Hyper-v VLAN Routing

$

Hi All,

I have installed hyper-v host with IP 192.168.1.173 and created two virtual machines. Details are.

VM1 - 10.1.2.20 - Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0 - VLAN ID - 100

VM2 - 10.1.2.21 - Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0 - VLAN ID 200

How to route the traffic between two different VLAN ID's?

I am experiencing an issue when I removed the Wireless device and then re-installed it on Hyper-V Windows 8.

The error states : "Failed while modifying virtual Ethernet Switch connection settings" followed by "Ethernet port {f...} bind failed unspecified error (0x80004005)"

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

Hyper-V Virtual Machine DNS Records Delete After Live Migration

$

Our setup is as follows...

(3) Hyper-V Hosts

(2) 2012 R2 Virtual Domain Controllers

CSV Storage

When I Migrate a Virtual Server from one host to another the A record for that server gets deleted from DNS.  I can do an ipconfig /registerdns on the VM and it will populate in DNS, but as soon as I migrate the server to another host it will erase again. We're not seeing any errors in Event Viewer.  Within ADSI Edit the dNSTombstoned attribute turns to TRUE after a migration, then back to FALSE after we run ipconfig /registerdns

Any idea why this would be happening or how I can fix this issue?

Using Get-VMSnapshot I can get the size of "SizeOfSystemFiles" but it is not avhdx file.

Thank you for help.

Is it possible to split a VHDX and choose where files go?

$

Hi All,

this is a massive long shot, but is it possible to split a VHDX file into multiple files, each file a separate new virtual drive?! And if so, is it possible to choose which files go to which VHDX?!

I have a lot of media files that I want to split onto another VHDX, but rather than create a new VHDX and copy them (which will take a while), I'd like to just split the VHDX and "select" which files go to each part of the VHDX...!

I'm guessing no, but worth asking before I start the mammoth task of copying all the media...!

Hyperv Disaster Recovery to a Backup Hyper V running DPM

$

We are currently running 2 Hyper v 2012r2 servers that are backed up online for short term and for long term to tape. We have built a single server that is running Hyper V 2012 r2 as well. We have set this up with SQL and also created a DPM installation on the server.

I have installed the tape unit and drivers and can catalog and restore from tape. Our original thoughts were that seeing we do weekly and monthly backups to tape which are stored offsite and all of our critical servers are virtual machines. I expected I would be able to take a tape from our production server insert it into our Disaster Recovery server and after cataloging tapes etc. Be able to do a restore back to this Hyper V server and have a fully function server.

When I try this on our production servers I am able to recover from or HyperV1 server to our Hyperv 2 server. As I go through the recovery steps I have the option to recover as a virtual machine to any host. This option is great and works in production just fine.

However on the DR server we do not get this option. We only see Recover to original instance which is grayed out and Copy to a network folder.

If you use the copy to Network folder selection this does restore the VM to our server but there are no configuration file for network or anything brought over with it as you would have if you did the Recover as a virtual machine to any host.

So thus our dilemma. How can we restore from a tape made on our production environment to our Disaster Recovery server and have the network configuration come with it.

Any suggestions or insight would be much appreciated. I have attached a screen shot what I need to be able to have available to recover as a functional vm.

Bill

Microsoft VmBus Failed to power on with Error 'The system cannot find the file specified.'

Background, we have a Windows 2008 server (Client doesn't want to upgrade) running Hyper-V with a single application VM. There were some issues with an update over the weekend that caused the Hyper-V network services to fail in some rather interesting ways.

We were able to cleanup all fo the errors using details found online except for the following error which seems to not exist according to Google and Bing.
The error appears when we try to start the virtual server or any newly created VM on the host usually after 30 seconds and the server stops immediately with the error.
Event logs show the same details as what is below with no additional help.

---Error Message----
[Main Instruction]
The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'SERVER'.

[Content]
'SERVER' failed to start.

Microsoft VmBus (Instance ID {D41A1872-3740-41CE-A1EE-4522AB82F991}):  Microsoft VmBus Failed to power on with Error 'The system cannot find the file specified.'

[Expanded Information]
'SERVER' failed to start. (Virtual machine B5EA7291-002F-4C1E-A9EB-BDA3702950CE)

'SERVER' Microsoft VmBus (Instance ID {D41A1872-3740-41CE-A1EE-4522AB82F991}): Failed to power on with Error 'The system cannot find the file specified.' (0x80070002). (Virtual machine B5EA7291-002F-4C1E-A9EB-BDA3702950CE)

----End Error---

Has anyone run into this before that could shed some light on what or now I can get the VMBus working again?

Thanks in Advance.

Multiple AVHDX files for only one snapshot...

$

Hello together,

we have multiple Hyper-V-Servers on a Windows Server 2012, and we are using the snapshots feature for all of them.

But only one Hyper-V-Server is creating multiple AVHDX subfiles for only one snapshot. All other servers creating one new AVHDX file for every new snapshot. In the screenshot below you see a part of the files for only 2 snapshots of the "problem-server".

The Hyper-V-Server with the problem is a Windows Server 2012R2 with MSSQL2014 Server.

All our Hyper-V-Servers have nearly the same configuration in the Hyper-V-Manager.

And if we create a new snapshot, at this particular time.this is the only snapshot. There are no overlapping creations of other snapshots.

If you need more information, pls contact me.

VM not pingabale - Destination Host Unreachable

Hi All,

Here is my setup.

I have installed Hyper-v in windows 2012 R2 server. Here is the host details.

IP : 192.168.2.172

SM : 255.255.0.0

I have created two new internal virtual switch named Green network & Yellow Network.

Created 2 VM named Green and yellow. It's details are.

Yellow VM - 10.1.5.10 / subnet mask : 255.255.0.0

Green VM - 10.1.5.11/ subnet mask : 255.255.0.0

Yellow VM has been assigned to Yellow VNIC

Green VM has been assigned to Green VNIC

When I ping from Yellow VM to Green VM its shows "destination host unreachable"

I have tried to assign the Hyper-v host IP (192.168.2.173) as gateway but no luck.

Please let me know what is wrong in my setup?

Hyper-V Replica VMs - Multiple IPs

$

Hi all, couple of quick questions about how to set multiple IP addresses on a primary and replica hyper-v VM. Scenario: There's a four node 2012R2 hyper-v failover cluster in datacenter1 and also a four node 2012R2 hyper-v failover cluster in datacenter 2. Replication for a couple of vms are set up through the hyper-v broker from DC1 to DC2. One of the vms has multiple IP addresses on network adapter 1. In the VM settings on the primary and replica vm you can see the Failover TCP/IP settings which allow you to set a single IP address. Ah, the questions now:

Is there a way to set multiple ip addresses on both the primary and replica vms on the network adapter and if yes how would you do that on both?

What if you have multiple network adapters on the primary and replica vm? Can you somehow set up multiple ip addresses on the first adapter and a single IP on the second adapter?

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.

How do I upgrade Hyper-V Manager from 6.2 to 6.3

Dear All,

I want to create a virtual hard disk over 2TB.

According to my research, I need to assign generation 2 and convert the disk to GPT type.

I have hyper-V manager in my Server 2012 R2m but it does not have generation option for assigning generation 2 type to VHD due to the version is 6.2.9200.16384

How do I upgrade it from 6.2 to 6.3?

Many thanks.

Where can I find the VMGUEST.ISO on Windows 10 Hyper-V?

$

Hello,

I installed Hyper-V on Windows 10 and I'm not able to find the VMGUEST.ISO.

What I really need are the drivers for storage (SCSI and IDE) and network for the virtual hardware because I'd like to use a tool create a scripted installation (PXE boot) and inject the needed drivers on the fly.

I read that the drivers for the virtual hardware are contained in this ISO but I'm not able to find it.

 May you please advise?

KB2920189 fails to install on generation 2 vm's

It looks like there is a problem with the KB2920189 update.

When trying to install it via Windows Update on some servers, they all fails the installation of this update - they are all running 2012 R2 inside generation 2 Hyper-V machines.

Has this update been tested with the UEFI implementation inside Hyper-V?

Hyper-V after clean install of OS

Windows 10 (Hyper-V Manager 10.0.10586.0)

For a reason, I had to make a clean install of the OS.
My Hyper-V settings pointed out another disk volume for Virtual Hard Disks and Virtual Machines, so these are ok and intact.
(I cannot see any way to keep Virtual switches etc. though)

I assume it "must" be possible to "hook into" these 2 locations again after the clean install of the OS, but I failed to see how.
(neither can I see that any backup would help).

A zillion People "must" have experienced this (and solved it ?), please tell me how to solve if possible :)

Backup problems on Hyper-V 2012 when backing up Windows 2012 R2 VMs

$

Hello,

I have an issue that I cannot solve for months.

I have a Hyper-V 2012 multi-site cluster that, apart from other VMs, has also Windows 2012 R2 VMs in it.  This should be supported by Microsoft.

However, when I backup these VMs using Veeam, all VMs work fine except the 2012 R2 ones.  The usual error creeps in (retryable error, VSS timeout).  After I restart the Volume Shadow Copy service on the Windows 2012 R2 VM, all is fine for a day, then the same error occurs on the next backup.

I have seen that this was corrected in KB3063283, but this only works for Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts, not Hyper-V 2012.  How can I make sure the Integration services on my Windows 2012 R2 get upgraded to this version?

Currently the integration  services on my Hyper-V 2012 hosts for Windows 2012 R2 VMs are on version 6.3.9600.17388 .

Please help me since I've been in this situation for months.

Kind Regards,

Vincent Farrugia

Shared Nothing LM powerhsell Access Denied

Hello,

I've been doing some Hyper-V gymnastics which involved migrating bunch of VMs from one standalone Hyper-V host to another. Naturally, I resorted to scripting. I am pretty sure that I've been live migrating unclustered VMs via powershell before but now I'm receiving an "Live migration failed at migration destination host. You do not have permission to perform this operation".

Command is run on current VM host (one migration is going from), from elevated powershell as domain admin. Authentication is credssp on both servers. Migration from Hyper-V console works...

Help please
