Hyper-V on Windows 10
How to get Virtual machine OS name using powershell?
Hi
I use Failover cluster manager console to manage vm's. In this mmc i can check what is the name of OS (field "Operating system:" in this console) for example: Windows XP, Ubuntu,...
How to get this a piece of Information using powershell?

Paragon backup files
Got a .pvhd file, a number of .p01, .p02...p09, a .pbe and a .pfi file
Anyone knows if it is possible to convert to VHD or VHDX ?
(And how to do so)
Manually Merged Checkpoints and Starting a VM afterwards
Good morning,
I recently needed to manually merge a checkpoint into the parent for about 5 VHDXs. The merge completed successfully. There one checkpoint file for each of the 5 virtual drives.
I backed up the original data (avhdxs and vhdxs to another location before proceeding with the merge).
After the successful merge, I updated the virtual machine by pointing it away from the avhdx files and to the vhdx files and attempted to apply the changes.
When trying to apply the changes, I receive the following message:
What should I do at this point?

Unable to start Hyper-V VM - Need to reconnect AVDX to its parent ignoring ID mismatch
Hello,
By mistake I tried to shrink my virtual machine's HD when it had a Snapshot, causing the following error when a try to start the VM:
"An error occurred while attempting to start the selected VM. The operation failed with error code 32791"
According my research it is necessary to reconnect my AVDX to its parent ignoring ID mismatch. I have looked in Hyper-v and haven't found this option.
Could anyone help me to do this?
Regards,
Emídio

New-VMSwitch Invalid handle (0x80070006)
Hi.
I have problem with create vmswitch on hyper-V on windows 10.
I have novirtualswitches
When i try create new one using hyper-v manager (i try run as normal, and run as administrator), or powershell ( New-VMSwitch -Name "vNIC1" -AllowManagementOS $true -NetAdapterName"Wi-Fi")I getting an error :
New-VMSwitch : Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch.
Switch create failed, name = '97B3FECD-1405-473A-A1F3-B47EAC2E3C4C', friendly name = 'vNIC355': I
nvalid handle (0x80070006).
I've triedto reinstall network drivers, reinstal hyper-v role, use wire, and wireless NIC, create external, private or internal vswitch. All times i got this error or sometimes i got :

Virtual Network issue
Hi have a Hyper-V server that has 3 VM's on it,
one has 2 virtual Nic's, one is an internal network for the VM's and the other is an external connection to the outside world.
the other 2 have one Nic each that connects to the main VM, the internal network works fine.
I am trying to get the other 2 VM's access to the outside world, I have DNS and Routing and remote access installed on the main VM and LAN routing is enabled. The other 2 have the DNS and default Gateway set to the IP of the main VM.
if i try to ping and external address like google.co.uk I get an IP Back but then it says request time out .
any idea what I have missed?

Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Blue screen
Hi folks, I wonder if someone has ever seen this problem before:
My DC, which is a hyper-v 2008 R2 server keeps blue screening the instance I restart a service for a certain piece of software developed by Capita. If I disable the service and stop the software running, the server runs fine.
The blue screen error I'm getting is as follows:
Stop 0x0000001E, 0x0000000000, 0x0000000000, 0x0000000000, 0x0000000000
I may not have got enough zeros in each one!

VM Licensing Questions on File Over Cluster (Hyper-V)
Hi,
Some enquires on license on VM. I know per windows 2012 R2 Standard give 2 VMs.
1.) 2 x Dell Host Svr (OEM Windows 2012 R2 Standard)
2.) Node A - Physical SVR 1 , Node B - Physical SVR 2
3.) File Over Cluster with 2 Nodes A/B
4.) 4 Hyper-V VM running, 2 on Node A 2 on Node B. 4VMs are windows activated.
Questions.
- If my 2 VM from Node A was down is was swing over to Node B, so Node B running 4 VMs, by right should i have addtional VM license to cover the Physical Svr 2 since Node B is running 4VM? or Microsoft don't care as long as the VM is licensed i can run as many as i want in the Hyper-V?
Unable to remove Virtual Switch
I changed our networking configuration on our Hyper-V cluster built on 2012 R2. However, I now need to remove the old switch but when I try to do so I get the following error message:
"Error applying virtual switch property changes. failed while removing virtual Ethernet switch. the virtual switch 'switch' canot be deleted because it is being used by ruing virtual machines or assigned to child pools."
I have checked all of the VMs running on the cluster and not a single one is connected to this switch anymore, I also have removed any checkpoints that I could find.
Is there a way to find what is still connected to this switch or is there another way of removing it?
Cannot connect more than 4 VMs at a time
Hello,
I have a hyper-v server with 5 VMs on it. There are two network ports, and I have configured one dedicated to the hyper-v host and 1 for the virtual switch that is not shared with the host. All of the VMs can talk with eachother, but one of them cannot connect to anything outside the hypervisor including the host. I've re-configured the connections in a variety of ways with the same results. The odd thing is that if I shut down one of the VMs, the one that wasn't connected will connect. While it is down, it can't get an IP address on DHCP, and given a static IP, it can't ping out to other physical machines or the internet. I've tried disabling the VMQ, and I've updated all drivers and firmware. They are intel NICs on an HP server. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Andy
Storage space Optimization
Hi,
I have configured Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v in 12 VM host. there VM hosts are stored in SAN Storage.
whenever I have free the space in any of one VM, if not reflected in Storage end ( Its not free space getting in storage End)
Some Windows Guests not demanding more memory
Scenario
I have a 3 Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts which is participating in a cluster, all of the virtual machines are hosted on CSV's. We also use Dynamic Memory for most of the servers
We do regular reboots every week for our virtual machines, but we've found that sometimes, a virtual guest will suddenly stop requesting additional memory. At the time of writing, I have identified 10 machines - on different hosts, and even different clusters which are exhibiting this behaviour. They're also running OS's ranging from Windows 7 to Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012.
I have selected one to demonstrate below.
Here, you can see the virtual machine is configured to use Dynamic Memory
and here, you can see that it's not actually demanding more than the start memory, despite the fact that I've overloaded the servers virtual memory by using MSPAINT.
Workaround
Rebooting the virtual machine does not resolve the issue, but live migrating the virtual machine from the host it is on to another host suddenly allows it to demand more memory. One can then live-migrate it back to the original host and the problem
is no longer there.
Troubleshooting
We have performed the following troubleshooting steps:
- Verified that the Integration Services are up-to-date (currently running 6.3.9600.16384)
- Verified that the virtual server has up-to-date Windows Updates
- Checked the Hyper-V-Worker\Admin event log on the current host - no errors pertaining to this VM.
- Verified that the Hyper-V host has sufficient RAM (currently only using 542 out of 768 GB)
- Checked the System event log on the virtual machine - nothing out of the ordinary to report.
- Verified that all services which start with the word "Hyper-V" on the guest machine is running.
Using the following command, I can easily identify which machines are affected (this command applies to SCVMM only):
Get-SCVirtualMachine | where {$_.DynamicMemoryEnabled -eq $true -and $_.DynamicMemoryDemandMB -eq $_.Memory} | ft Name,HostName,OperatingSystem,Memory,DynamicMemoryDemandMB,DynamicMemoryMinimumMB,DynamicMemoryMaximumMB
I do not know any diagnostic program which can give me more information regarding the memory status of a server - specifically one which can tell me more information about Memory demand, and why it's not working.
Considering that the problem is resolved when I live migrate the affected machine, it would suggest that the issue is with the host, but as live migrating it back no longer exhibits the issue - that seems to negate that theory. Additionally, the other 103 virtual machines which run on this host seem to not show this issue.
It's almost as if the machine is being ran with static memory, and Hyper-V doesn't realise it's dynamic, but the moment it's live migrated, it suddenly realises this and enables dynamic memory.
Any thoughts?
Questions regarding CSV and Heartbeat Network
So, I have a Hyper V Cluster.
The recommandations I followed suggested to have multiple vNICs for the Host Servers for different purposes. So I have one for each: Management, Live Migration, CSV and Heartbeat. Storage is trough FC.
Now, Management NIC is obvious, its the only NIC that has an IP from our range, for all other vNICs im using 10.0.x.x IPs.
LiveMig, obvious as well, because it can be arranged through failover cluster manager.
But i dont understand how I configure CSV and Heartbeat Traffic to use specific NICs?
How can I do this?
Integrations services error 4000 - integration services does not match the expected version
I have a 2 node high availability cluster built on 2012r2 DataCentre. One VM continually fails to backup and gives the event log error
"Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor failed to connect to virtual machine 'QuadPro' because the version does not match the version expected by Hyper-V (Virtual machine ID 094B6B22-BBED-4D0B-8E47-D8D4D0D3F986). Framework version: Negotiated (0.0) - Expected (3.0); Message version: Negotiated (0.0) - Expected (5.0). To fix this problem, you must upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu."
When I do the suggested action I get a message stating
"The computer is already running the current version of integration services (version 6.3.9600.16384)".
This VM was built through the failover management console under 2012r2. The VM in question is a 2008r2 standard server running a single database application.
Please advise.

Hyper-v system files
Hi all,
We had a crypto outbreak - the infection was ransom.dmalocker.
Some user managed to run this on the hyper-v host and infect the hyper-v host.
This has caused major issues of course.
The VM XML files are encrypted and locked.
But I think other important hyper-v system files might be locked. I think this because when I send the ctrl - al - del key command via the hyper-v console it see an error saying the key signal cannot be send, I assume this is relating to integration services, I have a feeling this also needs restoring from backup but not sure. The exact error is "could not send keys to virtual machine"
Will I be better removing and re adding the hyper-v role or is there a set of folders reference to hyper-v I can restore to maybe fix the issue above?
Thanks
kdump on Linux over Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
Hi Experts,
I am running a custom linux VM (2.6.32 kernel) on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. I have installed linux integration services v3.4.
I followed the below KB and configured kdump on the VM which is working fine for now.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2858695
I have the below questions,
Is the above issue fixed in latest Linux Integration Services(3.5/4.0)?
If yes, which version is it fixed ?
Thanks,
Saleem
