Smart card service issue on Windows Server 2012r2 - terminal services (running on HyperV)

0
0

Hello...

I have virtualized terminal server on HyperV. All my remote clients use USB SC reader for certificate use.

Now pay attention... the Server 2012 has new feature regarding Smart Card use:

"Smart card reader detection logic has been added so that the Smart Card Service runs only when appropriate. On Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, the Smart Card Service (scardsvr) automatically starts when the user connects a smart card reader and automatically stops when a user removes a smart card reader and no other smart card reader is connected to the computer. On startup, the Smart Card Service automatically starts if a reader was previously connected to the computer but a reader is not currently connected to the system. If no smart card readers are connected to the computer, the service will automatically shut down one minute after the last API call into the Smart Card Service. If a reader was never previously connected to the computer, the service will not start automatically."

And here is the main part... HyperV running OS doesn't support USB SC reader detection on remote client. When I insert the card nothing happens. The SmartCard service doesn't start (Automatic setting). RDP SmartCart share is enable on client.

If I start service manualy then the SmartCard is accessible. But only for the time of my login. if I logout then the service is stopped.
I also test it with logon to non HyperV server... the service starts with no problem.

For now I solved the issue with task net start SCardSvr on 1 minute.

Please can anybody help me with this...

FIle copy to VM network spikes (Hyper-V Server 2012)

Hello,

I am experiencing a strange problem on my VM's, when i copy a larger file (over 10GB) the file copy starts alright, and speed is good (60-100MB/S), but then suddenly, kind of random, the speed drops and the connections kind of spikes on the target VM.

I have tested my connection to my ISCSI storage, and if i try to copy directly to my CSV speed is good, around 200MB/S, so the problem must be either on the VM NIC or the VM network.

The problem is the same on either one of my cluster hosts (i have 3) , i use SCVMM, if that makes a difference in this case, even though i wouldn't think so.

VMQ is disabled - so that's not the problem.

Thanks!

How to run Hyper-V guest at native 30" monitor resolution

I am in the process of migrating a number of production systems to Hyper-V (Running on Server 2008R2) but a requirement is that these run at the native resolution of our 30" monitors in portrait mode (1600x2560). Clients connecting are Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1.

How can i increase the resolution of the guest VM's beyond 1600x1200?? Is it possible to emulate a graphics card or 30" monitor to make these higher resolutions available in display properties?

If I connect using RDP 8.1 (Installed on the clients) and specify the resolution it defaults back to 1600x2048 and leaves black borders at the top and bottom.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hyper-V Replica Health issue

Greetings!

I would like to get some advices regarding to a Hyper-V replica issue. To keep it short, thare are 2 clusters, hosts are Windows Server 2012 Standard.

If i check the primary VMs replication health status, its marked green, however on the replica VM its in a warning state.

The replica's state is "replication enabled", it shows that 0 cicles are completed and says that the last sync. happened on the 19th of September.

The replica VM vhd changes in every 5 minutes (as intended) and its size equals with the primary VM.

So, it looks like the replication works, and the logs on the replica are false.

I've reseted the statistics for the replica health but it stills shows the same date for the last sync.

Regarding to the primary host events, a few re-synchs had happened in the last few weeks.

Anybody encountered something like this?

Do you have any ideas how to fix. this log?

Best regards, Bence.

Error: 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.'.

Hi,

I have encountered a very strange issue and was wondering if could get any pointers.

We have a hyper-V cluster with 4 hosts A, B,C and D

Checking the hyper-V server role event viewer logs on the servers are full of errors like below:

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Storage
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS
Date:          25/10/2015 21:06:14
Event ID:      27000
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:
User:          <username>
Computer:      A
Description:
Failed to open attachment 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume4\CTXVMMM04\CTXVMMM04.vhd'. Error: 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.'.

strange part is this VM is actually with host D whereas the event has been reported on Host A. there are no similar events on Host D.

I have checked all XMLs @C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V on Host A and can see no relevant xml file for VM generatnig error.

The VM generating error was migrated from Host A to Host D successfully.

any clues please?

Kumar

Windows Small Busines Server 2011 Standard VM will not boot after move it to Hyper-V 2012 goes into a reboot loop.

I have client that I am working with to upgrade and virtualize there environment with Windows Server 2012 R2 and Hyper 2012.

I have a Window Small Business Server 2011 Std VM that is running fine on the a Windows Server 2008 Std Hyper-V host but when I move it to and set it up on a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V it will not boot in to windows. It startup and attempt to load windows but gives a quick Blue Screen that I can see and reboots.

Anyone had this issue? Anyone have any basics thoughts or ideas what could be the issues. I have setting the same except I set the new VM to use dynamic memory (Which I tried without enabling dynamic memory and still would not boot). Also I don't have the NIC set to "not connect" until I get the VM boot and configured.

So if anyone has any thoughts on this please share you insight.

Thansk

Hyper-v Host Memory Allocation

I'm running a small lab on a physical hyper-v host. The host has 384GB of RAM, or which 33Gb is allocated to guests. The size on disk of all of my guests is 351Gb but with deduplication I'm only using 196GB. Is it possible to have the host load the guests into RAM in order to make the guests run faster? I've been considering replacing my hard drives with SSD's to speed things up but it seems like a waste to have all this unused RAM so I thought maybe there's a way to leverage that better.

Setting up Replication vs. Cluster - differences?

0
0

Hello,

I set up replication and it works fine but what I wasn't expecting was that there was no automated failover when one box goes down.   I don't know much about clusters with hyper-v.

Basically in most environments the budget is very tight so I take their old server - update it a bit and make it the replication server to their new server.  Not quiet as fast but usable in a pinch.    Both servers are complete servers with their own storage.   Is clustering a better solution?  Can boxes have separate storage and be clustered?   Would hyper-v auto failover in that environment?

Can't start vm because it says "the process cannot access the file because it is beig used by another file

I was connected to a vm with logmein. the host rebooted to install a windows update and now I can't start the vm because of logmein.  Any thoughts how to correct this problem?

Make V ports dedicated and not switches.

This is my situation:

I have a whitebox server running Hyper-V with a dual nic card (Intel) installed in addition to the onboard Nic (Realtek).

I have the 2 Intel Nics configured in Hyper V for a DHCP/filter (LAN and WAN) on a 10.10.10.1/24 VLAN. And the Realtek is dedicated for the physical server, not configured for Hyper V on my 192.168.0.1/24 LAN.

So on the Physical server I get a seemingly correct ipconfig. 192.168.0.x Correct Gateway, DNS, Domain, etc. However if I browse to the internet I am pushed through my 10.10.10 filter!! I can even browse to and manage the 10.10.10.2 Gateway!

I am befuddled. I think because the two Intel Hyper-V nics are "Switches" I am somehow able to talk with them from the physical.

What I want is to have the two intel ports dedicated to being just Ports with one instance connected to the Virtual Machine. Not Switches.

Does that make sense? Or am I not even remotely sane?

BSOD Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 - Critical Process Died

0

I am running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core) on three servers.  Unfortunately none of them have identical hardware configurations - thus I can't easily tell if there is some compatibility problem between a Microsoft update and my hardware. All three systems are setup to automatically download updates.

A few weeks ago one of the systems seemed to be rebooting regularly.  After connecting a monitor I saw a BSOD with a message "Critical Process Died."  I'm not 100% certain of this, but these BSOD reboot problems seemed to have started shortly after getting a recent automatic update(s)?

I have checked the Event Logs and looked for dumps or other logs, but haven't been able to locate anything that explained the chronic BSOD failures on the one server.  Nor have I found anything that tells me what critical process died.

After various attempts to fix the problem were unsuccessful I reformatted the drive and reinstalled Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.  The server seems to work okay with the intial re-installation of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.

I configured the server and then start to download all the availlable patches.  After one (or two?) reboots I typically find only a single patch (KB2919355) left to be installed.  This seems to be the equivalent of the Windows 8.1 Update (and thus a required patch to get further patches)?

Typically when I try and install KB2919355 I'll get a BSOD during the installation process.  I have also tried rebooting and looking for new patches, after the initial BSOD, and I'll get a list of some other patches.  KB2919355 seems to be a group of fixes?  And it seems as though some part of KB2919355 got installed, but then I get the BSOD.  And after the reboot what I'm seeing is the list of the group (from KB2919355) which did not get installed due to the BSOD?

I continued on (rebooting if a BSOD occurred) and eventually got all patches installed.  But I still get occasional BSOD failures with Critical Process Died message.  The message says something about writing information to disk with 0% complete, but that number never changes.  After a while the system simply reboots.

After all patches were installed I came across the following commands and tried to use them.  The first time I attempted to use DISM I got a BSOD failure.  But I was eventually able to run both SFC and DISM.  Neither seemed to show any problems were found.

sfc /scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

In one (of several) attempts to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 I made sure my BIOS was updated to the latest version and got the most recent driver for my Areca ARC-1222 controller.  Of the three servers one has the Areca RAID6 controller, one has an LSI RAID6 controller, and one is using Storage Spaces.  The LSI and SS systems have the same type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM. My Areca system has an older type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM.

This morning I tried to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 again.  After the first group of patches were installed and a reboot I got another large list of patches.  I don't recall off hand if this was the exact same order of patches that happened on prior attempts or not?  I had thought there was only one large list of patches, reboot, and then KB2919355 was the only remaining patch?  While trying to install this second large list of patches I got a BSOD.  I didn't notice whether or not KB2919355 was included in this second list or not?  These kind of inconsistent results/observations are why I'm not 100% sure that KB2919355 is causing my BSOD problems.  I believe KB2919355 is installed and working on my other two systems? Which might imply some type of a hardware problem with this system?

Unless someone has a better suggestion then later tonight I'll try re-installing Hyper-V Sever 2012 R2 again, but stopping before KB2919355 gets installed.  It seems to me the system is stable at this point, but I'll leave it that way for several hours to verify I don't get another BSOD.  If I don't have any problems without KB2919355 installed that implies my hardware is okay.  Although I suppose there could be some incompatibility between KB2919355 and my hardware and not simply a software problem with KB2919355?

I would appreciate suggestions others may have on how to rectify this problem.  Especially any thoughts on how to determine what critical process is failing and causing the BSOD.

I did come across a webpage about a whole list of symptoms related to KB2919355, but my specific problem didn't seem to be mentioned.

Thanks for any assistance.

Virtual Switch

I am currently running Windows 8.1 Ent. x64 and have 2 NICs (not teamed). I have created an "external" switch associated with NIC #2. I have also created 2 Windows 8.1 Ent. x64 and two x86 VM's. Only two have network connectivity (IP: 10.50.8.xxx) but the other two do not have connectivity (IP: 169.254.247.xxx)

Am I missing a setting that specifies the number of connections allowed per NIC?

HELP PLEASE!!!

Reducing the size of replicas

I have 2 server 2012 r2 servers that are replicating around 1gb every 5 minutes. Both of these servers are DC's with a few file shares on them. Even during the night when nobody is using the file shares they are still replicating large amounts of data. To test, i created a new server promoted it to adomain controller and it only replicates around 80mb on average every 5 minutes. Is there any way i can find out exactly what iscausing large amounts of data to be written? I have DPM on both the file servers, i don't know if that would make a massive difference.

2012 R2 Essentials as Hyper-V guest: creating Key for Client restore on USB

Hello,

i have a w12r2 essentials as a hyper-v guest. Now i want to configure the clientcomputer restore-wizard. In order to do this, i have to create a bootable key on a usb-stick. But there is no usb on hyper-v-guest? If i try to connect a usb-stick from host via remote desktop, this is only recognized as a network drive, and cannot be made bootable. How do i manage this?

we have tried already but just want to bounce off the list maybe we're doing it wrong. basically, is Windows clustering supported or doable with hyper-v VMs? we want to have two VMs share and use the same virtual drive. this is for a sql server clustering we want to do.

Hyper-V 3 Node Cluster unable to start virtual machines.

Hi Guys

I need some clarity on the following issue i have experienced with a 3 node Hyper-V Cluster.

Some info before i jump into the issue.

3 HP Proliant DL380 Gen 8 Hosts running Server 2012 R2 with all latest firmware patches and updates.

1 Dell MD 3200i SAN with 3 luns shared as a cluster shared volume to each host respectively.

The following happened:

2 of the hosts where placed into maintenance mode and certain VM's where gracefully shutdown for maintenance.

1 Host remained active with only a few critical VM's running in Production.

After the 1 remaining Host went down due to the UPS failing it was started up 2 mins later.

None of the virtual machines where able to start stating the the configuration file was missing I could not even edit the VM's.

After testing migrations, SAN connectivity, Cluster connectivity and CSV access all seemed 100%.

The cluster was up all nodes where visible and all VM's where showing on Failover Cluster Manager but not on the local Hyper-V manager.

I then proceeded to Technet that had an article regarding the .xml files being corrupt and something in the string has changed.

I even restored the .xml files from 2 week back with no joy in starting any VM on the environment not even the machines that have been gracefully shutdown. All VM's in the cluster regardless of the server they resided on would not start. Yet migrations worked CSV could be accessed and VHDX files all where visible and in tact.

The VHDX's could be mounted to new virtual machines and ran perfectly.

The only way I was able to bring the environment back up was to delete each individual VM from Failover cluster manager and re import them locally to the Hyper-V manager then re add them into the Failover cluster manager.

Surely doing this cannot be a solution as taking everything from HA to local then re adding cannot be the answer.

Is there any reason or explanation as to why the VM's even the ones that where gracefully shutdown would not start if one host fails in the cluster.

We have run a full drop test by turning everything off and starting it up again and it was successful.

Please feel free to comment if there is any additional information required to grant an explanation to this strange occurrence.

Thank you in advance

Regards
