Routing capabilities in vSwitch - NO Guest OS to do routing between LAN/sVLANs

0
0

Insted having an OS doing routing between LANs, there is a vSwicth or a vSwicth plug-in, to do routing between VMs?

I´t very common to have multiple LANs (and sometimes VLANs) separated by vSwitchs and it will be usefull to do routing (even a basic routing, with no filter capabilities, just simple Layer3 routing) inside the vSwitch, avoiding to have a dedicated VM do do that.

I know that a Linux instance and multiple NICs will do the job easily with a low footprint, i know that a simple WIndows OS and it´s ipforwarding in registry do the job, but i think that for a development environment will be nice to do all routing between vSwitchs in Hyper-V level, almost like a SDN

There is such thing? Free? Where?

Hyper-V Cluster Node - Cluster Shared Volumes not mounting

We have a 2 node hyper-v cluster.

One is OK.

The second, the cluster shared volumes don´t map.

In System logs, I see:

Event 1069 - "Cluster resource 'XXXXX_QUORUM' in clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' failed."

Event 5142 - Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume13' ('XXXXX_APP') is no longer accessible from this cluster node because of error 'ERROR_CANT_ACCESS_DOMAIN_INFO(1351)'. Please troubleshoot this node's connectivity to the storage device and network connectivity.

This last event occurs once per csv.

I ran Cluster Validation (Except for the storage tests), everything is OK, except for the updates, some updates are different.

I have already rejoined the second node to the cluster successvully, but the problem persists.

Any Idea in how to troubleshoot this problem?

Hyper-V Server Core 2012 R2 Remote Management for Workgroup using Windows 10

This is my first time using the forums and I like to thank you for your help.

First of all I am new to Hyper-V and to PowerShell. I do have an IT background.

I wanted to learn more about both topic and when I found Hyper-V core was free and I did not need to pay for the windows server with Hyper-V, I had to jump in.

Now I am at a standstill.

I have been able to make a VM using PowerShell and set all the parameters that I can understand but I don’t have any way to get into the OS that I am installing on to the VM.

To manage the server I have only windows 7 that seems to not work with Hyper-V R2 or I have windows 10 and this seems to not have any documentation at all. I am not on a domain and am unable connected to the server using the Hyper-V Management tools.

I have read several articles that I can setup remote management in a workgroup environment with some extra configuring but those instruction are for windows 8 and seem to not work for windows 10.

If you can help me configure windows 10 to allow me to remote into the Hyper-V server and finish installing the OS, I can continues with my little learning project.

Processor compatibility with HP DL380 G8 and G9

We are buying a new server to add to a current Hyper-V cluster (Windows Server 2012 R2). The current servers are all DL380 G8s. The G8 servers use  E5-2660 while the G9 will use a E5-2640v3. Does anyone know if I will need to enable processor compatibility to seamlessly move VMs to a DL380 G9?

KB2920189 fails to install on generation 2 vm's

It looks like there is a problem with the KB2920189 update.

When trying to install it via Windows Update on some servers, they all fails the installation of this update - they are all running 2012 R2 inside generation 2 Hyper-V machines.

Has this update been tested with the UEFI implementation inside Hyper-V?

what is formula or logic of purchasing HYPERV

what is formula or logic of purchasing HYPERV or VMware for instance if I buy HP G8 server 2 processor and 120 GB RAM so how many VM's I can allocate what is the formula?

HYPER V uses fail over cluster

HYPER V uses fail over cluster and VMware uses HA and DFS so which one so effective I guess fail over cluster means if host is not sending heart beat all installed VM's will move into another Host in Hyper V?

I wan to know if there is any limitation about length of vhd/vhdx file path in hyper-V vm.

I want to create a vm using Hyper-V manager which has a vhd/vhdx file having path length more then 260 characters.

Also if we can create such a vm then can VSS writers supports backup and restore for same

DPM 2012 R2 Exchange Sync Schedule

Hi,

I would like to change my sync schedule of exchange protectiongroup and do not know how to set it up correctly.

My Backup contains hyper-v and exchange backups in different protection groups.
The hyper-v backup runs at 22:30, the exchange backup at 20:30 with hourly sync.
While the hyper-v backup is running the sync job of the exchange protection group fails.
My goal is now to set the hourly sync job with a exclusion from 22:30 to 23:30.

How can I do that?

Thanks.

With kind regards,

Missing Virutal Machines on hyper v

Hey there

I have 30 Vm's running on a server core 2008 data center host server core.  I added this server to the Virtual machine manager 2008 beta.  22 of the VM's showed up and 8 were shown as missing.  After this, I couldn't even see the 8 VM's in hyper v manager on another server.

So I decided to remove the host from VMM 2008 beta hoping they would show up in hyper v manager.  that did not happen.  So now, I have 30 Virtual machines running on the host, and I can only see 22 of them.  I can ping the 8 VM's I don't see, so I know they are up and running.

Is there any way to get these VM"s to show up in the hyper v manager console?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Export Import of a running VM between 2 Hyperv fails with Corruption message

Hi All,

here is a very strange issue.

I had to recover a failing 2 nodes HyperV 2008 R2 cluster. I do not know the history of this environment.

The issue is that several VMs do not move to node 2 and the customer ended up adding VMs directly in node 2 without using CSV.

I dowscovered an SCVMM deployed on an additionnal hardware. The agent was deployed on node 1 but not on node 2. However SCVMM was complaining about node 2 not responding. Has it been deployed once ? I could not find any trace of SCVMM in the registry and on the disk. I finally remove it from node 1 as we will move soon to a new 2012 cluster in a new domain.

I tried to export VMs installed locally to the CSV and then Import them again to put them back on the cluster here is what Happens:

  • if I export the VM from Node 2 and import it I can live migrate it ok between node
  • If I export it from Node 1 and import it, the live migration start then reaching almost 98 % it fails. On node 1 it state that it has been cancelled externally ! On node 2 it says taht the VM config is corrupted
  • I tried exporting from node 1 to import on node 2 it states that the VM configf is corrupted
  • I tried creating new VM on node 1 and one new on node 2 and succeeded in importing each of the newly created VM on the other Node

I noticed the the Config file shows different IDs but do not know if it is normal or not

I attached 2 config file DC203 move ok between nodes whereas DC201 does not !

Thanks in advance for any help

Cheers

Best method for sharing files on dev enviroment

0
0

I have created a dev environment that must replicate some of our VMs on our live network, meaning same hostnames and IP addresses of the VMs will be the same on both environments.

My two methods of sharing files between the two environments is by using .ISO files, or to change a VM from live network to dev network. Both methods work okay but can be a little annoying. Creating ISO files takes time. Moving a VM from two different networks often has Domain Controller related issues. Is there a better way to achieve this? I can not have a VM connected to both networks because the dev and prod networks use the same subnet.

Does Hyper-V support VHD sharing on two different networks? So two VMs on two different networks using the same vhd(x).

We are using Hyper-V 2012R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs.

Stumped! this one's out there.

Ok so we have a DELL power edge T320 running windows server 2012 R2 Hyper V with 3 virtual servers DC, File server, and a windows 7 machine. We are having a problem where whenever something is plugged into the same power source (outlet or ups) the DC and the File server CPU spike to 98-99% and local network is sluggish at best probably because the DC is running so high until the hyper V is rebooted. Obvious solution is to NOT plug anything else in but I'm trying to figure out WHY.....

Thanks for any help or knowledge

Sanity Check- trying to make sure we are correct and optimal

We have a 2-node Hyper-V setup running on Server 2012. Servers are identical IBM x-series and the SAN is a v3700, running with 2 nodes. Each Hyper-V host has two FC HBA's, and they are wired so that FC HBA 1 on server 1 goes to the first FC port on the node 1 HIC, FC HBA 2 on host 1 goes to the first FC port on the Node 2 HIC. There are no switches in between. The second server is the same setup, using the second ports on the FC HIC's in the SAN. all the link lights look good on the FC connections, and everything has been running smoothly for almost a week. This setup has been almost maintenance-free and in production for 18-24 months, until a few weeks ago. For some reason, the hosts began losing their connection to the SAN, which causes VM's to freeze, and general pandemonium in the office. The problem was seemingly resolved by replacing parts in the SAN, and the storage cabling is currently connected as I previously mentioned, however the process of mitigating the sudden failure of our virtual infrastructure (Happened about 6 ties in three weeks) has left me with questions about best practices with this setup- I'm interested in any advice, especially when it comes to Hyper-V settings and best practices to deal with this kind of situation. We are setup in what I consider a basic failover cluster- there is a cluster and a quorum disk, and the hosts deal with the storage and the VM's are running from VHD files. Settings are managed from the Failover Clustering manager for the most part, and the VM functionality is managed from the Hyper-V manager. We do not use any software outside of the tools that ship with Windows Server 2012, except that we use BackupExec 15 for backups. We started having our issues when we started using the software to try to use its addins to back up the guest machines- the problem is that we don't know if the problem was caused by the backups or by the hardware, which mysteriously failed at the same time we tried to implement the BE solution. I did notice that NUMA is enabled in our Hyper-V system, but the guests are generally low-throughput systems- we have a printserver, a fileserver, a couple of web application servers (running things like WSUS, a CAS server, SharePoint for a 5-person workgroup, and a couple of terminal servers- roughly 10 guests split by memory use across two hosts). I don't want to make changes unless there is a benefit, either reliability or efficiency, but I just want to make sure that relevant settings are crrect for this kind of setup. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Will there be support for Windows 10 as a guest VM for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2

Hello, Will there be support for Windows 10 as a guest VM for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2? I see that Windows 10 support will be available on Hyper-V in Server 2016, but I wonder whether we can expect some sort of an update that will also provide support to run Windows 10 as a guest on Hyper-V in Server 2012 R2.

How to decommision Hyper V VM?

0
0

Dear Hyper V Expert,

We are running Windows Server 2012 Standard as the Hyper V Server and there are some VMs running Windows Server 2008 R2 inside. One of the VM will need to decommission as it is old server and we have done the backup. What is the best procedure to decommission the server? is it just by deleting the VM then all the VM related file such as .VHD/.VHDX or XML will be deleted?

Thanks.

Regards,

H

Can you delete a VM in hyper-v manager then copy to another drive then reassociate with this vhd with another VM?

0

So we are unable to export this VM.

Can we delete this VM from hyper-v manager then create a new VM.

Next we want to copy the folder with the original VM folder to  D drive from E drive on the same hyper-v host.

Next we want to reassociate this original VDX file in the VM folder that has been moved to D drive with a newly created VM on this same hyper-v host.

Will this work??  When we turned off the server then attempted to export it fails to complete.

Errors in Hyper-V Machine Manager

0
0

I have a newly installed 2012R2 server. I am running four (4) virtual machines under Hyper-V. Every time I go to do something with setting on one of the machines, or create a new machines I get errors saying that I was unable to complete the job - no reason give, just fails.

I have found that if I go into services and restart the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service, everything works for a period. I have noticed that the VSSWriter for Hyper-V goes off line with a failed (8) on the vssadmin list output. At this point my backups also start to fail and I get 'Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)' errors in the event log for all four (4) VMs.

I have checked the versions of integration services using the powershell script from the virtual_pc_guy archives (sorry, the system would not let me embed the link here) and all show as up to date.

I have also checked and all VMs have at least 90GB of free disk space.

This is frustrating me no end and is delaying the upgrades to our other two (2) servers currently running Hyper-V under 2008R2.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
