Hyper-V Svr2012 Win8: Operation on computer {servername} failed

Hi,

Weird one:

We have a hyper-v server 2012. I'm trying to connect my windows 8 hyper-v manager to it.

Currently I am connected and can change settings (by right-clicking the hostname in the manager) and even create, export and import vm's, BUT in the Virtual Machines Pane, no vms are listed. I'm greated with the following msg instead:

The operation on computer {server hostname} failed.

I've configured dcom on both machines, WMI open on both firewalls. My user account has been added to the server and added to the hyper-v administrator group on both machines.

What am I missing?

VHD is corrupt or unreadable- no snapshots

I expanded the VHD but I did not have any snapshots of the VHD. The expansion went smoothly, the machine was working properly. Now all of a sudden the machine is saying that the VHD is corrupt or unreadable. I have tried to use the vhdtool.exe but I don't have any snapshots to repair it from. I have tried everything I believe, and rebuilding the VHD would be last case scenario.

Hyper-V Issue on Dell Laptops running Windows 8 with an External Drive: "Error: 'General access denied error' (0x80070005)"

$

Hello,

I cannot access any resources on my external eSATA hard drive when creating a VM in Hyper-V in Windows 8. This includes booting ISOs, making or using VHDs, etc. I receive the error "Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service account does not have permission required to open attachment 'D:\<file location>'. Error: General access denied error. (0x80070005)". There are a few other questions on the forums about this but they've been solved somehow or forgotten about.

I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this and solved the issue. I've attempted troubleshooting this issue half a dozen times over the past month. A number of employees at my company are dealing with it, all which have very similar laptop models. The similar characteristics seem to be:

- Windows 8 / 2012
- Solid State Drive for the system drive (which is why it's always dealing with the larger external drive)
- Dell e6420 laptop or similar model
- Drivers up-to-date according to Dell but still warnings in devmgmt for (at least) "Mass Storage Controller" and "Unknown Device"

This issue did not occur with the same configuration on Windows 7. It does not occur on previous generations of Dell laptops or on dissimilar models. VMs run just fine on the system drive.

Here are some of the tactics I've tried already:

- Setting permissions to Full Control for "Everyone" and the specific Hyper-V accounts in the UI and through icacls
- Complete reinstallation of operating system
- Firmware and driver updates even if they seemed unnecessary
- Removal of BitLocker from both drives and then again after re-encryption

Thanks in advance for any help... even if you're just pointing me in a general direction.

Hyper-V Server 2012 with Zambezi AMD FX-Series - Hardware assisted virtualization not present

Hi, I'm trying to set up VDI across Windows Server 2012 VMs running on Hyper-V 2012.

The wizard's compatibility check for the Virtualization Hostserver failed with "Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server".

I'm running an FX-8120 CPU and have the ASUS M5A97 motherboard.

I know I'm supposed to enable No-Execute (Hyper-V Hardware Considerations) but Icannotfind that or any other synonyms of it in my motherboards UEFI BIOS (NX, XD, EVP, XN... nothing).

I found this:

PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8

which in short says "Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 requires that systems must have processors that support NX, and NX must be turned on for important security safeguards to function effectively and avoid potential security vulnerabilities."

this leads me to believe NX is on by default if I was able to get this far and install Hyper-V 2012 and Windows Server 2012..

Also I tried to disable AVX in cmd with "bcdedit /set xsavedisable 1". Did not resolve

My processor is Zambezi FX-8120 and also supports RVI/SLAT:
processor: Newegg Processor FX-8120
support proof: AMD Processors with Rapid Virtualization Indexing Required to Run Hyper-V in Windows® 8

What going on here? I bought this CPU specifically after I had the same problems with an older AMD Athelon II and made sure to buy one with AMD-V and RVI.
I'm aware my MB is not a server motherboard, but I was trying to spend as little as possible to retrofit my home rig into a lab deployment. I've read a VMWare thread where someone successfully set up nested virtualization using ESXi5 with an FX-8120 and a cheap $65 Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 ... Hyper-V has been a pain the whole way through from setting up remote management and now this.

If someone suspects it's my MB can you also make a suggestion as to what features I should be looking for in a new one? NX, IOMMU, some other virtualization feature?
If you've had  similar set up, perhaps recommend an MB? Not looking to spend that much $150 max.

Thank you

Server 2012 Hyper-V with Server 2008 R2 Guest - Support External USB Drive?

$

OK, still working on
the setup of Server 2012 Hyper-V and I think I have followed directions
correctly but it's still not working.

I have a Server 2012 Standard GUI as a Host on a physical computer. I have a
Server 2008 R2 as a VM Guest. I hook up an external hard disk via USB on the
physical. I can see the USB on the Host. I then take it offline on the Host and
update the settings in the 2008 R2 VM Guest for SCSI Controller/Add Hard drive
and I point to the physical USB hard disk and select that USB External. I
restart my guest VM but when I go into Server Manager/Disk Manager I do not see
the disk. What did I do wrong?

I know there were issues with 2008 R2 Hyper-V but this is Server 2012 as the Host.  I need to figure out a backup solution for my server and was looking at doing just a backup of the VM Guest (as I can always quickly rebuild a host).  I am open to ANY suggestions.

Thanks!

I have succesfully exported a virtual machine from a 2008R2 Hyper-V host and I want to import the VM to a 2012 hyper-v host but I get an error:

"Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location blahblahblah"

Not sure why this occuring, I have tried the procedure with more than one VM. I have tried it with different R2 hosts and different 2012 hosts. I am not sure how to start trouble shooting this one.

How do I calculate percent guest run time?

$

I am looking at the query results for Win32 PerfRawData HvStats HyperVHypervisorLogicalProcessor and trying to figure out how to calculate percent guest run time.  The results return a large number and a base number:

PercentGuestRunTime : 670155741595
PercentGuestRunTime_Base : 9777664047245

The _Base number appears to be a Counter Type, as indicated here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/downloads/aa389383%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

But I have been unable to locate the Cooker Type formula for PercentGuestRunTime_Base, and that appears to be necessary to turn the metric into useful information.

The same problem applies to PercentHypervisorRunTime_Base, PercentIdleTime_Base, and PercentTotalRunTime_Base.

Hyper-V 2012 Standalone replica

Hello all,

I am trying to set up a POC using 2x Hyper-V 2012 standalone machines. 1 host has a virtual machine that is going to replication to another host across WAN.

I've read that if I am using two standalone boxes, I must use certificates for replication. I have installed a GoDaddy wildcard cert however when I try to enable certificate based authentication, I get a "No valid certificate found" error. I have checked the requirements based on this blog

http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2012/03/13/hyper-v-replica-certificate-requirements.aspx

but I still get same error. Any ideas?

Thanks,

DPM places server intoSaved state backup

$

Hi , we have a windows server 2008r2 server which is placed into saved state during backup operations even though DPM reports it will use child partition snapshots.

I have gone through the following but cannot find a condition as to why the server is being placed into saved state, is there any tools to run a check on the server to validate the configuration etc and check which method DPM will use to backup the guest.

Conditions when DPM fails to back up Hyper-V virtual machines in an online state

By default, System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) performs a backup of a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (VM) in an online state. However, DPM cannot back up a Hyper-V VM in an online state, if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
  • The virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
  • The virtual machine has one or more non-NTFS based volumes.
  • The virtual machine Cluster Resource Group in a cluster setup is offline.
  • The virtual machine is not in a running state.
  • A ShadowStorage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
  • An App-V drive is installed on the virtual machine that creates a non-NTFS volume.

These conditions are set by the Hyper-V writer. In such a case, the VM is put in a saved state before a snapshot of host volumes are taken (except when the VM is turned off) for a backup. The Hyper-V writer adds the VM in the following format:

  • For offline backups: Backup Using Saved State\<VMName>
  • For online backups: Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\<VMName>
noteNote
During offline/online backups, the name of the data source remains unchanged even if the VM configuration changes to support online backups or for any further backups.

Hyper-V Host and VM Shutdown Procedure - Looking for Official Word from MS

$

Hello all,

I have spent some time researching this and have found a lot of different opinions as to how you should shut-down Hyper-V and its Guests.

I've had a lot of success with properly configuring all my Windows Server 2008 R2 Guest OSes with the correct Integrated Services parameters to achieve this, however my boss vehemently feels I am doing this incorrectly and can screw something up.

Allow me to give a quick picture of the environment.

I have a single Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition with just Hyper-V Roles, on this Hyper-V Server I have 14 Windows Server 2008 R2 Guests (Ranging from Web to Enterprise), and all 14 VMs are configured with a staggered  Automatic Start parameter ranging from 1 seconds to 45 seconds with critical servers starting up sooner and less critical ones later (e.g. Secondary and Tertiary DCs up first, followed by Exchange, FS, and etc......), the VMs are also configured to auto send the Shut down command within Integrated Services when it detects the Host is shutting down. All these VMs are cleanly built, meaning no Physical to Virtual migrations.

Also we have Physical Primary DC (I'm not ready to trust Primary DC Roles in a VM yet)

I have been running this infrastructure like this for little over a year now (about 16 months +) and have not had an issue as a result of this, including after Patch Tuesday Sessions.

Now again I have found a lot of different opinions on this but what I am after is to see if Microsoft has weighed in on it with an official KB Article.

I have yet to find any mention of an official word, I have seen the occasional forum post of "Well I was on the phone with MS Tech Support and they said this ......", meaning I've seen it go either way, but again no official word, KB, or anything that can be considered as "You Should Be Doing it This Way"

Has anyone seen anything and can you share?

Thanks.

Swiching to Hyper-V 3.0 from VMware

$

I am looking to make the switch.. my questions today are:

1. Is all the HA with Hyper-V still dependent on failover clustering with CSV? I know we now have shared nothing LM but that seems to really only apply to proactive situation and not true HA. I assume this is also true with replicas?

2. What types of storage are you all using? I assume something iSCSI based? Any vendor recommendations? I love how things are looking with SMB 3.0 and SOFS but that still of course requires a solid underlying shared storage.

3. How are people migrating VMs from VMware? Native tools or something 3rd party like VEEAM? We plan to depoly SCVMM, would that assist?

Hardware for Home Lab - ESXi / Hyper-V

Hello All,

I'm lacking with hardware knowledge so I hope I can find some help here regarding the processor and motherboard.

My current home lab (3 physical servers) for vSphere and Hyper-V is slowly dying. I'm looking into buying something more current, but as I've got very limited $$ resources I need a box that would allow me to run a nested environment in either of the options:

- Windows 8 & VMware workstation, on top of that few VMs and 2 / 3 virtual hosts (HV2012/ESXi), on top of that a number of VMs to test Clustering/HA etc

or

- ESXi, on top of that VMs and virtual hosts (HV2012/ESXi), on top of that a number of VMs to test Clustering/HA

If possible, I'd like to use Intel i7-870 processor that I have at home, but I'm not sure if it's going to be enough for the job? If yes, please advice on the motherboard. Otherwise, please advice on hardware configuration or oem boxes.

Thank you!
A.

Please, advice me.

Hi,

I want to learn Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V. So, I got a new Windows 8 Pro computer and I think I have to choose between two options:

First option I think is setup a Dual booting between Windows 8 and Windows Server2012 (while creating a new VHD) and then setup Hyper-V for Windows Server 2012 from the Server.

Second option is Install a Hyper-V which came with a Windows 8 Pro and Install a Windows Server 2012 on the top of this Hyper-V.

Can somebody please give me advice which way is preferable for accomplishing my task.

Thank you in advance.

How to remove old HyperV hosts from HyperV Manager on Win7

Hi,

I use HyperV manager on my Win7 laptop to manage varios HyperV host servers.

2 of these have since been changed and no longer exist.

But my HyperV Manager console still shows them down the left hand side with red X in obviously as it cant contact them.

If i hit Remove Server - they go away for that session but just return next time i fire up HVM!

How can i permanently remove old host machines from my HVM console please?

Thanks

Dell R710 - Server 2012 - Hyper-v Role won't install

I've installed Server 2012 Standard on a Dell R710 server and I can't get the Hyper-v role to install. It has the roles of ADDS, DNS, File Server, and IIS. Goes through the process of install and says a reboot is required to finish the installation. During Windows reboot it say's "failure configuring windows features, reverting changes"....then boots w/o Hyper-v installed. I have the latest (6.0.7) bios and have Virtualization turned on. I have a pair of nic's teamed for the DC, a 3rd enabled and a 4th disabled. I selected the 3rd enabled single nic for the Hyper-v in the config. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hyper-V Server 2012 - Synthetic NICs not seen by Linux VM - Was working on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1

$

I have a Linux VM that I have been unable to get Hyper-V Server 2012 (non-GUI core) synthetic NICs to function.  I had this same Linux disto working with Microsoft's Linux Integration Services 2.1 on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and later reinstalled everything as Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1.  (I don't recall which version of LIS I used at that time, but I think it was 3.2?)

Since LIS integration worked with Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 using synthetic NICs and this Linux VM distro I would think it should also work on Hyper-V Server 2012?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

The problem I'm having is that I'm trying to use Linux Integration Services 3.4 RHEL58.  The installation seems to be fine.  When I reboot the Linux VM I see messages related to Hyper-V.  So all the drivers seem to have installed correctly.  During the reboot if I move the mouse over the Hyper-V Manager window for this VM I can see the mouse moving in the VM itself.  Before LIS is installed I have to actually click on the VM window in order to manipulate the mouse in the Linux VM.

But during the Linux VM boot eth0 and eth1 are not found.  I also found that if I issue an "ipconfig -a" command that I don't see anything in the output for my 2 Ethernet NICs.  Whereas if I issued the same "ipconfig -a" using Legacy NICs I do see them in the command output.

When I first used this Linux VM on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 I installed LIS 2.1.  But when I try and use LIS 2.1 on Hyper-V Server 2012 I get error messages such that it doesn't even install correctly.

The configuration which worked on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and R2 SP1.

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T6 CPU cores.  I believe I had 2 vCPUs (or 4?) for the Linux VM.
MSI 890GXM-G65 Motherboard
DDR3-1600 - 16 Gb (4 x 4 Gb) - 512 Mb given to Linux VM
Realtek RTL8111DL on Motherboard
Intel EXPI9301CTBLK installed in PCIe x1 slot
RAID5I don't recall total space.  LD1 was around 150 Gb.  LD2 (where VMs were installed) was around 2-4 Tb on GPT partition.
ClearOS 5.2CentOS 5 derivative
20 Gb Fixed Sized VHD on NTFS formatted volume

The configuration which is NOT working on Hyper-V Server 2012.  There are some differences (compared to the above configuration), but nothing which I would expect could cause my problem.  I don't believe I've ever tried running Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (or R2 SP1) on this Intel configuration. I assume it should work just as it had on the AMD configuration.  But perhaps that is not actually true?

I have other Windows VMs running on this Intel hardware and they're all using the synthetic NICs without any problems.  So the NICs themselves don't seem to be a problem.

My recollection is that Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 would install a virtual NIC whereas Hyper-V Server 2012 is installing a virtual switch.  Perhaps that has something to do with why I'm unable to get the LIS component installed?

Intel Core i7-37704 CPU Cores and 8 Threads.  6 vCPUs are assigned to Linux VM.  (Read some distros have problems with > 7 vCPUs.)
Intel DQ77MK Motherboard
DDR3-1600 - 16 Gb (4 x 4 Gb) - 2 Gb given to Linux VM
Intel 82579LM on Motherboard
Intel 82574L on Motherboard
RAID550 Gb C drive (LD1) formatted NTFS.  8 Tb D drive (LD2) formatted ReFS (which is where VMs are installed) on GPT partition.
ClearOS 5.2CentOS 5 derivative
20 Gb Fixed Sized VHD on ReFS formatted volume
3 Gb Dynamic VHD on ReFS formatted volume.  (After my initial problems I started using this dynamic VHD disk to make it simpler to clone VM configurations.)

Here are some tehnical details in the ClearOS forum about my current problem with Hyper-V Server 2012.

Server 2012 with Hyper-V Role & 4k drives

Ok, I'm also getting the sector size of the physical disks is not supported on my 2012 server with Hyper-V role.

Can anyone point me to the solution on Server 2012 as I thought 4k drives were supported (Even with Hyper-V).  I am in a pickle trying to figure out some way to utilize my disks (4x2TB WD REDs) and no amount of tweaking per other posts (dynamic GPT, 512 stripe, etc etc) has helped.  I haven't seen anything official about a patch / hotfix.

Specs:

Hardware RAID 0
Various stripe sizes
Dynamic GPT drive format
VHDx format virtual drive

I even tried creating a 1 TB partition but that didn't even work.

I'm about to try a SOFTWARE raid but I hope there is a better solution.

Thank you.

Display driver stopped responding and has recovered on RemoteFX VM

Hi, I'm experiencing problems with RemoteFx VM's "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". I found KB2519946.

I have installed this hotfix on vm's and host server then I updated video driver on host server to latest one. The problem "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" is still persist.

In client eventlog I see following warnings: ID 4101 Source Display.

Most errors  I see while browsing internet with IE. If I choose to use software rendering in IE I don't see this error but as I understand I don't use RemoteFX in this situation.

In host server event log I see following warning:

Event ID: 4

Source: RemoteDesktopServices-RemoteFX-Manager

Using CPU to compress because of insufficient GPU resources. [VM Name: vmName, VM ID: 9, Status Code: 2360303622]

Fix from KB2523676 is also installed. Steps from KB2501816 are already done.
