Why is hyper-v better than virtualbox?

0
0

We have 4-5 people in a software development environment with access to 4 servers, each with 2 quad-core or dual-core cpu's (core-based, before nehalem), and 8gb or 16gb RAM, so I think we have a good amount of power for virtualization. Total, we have a team foundation server, oracle server, web server, 2 virtualization servers, and multiple workstations, some virtualized, some not.

When we started virtualizing about a year ago, for whatever reason, and although everyone has an MSDN sub, we started using VirtualBox instead of Hyper-V. I'm no expert (and that's why I'm here) but I think they operate at different levels of interaction with the hardware, and that VirtualBox is a bad idea for this environment.

Can someone give some good reasons why we should be using Hyper-V? Also is it possible to convert the virtual machines?

And then I would like to know if it's okay to also be virtualizing our web server and oracle server, etc. We have only been virtualizing workstations. I think we really need to make good use of virtualization if we are going to be doing it at all.

Advice welcome also for virtualization best practices, backups, management, infrastructure design, etc. I would like to start with a domain controller, and maybe a Lync server so we can share desktops, etc. Thanks for all input!

External Switch and Physical Machines

0

Hi,

I created a physical switch that is bound on a separate NIC which is connected to a Physical Switch and few physical clients are joined to this physical switch.

Here is the IP Addressing on Virtual Server's NIC.

192.168.10.10
255.255.255.0
192.168.10.1  (On cisco switch I have configured this address to default vLan 1).

Problem:

I can ping the VM server from another VM that is connected to same physical switch.
BUT I can not ping the physical machines from the VMs.

Physical machines can Ping the VMs but not each other (physical machine 1 can not ping physical machine machine 2).

What could be wrong? My purpose is to connect physical machines to VMServer.

I have laptop Dell Inspiron 1526 with the following hardware

Processor: AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual-Core TK-57 1895 Mhz according to AMD web site http://www.amd.com/uk/products/notebook/processors/athlon-x2/Pages/athlon-x2-dual-core-features.aspx it supports virtualization

Memory: 4GB RAM

Hard Disk: C = 100 GB, D = 132 GB

Wireless Network Card: Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card

Laptop is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 installed on the C drive and I attached VHD (Windows Server 2012) on the D drive and configured dual boot.

I booted into Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Evaluation and installed it and it runs well.

I updated the BIOS to the latest version and enabled AMD-V and No-Execute enable bit in the BIOS

Completely shut down the laptop and disconnected power cord and battery.

I installed Hyper-V role and it rebooted but after starting it hung on before showing the log in screen and I had to hard boot and I tried to use all logging configuration none of them worked except safe mode I checked event viewer and I found the following error

DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start service ShellHWDetection with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:

{DD522ACC-F821-461A-A407-50B198B896DC}

I applied the registry posted in this question http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsserver2008r2virtualization/thread/4210cf5f-6735-4c88-815e-aed56836a8c2 but it did not work.

Can anybody help me out find what is the cause of the problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks.

KB2920189 fails to install on generation 2 vm's

It looks like there is a problem with the KB2920189 update.

When trying to install it via Windows Update on some servers, they all fails the installation of this update - they are all running 2012 R2 inside generation 2 Hyper-V machines.

Has this update been tested with the UEFI implementation inside Hyper-V?

Hello,

We are in the process of designing disaster recovery scenario. We have two Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster with ~ 40-50 virtual servers.

We have 1 Gbit ethernt connection between clusters or FC.

The question is which technology to use Hyper-V Replica or SAN replication. What are the pros and cons of each one?

Thanks!

VM and External Network

Hi,

I have a virtual machine, VM1 (running server 2012 r2,). I have few physical machines (connected to a cisco switch , CS1) that I would like to connect with VM1.

Created an External Switch which is bound on NIC1. This NIC is connected to cisco switch CS1 (default configurations only).

What would be default gateway in this case? cisco device or management operating system's virtual nic? What is best practice?

Volume sizing for storing .VHDX

Hi,

I can't find any information on sizing recommendations for volumes storing vhdx files.

For example what would be the recommended volume size where I want to store a .vhdx of 1 TB (fixed size for example's sake).

If we are doing vm backups on hypervisor level, how much free space do I need on hosting volume for VSS etc. ?

Hyper-V VMMS stopping

I am having a wierd issue that has been creeping up ever since i upgraded this VM Host to Server 2012 R2.   the VMMS seems to crash with no real errors or warnings.  the only warning i get is sometime during the night.  the VMMS stops with the following message.

"Virtual Machine Management service is shutting down while some virtual machines begin running. All running virtual machines will remain running with no management access".

I have seen this for Server 2008 R2 but not for Server 2012 R2.  the issues was fixed in a hotfix release for 2008 but i cannot find any reference to it online for 2012 R2.

looking for any type of suggestion.

thanks,

Dan

Manage Pools option missing in Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2

According to this doc page for System Center VMM 2012 R2, there is a "Manage Pools" button on the Home tab when working with the Storage Fabric for File Servers.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn469614.aspx

However, I don't see this and I cannot find anywhere in VMM where to create a storage pool.  Am I missing something obvious or is the documentation incorrect?

** forgive me if this is the wrong forum.  I didn't see one dedicated to System Center VMM.

*** Update: I found a dedicated VMM forum and have reposted the question there:

DPM backup of Fedora 23 instantly fails

I have DPM 2012 R2 RU 8 installed and Fedora 23 Server running as a VM on a 2012 R2 HyperV host.  When I added the Fedora VM to a PG (protection group) its showing the VM as an online backup.   When a backup is attempted, I can see HyperV list 'backing up' next to the VM in HyperV manager for a split second and then fails with the below error in the event log on the HyperV host.   The backup in DPM then just moves on to an inconsistent replica state.  Shouldn't this backup be listed as an offline backup?  How can I change from online to offline?   Some integration services must be available within Fedora 23 as the mouse/keyboard work, but I haven't been able to find any specifics on what is supported.

I can create a checkpoint successfully.  Other VMs backup fine on the host that are online  (windows) and offline types (linux firewalls).  This Fedora VM has never been backed up successfully.

Fix a WiFi Hyper-V Switch

0

I am getting a "Failed while adding Virtual Ethernet switch connections"  when trying to establish a virtual switch over a WiFi connection which I had previously used.  The details say "Ethernet port {GUID} bind failed.  The requested resource is in use. (0x800700AA).  "

Uninstalling and reinstalling the WiFi adapter changed the value of the GUID but still same error message.

There is no vEthernet adapter showing in the adapter properties window. My assumption is that the adapter is hidden from view in the window and / or there is some binding stored in some xml files or registry keys someplace linked to the Virtual Switch that needs to be manually cleaned.  However, I have not yet found where these are.

Has anyone figured out a good way to resolve this issue?

Best practice for virtualizing domain controller

0
0

I recently had a very bad experience with a RAID failure on a hyper V host server.  The host was a server 2012 GUI server that was also my domain controller.  When the RAID began to fail, I had to bring in temporary hardware to build another domain controller/host and transfer my two VMs to it.  The host computer was my domain controller, file server, and print server.  The VMs were my Exchange server and SQL server.  My Barracuda backup device's bare metal restore feature did not work.

My question:  what is the best practice for the host computer?  Is it a better idea to use server 2012 core to host your domain controller/file server as a VM?  Are there any "gotchas" if you VM your domain controller?  Core version cannot be a domain controller - should it simply be a workgroup computer?  Is this a security risk?

I would think I would have saved myself a lot of time and aggravation if I could have restored ALL my servers as VMs.

Thanks!
