Hyper V Hosts in a Domain

$

Need you help understanding how Hyper-V works...

There are 5 physical machines that are hosting Hyper-V, and each has 3 virtual environments running on them. The 5 machines are sitting within a Domain (Active Directory). So, as an administrator, if I want to access any virtual environment, is the login process described below correct?:

1. Input logon credentials on the physical host (authenticated by AD)

2. select virtual environment and then provide logon credentials (again authenticated by AD)

So, the questions here are:

1. Do the hosts inherit the password policies dictated by the Domain Controller (since they are within the Domain). Where am I able to see the settings that show Domain policies are being adopted?

2. Are the virtual environments also inheriting password policies dictated to them by the Domain Controller? Again, where am I able to see the settings that show Domain policies are being adopted?

I'm not a technical person, so please be kind!

Thanks for all your help...

Copy Cluster Roles wizard (Hyper-V 2012) did not migrated the pass-through disks properly from 2008 r2 sp1 to 2012 r2.

The Copy Cluster Roles wizard did migrated the pass-through disks, Configuration files, CSV storage & VM to the target but fails to bring the VM configuration online/available at target cluster node (unable to power on the VM)

Steps taken to repro the issue:-
1)      We have created a test machine (VM1)
2)      Presented the pass-through disks & CSV storage to both cluster nodes
3)      We have attached two pass-through disks at source cluster
4)      Tried moving the VM from old cluster to new cluster using Copy Cluster Roles Wizard
5)      The Wizard was successfully migrated the VM to target cluster node (without any warnings or errors)
6)      The migration report was successful & VM migrated to target cluster node
7)      The Pass-through disks were migrated to target cluster node
8)      CSV also migrated/created at target cluster node
9)      We have brought the VM storage offline at source server
10)   We brought VM storage (CSV, Pass-through disks) online at target node
11)   We were unable to bring the VM configurations online

Following are the events logged in cluster service during this failure.
Event ID:- 1069, Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration VM of type 'Virtual Machine Configuration' in clustered role VM failed.
Event ID:-21502, 'Virtual Machine Configuration VM failed to register the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service.

Can someone help with a fix please ?

Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

Hi all,

Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;

'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'

I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue it would seem some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the linehypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Installing Hyper-V role on a physical domain controller

Hi I have some dilemma whether it is a best practice or not to install Hyper-V role inside a physical domain controller and host virtual machines.

As well I am planning to host a two node SQL fail-over cluster in a virtual environment if it's a good practice to host a Hyper-V host in a domain controller MS2012R2 box.

Thank You

Hyper-V and get-vm cmdlet

Hello, there is a task to use a get-vm for collecting information about the virtual machines. The problem is that it need not lower third Powershell version and reinstall Hyper-V.Is there any way to make it work without having to reinstall the cmdlet Hyper-V?Tried to update the version of Powershell to third and higher, just tried to add the cmdlet manually after upgrade Powershell - it is added and appears in the list, but does not work ...

An error similar to the one when the get-vm is not installed (name of the cmdlet is not recognized ...)

Server virtualization fragmented, so you need to remove it from the server.Version of Windows Server 2008 R2.

Integration Service Upgrade of 2012R2 breaks Windows 2012 VM

$

Hi,

we have setup a new server with Windows 2012 R2 and migrated our VM's over to it.

OS within the VM's are Windows 2008 Server, Windows 7 and Windows 2012.

Everything works fine. Integration Service Update was needed and I could install it on all VM's, except one, that also runs Exchange 2013 on a Windows 2012.

Once I install the Update of the Integration Service, the VM acts weird. It takes about 30 minutes until I could log in. (Probably network problem after the udpate). Once logged in, if I switch to desktop view, the task bar doesn't show items other than the clock, clicking it results in the question, if I want to end a hanging process no matter if I say yes/no no luck. Server Manager opens (very slow), but it doesn't load data (wanted to check nic).

CMD with ipconfig doesn't show a network adapter, just the tunneling-peudo-interface.

Load of the server doesn't show high CPU or Memory consumption, nor high disk i/o. Using Alt/TAB it shows a window called "Immersive Background" (tried to translate to english).

Starting the network manager via

control.exe /name Microsoft.NetworkAndSharingCenter

doesn't open it either. But I can open like Resourcemonitor, Powershell and quite some other programs.

So something is failing here after the update.

Does Exchange and the new Integration Service break each other?

I rolled back VM to an older snapshot and tried the same thing again, same result. On our Replication host, I did a Testfailover, with no network connectivity, everything fine, again, until new Integration service are installed/updated, the host seems broken.

So I have no clue what's happening here or where to start to search. The main problem is, that backups have to be done offline and not online until new integration services are up and running.

Any guess what to try or what breaks the new integration services? Or is it really in conjunction with Exchange?
We didn't upgrade the VM to 2012R2, just the root node.

Thanks

Patrick

VMs set to auto start but don't- Server 2012 Standard

This happens on two Windows Server 2012 Standard machines. When they are rebooted none of the Hyper-V based virtual machines start on their own despite being set to do so. All of them are set to auto start at boot and all of them have to be manually started when the host is rebooted.

I've looked through all other settings and cannot find another place to change startup settings.

Note that I've set a startup delay on all VM's but that didn't seem to do the trick.

Hyper V Replication: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'XXXXXXX': The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).

I have seen this error discussed at length and the common culprit seems to be A/V. This is not the case for me. I got this error when checking replication health on a VM that fails replication almost daily. I usually resume it and it syncs data and continues to successfully replicate to the DR site until it fails a day or two later. Now, it won't resume. There is no A/V to blame and I am at a loss. I have a 5 node cluster on a san for my primary and a 3 node cluster on a san for my secondary. I have 43 VMs that replicate normally with very few failures. Not sure if this is any help, but we run BizTalk on this VM.

Hyper-V windows 7 embedded standard VHD install integration services not working

My existing VM (windows 7 embedded standard) is not letting me install integration services. Has anyone been able to do it, is there somewhere I can find this "integration disk" that will install this on this windows 7 edition? The current integration disk does not support windows embedded standard.

No confirmation prompt when hitting save button on vm console

Why on earth is there no confirmation prompt when you hit the Save button on a hyper-v vm console. Today I was trying to click on the Media menu to insert the guest additions iso and had accidentally clicked the mouse button on the way up there which just so happened to be above the Save button and it just started saving instead of prompting me "Are you sure you want to save/pause this VM?"!!!!!!! Now the server has been saving for the last 15 minutes, this is ridiculous. There is a prompt for turning it off, why is there not a prompt for saving!!!!!!

Hyper-V failed to import initial replica... Account restrictions are preventing

I'm trying to use external media as the initial seed for a Hyper-V Replica (Out-Of-Band Initial Replication). The replica job is created successfully, but when I try to complete the process (after shipping the media) the job is failing with the following error message:

A server error occurred while attempting to import the initial copy.

Hyper-V failed to import initial Replica.

Replication operation for virtual machine 'VM name' failed. (VM ID...)

Hyper-V failed to import initial replica for virtual machine 'VM Name': Account restrictions are preventing this user from signing in. For example: blank passwords aren't allowed, sign in times are limited, or a policy restriction has been enforced. (0x8007052F)

I'm creating a replica job from one Failover cluster (Forest A), to another failover cluster (Forest B). The sites have a site 2 site VPN configured and a forest trust configured.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Sentinel security key pass through to Hyperv 2012 VM

$

Hi,

I am facing a massive problem with a Windows 2008 SP1 32bit server Virtual Machine.

The host is running Hyper-V 2012 R2 server (the free host with no GUI) and managed to P2V an existing physical server running Windows 2008 SP1 32bit using Disk2VHD.

The physical server has a parallel Sentinel SuperPro hardware security key and in Hyper-V I do not believe you can pass through parallel ports.

I read you can with USB.

Now the virtual machine fires up fine, but the financial application complains that it cannot detect the sentinel key and therefore it does not run.

I tried to emulate the dongle by using one of the dongle services websites.

The software runs fine just for one user, but it will not allow me to run multi-user.

So I have gone back to the web and found there are parallel to USB adapters, but I am not sure if they would do the trick.

I tried to contact Rainbow Technologies (dongle makers) in regards to this issue, but have had no reply thus far.

Has anyone been successful with this?

If so can someone give me some direction?

Thanks in advance

Best regards

C++ application to detach a virtual hard disk from a VM

As part of an application to detach a vhd from a VM, I am trying to execute the "RemoveResourceSettings" method ofMsvm_VirtualSystemManagementService class(https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh850278(v=vs.85).aspx).

Below if the mof of the method:

uint32 RemoveResourceSettings(
  [in]  CIM_ResourceAllocationSettingData REF ResourceSettings[],
  [out] CIM_ConcreteJob                   REF Job
);

The input parameter to be passed to the method should be an array of references to instances of the CIM_ResourceAllocationSettingData class, where each instance represents the settings of a virtual resource within a virtual machine configuration that are to be removed.

With the below code, the function execMethod is throwing the error "0x8004102f" - "Parameters provided for the method are not valid". Please let me know if you have any clue as to what could be going wrong here.

Hyper-V client Windows Update very slow

$

I have a server running Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, fully patched.

Yesterday and today when trying to apply this month's Windows Updates to some Hyper-V clients, it is very slow. Both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 clients that had all previous patches are taking several hours to download the updates.

One of the Windows 8.1 clients took from 10:00 to 17:30. We are on 80Mbps broadband and there was no significant other traffic, or loading on the server.

The internal network is 1Gbps and copying a 2GB .iso image to the Windows 10 VM runs at about 60MBps.

Dynamic Memory stops working...

Howdy,

We've had a few instances where a VM that is set for Dynamic Memory would end up maxed out.  We had one that came up yesterday and when I looked in Failover Cluster Manager the VM showed Memory Demand 2 Gigs, Assigned Memory 2 Gigs, Available Memory 0 MB.

The VM is set with 512 MB minimum and 16 Gigs Maximum but it wasn't working.

I simply Live Migrated the VM from one host to another and everything reset once it got to the new one and started working fine.  We've seen this happen a few times in the past and Live Migrating always forced it to resolve itself.

Has anyone else seen this or know what might cause this?  The Hosts are running 2012 or 2012R2 and so are the guests.

Thanks.

Hyper-V Old VM folders cannot be deleted

Hello,

In the process of upgrading VMs through the different version of Hyper-V, including some failures related to dumping a snapshot and the guest just dissappearing from the console- I now have some orphaned VM guest folders and snapshot xml files that I cannot delete.

No Antivirus on the system active, reboot- and still the files are locked and reported as in use.

I have tried taking ownership- rewriting the NTFS permissions- even though they looked fine- but still some folders and files just ca't be removed.

Has anyone else had this issue or something similar? I do know for sure that none of the files in the folders are in use by existing virtual machines and when I pull up resource manager and share and storage manager there are no open files or sessions that point to these folders and files that just wont go away.

any help would be great.

Thanks,
Omar
