Interrupted VM stuck

0

I was doing updates on my 2012R2 Hyper-V VM and power dropped. When I booted my host PC back up the VM would start and say Hyper-V Updating your system (x%) and get stuck at 5%. I can't get past this and I have no snapshots/backups of the VM. Is there anyway to recover this VM?

I am getting the following error in the system logs "The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'". Do I need to upgrade from Windows 2012  to Windows 2012 R2 or is there a hotfix?

VM stuck at "Updating your system - 6%"

I'm having the same problem referenced at https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/73e91012-c779-4a41-9bd5-02ae4db16a67/2012r2-hyperv-guest-stuck-updating-your-system-6?forum=winserver8gen. I started with a 2012 R2 VM that was last used in May, booted it yesterday, and applied the 121 pending patches from WU. Now it hangs at 6% when restarting.

Steps I've tried:

  1. From the recovery prompt, removing c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml. File wasn't present on the target system.
  2. Running the script from https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/ScriptCenter/5b4a7114-218b-466c-a9c1-7eb2f725e707/ on the host. The cert shows as correct in the registry.
  3. Disabling and re-enabling secure boot.
  4. Running dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions, which produced errors but didn't fix the problem.

How can I copy/paste text from an RDP within Hyper V to host? My email is on host and whenever I need to copy some thing from/to host to RDP within Hyper V, it would not do it. It affects productivity a lot. Please please provide step by step instructions on how to turn it. Thanks,

Another Managing Hyper-V from Windows 10 Post!

Hi all -

I was in two minds as to whether to post, having spent some considerable time on this already and feeling well and truly defeated! However, I figured it was worth a shot.

I recently upgraded my PC from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
Since doing so, I am unable to connect to and manage two Hyper-V Core 2012 installations we have at a remote site permanently connected to us via VPN. These servers are in a workgroup, and my PC is in a domain.

In Windows 8.1, adding the two Hyper-V servers to my local DNS Hosts file, adding "Remote Access" to ANONYMOUS LOGON under DCOM Access Permissions, configuring the trusted hosts under winrm and adding stored credentials for the two workgroup servers was all that was required to get things working.

In Windows 10, I've tried everything I can think of, plus a lot of suggestions found within these forums (and elsewhere). It seems Windows 10 Hyper-V management connects in a slightly different way to the old Windows 8.1 management tool. One interesting find was that port 5985 wasn't actually "open" to me connecting from here. Turns out the Hyper-V server was connected using a "Public" firewall profile, which restricts WINRM connectivity to local subnet only. Never an issue with Windows 8.1. However, modifying this rule still didn't resolve my issue. I got a different error message instead.

So, as it stands, if I run Windows 10 Hyper-V Management (directly from my domain account), I get the error:
"The operation on computer 'HV1' failed: WinRM cannot process the request. The following error occurred while using Kerberos authentication: Cannot find the computer HV1. Verify that the computer exists on the network and that the name provided is spelled correctly."

I've tried using the "Connect as another user" option, but as I understand it, this functionality isn't supported with older versions of Hyper-V anyway. That said, if I do try to connect with the credentials for the local administrator account on the Hyper-V server, I get the message:
"You do not have the required permission to complete this task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer 'HV1'."

I've also tried setting up a local account on my PC with the same username / password combo as the Hyper-V server, and running the management tool under that account. The results again are different. Using this approach, I get:

This is probably because it is seeing the username as MYCOMPUTER\username, rather than HV1\username.

Nevertheless, I'm stuck currently having to manage these servers via a Windows 8.1 installation I've done on our own Hyper-V server, as I cannot get Windows 10 to play nicely with it at all.

I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions as to how I might resolve this?
I also think Microsoft have a long way to go when it comes to Hyper-V Management tools. Even under Windows 8.1, it seemed to me that setting up remote management was a nightmare compared with alternate products, such as the VMWare products. I wish they'd address this and provide automation for setting up remote management tools and prepping the server for use of said tools.

Many thanks in advance!
Simon.

Hyper-V Networking (Server 2012 R2): Prioritizing Network Traffic with "Virtual Internal" Network switches and "Virtual External" Network switches

0
0

UPDATE:  On the APP Server, I tried to do a reorder of the bindings of the NICs and I also tried to do "Interface Metric" and set a value for both NICs one lower and one higher.  The lowest one being the one at the top and the higher one and nothing worked.  I also tried to do it via MAC address and yeah, nothing works.   I am thinking this is because they are "Virtual Switches" and not just "Virtual NICs".

NOTE: I did research this via Google, but didn't find a lot that would be "useful", so I came here hoping for an answer.

What I have set up is this.....

1) A "database server" that is a VM and that is located on my Hyper-V Host called HyperV2

2) An "App Server" that is a VM and that is located on my Hyper-V Host called HyperV2.

3) I have my Hyper-V Host called HyperV2 using "Windows Server 2012 R2".

What I want to happen is this....

1) I want to be able to have an Internal network so that the "App Server" can talk to the "Database Server" directly instead of going over a physical NIC.   I already have an "Internal Virtual Network" Switch setup for this.

2) I want the Database Server and the App Server to be both available to the Internet for development purposes and this will use the "External Virtual Network Switch" that I have set-up.

My problem is, that I cannot prioritize the Network connections so that my "Internal Network" connection is used first.  The "Internal Network" doesn't use a physical NIC and just uses Internal, therefore it is not subject to a NIC failure and also has more performance.

NOTE: The Internal network only gets used if I disable the "External Network".

I am sure you guys know what is up and are smarter than me about figuring this out.  I got this far and I am close, but I just need your help to figure the rest out.

Is there a tutorial available for all of this?

Remote access via vmconnect 6.3

I am trying to create a desktop link to a specific vm within the Hyper-V (Server 2012r2).  The local machine is Windows 10.  I have it working to the point that if I run vmconnect 6.3 from either a desktop shortcut or a command line (neither with the usual parameters as to the server or vm) it is fine, but it shows the whole list of vms available.  But, when I add the <server> and <vm> parameters to either to limit it and go directly where needed, it errors with:

"An error occured when trying to register events for 'TargetVM'.  To fix the problem, restart the virtual machine. If that does not resolve the problem, restart the Virtual Machine Management service, and check the Windows Firewall.

RPC server unavailable. Unable to establish communication between 'Hyper-V-Server' and 'LocalMachine'."

Again, when run without the parameters, it is fine and connects to the machine when selected from the list.  Any ideas?

Hyper-V 2012 Live Migration of Virtual Machine Guest Cluster Node causing cluster resource failures

Hi,

We have an 11 x node Hyper-V 2012 Cluster.  I am in the process of installing additional software updates and hotfixes on all Hyper-V hosts.

We have a 2012 SQL Failover guest cluster with SAN attached storage using virtual HBAs.

The guest cluster node live migrated successfully.  However after the live migration the guest failed to write to one of the disks presented through vhbas and this caused the SQL cluster resource to failover to the other cluster node.

In the event log of the guest cluster node we received the following error:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        MSSQLSERVER
Event ID:      17053
Task Category: Server
Level:         Error
Description:
SQLServerLogMgr::LogWriter: Operating system error 170(The requested resource is in use.) encountered.

And the on the Hyper-V host we were live migrating the virtual machine to received the following error:

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-SynthFc-Admin
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-SynthFcVdev
Event ID:      32214
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Description:
Failed to reserve LUN with Instance Path '' to virtual machine '' with error: The data is invalid. (0x8007000D). (Virtual machine ID )

The source Hyper-V host has the following hotfixes installed:

KB2806542
KB2823643
KB2832478
KB2838043
KB2840681
KB2853422
KB2878635
KB2894032
KB2894464
KB2913695

The destination Hyper-V host had the following hotfixes installed:

KB2806542
KB2823643
KB2832478
KB2838043
KB2840681
KB2853422
KB2878635
KB2894032
KB2894464
KB2913695
KB2916993
KB2928439
KB2929078
KB2929869
KB2996928

The storage array used to present the disks to the guest cluster node does support 2012 and ODX.

We are using HP BL460c Gen8 v2 Blades and HP 3PAR 7400 if that helps.

We have experienced this issue previously but it was on a storage array that did not support 2012 and ODX.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Backing Up Bare metal on Visualized DCs

Hello,

I have virtualized Domain Controllers and would like to know the best way of backing these DCs.

A) If I backup the bare metal using Windows default backup tool would I be able to (1) restore the same on a new virtual server on the same host? or (2) another virtual server on a different host or (3) the same host with no virtual configurations anymore (if it happens I have abandoned the visualization)

B) Would creating a virtual server (disk) image be better for restoration on the same host or on a different host than the Windows backup of the the bare metal?

NB: I understand the importance of regular system state back ups. Also I have the same hardware types/models.

Thank you

I have Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core installed with a USB drive attached. I can see this drive in disk part fine:

DISKPART> list disk

Disk ###  Status         Size     Free     Dyn  Gpt
  --------  -------------  -------  -------  ---  ---
  Disk 0    Online          232 GB      0 B
  Disk 1    Online           10 TB      0 B        *
  Disk 2    Online         3724 GB      0 B        *
  Disk 3    Online         7498 MB      0 B

My USB is Disk 3. In Hyper-V settings, I have allowed enhanced session mode.

I have Lubuntu 14.04 LTS installed as a guest VM. How do I access the USB drive plugged in to the Host from the Lubuntu VM?

Enable Jumbo frame for VM

Hello,

I recently enabled jumbo frames inside a virtual machine and enabled jumbo frames on the physical network adapter assigned to that virtual machine. When I try to setup the icsi initiator it becomes unresponsive . When I disable jumbo frames within the VM everything works fine. I enabled jumbo the switch and on the DAS device.

Guide to remote manage Hyper-V servers and VM's in workgroups or standalone

0
0

This guide is based on the following 3 products:
Windows server 2012 (core)
Windows 8
Hyper-V server v3 / Hyper-V server 2012

The following guide will enable you to:

1: remotely manage your Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Hyper-V manager
2: remotely manage your Hyper-V servers' firewall with a MMC snap-in.
3: remotely manage your Hyper-V server (2012) with server manager

! This should also work for Core installations of server 2012, but I haven't tried.

This guide is purely focussed on servers in a WORKGROUP, or as a stand alone.
I CAN NOT tell you what you need to do to get it working in a domain.

* You can run these commands straight from the console (Physically at the machine) or through RDP.
* You will need to be logged on as an administrator.
* Commands are listed in somewhat random order; I do however advise to follow the steps as listed.
* Commands with “?” in front of them are only meant to be helpful for troubleshooting,
* and to identify settings and changes made.
* Commands and instructions with “!” in front of them are mandatory.

If you encounter any errors with any of the syntaxes provided, then type them manually!
Copy/paste sometimes gets corrupted due to text-encoding, and in particular hyphens and dashes. A hyphen is not the same as a dash and can mess up your syntax and break it. Here's an example:

1.hyphen (-)
2.'N' dash (–)
3.'M' dash (—)

- server: means the server core or hyper-v server (non gui)
- client: means the machine you want to use for remote administration.
- Some commands are spread over 2 lines; be sure to copy the full syntax.

> To enable the Hyper-V manager to connect to your server, you need to perform the following 2 actions: (Assuming you have already installed the feature)

1:
! Client: Locate the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file.
! right-click --> properties --> security
! click --> edit --> add --> YOURUSERNAME or Administrator --> OK
! then select this new user, and tick the "modify"-box under the "allow"-section.
! apply the change, and close.
! doubleclick the file, and open with notepad
! add the ip-address and name of your server (no // or other crap needed)
! Save the file
# I recommend putting a shortcut to this file on the desktop.
# If you change the ip-address of your server (e.g. move the server from staging to a live environment)
# you might forget to do so in the hosts file.
# Hyper-V manager, MMC, RSAT, and Server-manager all rely on the hosts-file to resolve the name.
# some of these might connect to their respective service on an i.p.-level, but some don't.
# This is the main reason you need to modify this file.

! USE AN ELEVATED CMD/POWERSHELL PROMPT TO CONTINUE !
# the next config needs to be done on windows 8.
# It seems that it's already preconfigured under server 2012

2:
! Client: dcomcnfg
! open component services --> computers
! right-click -> my computer -> properties
! select "COM SECURITY" tab
! under "ACCESS PERMISSIONS" select "edit limits"
! select "ANONYMOUS LOGON", and tick "remote access" under ALLOW
# Without this adjustment, you can't connect to your Hyper-V server
# with the Hyper-V manager if you're not in a domain.

> And if you haven't done so already... make sure you have enabled remote management number 4 on the Hyper-V server console.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

> Next, is to get the MMC firewall snap-in working.
The reason for this, is to have a GUI available to configure it.
If you're happy without it, you may skip this and use a shell instead to do so.

? server: netsh advfirewall show currentprofile
# shows the current profile (public/domain/private) and its settings
# depending on your needs, you should set the right profile to fit your needs.
# You can easily do this when the MMC snap-in is done. (after you've followed these steps)

! server: netsh advfirewall set currentprofile settings remotemanagement enable
# enables remote management of the firewall on an application level
# (In other words: allows the firewall to be remotely managed)

! server: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Firewall Remote Management" new enable=yes
# allows remote management of the firewall, through the required firewall ports with TCP protocol.
# 4 rules will be updated to allow access: public & Domain, dynamic and endpoint-mapper.
# You can disable/add/change the rule from the MMC snap-in after finishing this guide.
# e.g. set the firewall through the MMC-GUI to only allow specific ip-addresses etc.

? server: netsh advfirewall firewall show rule all
# Shows a list of available rules, and their current state.
# when run from cmd, the list exceeds the maximum length for review.
# (from cmd, type:) start powershell, and run the command from there.

! Client: cmdkey /add:YOURSERVERNAME /user:USERNAMEONTHESERVER /pass:THEPASSWORDOFTHATUSER
# I recommend you to use a username with enough privileges for management
# All capital letters need to be replaced with your input
# CMD answers "credential added successfully" when you're done

! Client: locate MMC, and run it as an admin.
# In windows 8/2012, go to search and type MMC. Right-click the icon,
# and choose run as admin on the bar below.

! Client: application MMC: select "file" --> Add/remove snap-in
! --> (left pane) scroll down to "windows firewall" --> select and click "add"
! select "another computer"
! type the name of the server you want to manage (NO workgroup/ or //, just same name as you typed for cmdkey)

* Part 2 is done.
# Have a look by doubleclicking the firewall icon in the left pane.
# It looks and works the same as the GUI version that you are familiar with.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

! Next is the Server Manager.
# Follow the steps listed to get your server listed and manageable in the server manager.

! Client: Open the created Firewall snap-in for your server.
! Find the 3 "Remote Event Log Management" entries in the list of INBOUND rules, and enable them.
! Open powershell --> in cmd windows, type: start powershell
! run the following line in powershell
! Client: in C:\Windows\system32> set-item WSMAN:\localhost\client\trustedhosts -value YOURSERVERNAME -concatenate
# WinRM Security Configuration.
# This command modifies the TrustedHosts list for the WinRM client. The computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be
# authenticated. The client might send credential information to these computers. Are you sure that you want to modify
# this list?
# [Y] Yes  [N] No  [S] Suspend  [?] Help (default is "Y"): y
#
# I recommend to choose yes; unless you like to pull some more hairs...

! server: winrm qc
# WinRM service is already running on this machine.
# WinRM is not set up to allow remote access to this machine for management.
# The following changes must be made:
# Configure LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to grant administrative rights remotely
# to local users.
# Make the changes? y / n
!  select yes
! Client: open the server 2012 server manager
! click manage -> add server
! select the DNS tab, and type the name of your server

Done.

You can now manage your remote server through the familiar computer management GUI.

! Right-click your remote server, and select "Computer Management"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few side notes:

? The Performance tab seems to list the local machine's performance, in stead of the remote servers'
? If you want Windows server backup, you need to right-click the server in the server manager, and select "add roles and features.
? it will then become available under the "computer management" of the remote server.

If you liked this guide you may thank my employer, Mr. Chris W.
for giving me the time to work it all out.
Cheers!

Hello,

For some reason, my w2k12r2 server kept on getting this weird VSS error.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CLSIDFromString({00000001-0000-0000-0001-000000000001}).  hr = 0x80070002, The system cannot find the file specified.

When I click on the volume, it took me to my CSV volume.  My backup using Veeam for Hyper-v vm would fail.

I did vssadmin to list writers, there were no errors.   I tried to use Windows server backup to backup my VMs, and it would also fail as well.  Any thoughts ?

Recreate replication relationship from Replica to Primary using an existing VM

0
0

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to use an existing VM to re-establish replication from my Replica server back to my primary. Here is my lab setup-

Site A (Primary): Windows Failover Cluster with (2) Hyper-V hosts

Site B (Replica): Single standalone host

I'm replicating a VM from Site A => Site B. I am able to remove replication for this VM successfully, and then re-create the replication relationship by selecting the "Use existing VM as the initial copy..." option.

Unfortunately, this does not work in reverse. I fail over my VM so that Site B is active, and then remove replication. Trying to re-create the relationship (Site B => Site A now) with the "Use existing VM as the initial copy..." option comes back with error: "Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine [...] Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine as Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the Replica Server."

Has anyone run into this before?

How to Access an Attached Phone from a Hyper-V VM?

I am trying to debug a phone application from VS 2013 installed in Hyper-V VM on WinSvr 2012 R2. I have a Windows Phone attached to the server via USB however when I go to debug the application I get "Deployment failed because no Windows Phone was detected. Make sure a phone is connected and powered on."

How do I give the VM access to the USB port and the phone?
