Setting up an Internet connection on virtual machine

$

Hello, guys, i decided to use Hyper-V, because of its performance advantage over Virtualbox, but i have a problem with the Internet connection on the virtual machine. I get the Internet connection from my ISP through PPPOE connection and not just by placing LAN cable in my network adapter. I saw tutorials on the Web, but they are all based on getting the Internet connection directly through LAN or Wi-Fi without PPPOE. Could you tell me the steps for setting up my Internet on the VM for my case or point me to some tutorial or resource, etc.

Hyper-V Server 2012 with Zambezi AMD FX-Series - Hardware assisted virtualization not present

Hi, I'm trying to set up VDI across Windows Server 2012 VMs running on Hyper-V 2012.

The wizard's compatibility check for the Virtualization Hostserver failed with "Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server".

I'm running an FX-8120 CPU and have the ASUS M5A97 motherboard.

I know I'm supposed to enable No-Execute (Hyper-V Hardware Considerations) but Icannotfind that or any other synonyms of it in my motherboards UEFI BIOS (NX, XD, EVP, XN... nothing).

I found this:

PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8

which in short says "Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 requires that systems must have processors that support NX, and NX must be turned on for important security safeguards to function effectively and avoid potential security vulnerabilities."

this leads me to believe NX is on by default if I was able to get this far and install Hyper-V 2012 and Windows Server 2012..

Also I tried to disable AVX in cmd with "bcdedit /set xsavedisable 1". Did not resolve

My processor is Zambezi FX-8120 and also supports RVI/SLAT:
processor: Newegg Processor FX-8120
support proof: AMD Processors with Rapid Virtualization Indexing Required to Run Hyper-V in Windows® 8

What going on here? I bought this CPU specifically after I had the same problems with an older AMD Athelon II and made sure to buy one with AMD-V and RVI.
I'm aware my MB is not a server motherboard, but I was trying to spend as little as possible to retrofit my home rig into a lab deployment. I've read a VMWare thread where someone successfully set up nested virtualization using ESXi5 with an FX-8120 and a cheap $65 Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 ... Hyper-V has been a pain the whole way through from setting up remote management and now this.

If someone suspects it's my MB can you also make a suggestion as to what features I should be looking for in a new one? NX, IOMMU, some other virtualization feature?
If you've had  similar set up, perhaps recommend an MB? Not looking to spend that much $150 max.

Thank you

Having an issue with AMD Hyper-V.

It was working with server 2008 r2 sp1.

Coreinfo reported it has SLAT support and would work with Server 12 \ W8

AMD website lists my processor as having the necessary support for Server 12 \ W8

I flashed to the latest BIOS

------------------------------------

However, I cannot enable Hyper-V.  And the BIOS provides no handles that I can see - I've scoured it.

M5 A88-V EVO BIOS 1202

AMD Phenom II x4 975

Coreinfo reports SVM & NP are supported (*)

Help?

Thanks!

Hi

We are looking for a way to do Live Migration between 2 HV clusters. Previously we did shared nothing Live migration from stand alone Hyper V node to Hyper V Cluster nodes, but now have to migrate a few nodes between cluster nodes

Thanks in advance

An error ocurred while attempting to change the state of virtual machine XXX.

Hi guys,

I'm getting this errors trying to start some VMs. If the parent is restarted, they work again.
I have found no particular reason: a working VM after a Windows restart (in the child partition) stop working, stuck at "Starting 50%" and gives this error.

Ideas?

Thanks a lot!

Errors in Hyper-V Machine Manager

I have a newly installed 2012R2 server. I am running four (4) virtual machines under Hyper-V. Every time I go to do something with setting on one of the machines, or create a new machines I get errors saying that I was unable to complete the job - no reason give, just fails.

I have found that if I go into services and restart the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service, everything works for a period. I have noticed that the VSSWriter for Hyper-V goes off line with a failed (8) on the vssadmin list output. At this point my backups also start to fail and I get 'Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)' errors in the event log for all four (4) VMs.

I have checked the versions of integration services using the powershell script from the virtual_pc_guy archives (sorry, the system would not let me embed the link here) and all show as up to date.

I have also checked and all VMs have at least 90GB of free disk space.

This is frustrating me no end and is delaying the upgrades to our other two (2) servers currently running Hyper-V under 2008R2.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cannot rdp to the hyper-v virtual machine

I have a virtual machine on my server that I can connect via rdp internally using the ip address 192.168.2.119. I have also created a port forwarding address like:

external port: 3391
internal post: 3389
internal ip: 192.169.2.119

I have a dynamic dns that works fine for other machine using port forwarding. But I cannot connect to rdp on this machine using domain:3391

There was a similar problem about 6 months back and I randomly changed some settings and after that it worked. Now I am not sure what it was (trying everything and going crazy :)

I also changed a network card on the host machine (where the vm resides), however, every other port forwarding works except this one. Also cannot telnet to the domain:3389.

Router issue? Also wanted to mention that virtual machine ip address (192.168.2.119) is not showing up on my Router > Attached Devices screen.

Network issues with p2vdh XP machine

Hi,

I used the disk2vhd tool to convert an old XP machine to a VHDX file, and then created a virtual machine in Hyper-V on Server 2012 R2 with the vhdx file.

The system boots but I've been having tremendous difficulty getting the network working. At first it said that the NIC was unplugged, so I added a legacy NIC in the virtual machine settings and assigned it to my External network (the external network works fine on all other virtual machines).

The new legacy NIC now shows up in XP Network Connection as "Connected", but I have no internet access, and if I do an ipconfig it's not showing any IP address against that connection (with obtain IP automatically).

If I assign a valid IP address it seems to accept it, and still says "Connected" against the conneciton icon, but again when I perform ipconfig it has no information at all.

Any ideas please?

cannot start virtual machine

Hello

I am unable to start a newly created VM in hyper-v using Win Svr 2008 R2.

The issues I am having are similar to thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b26fe762-62eb-48ec-b538-ddeed61e1fae/after-upgrading-to-windows-2008-r2-cant-start-vms?forum=windowsserver2008r2virtualization

This is a locked thread so I can't respond to it.

Help is much appreciated.

I have tried to implement all the proposed fixes in the above thread but with no success. Now I'm lost, I have very little knowledge with VMs. PLEASE HELP! :) It's driving me nuts!

kind regards

Paul

Hyper-V VM Generation 2

Hello

I'm installing Windows Server R2 foundation in a Vm Generation 2.

I can create the VM and start de setup. When setup is finished, it has to start de VM, and when it restarts, I get the error "Innaccessible_boot_device".

I believe it's a problem to write the boot sector, and so the disk can't start, but I don't know why.

If I try to install Windows Server Foundation in a VM Generation 1, and that works fine, but it doesn't recognise the mouse.

Any ideas?

Best regards

Shutdown failure

My recently installed (Sept 1) Windows 10 refuses to shut down using the start menu "power" selection.  The menu seems to think that my shut down request is only a reboot command...which is what it does.  Shutdown can only be executed from the initial start page but from the standard start menu the shut down fails!  Is this a bug or what?  What if anything can I do to correct this ongoing issue short of reinstalling Windows all over again?

Thanks.

Frank L

PS.  Oh yes, the 64 bit, 16 Gig RAM, 8-layer 3.5 GHz AMD CPU system will also not allow me to restore it to an earlier configuration.  In other words, "Restore" does not work either even though everything else works normally.

Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V stand-alone, no cluster. I created new virtual machine. When I rebooted host, I noticed that creation date of the VM becames wrong, something of 01/01/1601.

VM creation date does not persists between Hyper-V host reboots or restarting of the VMM service.

[Hyper-V/General] How to prevent a restart

$

Hi,

is Hyper-V in Server 2008 R2 capable to restart virtual machines unexpectedly? I can't see in the logs of the affected virtual machines that a restart was executed by them. The physical Hyper-V server doesn't have any lack of memory, too. I can't also find anything unusual in the Hyper-V logs.

Further question: Is there a possibility to prevent that Windows will be restarted automatically after installing updates, even if there aren't any users logged on?

Windows 10 Client cannot manage hyper-v 2012r2 using power shell

Hello All,

So I have recently upgraded my workstation to Win10 and now none of my power shells that I use to manage my hyper-v 2012r2 cluster work.

For example if I run just the simplest command

Get-VM -ComputerName <hyper-v hostname>

Get-VM : The Hyper-V module used in this Windows PowerShell session cannot be used for remote management of the server '<hyper-v hostname>'. Load a compatible version of the Hyper-V module, or use Powershell remoting to connect directly to the remote server. For more information, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkID=532650.
At line:1 char:1
+ Get-VM -ComputerName <hyper-v hostname>
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (:) [Get-VM], VirtualizationException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : InvalidOperation,Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.Commands.GetVM

Anyone else seen this and know how to load the older hyper-v modules?

Thanks

Chris

HyperV 2016 convert the file format between vmcx(new) and xml(old)

The configuration file before windows 12 R2 is the xml format.  and the new config file for HyperV16  is the vmcx format.  I wonder the convert when upgrading  and how to read the real content of the vmcx file, instead of the binary content.

How to enable SR-IOV (intel 82599 adapter) Hyper-V CORE

I am trying to configure SR-IOV, I am following the document from Intel, the servers are Windows 2012 Hyper-V CORE. The documentation says that from Device Manager / Network Adapters / Advanced / SR-IOV Value Enabled.

Since they are CORE Hyper-V I don't have access to GUI and can't be installed. That being said, can anyone please let me know how do I enable this setting?

How to delete snapshot/checkpoint WITHOUT applying ANY changes? How to get rid of snapshot/checkpoint FOREVER?

How to delete snapshot/checkpoint WITHOUT applying ANY changes? How to get rid of snapshot/checkpoint FOREVER?

If I apply snapshot/checkpoint, ok, i´ll go back in time, but the snapshot/checkpoint will be there, am I right?

If i delete the snapshot/checkpoint, the snapshot/checkpoint will gone, bt all changes will be applied, am I right?

hypotetical scneario:

Developers ask for a snapshot/checkpoint, so i create, now i have a snapshot/checkpoint

developers did a lot of changes and one month later, they decide: you can go back in time, reverting snapshot/applying it, making the VM as it was before.

But the developers are satisfied and they don´t want to create any further snapshot/checkpoint, they don´t need extra modifications, the need to keep things as ever be,.

I need to get rid of the snapshot/checkpoint, without applying and making sure that the snapshot/checkpoint will be gone and making NO modifications at all in the VM.

What is the best way?

How does 2012R2 CSV 2.0 handle backups?

$

Hello,

Just wondering how backups should work with a failover cluster running on 2012R2. From what I have read Direct I/O should be used in 2012R2 when running a virtual machine backups instead of redirected access in 2008. I am expecting that when a backup is taken that the VM backed up will access the data from its local ISCSI connection no matter which node the CSV is owned by.

What I am seeing is that if the VM and CSV are on different nodes the disk access is run over the management network connection from the CSV iSCSI owner to the VM owner and then sent to the backup server. This causes a reduced backup speed. The CSV stays in online mode and running Get-ClusterSharedVolumeState shows all volumes in direct access still. We have no 3rd party hardware VSS providers and this is happening on 2 separate clusters.

What I am trying to figure out is this how it is supposed to work or not? Is anyone able to help me with this? I have spoken to Symantec who now say it is a Microsoft issue but have not confirm this is expected or not.
