VHD file grew very large after deleting snapshots - question.

I will keep this as simple as possible.  I am running a Win 2k8 r2 server with hyper-v.  I have a web server VM that I had created a few snapshots over about a year.  I wanted to remove the snapshots so I went thru the process of "delete snapshot".  I then turned off the VM to let the merge process run.  After the merge was complete and the avhd files were removed I was left with a vhd file that was almost twice as big as it started.  I expected it to grow a little bit but 90% you gotta be kidding me!!  Can anyone tell me why it grew so large and is there anything I can do to reduce the size?  I have learned my lesson.  I won't be using snapshots much any more.   thanks, tom

Hyper-V and SmartCard USB Readers

We're running a number of Hyper-V W2K8 R2 servers, and need to be able to authenticate using smartcards through a USB smartcard reader.  Unfortunately, Hyper-V doesn't allow for USB devices.

Anyone have a solution to this issue?

Hyper-V - Wich NIC to choose

Hello

I have a physical server in wich I instaled  Windows Server 2012 R2. This server as two NIC and I have created one NIC Team.

My plan is too install hyper-v on this physical server and then inside the hyper-v I will create my PDC server and my virtual machines.

My question is, whwn I'm installing the Hyper V in the phisical server, wich NIC should I use? The Nic Team, or should I leave one nic to aceess the physical server and select the other to use in Hyper-V?

Hyper-V 2012 R2 with gen 2 VM. We have a JBoD attached to the server via SAS. We need to be able to use this JBoD. So when i add the physical disks to the VM using hyper-v manager, the VM will not start. Can you use physical disks with gen 2 VM's?

Live Migration failing between nodes on 2012 R2 cluster (0x8007274C)

Hi All,

I've got a 3 node Hyper V cluster running Server 2012 R2 and live migration is failing between 2 of the nodes. Live migrations work back and forth from node 2 to all other nodes fine. Live migrations from node 3 work to all other nodes, Node 1 can live migrate to node 2 but fails when migrating to node 3 and gets the following error:

Log Name: System

Event ID: 21502

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXX' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'XXXX' failed at migration source 'Node 1'.

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'Node 3': A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (0x8007274C).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the source host: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (0x8007274C).

Failed to send data for a Virtual Machine migration: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (0x8007274C).

Looking around at other support articles on this it looks like this error code (0x8007274C) points to Virtual Machine Manager Service not listening on port 6600 but have confirmed it is listening on all nodes running netstat -ano | findstr 6600 and live migration does work on all nodes (just not one way between these two). Quick migration works fine from Node 1 to Node 3.

All Nodes are running the exact same hardware with the following nic configuration:

Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtreme 11 10 GigE cards.
Dual 10gbe ports teamed (traffic untagged at switch)
2 vEthernet adapters configured on teamed nic, one for management and one solely for migrations, each on different subnets.

Obviously this a tricky one to troubleshoot but if someone can give me any tips or tools I can use to further troubleshoot this it would be appreciated.

Cheers

VMMS.EXE Strangeness?

Hyper-V 2012 R2. I had to delete some hyper-v VM's on 2 hyper-v servers. I google how to completely remove hyper-v vm and here is how i deleted the vm's:

  • delete vm from hyper-v manager
  • login to the hyper-v server and delete the virtual disk

So i need to recreate the vm's using the identical vm info. Like computer name and ip address. I also used the exact same name in hyper-v manager. Now, the 2 that i have recreated are doing odd things! Like windows updates, there will be 66 updates. I install those 66 updates and the download of these updates will not complete (stuck at 5% downloading). Then i restart the vm and try again, this time the download completes but the install gets to all 66 and then, instead of needing to reboot, the update client says"updates complete". Then if you "check for updates" all 66 still need to be updated. This oddity happens on both the vm's. Both the vm's also are performing poorly. These 2 vm's have the exact same specs as the ones i deleted with the exception of the new vm's are gen 2 and the old vm's were gen 1. Also, if i add physical drives to the vm, it will not start.

So, does the hyper-v server hold some info of the old vm's? Maybe i did not remove the old vm's completely somehow

Replica - potential corruption issue

Hi everyone

We're using HV's replica feature extensively. We regularly test the VM failover and the replica VMs start up fine and we can log in.

However, more recently, we decided to do a more extensive comparison of the VMs.

So we shut down 6 VMs on the primary site, waited for the remaining changes to replicate to the DR site and then did an MD5 checksum (using FCIV) on the VHDX files on the primary and failover sites. The results were a bit concerning - 4 out of the 6 VMs were identical, but the other two each had VHDX files which were different.

Unfortunately we did not have enough time to compare the contents of files within the VHDX files to see which ones were in fact different.

Any ideas why some of our VMs appear to be out of sync? Could this be a bug with the replica feature?

Thanks

Failover Cluster Manager showing different free space

$

I was just about to move some virtual storage, and thought I would double check free space.

According to my Failover Cluster Manager for the disk in question I have 1.73TB free of 5.45TB.  Ok in itself and enough for what I need, however, I believe I should have almost another TB more.

If I look at the CSV in question using Windows Explorer for example, including hidden files etc etc, it is reporting far less used space and is showing what I would have expected on the disk.

So how do I identify this "lost" space?

Regards

Ian

sudden speed drops

Hello,

I've been struggling with a strange problem. Out client runs an environment with Windows Server 2008R2 running Hyper-V. There are four guests all running Windows 2008. He claimed about poor performance lately. The outcome of checking speed with Iperf from one VM to the other is that the speed is about 500-600 MBit/sec, but it often drops to 2.62 Mbit/sec (quite a jump) for some time. It kind of alternates between the high and low speed with practically no middle ground.

I tried a different NIC (original Broadcom, new Intel) with no difference. I tested with disabled/physically disconnected network. No change. The only difference is when there are people logged in and working, the drops occur more often. Anybody has any idea what could it be/what to check ?

Failover Clustering Optimized CSV Placement Policies in Windows Server 2012 R2

$

Hi

With regards to Optimized CSV Placement Policies in R2. We have a complicated storage backed with a stretched Failover cluster across 2 datacentres. I would like to be able to set preferred owners for the CSV's, so that they are only owned by a node in the datacentre that is connected to the storage locally.

In 2012 this was ok, because I could set the CSV owners manually with cluster.exe command and they would not automatically change if I added a new CSV or Node.
Because R2 has these new Optimized CSV Placement Policies, every time I add a new csv or node the policy kicks in and moves the CSV owner to a node in the other datacentre.

Do you have any ideas about what I can do?

A the moment I'm leaving the nodes in the other datacentre paused to prevent them owning the CSV, but its not ideal if I have a Datacentre failure.

Our storage systems are 2X HP 3PAR 7200 array's in each datacentre synchronously replicated via HP remote copy. We also use the HP cluster extension software for Microsoft failover Clustering to manage VM placement.

Thanks
Ben

Visual Studio Emulators for Android doesn't work on Windows 10

Hi,

When I try to start emulator the start task fails, with message like below.

10.08.2015 14:06:01: [Critical] Unable to add user to the Hyper-V Administrators group. Exit code 2220.

I was using it on Windows 8.1 where it worked well on the same PC. This proves that my PC meets all requirements and it is properly configured. After clean install of Windows 10 emulator doesn't work.

Hyper-V on my PC is running well. I can create and run 32 and 64 bit vm's. There is problem with creating android vm's by vs emulator. There is no group "Hyper-V Administrators" and it can't be created.

Tried these solutions:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/09/28/creating-a-hyper-v-administrators-local-group-through-powershell.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/01/17/allowing-non-administrators-to-control-hyper-v.aspx

also i tried to recreate InitialStore.xml for Hyper-V with needed group and operations but without success. It seems that hyper-v bundled with windows 10 doesn't require any special group to run, create, manage and remove vm's, switches, etc. Emulator thinks different and it can't assign me to group which does not exists.

Checkpoint apply/delete errors when using partitions mounted to a path

$

We have a development environment that started out running on Windows Server 2012.  Since its a development environment with local attached storage (NOT SAN) and a lot of snapshot/checkpoints on the VMs we set it up a bit differently than you would a production Hyper-V environment. The VMs are all setup with dynamic VHDX files located in their own partition, the partition is mapped to a path c:\VMs\VMName.  This worked great under WS 2008 R2 and WS 2012.

Then we upgraded to WS 2012 R2.  When we did that we started noticing a problem with VMs with checkpoints.  Applying to different checkpoints in the same VM would often fail.  The error tracked down to not being able to find the AVHDX files generally.

So we got a new server in and set it up with WS 2012 R2 and set it up the same way with mounted paths to the partition.  Same problem occurred.  I then took the same VHDX file and set up a new VM on the same machine and used a drive letter mapped to the partition and no problems at all.   So it looks like the issue is using path mounts for the partitions instead of drive letters.

We went to this system largely because it let us get away with smaller partitions without worries of disk fragmentation.  Yes I know WS 2012 does disk defragmentation, but if you can avoid the issue in the first place...  Our other issue is we have more than 26 VMs so there aren't enough letters available to do the job unless we start putting multiple VMs on a partition.

I tried searching for a KB article but came up blank, largely probably because of the huge number of hits a search like this would turn up for everything but what I want.  I can figure out a workaround, but what I'd really like is a fix.  Has anyone seen this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hyper-V Server Setup

I recently got a Dell 710 server with a perc 6/I, 128 GB RAM and 6 2 TB disks. The server came preloaded with 2008 but I intend to load Hyper-V 2012 server and use it as a host for various numbers of VM.

Currently disks 0 and 1 are setup in a RAID 1 configuration and disks 2-5 are configured as RAID5.

This does not seem like the best configuration in my mind for its intended use,

What do you recommend?

Thanks,

Chris

During a UPS shutdown/startup, will Hyper-V gracefully handle all my VM servers assuming I've setup the shutdown/startup settings in Hyper-V?

Hello,

Windows Server 2012 R2 w/GUI

I am trying to finalize the setup of my first server system.  It is connected to a UPS that will issue a shutdown via USB if the AC Power fails.  At present I only have the host system setup, but will be adding the VM servers shortly.

I just wanted to confirm Hyper-V will keep the OS running while it shuts down the VM servers and also find out if there's anything else special I need to look out for.  The server auto-starts when AC is restored, and I am assuming Hyper-V will handle the startup processes gracefully as well.

Thanks.

Domain Controller in Hyper-V environment

Fairly new to Hyper-V but do have some VMware experience. Just installed a new Server 2012R2 Standard server and configured it with Hyper-V role. Have installed one VM server using Server 2012R2 Standard as well; anticipate 1 or 2 additional VM Servers in the future. Both the Host and the VM server have been added to the existing 2003 Domain. The VM server has been promoted to DC and all FSMO roles have been transferred to it. It is planned that the current 2003 DC will be demoted and disconnected once it's application & data have been transferred to new VM server.

I have read that the Host should only run Hyper-V role and nothing else but I am leery of running DC only as virtual. I would like to make the Host a DC and transfer all FSMO roles to it; as well as maintain the VM server as a backup DC. Is this a good idea and license legal? End result will be a domain with one physical server running 1-3 Hyper-V VM servers.

Host was configured with a 150GB logical drive. There is a second 700GB logical drive that runs the current VM and contains the VM files. One gigabit NIC is configured for the host 7 3 gigabit NIC's are teamed and assigned to the VM currently. If/when additional VM servers are added additional storage will be installed and configured as logical drives for each VM as needed.

Thoughts and ideas welcome. Thanks.

I have a Windows server 2012 standard running hyper v, on that I have two VMs 1 is  a domain controller for the network it is the only dc on the network. it is also running windows server 2012 standard, the domain controller has recently been losing internet connection, when I restart the dns client service connection returns, there are no events in the event viewer that could explain it. If I try to browse to a website and the run troubleshooter I get the error "website  is online but isn't responding to connection attempts" I can ping web addresses and get a response. The host doesn't lose connection at all it's just the VM.

Network issues with p2vdh XP machine

$

Hi,

I used the disk2vhd tool to convert an old XP machine to a VHDX file, and then created a virtual machine in Hyper-V on Server 2012 R2 with the vhdx file.

The system boots but I've been having tremendous difficulty getting the network working. At first it said that the NIC was unplugged, so I added a legacy NIC in the virtual machine settings and assigned it to my External network (the external network works fine on all other virtual machines).

The new legacy NIC now shows up in XP Network Connection as "Connected", but I have no internet access, and if I do an ipconfig it's not showing any IP address against that connection (with obtain IP automatically).

If I assign a valid IP address it seems to accept it, and still says "Connected" against the conneciton icon, but again when I perform ipconfig it has no information at all.

Any ideas please?
