Enabling "enhanced session" in Windows 8 VM

I downloaded the Windows 8 VM (for HyperV) from modern.ie and imported it into Hyper-V (I'm running Windows 10 Pro).

I wanted to enabled "enhanced session" in the VM, but the option is grayed out.  How can I enable it?  I assume I need to install the "integration components", but that option is also missing!

According to MSDN, Windows 8 is a *supported* guest VM, so why can't I enabled "enhanced session"?

VM created on Windows 10 imported to Server 2012 R2

I created a new VM on Windows 10 Hyper-V. Set the VM up and planned on migrating the VM to our production Hyper-V server. The server is running Hyper-V 2012 R2.  First issue is that it appears that Windows 10 cannot do a move of the VM only the disk.  The second and more difficult issue is that it appears that the configuration files and RAM file is now a new format and is not compatible with Hyper-V 2012 R2.  Is this true?  Can I downgrade to a different compatibility, or transform it?  Worst case is I just recreate the VM on the server and just move the VHDX.  Will this work.  Any insight would be appreciated.  Also in the future is there a way to make a new VM created on Windows 10 be 2012 R2 compatible?

Network Planning for Hyper-V Cluster

Hi Folks,

We are in the process of creating 4 node Hyper-V cluster that will host highly available VMs and some VMs locally on each node.

We have four NICs in each host and we want to have NIC Teaming along with required Network Adapters for following.

1. Single Network Adapter for Hyper-V host Management

2. Single Network Adapter for Backup application

3. Single Network Adapter for Heartbeat

4. Single Network Adapter for VM Migration

5. VM communication for application servers (like DNS, DHCP)

6. VM communication for Messaging servers

for 1,2,3,4 Network Adapters we would like to have  single Team using two physical NICs while for 5,6 Network Adapter we would like to have second Team by using other two physical NICs.

please note we also want to keep all 6 networks in separate VLANs and would allow communication as required and We have storage separately that does not require Network.

We would like to know what type of these 6 networks would be, for example Internal or external or private? please assist or suggest better Network plan that gives us better performance.

Thanks.

Thanks, Sheeraz

Drop Connection to Personal And Pool VMs on RDS

Hi,

I have Personal VMs and Pooled VMs on 2 Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 nodes and users complain that their Personal VM got disconnected or dropped unexpectedly. I checked the log and there are many  ID 9009. Users use mstsc from their thin client and remote into their Personal VMs. Other VMs are pooled and they experience drop connections on both.

Thanks

Boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device.

Hi all,

I have a DC with two VHDX.

One VHDX for the C drive and one VHDX for the data E drive.

The data E drive was provisioned at 900 GB as a fixed disk, which was way too big.

So, I backed up all the data from the data E drive. Shutdown the DC then deleted the 900 GB VHDX.

I then created a new replacement VHDX at 500 GB. I reattached the new replacement VHDX to the DC then powered on the DC to see the following error

Boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device.

Or insert boot media in selected boot device.

I have checked the IDE controllers etc., the VHDX are attached to the correct IDE controllers (or shall I say they are as they were before I made any changes)

I have even tried adding to a SCSI controller but that didn't work.

What is strange is that even if I select the network adaptor as the first boot device, or the CD drive as the first boot device I still get the same error.

I have tried moving the VHDX files to another location, then reattaching then booting but still didn't work.

The really frustrating thing here is that I took the time to test this in a lab environment before doing on a production environment and it worked fine in a lab environment!!! Yet it failed in production. This is a major is its the DC and the only DC.

Can anyone please assist me?

Thanks in advance.

Chkdsk scan needed on volume - CSV volume

Hi,

We have 2 nodes Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v cluster. We use CSV iscsi volumes for Live VMs migration. Currently one of 3 volumes reporting: Chkdsk scan needed on volume. I run "chkdsk.exe C:\ClusterStorage\disk3" and got: "The master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute is incorrect. The Volume Bitmap is incorrect.".

Can I run "chkdsk /scan" on this online volume to get more information about error? Or should I move all VMs from volume and only then run /scan?

or should I fix it now with "chkdsk /f"?

Thanks

Multiple MAC Address

Hello all

Have just setup Hyper-V on a standalone server and I want to iron out all the wrinkles before it goes into production. I have noticed an 16945 event in the system log (MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver).  Checking this out lead me to http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/31357.hyper-v-mac-address-conflict-event-16945.aspx.

In the article the screenshot shows 3 identical MAC Addresses for a physical NIC, the NIC Team and the Management adapter (exactly what I have).  I also notice in the article that the author only changes the MAC Address on on the NIC Team (Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver), leaving the Physical NIC and the Management adapter with the same MAC Address.

Is this correct? I would have thought that you would need to also change one of the other 2 (Management adapter?) MAC addresses as well.

Cheers

Eventlog 12140 vmguest.iso is "corrupt" and "unreadable"

On one of my two Hyper-v host machines, I get an eventlog 12140 (i think only when I restart the server, or restart the vmms service) stating:

"Failed to open attachment 'C:\Windows\system32\vmguest.iso'. Error: 'The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.'" ....

The file vmguest.iso exists in the folder, and there is also a vmg28b7.tmp file next to the real file with the exact same size...this temp file will not backup and the backup says access denied...

on one of my VMs, I clicked action and selected "insert integration disk...It says "a previous installation exists and asks if I  want to upgrade or repair..I said Yes, and it seems to "repair" fine, and then the VM reboots OK....

Under the VM settings\mamnagement, I see integration services are "all offerred" ..

Can anyone tell me if there is something I should do?

I read somewhere that the iso file will be re-created if I restart the vmms service...i assume that I would firt=st need to remove the existing file from its current location..?

I appreciate ANY help!!1

thanks!!

Bitlocker within Virtual Machines on Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host

I'm just trying to get a definitive answer to the question of can we enable Bitlocker encryption within a VM that's housed on a hyper-V 2012 R2 host?

Some posts I've seen say it can be done and detail the steps, but others suggest that you can only use Bitlocker on data drives within the VM and not boot drives.

Can anyone please clarify the situation for me?

Cheers for now

Unable to access newly created Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V machine via Hyper-V Manager or MMC

Network conditions:

Windows 2008 R2 native AD forest/domain.

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V domain-joined

Able to remote desktop into Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V machine

unable to access Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V machine via Hyper-V manager or MMC on either Windows 10 or Windows 2008 R2 domain-joined clients

When attempting to connect via MMC, I get the following message -> Computer management

"Computer WIN2K12R2HyperV.domain.local cannot be managed...To enable the appropriate Windows Firewall rules on the remote computer, open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in, and enable the following rules:

COM+ Network Access (DCOM-In)

All Rules in the Remote Event Log Management Group

You can also enable these rules by using Group Policy Settings for Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.  For servers that are running the server Core installation options, run the Netsh AdvFirewall command, or the Windows Powershell NetSecurity Module."

I figure using the "netsh advfirewall" option on the Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V machine is the path of least resistance.  If someone could provide with the correct command syntax to enable both remote computer management and Hyper-V Manager to work, much appreciated.

Fusion Card Memory IO - Assign RAW DIsk to 2012 R2 Hyper-V VM with SCSI Controller

Hi All,

We have windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Running on CISCO C240 Box. We have recently installed Fusion IO card / Fusion ioMemory PX600 to hyper-v physical host. After installing the card, we could see the 2.6 TB in disk MGMT of the physical host. We have assign this Physical disk after making it offline to Virtual Machine with IDE Controller as DATA Disk. After this, Disk was visible to the VM and also did the format of the disk in that VM.

Now, we want to assign this fusion disk to the same VM with SCSI Controller but we are unable to do it. We have removed the IDE controller from VM and then trying to assign this with SCSI but not able to detect the disk in VM with SCSI...

Can any one let me know what could be the issue of not seeing this disk with SCSI in Hyper-V VM ?

Failing VM on 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster

Hi,

I have a 4 node Hyper-V cluster running Windows Server 2012 R2. I'm having a problem with one VM on the cluster dropping randomly with a 1069 event in Failover Cluster Manager (Cluster resource 'virtual machine <vm name> of type 'virtual machine' in clustered role '<VM name>' failed). I'm aware of at least 3 failures in the last 2 weeks, but can't find a trigger. It did seem (strangely) that it was occurring when running some PowerShell commands on the host (either Get-VM or Measure-VMResourcePool), but the latest drop there was nothing ran against the host.

The VM is running SQL on 2008 R2. I've tried the VM on different hosts (all the same spec) as the first time it happened I wondered if it was faulty memory module, but it has still dropped on that host. It's configured for static RAM with SQL being NUMA aware. The specs fit in a single NUMA node. There are other VMs on the same hosts and on the same storage and they don't seem to have any problem. I've tried removing the VM from the cluster and re-adding it. The hosts that I've tried hosting the VM on are not the owner of the CSV that the VM resides on. I have hardening applied to the hosts, based on CIS guidelines. I believe all recommended cluster and Hyper-V hotfixes are installed.

The event logs on the VM just show the last shutdown as unexpected.

On the host, I've ran a Get-ClusterLog (with -UseLocalTime) and found a few entries that look like they could provide useful info, but I haven't yet found any info on them. The failover cluster dropped the VM about 14:29 in these logs, but I've included some key info from before and after in case it helps:
