Shutdown shortcuts for local HyperV and remote HyperV Core

$

0

hello,

There is one Hyper V 2012R2 (with GUI) and a Hyper V 2012 R2 Core. Management is enabled in the Core.

We have been asked to create shutdown shortcuts in the GUI of server 1 to shutdown both servers.

Is a shortcut with shutdown -i for each server enough for a graceful shutdown of the server (and VMs), thinking that "emulate" a usual shutdown procedure and will take the time tofirst Save VMs state and then shut down the host, or do we need to find first running VMs like adviced here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2013/02/21/use-powershell-to-perform-an-orderly-shut-down-of-a-hyper-v-server.aspx and then shutdown?

Please keep in mind that running VMs must run again when the host(s) are powered up again. Right now we are using Automatic Stop Action > Save VM State.

Best regards

Manually uninstall Integration Services without Hyper-V

Hi,

we have a Problem with a Server 2012R2 VM that was on Hyper-V and now on VMware. The VM was migrated without uninstalling the Integration Services. Now we have Problem with the VSS Provider --> Hyper-V IC Software Shadows Copy Provider. Our Backup Software Veeam has a Problem with this VSS Provider on VMware. The Hyper-V Host is gone, so we can't take the ISO from the host and start the uninstallation.

I searched the internet, but found no way to uninstall these Integration Services manually.

Someone has an idea?

Windows 10 connecting to Windows 2012R2 and a Windows 2016 workgroup servers

Hello,

I have a fresh Windows 10 Pro (Windows 10 v1511) workstation running Hyper-V in adomain environment.  I have two workgroup Hyper-V host servers, one Windows 2012R2 Standard and one Windows 2016 release 4.

I am not able to connect to either server from the Windows 10 Hyper-V Manager.  I have search everywhere and tried everything I have found and still cannot attach to it.  In the past, I was able to connect and manage the Win2012R2 server with a Windows 8.1 computer.

I have followed these instructions (and countless others) to try are resolve this issue:

Manage Remote Hyper-V Hosts with Hyper-V Manager

I originally tried to connect to the Win2012R2 host and was not able to connect.  I then setup the Win2016 server to test connecting to it and still cannot connect.

I am running my domain controller as a VM and don't want my Hyper-V hosts to be dependent on the DC VM.

I am at a loss what to do.  I have had not issues in the past connecting to workgroup Hyper-V host servers.

Thank you...

Charles

Hello,
I did a clean installation of a Hyper V 2012 server, and additionally the Virtual Machine Manager 2012 SP1. The installation succeeded without errors. But after that I couldn't see the server in menu Fabric, Server, All Hosts .. so i can not create a new virtual machine with VMM.
The host is shown in menu VMM server with role Library, VMM server.

Do you have any idea whats wrong here?

I have novirtualswitches

When i try create new one using hyper-v manager (i try run as normal, and run as administrator), or powershell ( New-VMSwitch -Name "vNIC1" -AllowManagementOS $true -NetAdapterName"Wi-Fi")I getting an error :

New-VMSwitch : Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch.

Why do I get BPA error "Servers in Failover Clusters Must Have a Hyper-V Replica Broker Configured"?

$

Hello,

I have configured a Hyper-V cluster with two nodes and one domain controller.

The BPA tells me that "To Participate in Replication, Servers in Failover Clusters Must Have a Hyper-V Replica Broker Configured".

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12798.hyper-v-to-participate-in-replication-servers-in-failover-clusters-must-have-a-hyper-v-replica-broker-configured.aspx

I don't understand why BPA is showing that error. I don't use replication and have not configured replication.

What's wrong and how do I fix it?

Ignoring it is not an option.

Hyper-v 2012 R2 Enable Jumbo Frames

I am implementing Hyper-V 2012 R2 in cluster with 6 six nodes. each node have 6 NICs configured the following way:

- 1 NIC dedicated for hearbeat. I will use this NIC for Live Migration.

- 1 NIC dedicated for DMZ network

- 4 NICs on teaming (switch independent mode ) for VMs (VMs with roles of Exchange, Web, SQL, File Server, etc)

I want to enable jumbo frames for better performance. My questions is, Can I enable jumbo frames in all NIC? There is any considerations enable this feature on Teaming?

Thks for any help?

AVHDX Files needed?

$

Hi,

I've managed to drop a portable HDD with my Hyper V images on it and trying to recover the data ...

The VHDX file has copied fine, but the AVHDX will (eventually) copy but with errors. Not sure how much life I've left in the drive -before it dies.

My question is are these files needed? I don't mind not having the snapshots.

Should I just set up a new VM - and attach the vhdx file to it? Is that the safest thing to do? Worried if any merging takes place it as part of deleting any snapshots it will corrupt the base file.

Thanks

Rich

Hyper-V Live Migration error "Could not get VHD GUID"

$

Hi everyone,

Just migrating to Hyper-V and trying to move some machines from one host to another. About half of our 26 virtual machines have moved successfully, but I cannot seem to get the remainder to move.

When I choose Move from Hyper-V GUI, I put in the new host, directory to move to and hit Finish. It looks like it's going to start but then pops up this error

Can't really find much online about it, the top link is https://charbelnemnom.com/2014/02/virtual-machine-migration-failed-at-migration-source-could-not-get... which basically says to clean anything from the Planned Virtual Machines folder, restart "vmms" service and try again. That doesn't seem to help here.
The rest of the results aren't all that helpful either.

Anyone with any ideas? None of the drives are pass through disks, not sharing the disks between VMs either. I've checked and I've migrated Dynamic and Static VHD and VHDX files, so it isn't a matter of the type of disk, AFAICT.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks all for looking

Problems isolating Cluster traffic from LAN traffic!

$

Hello good people of Technet!

I'm having a problem with my Hyper-V Failover cluster and I was hoping someone could help me out...

Please bear with me, as I have had to figure Hyper-V out for myself mostly, I will happily provide any missing information.

To start off, I have set up the following Failover cluster:

Operating System: Hyper-V Server 2012r2 Core edition, Note: Not Server 2012r2, but Hyper-V Server 2012r2.
Number of nodes in the cluster: 2
Number of physical NICs in use on each host: 8
Storage: Dell Equallogic SAN
Storage access: iSCSI
Port Configuration: 2x iSCSI in a NIC Team
4x Virtual switch, each for a different IP range, not shared with the host OS
1x Management NIC, connecting straight into the main LAN
1x Heartbeat NIC

Between the hosts and the SAN are two switches which we wish to separate from the LAN to isolate the traffic on the cluster and traffic from the cluster to the SAN from the main LAN for security reasons and to comply with Microsoft best practices.

The aim is to make the Hyper-V nodes only accessible via the Management NICs from the main LAN.

The following NICs have connections into the LAN:
1x Management NIC on each server
1x Virtual switch providing LAN access for guest VMs on each server, switch is not shared with Management OS.
All other NICs are connected into the switches, and the switches themselves are currently connected to the LAN by a single connection each.

The problem: When the LAN network cable is pulled from the switches in an attempt to isolate traffic, the Hyper-V guest interface for VMs becomes unbearably slow, as if it's having severe network routing issues (a guess). Also, the traffic from one particular DMZ subnet (possibly all, but this one's the most problematic) will not route properly to another machine on the same subnet, and communication is lost for these particular guest VMs.

Would anyone have any ideas how I might be able to fix this?

I do apologise if this question seems oddly phrased and vague, I'm fairly new to Hyper-V and as mentioned earlier, I would be happy to provide any additional information.

Many thanks,

Chris Stendall

Enable disk write cache with command prompt

Hello,

Using Hyper-V server - is there a way to change the disk write cache policy flag?

I know this check is present in device manager, but without GUI it's I can't change it, also I have problems starting Device Manager remotely (I also checked this discussion: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ccbb04a9-cbd6-4d22-bbf2-9c2ed4b3b40d/access-device-manager-in-hyperv-2012?forum=winserverhyperv with no clues)

So.. maybe there is a way to do this with a command, am I right?

Best,

Simeon

PS - google doesn't gave ma the answer and I also can't search in the technet forum due to this erro:

502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server.

Replica server disk full

Replica server shows a completely full disk and replication shows critical.  I am replicating 2 VM's (800GB) to a 1.7TB disk.

I have changed the recovery points setting from 24 to current only as that was likely a problem.

Any suggestion on how to recover?  Resync maybe?

Virtual Routers makes the filetransfer slow. Is it my hardware or my configuration? Plus routing question.

Lab server specs:
Cpu: Intel G3220 3 GHzMemory: 20 GB ram
HDD: 2x 250 GB SSD and 1x 500GB SSD (for VM's)

Running the above server as a lab server and it works fine for labs where speed is not an  issue. Running Hyper-V 2012r2 with the latest patches. I have One lab-network and One production-network. Using an Internal vSwitch, and then using a virtual gw/router/fw (or what the correct term is) to protect the network and an external switch (see diagram below). I am using pfsense and a Windows server 2012r2 with the RRAS and VPN service activated. The problem is that I am getting very, very slow speed if I transfer data between lab-network and production-network. I am using a nifty program called NetIO to benchmark, and the speed between the DC01 in lab-networktoSVR1 in production-networkis 192 mbit (24 mb/sek). If I connect a computer to the GS108v3switch and run NetIO to theDC01 in lab-networkI get staggering 424 mbit (53 mb/sek). My conclusion is that the Virtual routers are the the bottlenecks in my lab-setup. If i transfer files within the network I get ~800 mbit, aswell between hypervisors I get 850 mbit or better. I cant see any CPU, or Memory peaks in Resource monitor.

If I tracerouteDC01 on lab-network to SVR1 on production-network I get the following result, should it not ignore the 192.168.1.1 and go directly to srv2012rtr, to save a hop?

1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  172.16.16.1
2    <1 ms     1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.1.1
3     1 ms     *        1 ms  srv2012rtr [192.168.1.1]
4     1 ms     1 ms     1 ms  SVR1 [10.10.0.230]

I have been playing with memory, virtual cores and it makes no different in speed.

Just want to a confirm its the hardware and not the configuration that makes it slow. :-)

PowerShell - Hyper-V/VMWare

Hi guys!

I would like to know if someone could help me with the next question:

BEFORE connecting to a server, can I get to know what kind of server (Hyper-V or VMWare) I'm trying to connect to with a PowerShell command?

Because I can get that information once I'm already connected, but I would like to know it BEFORE I am connected, in order to take an action or another with a script.

Thank you very much in advance!

HyperV memory per NUMA node

have some issue with memory allocation on my Hyper-V 2012 R2 server. Server has 16GB of RAM, with 2 x 12 core CPUs. When I runGet-VMHostNumaNode, I am getting following results:

NodeId : 0 ProcessorsAvailability : {0, 0, 0, 0...} MemoryAvailable : 6479 MemoryTotal : 8003 ComputerName : SRV NodeId : 1 ProcessorsAvailability : {0, 0, 0, 0...} MemoryAvailable : 6632 MemoryTotal : 8192 ComputerName : SRV

This shows that available memory for both NUMA nodes is 13.1 GB (of 16GB total). OS should take some memory for itself but there is to big 3GB of memory difference.

On the other hand, when I check free memory in servers task manager it show that 15.5 GB is free.

If I try to run VMs on server, maximum memory that can be allocated is around 13GB. I can run 1, 2, 3 or more always same result maximum 13GB of memory combined.

Any suggestions what it can be or in what direction I should search?

Wanted to get everyones thought on this.....

What do you all think of setting up a domain controller and also installing Hyperv to have guest OS' run within.

Is this supported by MS and best up to best practices?
