I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V enabled. When I try to create a new VM using Hyper-V, I am unable to find the Network card even though my computer has 3 NIC cards, which were detected in earlier days. Any help would be appreciated.

Hyper V Powershell - memorymaximumbytes does not accept input from read-host

Hi

I am trying to create a script which will copy a vhdx file and create a new vm using the hyperv cmdlets however I keep getting the following error message on the memorymaximumbytes

cannot bind parameter memorymaximumbytes. cannot convert value "4GB" to type "System.Int64". Error: "Input was not in correct format"

I have the 4GB value bound to a variable of $maxmem which is prompted for using the read-host cmdlet.

Any ideas on how I can get this working?

Thanks

Hyper-V PXE boot times out. Physical PCs PXE boot without problem

$

I volunteer at a Community Center that offers PCs for public use. There’s a single server (Server 2012 R2) and 20 PCs (W7 and W8.1) in the domain.

To support PXE boot and OS deployment, I'm using WDS and MDT 2013 (not MDT 2013 U1) on the server. All the PCs PXE boot and deploy without problem. But Hyper-V PXE boot times-out / no-response (have tried both Gen1 and Gen2 VMs). I believe (not 100% certain) PXE boots did work sometime past. But not working when i recently used Hyper-V again

At this point I removed then re-installed Hyper-V. I re-created VMs: Gen1 with a legacy network adapter and Gen2 with secure boot turned off. Both VMs get PXE timeouts.

Since PCs PXE boot without problem I’m guessing the Hyper-V PXE problem is probably in WDS or networking? IDK. Here’s a summary of config information. The zip file provided includes some snapshots and an ipconfig /all so you can also verify settings. Any help/advice appreciated.

  • WDS server is running
  • WDS PXE set to respond to all clients
  • WDS shows no pending devices
  • Network –Virtual switch is created. Server only has one network adapter. ipconfigbelow with tunnel info removed but full output is in the zip
  • VMS – Gen1 and Gen2. Gen1 has a legacy network adapter. Gen2 has secure boot turned off

Unable to Manage Server 2012R2 Hyper V Machines from Windows 10 Workstation

Hi,

I have 2 HyperV Servers - both running Server 2012R2.

I want to be able to connect HyperV Manager from my laptop to both servers and im unable to.

Both servers and my laptop are all on the same domain and same subnet.

It throws the error:

Check that the Virtual Machine Management Service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server. You do not have the required permission to complete this task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer.

Now my daily account is a Standard Domain Account with local admin priviledges on my laptop.

I have:

1. Added my standard domain account to the HyperV Remote Administrators Group on both servers

2. Run the hvremote /add:domain\account comand

3. Enabled remote management firewall rules. / Turned firewalls off both sides

4. Added standard domain user to Administrator Role in Authorization Manager

Still unable to connect to either server though.

Anybody steer me towards a solution?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

hope someone help me out with an issue I've been having for a while, long story short the guest Hyper V Machine CPU usage is running at 100% and I cant figure out why.

Setup

12 logical cores on the host,  6 logical cores (12 virtual processors) on guest with reserve set to 100%

any ideas on why this is happening or suggestions on how to fix would be great,

Thanks

One Volume with Two Disks and need to expand the first, how?

Good Morning,

Maybe I am missing something but I need some help.  Have a Hyper-V VM with one volume and in that volume there is a C drive of 95GB and a D Drive of 100GB, no big. We are using a PS-6100 for iSCSI Storage.  When I expand the volume on the 6100, then go to the Hyper-V Host and extend the volume no issues.  When I go to the VM the additional disk apace shows on D Drive and NOT D Drive.   Ii need it on C not D.  My research says this is a tough spot, rebuild the VM or try and remove stuff from C drive.  Either option will be tough. I am hoping someone has seen this before and can provide some answers.

  Ideas?

TIA,

Jim

I had to delete my snapshot to be able to expand one of the drives. After expanding I cannot start the system anymore. I still got the original VHDs and an an XML file in the Virtual Machines folder but that's all I got left in that folder. Is there a way to rebuild the system based on the VHDs and the xml?

Integration Services not working correctly

$

Hi all - I have an odd issue where my Integration Services are not working inside my guests - the SCSI and network are not being detected even after installation of the integration services component.

I have a server that i just installed the RTM of Hyper-V on.  I migrated my 2008 RTM virtual machines from Virtual Server 2005 to the Hyper-V server - but wasn't able to uninstall the VMAdditions before moving them.  So, I created the new guests on the Hyper-V box, attached the VHDs, booted the guests, and uninstalled the VMAdditions from withing the Hyper-V environment instead.  Then after that was done, and the guest was rebooted I installed the Integration Services.  After another reboot, the SCSI, network, and VMBus still aren't detected.  I've tried to reinstall the integration services in the guest OS, but still no luck.

Anyone having the same issue, or any suggestions on how I can fix this issue?

Thanks,

Scott

VM Migration Query

Hi Frenz,

I have 30 Physical Servers (Standalone Domain Joined) which are running 75 Hyper-V VM's (Physical Server OS: Windows 2012 , Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2003). Each Server is having their own Network Switch and VHD's are resided on both Local Hard disk and Remote Storage Device.

We have Procured 6 New Physical Servers and Installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (with 5*2TB LUN presented on all the Servers).

Plan:

We would like to create a 06 Node Cluster on New servers and Migrate all the 75 VM's to New Cluster and we have downtime available for all the VM's on Weekends

Query:

Kindly suggest a best practices to successfully Migrate the VM's including Network Consideration and Storage Movement etc..

How do I let the host machine "see" a DNS CNAME set in a VM?

$

I am using Hyper-V to run a VM with Windows Server 2008 (to run a SharePoint dev environment). I am not big on networking, and I have a problem that I would like help with.

My VM machine name is "Server2008", and I have set up the DNS within that machine to reach the web server with "http://share" rather than "http://server2008". So far so good.  I also set up a Virtual Switch in Hyper-V as an external network connected to my network card so that the VM can see the outside world (and so my PC can see the VM).

On my host, I can reach the web server using "http://server2008", but what do I have to do to be able o see it as "http://share"?

There are a lot of settings that I partially understand, but I am not getting the big picture - I need my host PC to be a client talking to the server in my VM.

Export VM with only system drive

Hi,

I have VM's and some will have large data disks separate from the system disk.  Is it possible to export a VM but to exclude large data volumes?

If not, is there another method of doing this?  Or do I simply have to shut down VM and copy the virtual disks?

Thank you

Very large files after converting VHD to VHDX

$

Hi,

On a Windows Server 2012 R2 I'm using the GUI to convert my disks from VHD to VHDX.
All goes well but my 8 GB dynamic VHD file gets about 60 GB after conversion to VHDX!!

I've also tried PowerShell with or without the -Dynamic parameter.

I have a couple of VHD files that do get a couple of GB larger then the original VHD file.

I've read articles on the net where you get around 145 MB extra on the VHDX but mine is getting huge in difference.

Any ideas why this is?

Kind regards,
Bhavesh

Hyper-V save state BIN file format

$

Hello,

is anywhere a detailed format description of the BIN file that gets created for SAVED STATE as well as for the SNAPSHOT/CHECKPOINT of running machines? I need the format used by 2012/R2 hosts. It seems the file is kind of smaller than the currently consumed RAM, thus I supposed it must be compressed in some way, right?

I thought it could be made public due to the Open Specification policy, but I didn't find anything.

Slow VM/VHDX performance on enterprise grade gear...

$

Hi All!

So I'm running into a bit of a problem with a new Server 2012 Core Hyper-V deployment. The VMs' disks are painfully slow. Here's a brief overview of the setup:

+ 2x HP Bl460 Gen 8's in a C3000 enclosure w/ 2x Flex-10 modules

     - Each server has 256GB RAM

     - Each server has a HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLB Adapter and a HP Flex-10 10Gb 2-port 530M Adapter

     - Each server has 2x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 0 @ 2.50GHz

+ A 6 node HP P4500 cluster with each node connected via two 10Gb NICs bonded

     - Servers are connected to the SAN via iSCSI using the MS iSCSI Initiator and HP Leftand DSM for MPIO for multipathing.

     - Jumbo frames are configured for the iSCSI NICs in the server, switch, and P4500 nodes (confirmed by "ping -f -l 8000").

+ The two Server 2012 boxes are clustered w/ MS Failover Clustering.

     - A quorum disk is provided by the SAN.

     - A 4TB LUN is presented to the cluster nodes as a CSV. (CSV Cache is enabled and set to 512MB)

     - Jumbo frames are configured for the physical NICs and logical MS teamed NICs for Migration and Cluster networks (confirmed by "ping -f -l 8000").

So, I'm experiencing severely bad perfomance with the VM's that reside on the CSV. The read times for the machines are pretty great and when running any kind of perfomance tool (e.g. ATTO, ioMeter, etc.) they return pretty decent marks. I think values reported by the tools may be a bit misleading due to them using rather small file sizes so cache is being used quite a bit. The VMs though are suffering pretty bad. Since this a new deployment of Hyper-V (trying to move over from vSphere), we've only migrated a few machines to test performance and validate the config before everything gets moved over. The boxes that have been moved, aren't where they should be, especially with the gear they are running on.

A repeatable test that I use to gauge the performance so far is just a simply file copy of a 2.5GB file. Inside of a VM, it starts off at ~100MB/s for a bit and then quickly drops down to ~20MB/s and then varies from ~20MB/s to a few KB/s. These results show up on thin and thick provisioned VHDXs, copying over the network or local on the same disk, and across disks. If I'm directly on the Hyper-V node, I can copy the same file to the CSV and I hit ~115MB/s steady for the whole copy. Also, if I deploy a VM the Hyper-V node's local disks I see ~115MB/s as well. It's only from within the VM's that reside on the CSV.

Since I can copy the same file to the same CSV that the VMs reside on from the node at full speed, I'm assuming that the iSCSI side of things are working but that doesn't appear to be the case since VMs can't copy that file to their VHDXs.

I'm kind of at a loss here and pulling my hair out (plus a few bruises on my forehead from beating my head against the wall). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Windows 10 Build 10240 Managing Hyper-V on 2012 R2 Datacenter Cannot Connect

$

So, we have a total of six Hyper-V servers in our environment. All six were installed from the same Server 2012 R2 Datacenter ISO. I have been managing these from my Windows 8.1 machine with no issues. I got ahold of Windows 10 build 10240, and I am running into an issue connecting to the servers now.

The strange thing is that I CAN connect to one of them. I cannot figure out what is different on this one server from the other five. Windows updates maybe? I migrated all the VMs off one of the servers I cannot manage remotely, performed all Windows Updates, and I still cannot connect to it.

I am reading that Windows 10 should be backward-compatible with managing Hyper-V on 2012, but on connection, it appears a WMI namespace is missing that the Windows 10 tools are trying to connect to.

I am not trying to use alternate credentials (I read this will NOT work from 10 to 2012 R2). Any ideas why this is not working? Several Google searches have not told me anything so far. I realize Windows 10 has not officially been released yet, but a few of us are testing the waters for compatibility issues.

I would appreciate any help anybody can offer.

Eric

Dynamic memory interpretation

I have set a counter for dynamic memory: Physical memory and guest visible physical memory in SCOM for performance collection.

The value for both the counter Physical memory and guest visible physical memory is the same i.e. 4GB.

Is it healthy? how can I interpret it?

How to give permission to manage only VM

$

Hi,

Here is our requirement. Customer has windows 2012 R2 hyper-v cluster. There are 4 VM's created on them (without OS). Now, Linux team wants to install OS on these VM's. For this they need access and permission to install Linux OS. We do not want to give access to hyper-v cluster. So, how do we give permission for them to work on these VM's so as to get their OS installed? I heard that azman is deprecated in windows 2012. There is no SCVMM in environment. Is it possible to install hyper-v manager console on their laptops ? What is the alternate option for azman other than SCVMM? Please help.

Hi All

i am having some confusion getting around this issue, i am using nic teaming in hyper-v 2012 R2,  i have created five Vnics from the team, now i have assigned the Management traffic 192.168.1.1 with gw 192.168.1.100,  now the issue is with the VM traffic how do i map the servers to that VM Nic adapter, should i assign ip (192.168.20.1)  , subnet without a gateway to the VM Vnic and tag the vlan on per VM basis (lets us assume it is on the vlan range 20),  another issue arises what if i have many VMs that resides in different vlans, should i create different adpaters?, the reason is i want to segregate Mgmt and VM traffic and assign different minimum weight on different VNIC. Can someone please clarify.

Show avaialable serial ports on Hyper V guest OS

$

Hi,

I'll be very briefed. I try to teach my students how to use Arduino kits and Intel Galileo under Windows and Linux environments. This is done using VMs that I give to them with all software installed so they avoid wasting time on installation and update of software.

The bottleneck I have is the ability to show the connected devices (Arduino and Intel Galileo kits) on Guest OS. (They appear on host OS as com ports). I read about piping but frankly don't know how to do it. I know com ports are easily configured on VMware but I encourage my students to use Hyper V especially with the integration of visual studio.

So assume I have COM3 on my host OS (Windows 10), can I make it appear on guest OS (Linux Ubuntu) ?

Thanks for assistance in advance.

What is normal range for CPU Wait time Per Dispatch on Hyper-V 2012

$

Hello.

I am trying to troubleshoot some performance issues with an application that utilizes sql server, which runs in a Hyper-V Guest.

I have found that the ram, cpu, disk i/o all appear to be within normal range.
Before troubleshooting the sql end of things, I wanted to make make sure the vm isn't waiting for cpu time.

In Vmware, the metric for this is " CPU Ready". From what I can tell, the equivilant to this for Hyper-V on server 2012 is:

Hyper-V Hypervisor Virtual processor\CPU Wait time per dispatch.

I have fired this up and been monitoring it and found that the average is around 22,000, maximum 41,000.

The problem is, I have no idea if this is a normal or acceptable range. I can't seem to find any further information on actually interpreting this data, as to what is acceptable and what will cause performance issues etc..

Can anyone help enlighten me further on this?

Thanks
