HI everyone

when I click start Button VM  I get the  error notification:

File copy from Host-VM or VM-VM slow

I am facing an issue with slow file copy speeds from Hyper-V running on Windows 2012 R2 host to the VMs running on that host, or from VM-VM.

If I copy a sample 7GB file from the NetApp storage CSV to the Host, I am getting 900MB/s+ and vice versa.

If I copy the same file from the hyper-V host to the desktop of the VM (all of my VMs are affected giving only 25-50MB/s speeds. One newly created 2012R2 VM does not have the issue as bad, it is getting 100-200MB/s speeds.) The same is true when copying from VM-VM.

My 2 Hyper-V hosts are connected to my Netapp E2700 array using 10Gb iSCSI directly connected. 2 controllers, each host connected to both controllers. I went for this over SAS DAS to provide future proofing by adding 10Gb switches.

Each host also has 8x 1Gb NICs (4 Intel and 4 broadcom nics) in a nic team. The broadcom NICs are on the latest firmware and drivers. I already tried disabling VMqs and reenabling but it made no difference.

As there is one newly created VM which is not experiencing the problem (at least not to the same extent, I would be inclined to say that it is a software/configuration problem on my Hyper-V cluster.

Hyper-V Virtual Switch dropping packets

Hi,

We are running a Hyper-V cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2. It is a 4 node cluster built on Dell PowerEdge M620 with QLogic QMD 8262-k CNA. We have setup a converged network design for this cluster which means host traffic is also passing through Hyper-V switch https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/dn550728.aspx#BKMK_Example

Problem is I am observing intermittent packet loss both on hosts and VMs. Due to this packet loss, cluster breaks every now and then. VMQ is disabled both on physical cards and NIC team.

I ran some monitoring and observed that dropped packets count jumps suddenly around the time when cluster complains of missed heartbeat signals (Event ID 1650). Are these number of dropped packets normal ? what other tracing can be run to see what is causing this amount of packet drop ?

Thanks,

Host NIC is disconnected but VM still shows connected status

Hello,

I have a Server 2012 Datacenter machine with 5 VMs.  There are 3 Teamed Intel NICs (6 total physical NICs).  A Virtual Switch was created and bound to one of the teams (with "Allow Management OS to share..." checked).  All the VMs are connected to this virtual switch. VMs and Host are on the same subnet, 10.0.0.xxx.

My problem is that the virtual network adapters in the VMs still show connected, even though the physical adapter is disconnected from the outside network.  The software we are using needs to see that "disconnect" or its failover (software) doesn't work.

These servers are in production, so I tried to do a mock up with a desktop running Windows 8.1 Pro.  I setup the network as close as possible to what is currently running.  In my test, I unplugged the physical NIC and both of my VMs (with same IP subnets and host too), showed disconnected.  I know its not a great test, but its what I have to work with.

Any thoughts?  Configuration issue? 2012 issue?

Any help/feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Compacting VHDX dosent work even after sdelete

Hi All,

I'm in a weird situation, The VHDX was 350GB and the actual data size is 190GB.

Even after using sdelete -s -z (from withen 2012 r2 VM) the compact function works but not as expected.

The entire process cleared 50GB while i expected to get at least 130-150GB.

Am i missing something? What else can i try?

Please help me to save that expensive SSD space.

Then am check the event logs but on error found in event logs.

Virtual Machine gets IP from DHCP but no internet

I installed a windows 7 vm in hyper-v the host has an external switch. The windows 7 vm is attached to the external switch. The host has internet but the vm does not. The vm gets the same ip configuration as the host, same gateway, same subnet mask, same dns server, pulled in by dhcp but no internet?

In the windows 7 vm in network connection sharing its says Access type: "No Internet access" the network Profile says "Unidentified network" Public Network and there is no option to change it.

VM Console Shows "CTRL+ALT+DEL" Instead of "Installing Updates" Progress

0

Host: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with Hyper-V role

Guest VM: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

When I choose to update the child VM by clicking "Install Updates and Reboot" when I connect the console to watch the VM, I don't see the expected "Installing Updates, 1 of 30" progress screen that I see on a physical Windows host.  I instead see the "Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to sign in" screen.  The console is, of course, unresponsive to CTRL+ALT+DEL because it's actually installing updates (I can confirm this because if I wait long enough, it will eventually reboot with updates installed).  But I can't watch the progress to make sure it's proceeding normally and not hanging. Interestingly, the clock continues to count forward, so it's not like it's a frozen image.  It's just not showing me the progress update.

Is this normal or did I inadvertently apply some policy that's causing this?  If it IS normal, is it a bug?  I don't remember Hyper-V 2008 R2 doing this.

error 0x8000FFF in hyper-v windows 2008 server R2

Hello,

here is my problem: when I start my VM, I receive the error "fail to restore" with ID 0x8000FFFF.

I tried to apply the fix described in this page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2960802

However, the command "Net start vmhostagent" returns the error "invalid service name".

Is it because it only works on a windows server 2012 R2?

If I execute the command "Net stop vmms", it works, but my VM still sends the error 0x8000FFFF at start.

Do you have any idea of what I could do?

Thanks!

Start and stop Virtual Machine during backup

Hi,

Recently I had an issue using windows server backup, it creates some .ahvdx files during backup but it can't merge them so I loose Datas.

I don't need a differential checkpoint when I backup cause it happens the night when nobody work.

Is it possible to make the backup without creating differencial files or eventually automatically start and stop the VM during the backup.

Regards

David

Unable to Manage Server 2012R2 Hyper V Machines from Windows 10 Workstation

Hi,

I have 2 HyperV Servers - both running Server 2012R2.

I want to be able to connect HyperV Manager from my laptop to both servers and im unable to.

Both servers and my laptop are all on the same domain and same subnet.

It throws the error:

Check that the Virtual Machine Management Service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server. You do not have the required permission to complete this task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer.

Now my daily account is a Standard Domain Account with local admin priviledges on my laptop.

I have:

1. Added my standard domain account to the HyperV Remote Administrators Group on both servers

2. Run the hvremote /add:domain\account comand

3. Enabled remote management firewall rules. / Turned firewalls off both sides

4. Added standard domain user to Administrator Role in Authorization Manager

Still unable to connect to either server though.

Anybody steer me towards a solution?

Thanks

Hyper-V wont backup on one VM

Host Server w/Shared NIC Connection Problem

0
0

HP ML350G9 Server 2012R2 with 2 hosted VMs; uptime 8 months.

To-date we have teamed NICs in the host OS and then assigned them to vSwitches.

In the past several days connectivity with one of the VMs on this server has become intermittent - more down than up. This seems to have started after applying MS updates and the latest HP hardware service pack three days ago.

We have isolated the problem to the NIC/MAC that is being shared with the management OS.  Once disconnected from the data switch the connection remains stable.

TEAM1:  E1 + E2

vEthernet (TEAM1) - same MAC as E2

TEAM2: E3 + E4

With E2 disconnected communications are fine. When connected, eventually all of the lights on the unmanaged data switch go solid and communications are lost.

I know that MS recommends a separate NIC for the management OS, but I believe this is more from a performance standpoint.

I have researched some articles that deal with disabling TCP Checksum Offload on the NIC.  Others say to leave these settings alone.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks >> Joe

Server 2008 R2 VM to Server 2012 R2 Licensing

I have a 2008 R2 Standard machine, running two 2008 R2 Standard VM's in Hyper-V. I'd like to copy and import these VM's to a new 2012 box. Can I run these VM's in server core, or do I need the full 2012 R2 Standard license that provides for the 2 guest VM's, even though they've already been licensed via the 2008 R2 software we own? It is worth noting that I inherited this server and am unsure if the original licenses were volume or OEM (Dell).

Thanks for any direction you can provide.

Issue with VM on hyper-v during Windows Server Backup

Hi everybody,

I don't know why but last night our VM sql server turning off.

It seems it happens during the backup (windows server Backup)

Today I try to start him but it didn't work, it say impossible to open miniserv_A1A634F3-1F98-4154-8490-A4E6F9705403.avhdx the original virtual disk is miniserv.vhd

So I create a new VM and give it the original miniserv.vhd disk, it start but a lot of database where lost :(

Somebody can help me ? What happen ? can I restore the lost database ?

Thanks

David

Does the Hyper-V Virtual Switch support IGMP snooping (Multicast)?

0

I've noticed that all IGMP traffic destined for a specific guest VM is sent to all VMs connected to the same virtual switch. It's as if it were acting like a hub when it comes to IGMP traffic.

If it does support IGMP, how can I go about to configure it? there seems to be a lack of information regarding the topic.

VM falls back to startup memory after some time when Dynamic Memory is enabled event id 19548

Hello All,

We have multiple Server 2008R2 VM's on different Server 2012R2 hosts that have the following problem.

VM Dynamic Memory enabled
Startup 2048Mb
Minimal 1024Mb
Maximum 10240Mb

VM starts up and allocates memory, Memory demand is ok and Memory status also. Sometimes after a reboot the Assigned memory is 2048Mb, the Memory demand and Memory status columns are empty (hyper-v manager), dynamic memory is still enabled according to the column and inside the VM the maximum memory is 2048Mb. On the host I get the following event:

Event id 19548

The dynamic memory balancer could not add memory to the virtual machine 'vm01' because its configured maximum has been reached (Virtual machine ID 5AC8B7DE-0848-49E2-AD0B-7D2C1A56803D).

There is plenty of RAM available on the host to cover twice the maximum configured RAM. All the VM's and Hosts have the latest updates, all the integration services are running inside the VM and there is no message in the event log inside the VM. I can't figure out why this event id is generated because there is more than enough RAM. I looked in several event logs on the Host and inside the VM but the only thing I can find is the one above (that's related to this problem I guess). Any help? for now the workaround is to reboot the server and watch what it does.

Peter

Shared Storage with Fiber Channel

I am trying to create a Hyper-V cluster.   I see tons of various posts and step by steps for setting up hyper-v and server clusters etc..   but they all start AFTER the shared storage part is setup.

I have 4 2012R2 servers that I will be using for this.   Each on as 2 fiber channels that are connected to a SAN.  I've never used Fiber before.   On 3 of the machines when I open "Server Manager/File and storage services/Volumes/Disks" it shows 9 disks (#8 is the local drive on teh server)  the disk numbers 0-7 have a status of 'unknown', capacity of 0, etc, etc..   it does show the bus type of Fiber Channel, and the Name of "DGC LUNZ SCSI Disk Device"

While on the 4th server (going to the same location in Server Manager)

It only has 4 items that says it's unknown, and 1 that says online.  It shows the capacity of what I expected, bus type:fiber channel and the name of "DGC Raid 5 SCSI Disk Device"  and I was able to run through the storage pool wizard and Create an H drive with it.   Yet when I then go to 'Storage pools', it shows nothing.

Basiclly, I'm really lost (as if you couldn't tell already)

Any ideas why my 3 other servers don't read the storage device like the one server does?   I have them all setup the same, and they all have the same Fiber Card (QLogic)

Pagefile for Terminalserver VM

So I have a few Terminalservers as Virtual Machines in Hyper-V. RDSH and Hyper-V Host are both Win 2012 R2.

Currently I have configured the VMs to use fixed RAM (40GB) and now Im wondering what the best setting for the pagefile would be.

Ive got several advices, ranging from non at all to fixed size of 8GB to double the amount of RAM.

So im a bit confused..

idealy less would be better so i dont have to use that much Space on my storage.

What would be the prefered setting?
