Slow accesing HyperV VMs between hosts

0
0

Monring All,

I have two HyperV nodes (hyperv1 and hyperv2) - I have a server running on HyperV2 and it's running fine - but when I try and access it via the Management console on HyperV1 it takes ages to access it. Is this right? Taking between 17 seconds to 30 seconds over a 1Gbit network.

Any advice appreciated.

We do not have Fibre channels as our budget didn't stretch.

Cheers

Gareth

iSCSI booting diskless servers from SAN Hyper-V VM's

GoodDay,

I need some assistance with a configuration.  For simplicity sake I may refer to hardware with incorrect terms in order to clarify host verses client.  I have done some thorough searching for what I wish to do to no avail. I cant imagine this not being a unique setup.

In simplest terms I have diskless server blades.  I wish to boot them directly from my VM's located on my SAN's Box.

  • I have plenty of gigabit nic cards, cable, etc...
  • Assuming the need to use the iSCSI  virtual disk in server manager?  However, I cant get my head around the setup required.
  • Need to use the diskless blade resources, CPU/Memory for the VM's running from the SAN's Box.

It looks as though that with a fiber backbone that this is a common setup.  However it appears that gigabit Ethernet is not an option?

Left domain, rejoined, now domain admin permissions are broken

The title pretty much says it all...

The domain is on a guest VM (Essentials 2012 R2), to which I joined the Hyper-V 2012 R2 host. For reasons not appropriate for discussion here, recently I briefly switched back to Workstation mode. Now that I've rejoined the domain, however, I'm finding that I can't access essential services remotely using the Domain Admin's credentials (Services MMC, Disk Management, etc.). I didn't change any firewall rules during my time away (only an hour or so).

In fact I can't even navigate to its UNC path or any shares (e.g. \\SERVER1). I get this famous error:

Oops

I can RDP into it just fine, using Domain Admin credentials. I've used the 'net localgroup administrators' command to verify that the Domain Admin is indeed in the local Administrators group.

How can I get back to where I was before I left the domain? Everything was going great--I was managing disk partitions, local users and groups, VM settings... you name it. Do I have to delete and recreate the Domain Admin's profile on the host? Is something in there looking for the 'old' account (which is actually the same account)?

Thanks,

Hyper-V VM Configreations

When we are configuration VM in hyper V if we configure startup ram as 1 GB and Minimum RAM 1 GB and Maximum as 4 GB.

In System Properties Installed Memory (RAM) Its shows 1 GB.

If I changes the configuration like this startup ram as 4 GB and Minimum RAM 1 GB and Maximum as 4 GB.

In System Properties Installed Memory (RAM) Its shows 4 GB.

In above two configuration which one is correct?

Enabling "enhanced session" in Windows 8 VM

I downloaded the Windows 8 VM (for HyperV) from modern.ie and imported it into Hyper-V (I'm running Windows 10 Pro).

I wanted to enabled "enhanced session" in the VM, but the option is grayed out.  How can I enable it?  I assume I need to install the "integration components", but that option is also missing!

According to MSDN, Windows 8 is a *supported* guest VM, so why can't I enabled "enhanced session"?

Useless mpio

Hello!

I had set up a cluster with 2 nodes (Hyper-V 2012) and iSCSI box (IBM Storwize V3700). Storwize has 2 controllers (canisters). Both servers (nodes) have 2 connections, one for both controller. They are connected directly (10Gb), no switch is used.

Node1 has ip-addresses 172.16.1.1 and is connected to 172.16.1.2
Node1 has ip-addresses 172.16.2.1 and is connected to 172.16.2.2
Node2 has ip-addresses 172.16.3.1 and is connected to 172.16.3.2
Node2 has ip-addresses 172.16.4.1 and is connected to 172.16.4.2

In my opinion the cluster is not important at moment. Let's look only one node.

Mpio devices were created with ease. But the problem is that I have no profit from it.

At first there is traffic in only one path (Storwize quotes this controller as preferred). Problem: 10Gb is less than 20Gb.
Secondly, when I disonnect that path (or change ip address in Storwize) then there is a long time to before second path starts working, and it is quite slow.

mpclaim -v shows me that the supported policies are "FOO RRWS LQD WP LB". I have tried all of them, though I think the best should be Least Queue Depth. The behaviour is same every time. V3700 is "ALUA Implicit only" device. IBM does not provide vendor specific DSM for iSCSI (it does for fibre channel).

I started with default registry values. Then added suggestions by IBM:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\003\Parameters\LinkDownTime =120 (decimal) (Default was 15)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\003\Parameters\MaxRequestHoldTime =120 (decimal) (Default was 60)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\003\Parameters\MaxPendingRequests =2048 (decimal) (Default was 255)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Disk\TimeOutValue =60 (decimal) (Default was 60)

Nothing better, even worse because LinkDownTime is the time in seconds before something really happens.
I studied that this value does not have effect decreasing below 12. But 12 seconds is terribly long time!

I tried several registry settings with no luck. At moment the settings are:

Hello,

I am using powershell to add a few debian 8 VM using gen 2 firmware. I have create a template vhdx. But when adding the VM using power I cannot had a file boot source pointing the debian efi file for boot.

My question : is the a way to create a file boot source like the one created by the clean install or a windows 2012R2

BootType       : File
Description    : debian
FirmwarePath   : \HD(1,GPT88FDE579-E6C0-4DA3-B5ED-E4D9554F590B,2048,1048576)\EFI\debian\grubx64.efi

VMId           : 3fa73bdd-2958-44df-b977-f77dcdb2e697
VMName         : mgiDeb8

I am all ears for a path

Hyper V vLans and Switch vLans

Hi,

I have tow physical NICs and created two external vNICs bounding on the physical NICs.
Want to configure vLans on virtual NICs and also on physical switch ... what is the best practice in this case? Following is tested but seems to be not working.

vNIC-1 implemented with vlan5 and vNIC-2 implemented with vLan7.

On the Physical Switch I created the vlan5 and vLan7 as well  ---> Connected machine on physical switch's vLan5 and vLan7 but clients cant communicate or ping the virtual machines running with vNIC-1 and vNIC-2.

Any suggestion or best practice for physical and virtual switch vlan configuration to be consider please share.

Hyper-V Live Migration error "Could not get VHD GUID"

Hi everyone,

Just migrating to Hyper-V and trying to move some machines from one host to another. About half of our 26 virtual machines have moved successfully, but I cannot seem to get the remainder to move.

When I choose Move from Hyper-V GUI, I put in the new host, directory to move to and hit Finish. It looks like it's going to start but then pops up this error

Can't really find much online about it, the top link is https://charbelnemnom.com/2014/02/virtual-machine-migration-failed-at-migration-source-could-not-get... which basically says to clean anything from the Planned Virtual Machines folder, restart "vmms" service and try again. That doesn't seem to help here.
The rest of the results aren't all that helpful either.

Anyone with any ideas? None of the drives are pass through disks, not sharing the disks between VMs either. I've checked and I've migrated Dynamic and Static VHD and VHDX files, so it isn't a matter of the type of disk, AFAICT.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks all for looking

When physical server is shut down via power setting and battery status, Hyper-V machines are switched off unexpectedly

I am having the following configuration:
A physical Server Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and VMs are also Windows Server R2.
A APC UPS is connected to the physical server. USB Cable is connected, a driver is installed and in lower right corner of the screen I can see the Icon of the battery and actual status.

On the physical server I have configured power options as follows:
- Critical battery level: 98%
- Critical battery event: Shut down.
VM are configured as follows:
Automatic stop action: Save the virtual machine state. When I unplug the power cable from the physical server and battery goes below 98% physical server is properly shut down.
Problem:
VMs are in switched off state after that and after restart I can see that they were shut down unexpectedly. - I changed settings for VMs to “Shut down the guest operating system”; but I do also not get a proper shut down on the VMs

- I installed KB2887595 but this did not solve the problem. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2896800
- When I manually shut down the physical server VMs are in saved sate afterwards or properly shut down, depending on the setting in Hyper-V Manager.

When physical server is shut down via power setting and battery status Hyper-V machines are switched off unexpectedly.

Does anyone have an idea or solution?

Thank you for any tip already in advance.

Manually uninstall Integration Services without Hyper-V

Hi,

we have a Problem with a Server 2012R2 VM that was on Hyper-V and now on VMware. The VM was migrated without uninstalling the Integration Services. Now we have Problem with the VSS Provider --> Hyper-V IC Software Shadows Copy Provider. Our Backup Software Veeam has a Problem with this VSS Provider on VMware. The Hyper-V Host is gone, so we can't take the ISO from the host and start the uninstallation.

I searched the internet, but found no way to uninstall these Integration Services manually.

Someone has an idea?

Failover Cluster using VNXe3150 hardware for SMB 3.0 file share

0
0

Hi,

I am having problems configuring my hyper-v environment to use failover clustering using the SMB 3.0 share on the VNXe, since all the documentation I have looked at gives examples for iSCSI or Windows Servers acting as storage servers as SOFS. Using the windows servers looks simple since you can use File Services to locate the physical disks, and add the correct permissions but there is no way to do this if you are using SMB file share.

Has anyone done this before and can provide a step by step process or a link to a website which specifically goes through this for Hyper-v clusters using SMB 3.0 file shares and VNXe hardware?

I have two Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v hosts, SMB 3.0 File share and a Witness Share (which have been configured on the EMC VNXe3150). The File share which will host the VMs is configured for continuous availability.

the two hosts have a 10GbE NIC team configured for management, live migration and the cluster, and they also have a 1Gb Nic team for storage which is configured to access the VNXe 3150. Both servers can access the share by typing\\servername\sharename or witness name at the command prompt.

I have installed File Services, Hyper-v and the Failover Cluster features, and configured the network for Live Migration.

My questions are:

1.  Do I need to add a separate Failover Cluster for the SMB file share (I can't see the disks so I guess not), but I think I need to add the Witness share to the cluster using Set-ClusterQuorum -Cluster <clustername> -NodeAndFileShareMajority \\server\witness share

2. Should I see the SMB shares and witness in Failover Cluster manager?

3. How do I give the two Hyper-v server accounts permissions to the SMB File share which is using the VNXe CIFS file system?

4. In Failover Cluster Manager, do I also add the Storage Nics to Live Migration?

Thanks,

Jaz

Hyper-V Windows 8: Error Applying Virtual Switch Properties Changes - Wireless network

I am experiencing an issue when I removed the Wireless device and then re-installed it on Hyper-V Windows 8.

The error states : "Failed while modifying virtual Ethernet Switch connection settings" followed by "Ethernet port {f...} bind failed unspecified error (0x80004005)"

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

Hi.

I am implementing Hyper-v in cluster with 6 nodes, I am configuring the NIC teaming for the VMs (I using 04 NIC 1GB). The networking guys are using a Cisco 3850 with Etherchannel, They are recommending use etherchannel to configuring the team mode.

My questions is?  Etherchannel is support for Hyper-V 2012 R2?  if the answer is yes, what option use? Static team o LACP.

Virtual switch problems on a production host

0
0

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some help that might point me in the right direction to solve a big problem with one of my host Hyper-V servers.

My host has 4 NICs and three out of the four are assigned to be used in Hyper-V. The other day, I needed to add a VM to that host and I assigned an unused NIC (vNIC2) to the new VM. I found the VM could not get on-line so I started digging deeper. The other 3 NICs are working fine. Only vNIC2 is non-functional. Hyper-V isn't showing any issue with it, but it doesn't pass any data.  Eventually I got around to checking the Device Manager of the host. Under network adapters, I find two issues:

1)Hyper-V Virtual Switch Extension Adapter

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

An object ID was not found in the file.

2) Microsoft Hyper-V Network Switch Default Miniport

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

An object ID was not found in the file.

I tried to reload drivers but it tells me the best driver is already installed.

I had read somewhere to try and remove the virtual switch from the virtual switch manager and then re-add it. I got a blue screen of the host each time I tried to remove a vNIC from the virtual switch manager. That was real bad. I have 4 production VMs on this host that I can't afford to lose. All the VMs use local storage and one is a mail server with 1TB of data. I don't think it's safe to do a live migration of the mail server to allow me to take this host off-line and rebuild Hyper-V. So, I'm looking to fix it in place. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hyper-V host is a Supermicro server with 3 different RAID 10 arrays. 1- Host OS  2- VMs   3- Mail store
64 GB of memory, 2 processors, 16 cores each @ 2.6GHZ

Server 2012R2 - fully updated

I did run bluescreen view and got
driver: ntoskrnl.exe
Address: ntoskrnl.exe+14f9a0

I don't think that show anything that is helpful so I zipped the dump files in case anyone knows how to read them.

I really appreciate the help.
