Dissapointing performance after implementing dynamic memory

$

We have a two-node Hyper-V cluster running Windows Server 2012 R2 on the hosts and on most of the vm's. For various reasons we have not before tried using dynamic memory on any of these vm's, but we recently decided to do so.

We turned dynamic memory on for about 90% of the vm's (there are about 30 in total) and largely left startup memory unchanged from what it was before and set minimal memory to what we felt each vm could just about get by with. This was significantly lower than startup for most of them. we set maximum memory quite high for some of them as these have very varying workloads. We identified a set of critical vm's and made sure that the sum total of maximum memory for these did not exceed the 128 GB, which each host has, so that we can always patch the hosts without interfering with the critical vm's. So maximum typically is a lot higher than startup.

All in all, we expected better performance as we expected Hyper-V to have more free hands to hand out memory to the vm's that need it. What we saw was that several vm's became sluggish.

And we noted that in fact many vm's received memory below their startup value, while leaving most of the host memory unused. This surprised us. why would Hyper-V hog all that memory to itself?

A few numbers:

Host 1:

Total startup = 30 GB

Total Assigned = 22 GB

Total Minimum = 20 GB

Total Maximum = 58 GB

Total Demand = 14 GB

Host 2:

Here there are 3 vm’s which still use static memory. They have 14 GB between them. They following figures are for the other vm’s:

Total startup = 17 GB

Total Assigned = 21 GB

Total Minimum = 11 GB

Total Maximum = 53 GB

Total Demand = 20 GB

Question 1: Are the figures for assigned memory about what is to be expected given the other figures and given that both hosts have 128 GB?

Question 2: What can we do to change this? Is there a general setting where we can tell Hyper-V to just use more memory as long as it is available? Or do I have to increase minimum memory for all vm’s?

Export VM running on the clustered Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts

Hi everybody,

I'm trying export a running vm on Hyper-v 2012 R2 Clustered but I not found the option on GUI of Cluster Management:

When I use the powershell export command on host but it say that is not possible export the VM because of state of VM (RUNNING), turn off and try again:

As explained below is possible:

Hyper-V is updated to support exporting a virtual machine or a virtual machine checkpoint while the virtual machine is running. You no longer need to shut down a virtual machine before exporting.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn282278.aspx#bkmk_export

Or not possible on hyper v server ?

Thanks Advance

Export VM running on the clustered Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts using Export-VM

None of provided answers are answering my problem. I have the exact same problem and I do not have VMM actually running. I would like to be able to do live backups of VMs with a PowerShell script. The only message I have is:

Export-VM : Failed to create export directory with error 'The system cannot find the path specified.'(0x80070003): Server1 (43B3B88C-0F2D-4C53-80BC-CA3D1C37E104).
The operation failed because the file was not found.

I have understood Export-VM is not cluster aware. But Do you know if we can get the shared clustered volume and provide it to Export-VM cmdlet?

Or please confirm and change technet to inform Export-VM cannot be used at all on clustered environment. I need to know to provide a good solution to my customers.

Thanks by advance,

Tim's answer:

Nicolas,

I have a two-node Hyper-V cluster.  From the node that owned the VM, I issued an Export-VM --VM <vmname> -Path <path> cmdlet and it worked just fine.  From the node not owning the VM, I issue the command Get-VM -Name <name> -ComputerName <othernode> | Export-VM -Path <path> and it worked just fine.

Maybe you are not using the right format of the command because it works just fine for me.

The one interesting thing that is happening is that in the second case, it exports it to the path specified, but that path is on the host from which the export is being performed.  In other words, I have two nodes, node1 and node2.  I have c:\temp on both computers.  When node1 owns the VM and I issue the second command on node 2, the VM gets backed up to node1's c:\temp.

Lastly, it is much more appropriate to open a new post instead of responding to a post that was marked as answered nearly two years ago.

How to Fix a Corrupted Hyper-V VHD File

Hyper-V Blocks 64-bit Guest Support in Other Virtualization Platforms

I had VMware Player and VirtualBox installed on my Windows 8.1 Pro x64 machine with Intel CPU level x64 Virtualization Support (VT-x) enabled in EFI so I could use 64-bit guest OSes. After I installed Visual Studio 2013 for Windows and Windows Phone 8.1 Emulators, which also added Hyper-V , I can no longer create 64-bit guest VMs in VMware Player or VirtualBox. VT-x is still enabled in my EFI settings , so the issue must be that Hyper-V is somehow blocking other previously installed hypervisors from accessing the Intel Virtualization technology required to use 64-bit guest VMs.

Please provide a fix for this so that other hypervisors can still use VT-x 64-bit support when Hyper-V is installed.

Thanks,

Physical drive missing after attempting to install Windows on Virtual Machine

Hi,

I have a problem at the moment where my E: drive, a 250GB physical SATA drive, is no longer visible in Windows.

This happened when I was installing Windows 8.1 on a Virtual machine in Hyper-V. I store all my VHDs on this E: drive.

The installation froze after choosing install location (I had partitioned 40GB for the VHD). I left it for a few minutes, but there was no response. Hyper-V was showing a "Critical" warning in the main Window, so I shut the VM down. At that point my E: drive was showing in Explorer as a CD-ROM drive. When I attempt to open it, it asks me to insert a disk into the drive.

I don't think it's a hardware failure because it seems too much of a coincidence that this happened as I was installing to VHD on the drive in question. Multiple reboots hasn't resolved the issue, and the drive is not being picked up in Device Manager or Disk Manager.

Has anybody come across this before? Any ideas of what I could try?

Windows 10 enterprise ltsb Hyper-v virtual: switch not working, Cannot uninstall hyper-v.

HI all

I cannot get hyper-v virtual swich up and running .  ( It ran for a day or so, and then maybe some update made it malfunction)

Switch telling that I should "attach cable" ( or the like :-< )

version : Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB

I've tried to uninstall through -> control-panel -> programs... -> windows programs  ->  uncheck hyper-v

This seems to do   ( my guess)
1:  an uninstall
and then to my surprise
2:  an install of hyper-v
or maybe it just fails.

Because after a reboot .. hyper-v is still alive and kicking ... to my utter frustration.

I could throw away windows 10 , but I find that this would be a terrible waste of work ... so I'll ask here first.

How can I enable host access on a NIC within HyperV R2?

$

Using SCVMM recently I mistakenly unchecked the box under the HyperV R2 host Network tab for Host Access. I've since lost ability to control with HyperV manager or SCVMM likely because it looks like it now treats the NIC as a passthrough directly to the VMs. The single VM I have it assigned to works on the network without issue, however this doesn't help obvoiusly.

I need to re-enable host access for the adapter so I can manage it remotely again and I can't seem to figure out how to do this. Thanks in advance.

Building internal Hyper-V lab on laptop

Hello

I know this is going to be kind of a silly question. I am building a lab on my Windows 10 laptop using Hyper-V.

It will consist of:

1 Domain Controller

1 SCCM 2012 R2 server

1 File server

1 Systems Center Orchestrator 2012 server

and 2 test clients.

This is my work computer that I want to use for testing and learning while I am on the go. I know to keep the network from

touch my company network I should just my sure the virtual switch is set to Internal. Sometime I would need to connect the VMs to the actual internet to DL WSUS updates and who knows what else. I do understand that my domain vm if detected on the corp network my cause all heck to break out. Has anyone been down this road and come up with a smart solution for making sure the DC doesn't get detected? I  have feeling there might be setting in the VM that I could use to keep that VM from every been seen on the network and getting me fired :)

Thanks in advance!

The MAC adress is generate automatically of course, replace the MAC address that is generat with my public IP is the right way ?

If replace the MAC address is the right way, how can I process ?

Is there an another way to Load-Balancing my two IIS with one public IP ?

High Network Utilization on HeartBeat and LiveMigration networks - Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster

$

Hi all,

I have just setup a fresh Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster with 4 nodes.

Config:

    • Network:
    • 2 x Networks for iSCSI
    • 1 x VM network 1
    • 1 x VM network 2
    • 1 x Heartbeat
    • 1 x LiveMigration

  • Disks:
  • 5 GB = Quorum
  • 2 x 2.99 TB (Deduplication enabled)

The problem I am getting is that HeartBeat and LiveMigration (both configured with Cluster Only traffic) have alot of traffic on them even though no LiveMigration (the only card configured for LiveMigration) is going on.

All network configuration is the same as it was in Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster which these machines where running before (not upgrade, fresh install and migration) and did not have this "problem".

Has anyone experienced this or have a solution to this?

Thorir

Failover Cluster and Hyper-V Issues

$

Good day,

I have a Dell VRTX with two compute nodes configured as a failover cluster.

Of late I have noticed the following:

1. Node 1 can create VMs and their associated files on the CSV but cannot start the VM it created:

2. From Node 2's RDP GUI I cannot move VMs from Node 1 to Node 2 (pull), however from Node 1's RDP GUI I can move VMs from Node 1 to Node 2(push):

3. Once I push the VM created on Host 1 to Host 2 from Host 1's GUI, Host 2 can start it.

I have pictures of the error messages but cannot upload them because my account is apparently net verified.

Why do I have this issue?

How do I fix it?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Virtual network forgotten after migration/reboot

$

Hi everyone,

We have an odd situation with a virtual cluster. Each node in the cluster has 2 virtual networks named "DMZ Virtual Network" and "DMZ Virtual Network 2"

Whenever a VM is migrated between the hosts or if one of the hosts is rebooted - all the VMs with DMZ Virtual Network 2 revert to DMZ Virtual Network and we have to manually set it back to DMZ Virtual Network 2 - the virtual switch setting on the virtual NIC seems to be reset and I'm not sure why. They are identically named on each host, I've made sure of that. Anyone have any clues for me on what might be causing this?

Thanks

Hyper-v 2012r2 DR Replica scenerio

Here is the scenario I am trying to test. I have a HV Cluster setup, I have a replica server. The replica server is using iSCSI storage. The iSCSI storage is connected over a WAN link, but the replica server is on-site. OK, so my building burns down. I have lost my cluster and the replica server, but still have all the vm's on the replica storage. I setup a new server and attempt to import the VM's. No matter what I try, Hyperv Manager will not import the VM's and their configs. Any ideas how to make this work?

Hyper-v Guest Running Out of Memory

Folks:

I have a user that is constantly getting out of memory errors.  The settings on Hyper-V Manager do not seem to make any difference.  No matter how much memory I give, the error messages still come.

It is not clear but it seems that the out of memory messages might be happening only with Outlook 2010.

Does anyone know what's going on?
