads and haven't seen any documentation on how to configure the server for remote access.

Can anyone advise me please?  Thanks!

P.S.  Do we still call it the Core version to tell others it has no GUI?

Visual Studio Emulators for Android doesn't work on Windows 10

Hi,

When I try to start emulator the start task fails, with message like below.

10.08.2015 14:06:01: [Critical] Unable to add user to the Hyper-V Administrators group. Exit code 2220.

I was using it on Windows 8.1 where it worked well on the same PC. This proves that my PC meets all requirements and it is properly configured. After clean install of Windows 10 emulator doesn't work.

Hyper-V on my PC is running well. I can create and run 32 and 64 bit vm's. There is problem with creating android vm's by vs emulator. There is no group "Hyper-V Administrators" and it can't be created.

Tried these solutions:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/09/28/creating-a-hyper-v-administrators-local-group-through-powershell.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/01/17/allowing-non-administrators-to-control-hyper-v.aspx

also i tried to recreate InitialStore.xml for Hyper-V with needed group and operations but without success. It seems that hyper-v bundled with windows 10 doesn't require any special group to run, create, manage and remove vm's, switches, etc. Emulator thinks different and it can't assign me to group which does not exists.

Connecting Remote Users

I am trying to load a WS 2012 Standard with Hyper-v. A VM with Essentials and another VM with 2012 Standard. I have all of this loaded but I am not sure what roles need to be on each server to make this work correctly. I have 5 remote users that I am trying to get connected to the standard VM and 8 users connecting to the essentials. Everything I have read says this is the best way to approach this situation but cant find any Data that gives you a step by step installation for this setup.....Can anyone help me?!?!?

The virtual machine could not start because the hypervisor is not running

Hi All

I have a server with an Intel Server Board and Xeon processor. The server was running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. I have done an In Place upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 Std and removed the Essentials feature.

I installed Hyper-V and created a virtual machine but when I want to start the machine I keep getting an error saying the hypervisor is not enabled. Prior to installing the Hyper-V roll I had to do a firmware update on the Bios because even with Intel VT enabled and Data Execution prevention enabled Windows kept telling me it could not install the roll because virtualisation was not enabled in the BIOS. After updating the firmware and making sure everything was enabled I went into System Information and checked that the VT was enabled.

Hyper-V - VM Monitor Mode Extensions Yes
Hyper-V - Second Level Address Translation Extensions Yes
Hyper-V - Virtualization Enabled in Firmware Yes
Hyper-V - Data Execution Protection Yes

After making sure they all said yes I installed the Hyper-V role without any issues. After creating the VM I tried to turn it on and then got the error saying that the machine could not start because the Hypervisor is not running.

I have tired

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype Auto

and restarted the server. And still got the error. I restarted the server and went back into the BIOS and made sure everything that needed to be enabled still was. I shut down the server completely and started it up again. I deleted the VM and completely uninstalled the Hyper-V role, restarted the server, installed the role again, restarted the server but still get the same error.

What else can I try?

Hello.

i have two nodes (vs01 and vs02) with six NIC each.

2 NIC - iSCSI Team
2 NIC - VM Team
and 2 NIC - MGMT HB LM Team - problem.

Server VS01 has on MGMT Team access vlan configuration (server vlan). VM Team - trunk, iSCSI Team vlan iSCSI.

configuration on port Cisco 1 switch:
interface GigabitEthernet0/5
 description Mgmt-Team
 switchport access vlan 82
 storm-control broadcast level pps 1k 100
 spanning-tree portfast
 spanning-tree bpduguard enable

and Cisco 2 switch

interface GigabitEthernet0/5
 description Mgmt-Team
 switchport access vlan 82
 storm-control broadcast level pps 1k 100
 spanning-tree portfast
 spanning-tree bpduguard enable

Why server VS01 do not get the ip address from dhcp? Static IP also not working.

Virtual switch in Hyper-V manager is configured (share this network and vlan id [82])

Sorry for my English :(

i delete MGMT Team and one interface assign ip address but interface two apipa

Repair corrupt VHD

I have a VHD that was damaged it appeby a RAID failure.  The RAID didn't fail the disk but it logged a "A block on the physical disk has been punctured by the controller" and "There was an unrecoverable disk media error during the rebuild or recovery operation" error last night.  The VHD now is showing as blank internally.  If I boot the VM with a 2008 R2 ISO and use recovery tools it shows the main partition as blank.  Also if I attempt to mount VHD via disk manager it prompts me to format disk.  I am moving the VHD to another disk, but is there any chance of recovery or is the VHD too damaged?

exposing ssd from Hyper-V to Windows 8.1 VM

Hi,

My development environment is :

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Core - bare metal hypervisor) is installed on HP Server machine

Windows 8.1 VM is installed on top of it.

I have connected PCIe based NVMe SSD to PCIe slot. This is not a boot drive.

I'm able to see disks through DISKPART utility in Hyper-V machine. Disk is listed.

But when i checked device manager in Windows 8.1 VM, controller is not visible.

Do i need to execute any command to expose NVMe SSD to VM.

Please let me know what i'm missing in the configuration and what commands i need to execute further.

I tried Add-PhysicalDisk powershell command, but getting some error.

Kindly help me in configuring SSD to expose from Hyper-V to VM.

Thanks,

Raphel

SMB multichannel failover not working

$

Hello,

We've got a 4 node Hyper-V 2012R2 Cluster. Each node has 6 NICs.

I've configured the following:

2 for ISCSI - MPIO,

2 for the Hyper-v switch and management - Teamed in switch independent dynamic mode

2 for Live Migration\CSV redirection -not teamed, using SMB multichannel

Now, when testing live migrations, I can see that both NICS are used at the same time and SMB multichannel seems to be working. However, when testing the redundancy, by brining down one of the live migration NICS part way through a migration, the migration(s) would fail.

Could it be that I've missed something with my configuration, or is this normal behaviour?

I thought when using SMB multichannel it was still fault tolerant .

Thanks in advance

Multiple AVHDX files for only one snapshot...

Hello together,

we have multiple Hyper-V-Servers on a Windows Server 2012, and we are using the snapshots feature for all of them.

But only one Hyper-V-Server is creating multiple AVHDX subfiles for only one snapshot. All other servers creating one new AVHDX file for every new snapshot. In the screenshot below you see a part of the files for only 2 snapshots of the "problem-server".

The Hyper-V-Server with the problem is a Windows Server 2012R2 with MSSQL2014 Server.

All our Hyper-V-Servers have nearly the same configuration in the Hyper-V-Manager.

And if we create a new snapshot, at this particular time.this is the only snapshot. There are no overlapping creations of other snapshots.

If you need more information, pls contact me.

Hyper-V R2 - Exporting to a network share in a Workgroup (not Domain environment)

$

OK since Hyper-V R2 it's easier to export to a share, we simply need to give the machine account full access on that share.
(See here for more: http://www.microsoft.com/showcase/en/us/details/6e8115e8-b976-423c-9ce4-1af9de6c67c3)

To add the machine account is easy when the Hyper-V host machine is on the same domain as the share.

In our case, all our Hyper-V hosts are in a workgroup (the Virtual Machines themselves are part of their domains). This allows us to easier manipulare the underlying Hyper-V hosting environment without affecting the domains being hosted. Besides, we are hosting multiple domains on the servers.

Back to the issue, how do I grant the Hyper-V host machine account (which resides in a workgroup) full access to a share (which could either be in a domain or not)? The permissions dialog only supports searching for machine accounts when they are in a domain???

Many thanks,
Jaans

Windows 10 Hyper-V Taskbar Annoyance

$

My host computer is running Windows 10 Version 1511 (10586.164) as is my Hyper-V VM.  I'm attempting to position the taskbar in the VM vertically while leaving my host computer's taskbar in the default horizontal position.  The issue I'm running into is that frequently (yet apparently randomly...I haven't been able to establish a consistent pattern/trigger yet), the host computer's taskbar changes its position to vertical as well.  During my troubleshooting, I've found that this applies to other taskbar and desktop properties as well (e.g., Auto-hide, Lock the taskbar, and desktop background).  Settings that I apply in the VM sometimes get applied on the host...and not necessarily at the same time that I apply them in the VM.  I'm baffled. Anyone else run into similar issues?  Suggestions?

If it matters, I'm running the VM full screen across dual monitors.  I also have Enhanced Session enabled.

Thanks in advance.

HV LM among HV Cluster nodes - Authetication Protocol

Hi

We setup HV (Win 2012 R2 DataCenter) cluster, but not sure about the authetication protocol to be enabled on all hosts. By default it's CredSSP and we plan to change that to more secured Kerberos, if we do so does it require any changes with HV host servers in AD (with Delegation)?

Unable to install hyper-v role using powershell script on server 2012 R2

Script1 calls Script2.  Here are my scripts:

#Script1.ps1

Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Windows.Forms

$Form = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.Form

.\Script2.ps1

#end Script1.ps1

#Script2.ps1 Install-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V #end Script2.ps1

When it tries Hyper-V it hangs at 10% forever:

I've installed a fresh DataCenter edition of Server 2012 R2
I've installed Chipset, Video and NIC drivers
I've joined the domain and logged in as a Domain Admin

Any ideas?

EDIT: I've debugged this down to the fewest commands it takes to reproduce the failure.  For some reason the $Form line is the culprit.  Why can't I create a form and then call another script?!!

Hyper-V Resource Pools in failover cluster

$

I see that you use resource pools for metering which is what I want... but the problem is I can't find any documentation about using resource pools on hyper-v servers that are in a failover cluster. Is there something special you have to do or do you create the exact same resource pools on each hyper-v node?
