can not bring VM online

$

Hi all,

Windows 2008 R2 enterprise with hyper-v role host

due to a physical host's unexpectly shut down,

two VMs got the "Saved-Critical" state.  I tried to start them and got the message "failed to restore virtual machine state."

Is there a way to bring them on? or I have to recreate them?

Thank you.

Server 2012 Hyper-V live migration speed horrible on 10Gbit

$

On my freshly installed Server 2012 systems, I have have two 10Gbit nics. When I do a file copy between these two systems, I get up to 400MB/s, which is reasonable considering these are budget systems. These systems are pretty vanilla, no strange things done & nothing installed other than Mallanox drivers& roles/features/patches.

I have configured Hyper-V to use these nics by making sure the live migration goes over their IP subnet. (settings, live migrations, Use these IP addresses...).

When I do a live migration & start the resource manager to check performance, I see that indeed the traffic goes over the Mellanox Infinion 10Gbit nics, but is amazingly slow; it doesn't even get to 500Mbit/s. Theoretically I can throw out the 10Gbit nics, as 1Gbit/s is not even reached!

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas what might be causing this or how to fix it?

thanks.

Disable Write Caching on a Virtual HD ATA Device

Hi!

We have a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster. The VHDX files is stored on a FC connected EVA P6300 SAN.

When I try to disable Write Cache on the disk I get an error saying "Windows could not change the write-caching setting for the device. Your device might not support the feature or changing the setting". This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 guest.

On the guests running on a VMware ESX(i) x.x installation, this is not an issue. The guest is stored on the same SAN, but on other Vdisks of course.

Guest VM additions is version 6.2.9200.16384

Update: Write Cache is disabled on the storage connected to the Hyper-V host.

Anyone?

Can't create a virtual network, they keep disappearing...

I'm using Server 2k8 R2 and am trying to learn about Hyper-V.

If I go into Virtual Network Manager, I can add a new External, Internal, or Private network. However after I click OK, and then go back into Virtual Network Manager, they are gone!

Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone seen this before?

Thank!

Server 2012 Hyper-V no SCSI controller support

$

I would like to know if there is any solution in the world that would allow SCSI controller on windows XP 32bit VM using the new Hyper-V in Server 2012. I know that MS does not want us to boot off SCSI, which has been argued time and time again. But I also want to have more then 3 drives ( not including the Optical ) to use in the VM. Its not about size, its about the available volumes to the machine. In VMware, which is the product they are attempting to compete with this is not even a contention on the paid for or free versions. The true purpose of virtualization is hardware consolidation and usage/testing of various environments prior to implementation especial legacy support OS's. Can anyone tell me if there is a workaround or solution so that I can get the VM to recognize more then 4 VHD's simotaniously. Does anyone else feel my pain in trying to rollout Server 2012 as a prouduction solution?

Ubuntu 12.10 GPT partition >2TB not working

Hi!

Hyper-V on 2012.

I've got a Ubuntu, 12.10, server installation which i try to add some storage to. I've created 64GB harddrive (VHDX) as the 1st drive. And then a 2nd drive 4TB (VHDX). Thin.prov on both.

Creating and formating: Using gdisk, parted or gparted (livecd) on ubuntu I'm not able to partition, GPT, and initiate a filesystem on the the large VHDX.

Is there a problem with Hyper-V 2012 and drives (VHDX) >2TB when used by guests?

Edit: :) Typo in title... Ubunut...

Hello,

We have a Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Ed. Hyper-V server running Windows Server 2012 Std. VMs.  We have a MAK license key for the Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Ed.  When I attempt to Activate the Windows Server 2012 Std. VMs, it fails.  I thought that Datacenter Ed. allows licensing for unlimited Windows VMs?  Doug

Problems with Internet/networking with Server 2012 and Hyper-V

$

Here's my setup:

I have a wireless adapter connected to my host server which gives me Internet access.

I have one desktop connected to my host server via Ethernet, primarily for Remote Desktop access (from desktop to server, not vice versa).

It is simple to share Internet between host and desktop via ICS. Remote Desktop Connection works well too.

However, I am having trouble when introducing this next variable:

I have created a Debian VM in Hyper-V on my server, which I would like to access the Internet and use as a web host. I have created the "Internal Virtual Switch" and assigned it to the VM as legacy. For whatever reason, it will not let me assign the wireless adapter as an External Virtual Switch. I can only access the Internet on my VM if I use ICS on the wireless adapter and assign it to the Virtual Switch (Internal). This is an issue because it no longer shares Internet with my Ethernet port which connects to my desktop. I want to be able to access internet on all three machines-- desktop, server, and VM.

I have tried bridging but doing so then causes inability of connecting to the server from my desktop via Remote Desktop Connection (can't find host on network).

Any ideas? I have asked the question elsewhere and someone mentioned static IP address. My wireless internet is dynamic IP.

Edit: Another issue, I am also getting the "Mouse not captured in Desktop Session" error when connecting to the server's VM via my desktops connection. "Enable HAL" is not listed in Msconfig on Server 2012.

Blue Screen on HyperV VMs

Hi,

We are running a HyperV Cluster and there are VMs for Windows 2003 R2 Servers and Windows 2008 R2 Servers.

I often get this blue screen on Windows 2003 R2 Server VMs and the only option i have is to stop and start, please suggest.

This happens only with Win2003 Servers.

Hyper-V Cluster 'STATUS_CONNECTION_DISCONNECTED(c000020c'

$

Hello,

I have a three node Hyper-V Cluster setup in Node majority setting. There are two clustered shared volumes fibre attached shared amongst all three servers. All virtual machines reside on those two volumes. This started out as a two node cluster, but we recently added a third node.

Two of the three nodes is showing the error below:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume2' ('Cluster Disk 2') is no longer available on this node because of 'STATUS_CONNECTION_DISCONNECTED(c000020c)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Its event ID 5120

Seems to happen more often on one of them than the other. No other error messages around the time this is going on. It’s happening to both volumes but only on two of the three Nodes. As you see from the error message above is that one of the volumes its complaining about is Volume2. Volume 2 is currently owned by the node which is reporting the error. But one of the other nodes is complaing about this volume as well as the other volume every once and a while.

The virtual machines don't seem to be affected, but obviously something is not right. I checked to see when this began, and it seems like its been going on for many months even before the third node was added. It happens on random dates and random times, sometimes multiple times a day and at different times from the two nodes reporting the issue.

All the Nodes use the same 2 independent MDS Fibre switches for their connections. we pulled logs from the switches and didn't see anything that refers to issues with the ports.

My search only resulted in Logical Disk Monitor issues, but I'm not seeing anywhere in the event viewer showing that this is scanning the drive anytime around when the problem occurs. Also the results I found related to Logical Disk Monitor seem to be with large iSCSI volumes. These are 1 TB Fibre Volumes.

All cluster firewall rules are enabled and configured correctly.

Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Can't delete a virtual machine

 Hi,

THis is the first time I've come across this error and am not sure what to do, when I right click a virtual machine in hyper-v manager and click delete it says... "An error occurred while attempting to delete the selected virtual machine(s).  You might not have permission to perform this task."

I know I have permission because I can delete others ( I am domain/enterprise admin)

Is there a "backdoor" way to delete it, or what can I do?

Thanks

Why aren't Turn Off or Reset absolute actions from the Hyper-V Manager?

After receiving error messages, I have had to stop the Hyper-V services several times to kill hung VM's and twice had to reboot the host server itself.

Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Machine Management Service stops for no apparent reason

$

Starting initial testing for migration to Hyper-V 2012 (or is it referred to as v3.0?). Essentially out of the box install of Server 2012 Data Center RTM (Full), with Hyper-V role enabled. The day after the initial setup. I opened the Hyper-V console from a remote computer to start testing and was unable to connect to the Hyper-V Management Service. Logging in to the server directly I see that the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management services has stopped (Kudos MS for making that so easy to see!). After spending awhile in the event log and finding no reason (I see the service stop but no errors associated with it) I chalk it up to a fluke of the previous days initial install. Next day same thing. Except two other services have also stopped. More event log research but no trail to follow. It’s as if the service is being commanded by something to stop?? The only possible connection I see is ConfigMgr 2012 client activity near the same time frame as the service stopping.

Obviously I can’t move forward with further testing and migration until I sort this out. Sure I can set the services to restart but not the ideal option.

Any ideas? Or is 2012 too new to consider for production? I’ve included a couple of event log entries and a list of the services that get stopped.

Thanks, Ken
