Windows 10 Build 10240 Managing Hyper-V on 2012 R2 Datacenter Cannot Connect

So, we have a total of six Hyper-V servers in our environment. All six were installed from the same Server 2012 R2 Datacenter ISO. I have been managing these from my Windows 8.1 machine with no issues. I got ahold of Windows 10 build 10240, and I am running into an issue connecting to the servers now.

The strange thing is that I CAN connect to one of them. I cannot figure out what is different on this one server from the other five. Windows updates maybe? I migrated all the VMs off one of the servers I cannot manage remotely, performed all Windows Updates, and I still cannot connect to it.

I am reading that Windows 10 should be backward-compatible with managing Hyper-V on 2012, but on connection, it appears a WMI namespace is missing that the Windows 10 tools are trying to connect to.

I am not trying to use alternate credentials (I read this will NOT work from 10 to 2012 R2). Any ideas why this is not working? Several Google searches have not told me anything so far. I realize Windows 10 has not officially been released yet, but a few of us are testing the waters for compatibility issues.

I would appreciate any help anybody can offer.

Eric

RDP to my Virtual Server fails and my hypervisor connection has no mouse. only a dot.

Strange issue, my 2012 hyperV server is running 4 servers 2008 mix with 2012.

one of my 2012 servers started acting strange towhen i RDP it, only shows a bday, and i have no checkpoints to revert since it's only been live for about 1 week.  When I RDP to the server (used to work) I get a black screen with the arrow then after about 1 min I get a failed to connect try again later. When I connect via hyper-v manager I can log in but my mouse is gone i see a dot, which moves with the mouse but doesn't give me any functionality.

I rebooted everything both server and hyper-v server and nothing, both are 2012 and updated.  I have seen old posts having similar issues, but their RDP works.  Any ideas what I can try before I revert to reformatting.

I've also done a check dsk and a /sfc scannow.

Enabling Hyper-V Replica causes Replica VHDX to be renamed to GUID format

I have been toying around with Hyper-V replica on 2012 and have run into an odd issue recently...

When I initially setup replication between 2 servers all seemed normal.  The path that was created on the replica server for replicated disks looked something like F:\VM\REPLICATED_VMs\Hyper-V Replica\Virtual hard disks\90D38095-0292-437C-88C0-75763446D8F9\MyServer.vhdx

Now all of a sudden the path that gets created on the replica server for replicated disks looks something like F:\VM\REPLICATED_VMs\Hyper-V Replica\Virtual hard disks\90D38095-0292-437C-88C0-75763446D8F9\F78BB460-823F-44B2-8AF7-583C30EB21E3.vhdx

The original disk on the primary server has the standard MyServer.vhdx notation.

I have no idea was has caused this to happen, has anyone else seen this before?  Did anyone get to the root cause?  I can rename this stuff manually but was hoping to get to the root cause.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Live Migration failing between nodes on 2012 R2 cluster (0x8007274C)

Hi All,

I've got a 3 node Hyper V cluster running Server 2012 R2 and live migration is failing between 2 of the nodes. Live migrations work back and forth from node 2 to all other nodes fine. Live migrations from node 3 work to all other nodes, Node 1 can live migrate to node 2 but fails when migrating to node 3 and gets the following error:

Log Name: System

Event ID: 21502

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXX' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'XXXX' failed at migration source 'Node 1'.

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'Node 3': A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (0x8007274C).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the source host: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (0x8007274C).

Failed to send data for a Virtual Machine migration: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (0x8007274C).

Looking around at other support articles on this it looks like this error code (0x8007274C) points to Virtual Machine Manager Service not listening on port 6600 but have confirmed it is listening on all nodes running netstat -ano | findstr 6600 and live migration does work on all nodes (just not one way between these two). Quick migration works fine from Node 1 to Node 3.

All Nodes are running the exact same hardware with the following nic configuration:

Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtreme 11 10 GigE cards.
Dual 10gbe ports teamed (traffic untagged at switch)
2 vEthernet adapters configured on teamed nic, one for management and one solely for migrations, each on different subnets.

Obviously this a tricky one to troubleshoot but if someone can give me any tips or tools I can use to further troubleshoot this it would be appreciated.

Cheers

WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered, error = 0x80240037

I have couple of VMs Server 2012 R2 RTM on Hyper-v Host running the same OS.

All machines including host and VM that is not in domain have an error in Windowsupdate.log:

AU WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered, error = 0x80240037

FW and UAC are off on all. There are posts on web discussing the same error but most of them connect this to WSUS or Config Manager. And it is clear because we are touching Windowsupdate.log when troubleshooting WSUS. And because WSUS on 2012 is BUGGY this error confuses too.

Finally, as mentioned earlier I deployed NEW server 2012 not from SYSPREP and did not place it to the domain. Updated the machine from MS update. Everything is OK beside the same error about COST :).

So now it is clear it has nothing to do with WSUS or Configuration manager. It indicates to some Network issue. But there is no clear answer. Some suggest just to ignore the error if everything is OK. But I would like to have a clean log. And it is just interesting what could cause the problem. Is it Hyper-V stuff or Server 2012 itself. Anyway I guess I am doing right by posting a question on HV forum since here are people that should know 2012 .

Thanks.

Update Hyper-V integration services to version 6.2.9200.20873

Hello,

We are facing some issues with Veeam backups on few VM's running on Hyper-V running Windows Server 2012. All the guests are running Windows Server 2008 R2 Std SP1.

So basically backup jobs on these 3 VM's have been failing. Have checked quite number of things and one thing we wanted to do was to update Hyper-V integration services. I have already now gone ahead and done integration services version upgrade to 6.2.9200.16433, however I don't know how to bring it up to 6.2.9200.20873??

When running upgrade again it says "the computer is already running the current version of IS 6.2.9200.16433"

Any ideas? Is integration services getting loaded from Hyper-V host itself?

thanks, Gary

Hyper V VM Machine lost Mouse (shows up as unknown device) in Device manager,

All of a sudden I have no mouse in my VM yet my other VM's running on the same server don't have problems.

To make matters worse when I RDP into the machine I get a black screen then I'm kicked out with a failed to login message

in the device manager I there are no mouse or pointers yet unknown devices. I've rebooted everything, installed guest services and integrated services.

WIN 2012 VM and WIn 2012 hypervisor. the mouse shows up as a dot, but has no functionality.

Hyper -V and SOFS on same server

Can HyperV and SOFS co-exist on the same cluster node?  NO Hyper-V will not be used to access the SOFS shares but instead have their own disks not part of SOFS.   SOFS will be accessed by other server outside of the cluster.

Up to this point I have only read that Hyper-V can not be used to access SOFS on the same cluster using loopback.  But in the proposed configuration, loopback is not part of the solution.

Hello all,

I have Hyper V core 2012 host(7 no.) & 36 Virtual machines hosted on it . After AD upgradation from 2008 to 2012 our hyper V hosts & virtual machines were unable to log on to domain remotely . They are showing error "please wait for local sessions manager". We tried to log on to servers physically, but the log on is very slow.

Virtual machine OS is Windows server 2012.

Please suggest..

I had to delete my snapshot to be able to expand one of the drives. After expanding I cannot start the system anymore. I still got the original VHDs and an an XML file in the Virtual Machines folder but that's all I got left in that folder. Is there a way to rebuild the system based on the VHDs and the xml?

XP/SP3 & Hyper-V RC1 - cannot upgrade integration services

I have two XP / SP3 vitrual machines, and on each one, after I dismiss the "found new hardware" wizard, and try to install the Integration Services, I receive the "A previous installation og Hyper-V integration services has been detected"

I click OK to "upgrade or repair", and I get the following error message:

"An error has occured: Fatal error during installation."

My event viewer doesn't seem to have any relevant information.

Ideas?

VM removed from cluster shows as clustered in Hyper-V manager

$

I have a 3-node Windows 2012 cluster running. My problem is that I have a VM that shows "Failed" status, but seems to run fine. When I run the dependency report, it shows two lines that reference a different VM that has been shut off and removed from the cluster.

Here's how I got here:

1. VM2 had PassThroughDisk1 attached to SCSI.
2. Shut off VM2
3. Removed VM2 from the cluster using Failover Cluster Manager
4. Changed PassThroughDisk1 assignment from VM2 to VM1 using Storage > Disks in Failover Cluster Manager
5. Attached PassThroughDisk1 to VM1 SCSI 0
6. Started VM1

VM1 starts and runs just fine. I can connect to it, SMB shares all work, including on the affected drive, no performance problems, etc. but in Failover Cluster Manager, it shows a status of "Failed" and all management options (Migrations, Connect, Start, Stop, etc.) are grayed out.

I'm assuming the problem is that between steps 1 and 3 I forgot remove the PassThroughDisk1 from SCSI on VM2. However, I can't remove it cleanly now because VM2 is no longer in Failover Cluster Manager, but when I view it in Hyper-V Manager it indicates that it's clustered and cannot be managed through HVM.

I tried to use Remove-VMHardDiskDrive to remove the disk from the stopped VM, but it just hung. At this point, I'm wondering if should just stop the management service and modify the configuration file directly (and, if so, would it make more sense to remove the clustered flag or the SCSI assignment), or just delete the stopped VM completely. The stopped VM is no longer needed, so it can be deleted if that would fix the problem. I'm just wondering what's the "cleanest" route to getting this fixed up? My end goal is to have PassThroughDisk1 attached to VM1 with a "Running" status and migrations available again, regardless of what happens to VM2.

Use same virtual Hard Drive in many virtual machines

Hi,

to do performance tests of our software I have a physical machine running several Hyper-V virtual machines with different OS and setup.
When I start a performance test only one of the machines ís running.
Each test run needs a volume to store about 1 TB of data. After each test run the data will be cleared and the data volume will be empty.

The physical hard drives does not have space for more machines having their own data volume. So I decided to share one virtual hard drive attached to all virtual machines. Due to the fact that only one machine is running at the same time it seems to work. But I don't know if there are any other impacts and if it is a good idea.

Any hints are appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hyper-V VM Generation 2

Hello

I'm installing Windows Server R2 foundation in a Vm Generation 2.

I can create the VM and start de setup. When setup is finished, it has to start de VM, and when it restarts, I get the error "Innaccessible_boot_device".

I believe it's a problem to write the boot sector, and so the disk can't start, but I don't know why.

If I try to install Windows Server Foundation in a VM Generation 1, and that works fine, but it doesn't recognise the mouse.

Any ideas?

Best regards

SSMS.EXE 100% CPU

We have more thn 1 2012 R2 hyper-v server. Only on 1 are we experiencing 100% CPU with ssms.exe process which slows other VM's way down. The way that i understand, smss.exe is there because we use dynamic memory. Is that why the smss.exe process is there? We use dynamic memory on all our hyper-v servers and i dont see sssms.exe on any other server much less using 100% of the CPU. All the hyper-v servers are hyper-v servers only meaning the host does nothing but hyper-v. They all have available memory both on the host. Seems there are 2 ssms.exe processes:

I can kill the process but it will eventually come back eating up 100% CPU and i have rebooted the physical server. When i kill the 98% process, the vm's work fine and everything appears to work but why is it there?
