Mounting VHDX from Cluster storage to Client

0
0

Hi

I' have a problem, I need to expand my physical machine with a VHDX located at a cluster.

I have creted a VHDX and I'am trying to mount it from the physical machine, but I get access denied.

I have gave myself all the permissions I need on security.

Somebody have an Idea ?

Also when I have tried to mount it, then I can't delete it because it is trying to mount but don't have permission.

Little bit risky to just hunt down the process and kill it in a production environment.

Somebody have an Idea?

Hyper-V Manager fails to boot from eith an image or disk drive

I have created a Hyper-V system and originally have gotten an iso file and a Windows Server 2003 CD to boot in order to create a new virtual server.  However recently I found that in either case, I cannot create a new virtual server either from a boot CD or an iso image.  I get the message "Boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device". I have made sure that none of my existing virtual machines are running when I try doing this.  I have been searching the web but have not found any references to this problem.  Patches are being maintained on the host server and any virtual machines I create from existing VHD's work fine.  I have tested the CD to insure that it will boot on another system.  Any help will be appreciated.

converged network does not work, help!

Hi,

We have 2 server with 2 physical nics (pNics) each. Both pNics areTeamedI have configured converged network with vNics (Management,LiveMigration,HeartBeat) on each server, but it does not work correctly. I get ping reply only on 2 networks (Management, LiveMigration). If disable one of Teamed physical nics (pNic) ping reply start on different 2 networks, like (HeartBeatLiveMigration). I am not getting all 3 network working on 2 pNics team, what could be wrong?

Network config:

1. Router ports were configured with trunk by network team.

2. Installed Hyper-v and Cluster roles.

3. Configured 2 NICs for network Team (Team1) using GUI. NOT added any VLANs to the team.

4. Run these PowerShell commands:

#1.
New-VMSwitch -Name VSwitch -NetAdapterName Team1 -AllowManagementOS $False -MinimumBandwidthMode Weight
#2.
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Management" -SwitchName "VSwitch"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "LiveMigration" -SwitchName "VSwitch"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "HeartBeat" -SwitchName "VSwitch"
#3.
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "HeartBeat" -Access -VlanId 11
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "LiveMigration" -Access -VlanId 12
#4.
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "LiveMigration" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 20
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "HeartBeat" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 40
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Management" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 5
#5.
New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (Management)" -IPAddress 192.168.0.2-PrefixLength "24" -DefaultGateway 192.168.0.1
Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (Management)" -ServerAddresses 192.168.0.100
New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (HeartBeat)" -IPAddress 10.10.11.2 -PrefixLength "24"
New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceAlias "vEthernet (LiveMigration)" -IPAddress 10.10.12.2 -PrefixLength "24"

I have not assign any VLAN ID on Management network to allow untagged data flow.

Thank you

"Manage checkpoints" does not appear in Hyper-V manager and checkpoints are running everyday.

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V - Lost VM01 due to hardware issue. VM01 used to store development systems. Restored VM01's VMs from Unitrends backup to VM02 & VM03 (Hyper-V cluster servers running production VMs). Noticed that the VMs that were added have been running checkpoints every day - don't know why; production VMs in the cluster do not and development VMs that were on VM01 didn't when they lived on VM1. I replaced VM01 with new server and now am trying to move the VMs back but can't get rid of the checkpoints - move fails and Export/Import keeps all the checkpoint. The option "Manage Checkpoints" is not in the action menu when I select the VM. I tried to compact and tried to convert the VMs disks but nothing changed. I don't want checkpoints automatically created and I want to get rid of all the existing checkpoints. Thoughts?

Thanks as always

How To Restore VM With All CheckPoints (no export done)

Hello,

I have the full folders and file schema of an existing virtual machine:

"Virtual Machines" (no files in the Virtual Machines folder. Only a GUID named folder )

"Virtual Hard Disks" (one .vhdx file and multiple .avhdx files)

"Snapshots" (multiple folders (GUID named) with file in them)

Any ideas how to import and have everything in place? I definitely need the whole CheckPoints chain.

Thanks.

OS X El Capitan on Windows 10 Pro (with Apple Hardware)

I have Windows 10 on my 2009 iMac Core 2 Duo, runs fine, booting into it is troublesome. Windows 10 is OK, El Capitan is a disappointment.

Looked into moving the license to my 2014 Mac Mini (i5 2-core), but the system backup failed, so moving it is out.

Now thinking about buying Windows 10 Pro, installing it under Bootcamp and running OS X as a guest OS. Wicked backwards eh? I would be able to run either OS with Bootcamp, but having them both at the same time is the goal. VMs are great.

All the information I get when I Google this combination is people wanting to run OS X on PC hardware and the license, etc. issues therein.

What I want to do does not violate Apple or Microsoft licensing (outwardly). It is Apple hardware legally running El Capitan. The Windows 10 will be licensed (purchased). The processor (4278U) does technically support the VM requirements AFAIK.

However, OS X is not listed as a guest OS for the Windows VM. Obviously, this is due to the Apple hardware license problem. I will not be violating the Apple OS license AFAIK. This should be legal and permissible in a perfect world. Apple Hardware and Microsoft software, what could go wrong?

So, can this be done or should I give up and just get the Windows Home version and depend on Bootcamp?

Thanks,

SK!

Hyper-V - Setting Description of VMs

0
0

I have recently taken over an environment with more than 300 VMs, Multiple Hyper-V Clusters and SCVMM in place apart from other Services. While looking at these VMs within SCVMM, I decided to export their information in an Excel for better reporting. This is of course easy using Get-VM Command. Unfortunately because of poor naming convention, I am unable to know the role of each machine or at least specific role when the technology is known. For e.g. SCOM has multiple servers with just 01,02,03 added to the end. Nothing defines whether they are Gateway, Database or Management Server.

I would now like to utilize PowerShell to set the Descriptions of these VMs. I already have the CSV with VM names and other information but description column is blank. If possible, I would like to update the CSV with Description and run a command loop to update all the VMs. I can make the script, i just want to know if we have CommandSet to set Description from PowerShell?

Thanks!

Best way to compact a VHDX?

Hi All

I have a file server (Server 2012 R2) running in hyper-v on a Server 2012 Host.

This VM has a 2TB dynamic disk allocated (SCSI) as its D: drive for data.

Due to some moving around and tidying up of files, this VHDX file only contains around 1.1TB of data, but the VHDX dynamically grew close to its 2TB limit. Within the host it shows 875GB free space.

I have run the optimize utility and the VHDX is no longer fragmented internally (in the VM) or on the Host.

How do I now compact the VHDX back down, closer to its actual current amount of files, so it can grow dynamically again over time?

Can this be done live, or only while offline?

Re-Enable Hyper V Replica

Hi,

I am trying to re-enable hyper v replication but I get an error:-

[Window Title]
Enable Replication

[Main Instruction]
Enabling replication failed.

[Content]
Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the Replica server for virtual machine 'EX2010'.

[Expanded Information]
Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'EX2010': Operation aborted (0x80004004). (Virtual Machine ID F80A330B-9D0A-4CFD-B6B1-B69C023B2D69)

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'EX2010' as Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the Replica server. (Virtual machine ID F80A330B-9D0A-4CFD-B6B1-B69C023B2D69)

Replication was working great however I wanted to only replicate 2 out of the 3 VHD's for this machine. I removed replication and tried to enable again but this time I deselected the vhd I didn't want and choose "use existing virtual machine on replic server as the initial copy"

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hyper-V replication error

Hi
We are having a problem enabling replication on our VMs.
we have two hyper visors each running 2012r2.
The Hyper-V manager is being run from win8.1

They are not clustered. The ports have been opened in the firewall (and for testing I have turned off the firewall).  both servers are using HTTP  kerberos and have been delegated in the AD.

If i set up a vm on hyper-A then try to enable replication to hyper-B i get the following error:
hyper-v failed to enable replication for virtual machine. The server name or address could not be resolved (0x00002EE7)
If I set up a vm on hyper-B and try to enable replication to hyper-A it works fine.
I can ping both servers from each other
I have tied the "fix" suggested here

Does any one else have a suggestion to try?

Guest VM's showing unexpected shutdown when Host is restarted.

0

When the host is rebooted and I log back in the guest VM's I am greeted with an Unexpected shutdown error.

We have 2 vm's, One is running Server 2012 and the other 2008r2. The host is running Server 2012

In Hyper-V Manager the Automatic Stop action is set to shutdown. In integration Services it shows "all services offered" and all box are checked including "Operating system shutdown".

Because of this issue I manually shutdown the VM's and verify they are off in HV manager before restarting the host. But, this pas weekend there was a power outage which shutdown the host but the VM's did not have sufficient amount of time to shutdown.

Any ideas what the issue could be?

Gen 2 Server 2012 VMs fail to start after December Windows Updates

0

I've been able to reproduce this on two separate hosts (both Win 8.1 Pro) running Gen 2 Windows Server 2012 VMs. I believe it is after the December 2012 round of updates (and I'm trying to confirm which specific one), the VMs fail to boot, indicating that applying a patch failed and it is reverting the changes -- it enters a reboot loop which I'm unable to get out of.

Has anyone else experienced this with Gen 2 Server 2012 VMs?

HI,

i am trying to edit some setting on hyper-v, i got the below error

Error (2916)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent hyper-v01.contoso.com was lost.

WinRM: URL: [http://hyper-v01.contoso.com:5985], Verb: [ENUMERATE], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/virtualization/v2/Msvm_VirtualEthernetSwitch], Filter: []

Unknown error (0x80338126)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WinRM) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTP/HTTPS traffic. Ensure that VMM server is able to communicate with hyper-v01.contoso.com over WinRM by successfully running the following command:

 winrm id –r:hyper-v01.contoso.com

This problem can also be caused by a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service crash. If the server is running Windows Server 2008 R2, ensure that KB 982293 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982293) is installed on it.

If the error persists, restart hyper-v01.contoso.com and then try the operation again. /nRefer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.

My space based on Local Hard drive space connected to RAID 5 controller

I was trying to backup to "external" NAS storage located on the same Lan, but no luck

What are my options ?

Other backup solution ?

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

0
0

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

2 out of 3 VMs will connect to domain.

My 1 Virtual Machine will not connect to my domain. Does anyone know if there would be something conflicting that?

Any possible answers would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hyper-V guest loses network connectivty

I have a server runing windows 2008 R2 SP1 with hyper-v role.  I have a windows 2008 R2 SP1 guest running that loses network connectivity.  I am getting this event message when the issue happens.  Event Id 7042

The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service was successfully sent a stop control.

The reason specified was: 0x40030011 [Operating System: Network Connectivity (Planned)]

I have disabled the power management option on the network adapter on the hyper-v server and rebooted but I am still getting network connectivity loss.  I have tried hotfixes that is supposed to fix the issue but the install says it is not for my computer.  Any suggestions on this would be helpful.

Thanks

Installing Server 2008 R2 on Hyper-V v1: drivers not found

0

I am trying to test Server 2008 R2 on an existing Server 2008 R1 64-bit box with Hyper-V v1.  However, when I begin the installation from my ISO I get the following message:

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing.  If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove is for this step."

This is AFTER the installer has booted and asked for localization information.  I have KB950050 installed on the host.

I am also seeing this in the event log:
"Device 'VMBus' in 'ACS-01-VSRV07' cannot load because it is incompatible with virtualization stack.  Server version 13 Client version 65537 (Virtual machine 54933EF0-4FF2-4C37-B777-031DE4DD4C8A)."  I read somewhere that that may be caused by the network adapter.  I have already removed it from this VM.  I have already installed Server 2008 R1 in a VM on this server.  Is there a set of drivers somewhere that I am missing?

Backing up VM from CSV, VSS writer problems ?

Hi, here is my problem.

I've set up 3 hyper-v hosts windows 2012 R2 in a Cluster.  My problem arise when i try to backup my VM's with Veeam, i can take a crash consistent backup but when i try to use the "Application Aware Processing" it fails.

Here is the error reported by Veeam :
