Hello Everyone,

Is there a tutorial or something available to help me from installation to configuration of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with 2 physical nics per server. My Issue is I have 2 Old Dell Servers w/nic1 and nic2. Every tutorial I have seen calls for 3 nics. So I am confused as to how to properly configure these servers. I am not an ace on Networking although I do understand the basics and do understand subnets and such. I would also like to add my QNAP TS412 to the mix and it also has 2 nics. It would be the iSCSI storage for this configuration.

My main network is 192.168.xxx.xxx, my router is functioning as the DHCP server for this network.

The other nic I had planned on using for management and storage communication if that is possible (Mind you this is a home lab) on 10.xxx.xxx.xxx network.

I have 2 Switches involved on this configuration as well.

Eventually I would like to cluster these, but I already know how to do Live Migration to non Clustered Hyper V Servers, So if anyone could help me or point me to a step by step I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you,

Michael

CSV redirection and metadata confusion

$

Hello,

I’ve build a 2012R2 Hyper-V cluster.  Each host has 6 10Gbps NICs.  I’ve created two teams,

  • One team for Live Migration
  • One team for Virtual machines with a vSwitch on top.
  • The other two NICS are used for ISCSI A and B

On the team used for virtual machine traffic, I’ve created two parent OS vNics, one vNic for host management and another for cluster Comms\CSV traffic.

The cluster Comms vNic has been set with the lowest metric.

Now, this is where I get confused.  I created a separate team for Live Migration so that this NIC team remains RSS capable and can therefore take advantage of SMB multichannel for fast live migrations.

However, I’ve been reading (here http://blogs.technet.com/b/cedward/archive/2013/11/06/windows-server-2012-smb-multichannel-and-csv-redirected-traffic-caveats.aspx) that CSVredirected traffic will use the NIC\team where SMB multichannel is capable. My concern is that is this only for CSV redirected traffic or also for CSV metadata operations?

So my main questions are:

Does CSV metadata and CSV redirected traffic follow the same rules? So in this case will CSV metadata traffic flow over the same team used by live migration, or will it use my cluster comms Nic that’s set with the lowest metric?

Should I limit the amount of bandwidth used by Live Migration so that CSV redirected traffic isn’t starved when live migrations take place? (https://blog.workinghardinit.work/2013/09/03/preventing-live-migration-over-smb-starving-csv-traffic-in-windows-server-2012-r2-with-set-smbbandwidthlimit/)

Thanks loads in advance

FCM Live Migration slow one way

Two node 2012 R2 cluster, running on two identical Dell PE R720.

Live migration from Server B --> Server A happens in a flash 3% --> 52% --> 60% --> done

Live migration from Server A --> Server B takes rather long 3% --> 52% --> than it trickles down by 1% for minutes

Any idea what to try to do with it, so the direction of the Live Migration behaves in same quick way (as it can obviously)

VM Console Shows "CTRL+ALT+DEL" Instead of "Installing Updates" Progress

Host: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with Hyper-V role

Guest VM: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

When I choose to update the child VM by clicking "Install Updates and Reboot" when I connect the console to watch the VM, I don't see the expected "Installing Updates, 1 of 30" progress screen that I see on a physical Windows host.  I instead see the "Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to sign in" screen.  The console is, of course, unresponsive to CTRL+ALT+DEL because it's actually installing updates (I can confirm this because if I wait long enough, it will eventually reboot with updates installed).  But I can't watch the progress to make sure it's proceeding normally and not hanging. Interestingly, the clock continues to count forward, so it's not like it's a frozen image.  It's just not showing me the progress update.

Is this normal or did I inadvertently apply some policy that's causing this?  If it IS normal, is it a bug?  I don't remember Hyper-V 2008 R2 doing this.

Hyper-V Replication & Large Machine Observations

Hi All,

I have Oracle Unbreakable Linux 6.5 which runs Oracle ERP application & Database it has three VHDs 80 GB , 600 GB and 120 GB on daily basis it creates RMAN backup approx 32 GB which stores on 120 GB VHD.This VM has more READ operations and around 1 MB / 1 Mins Write Operation other than Backup.

I have enable Hyper-V Replication on this machine with 60 Sec Cycle Exclude 120 GB VHD where RMAN data places but i have found that replication is not going on normal.

I can see that hyper-V replication fully utilizing 4 MB to 5 MB.

My Question :

1.If i excluded 120 GB VHD and i have very little write operations on replicating drives so why replication is not normal

2.Is read operations have impact on replication

Add memory to VM in HyperV "Without shutting down machine. "

Hi All,

I am trying to Add Memory to the VM using powershell, I would like to know if there is any way to add memory without shutting down the server.

The powershell Example given in technet is as below.

PS C:\> Stop-VM -Name TestVM -Passthru | Set-VM -ProcessorCount 2 -DynamicMemory -MemoryMaximumBytes 2GB -Passthru | Start-VM

I would like to do this activity without rebooting the server. Pls let me know if this is possible.

Regards.

VHDX file corrupted

Hi guys,Really need your help on this one.

I have a customer that uses Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 RTM.

The earlier IT guy (who was fired today) have been running the whole setup on dynamic disks.

One of the disks have 3,5 TB of data, and is therefore a VHDX file.
Today because of the heat the RAID controller reset, and that sadly corrupted the VHDX file.
Almost all of the VM's are dead, but this VHDX file holds ALL of the company data - such as dokuments, pictures, contracts, profiles, homedirs, and so on (you probably get the picture).
To top it all, the (now fired) IT guy didn't really check on the backup jobs - so no backup at all.

This company really needs help. I tried Bing'ing and Googling everything but no help as it is a VHDX and not a VHD file.

Whenever I try to start the machine, all I get is "Attachment 'D:\VHDs\FILESERVER1.vhdx' failed to open because of error: 'The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.'."

I tried attaching it in disk manager with no luck (it will not open). I read that extending the size with VHDResize could uncorrupt the drive could help (but sadly it does not support VHDX format).

I really need your help here. Please join in with every crazy idea available.. These guys really need help.

The guy that comes up with a solution will not only recieve the credit, but I personally promise you an ice cold beer if you ever get to Denmark..

Or if you live in a country that I will ever visit, I will buy you one in your town.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

I cannot use Get-VMHost command to get LogicalProcessorCount from remote Hyper-V node server.

Hi

I use Hyper-V Microsoft Server 2012R2 cluster with two nodes (TTOS2, TTOS3) with full updates.

I run these command on Ttos2 node:

$a=(Get-VMHost -ComputerName ttos2).LogicalProcessorCount

I got right value eq 8.

When I run this command

$b=(Get-VMHost -ComputerName ttos3).LogicalProcessorCount

$b - is empty

Get-VMHost cannot get value of LogicalProcessorCount from remote server. Why? Is it problem with my server or this is global behaviour of this command?

And furthermore:

ttos2 - local server

Get-VMHost -ComputerName ttos2 | fl *

Diff between MaximumMemory and Startup Memory

$

Hi Experts,

I have a quick question, Here in the Pic Below Start up Memory is 4096 MB. And does that mean the machine will consume 1048576MB of Memory ** If Required.  If yes then what do we mean by Set-VM VMname -MemoryMB $newMemoryMB.

If I add additional Memory it increases the start up memory. If the above statement is true ** then I would be required to setMaximumMemory and Startup Memory both to a same level. If yes is it possible to do without reboot.

Server 2012 Host, 2012 R2 VM, backup very slow

$

I have a Dell R720xd server with a handful of VM's running on it.

Our primary file server has just been migrated onto it and I'm seeing very slow backups.

We use BackupExec 15 running in a VM to a LTO5 tape drive(Using Starwind to share it as iSCSI to BE) and have been getting < 2,000MB/min backup.

Previously (before the last file server was virtualized) we were achieving easily 2,500MB/min speed while backing up the physical server. This is with the same software and hardware confguration for BackupExec etc.

While backing up I can see the Disk Response Time getting very high in the FS VM, well over 100ms.

Although in the Host the Disk Response Time is low.

One thing I may try is switching off deduplication of the drive in the VM and re-expanding it. I have read some comments about poor performance in that configuration.

I did try backup to Disk, speeds were very similar, implying the bottleneck is definitely with the VM. Test backups from a different VM on a different VM give me over 4,400MB/min, so the backend config of BackupExec and Tape drive must be correct.

It seems to be all VM's on this Host that are slow for backup. I am using the Agent in the VM, not the Hyper-V agent as I want to be able to granualy restore individual files without restoring the VHDX file first.

The Host has > 50% memory free and processor < 10% utilised.

Any other ideas on how I can find the bottleneck in my backups?

"Manage checkpoints" does not appear in Hyper-V manager and checkpoints are running everyday.

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V - Lost VM01 due to hardware issue. VM01 used to store development systems. Restored VM01's VMs from Unitrends backup to VM02 & VM03 (Hyper-V cluster servers running production VMs). Noticed that the VMs that were added have been running checkpoints every day - don't know why; production VMs in the cluster do not and development VMs that were on VM01 didn't when they lived on VM1. I replaced VM01 with new server and now am trying to move the VMs back but can't get rid of the checkpoints - move fails and Export/Import keeps all the checkpoint. The option "Manage Checkpoints" is not in the action menu when I select the VM. I tried to compact and tried to convert the VMs disks but nothing changed. I don't want checkpoints automatically created and I want to get rid of all the existing checkpoints. Thoughts?

Thanks as always

Hyper-v Checkpoint disk Space...

$

Hello,

I need help with running out of room issue and also understanding with checkpoints.  I am currently running Hyper-V Bear and hosting 2 VM's.  The host disk is running out of space so the VM's keep pausing-critical which I get.  Right Now I am trying to understand a few things.  The VM I am currently looking at has 3 checkpoints, the parent and then 2 others.

The parent is a win 7 build the first checkpoint, The second checkpoint is the win 10 upgrade, The third is the checkpoint with all the updates.

The disk is dynamic not fixed. the vhdx file is 87gb and the checkpoints avhdx files: CHKP1-100gb, CHKP2-165gb(added space to the c drive inside the vm) and CHKP-3 is 30GB

1.  If I merge the Checkpoints will it free up space by over writing or will it just combine.

2. I try to remove the first checkpoint but then the VM did not work. I am pretty sure it's because it part of the tree but I taught that by creating a new checkpoint would carry over all info so the previous checkpoint would only be needed for rollbacks. Was I wrong.

3.  The last checkpoint is the state I want to keep so how do I do so and get rid of the others without affecting the VM itself.

4.  I am able to add more space to the disk but wanted to learn how to also clean up VM. I also needed to understand how the space works because there is not alot of data stored on the VM.  The C drive is about 165 GB now and I am only using about 87gb so where is all the data coming from that is eating up the host disk?

5. Also in regards to a recycle bin, when I delete a fill is it stored somewhere that I can't see that may be eating up my disk space?

Thanks for any insight that can be provided....

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core) Hangs During Reboot

$

I am running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core) and 3 VMs - Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2, Windows 10, and a Linux VM (Red Hat derivative).  This had been working fine for many months.

I recently recofigured the hard drives on my Hyper-V server and then re-installed the 3 VMs.  Since doing that I've found that my Hyper-V server hangs any time I try and reboot the system.

As far as I can tell all 3 VMs have shut down as none of them are responding to PINGs.  After waiting for quite some time I eventually just power off the physical machine and then reboot.

This is not very convenient for remote management of the server.  Plus I am concerned that a hard reboot like this will eventually corrupt something in one of my VMs.

So far I've not been able to locate any solution for this problem.  My Hyper-V server has all the available maintenance installed (as well as all 3 VMs having all available maintenance installed).

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Hyper-V host Network location? Network design.

$

Invested in a Ubiquiti 5 ports POE router yesterday, for home usage. I'm far from a network design/security expert. I wonder if below design is something that would work, if not, what can I do better? I have no Firewall rules yet, I'm curious about the design itself.

The The Hyper-V host/cluster is placed in the INFRA network. Only reason I have a separated wifi network is that I power it via POE, might plug it into the LAN switch instead to save a port and get them on the same broadcast domain.

xml data bad in HyperV-Snapshot-folder after moving Virtual Harddisk File

Hi,

I'm new to Hyper-V and in my first week I had to move the Virtual harddisk File to a new location (bigger harddisk).

The VM is working, but the backup isn't anymore. Probably I moved it the wrong way.

On the server there is Veeam backup and Restore. It points to the VM I want to backup. It still is, I didn't need to change anything in Veeam Backup after the move of the file. But Veeam seems to look what to backup via a xml located in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Snapshots.  The xml there, contains wrong paths to eg. snapshots that does not exists anymore. VeeAm Backup does not find the files that are mentioned in the XML and stops.

The C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Snapshots contains 2 XML files with wrong data and 2 empty folders.

My question: Is it possible to rebuild the XML files and folders in the Snapshot folder? Or is it save to delete them?

Hello folks, I am currently trying to simulate varying problems in a virtual environment  such as start up failures so that I can give my students more variety in what I can expose them to. As I am new to Hyper V I am here asking if this is possible or if It would be best to stick to failing components in the real world? I appreciate any help on this topic!

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Export - uses VSS?

$

0

Hello!

This seems like such a simple question and yet I just can't seem to find a definitive answer: When doing a VM Export in Windows 2012 R2, does Hyper-V use VSS in the guest when creating the exported VM?  In other words would the Exported VM be in a application-consistent state?  For example if the VM was running SQL Server would the exported VM be in a state where the SQL Server databases were consistent?

Or doesn't the VM Export use VSS in the guest to make an application-consistent VM?

I'd certainly appreciate any answers that anyone has...

Thanks so much!  Dave

Hard drive read/write twice as slow on guest

Hi,

So I'm running Server 2012 R2 with only Hyper-V. Its installed on a 512Gb 6 gb/s hdd and runs smoothly nothing else installed on that drive. I then have 4 PCIe SSD cards in RAID5 where I install all my guest operating systems on. When I do a read/write test on the server I get about 1000mb/s write and 4000mb/s read. All is good and I'm happy until I do a read write test on the guests. For some reason it only writes 400mb/s and reads at 2000mb/s. It seems as if I have lost more than half the speed and I cant figure out where I'm going wrong, any help would be much appreciated.  I've attached some screen shots just in case.
