Trouble with P2V'd guest on 2012 R2 Hyper-v server

Good evening,

I am hoping someone will be able to assist me with a couple of issues I've come across with moving a physical server to a hyper-v guest on a 2012 R2 host. I'm running into two different issues that have seem to make it impossible to work with the guest. Here is the background:

Had a 2008 R2 server that I used P2V to create a VHDX. Reformatted the server with 2012 R2 and installed the Hyper-V role. From there I created a new Hyper-v and used the VHDX I had created earlier. I created a NIC team with 2 NICS and have a 3rd one sitting by itself. When I created the Virtual switch I created an external network connected to the single NIC (here I am just duplicating settings for other servers that had the same role) and then configure the guest machine to connect to that external network.

Booted up the virtual machine and was able to login. Attempted to install integration services and reboot but kept getting BSOD and it just kept rebooting. Shutdown the VM and deleted it. Went back to my copy of the VHDX and recreated it with the thought that I would just RDP into it to finish the setup. However, when the server gets into windows, there is no network connection. Previously, this had the same NIC teaming configuration but the only NIC I see is the Virtual adapter, no "physical" nics appear in networking.

So, right now I have a VM with no network connection and I can't use the mouse to troubleshoot anything within the OS. Anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

Thank you in advance!

Application using Multicast IP settings

Hi,

We are using SCVMM 2012 R2. I have a windows 2012 R2 virtual machine which has two NIC (Live and Management), and is running an application which advertises to a multicast group ip address of 224.10.10.10 with a port of 31337, and the windows 7 clients are supposed to join this multicast group using the client application to listen for the server advertising packets.

However, the clients never receive any information from the server. I checked on the router and the server doesn't join the group. I've run a test program on the windows 7 clients with the ip address and port number above which sends an hello message to other clients running the client software which worked since it crashed the program on all those machines (they didn't know what to do with the hello message I sent them), so I know they are all listening and received the test data.

If I run another test program which has a server part which sends out a message (ip address above and port number), and a client test program (ip address above and port number), on the server to receive the message, this also works, since the client displays an hello message.

The part that doesn't work is the server sending out information and the clients receiving it (also tested with the server and client test app)

netstat on the server:

UDP    0.0.0.0:31337          *:*                                    3960

and on the client:

UDP    0.0.0.0:31337          *:*                                    5680

Previously we were using physical machines running windows 2003 with the same application and this worked fine. If I reboot this server, then check the router I see multicast information appearing.

If I run the following on the server: netsh interface ip show joins, it give the following information:

Interface 12: Live

Scope       References  Last  Address
----------  ----------  ----  ---------------------------------
0                    0  No    224.0.0.1
0                    1  Yes   224.0.0.252

Interface 13: Management

Scope       References  Last  Address
----------  ----------  ----  ---------------------------------
0                    0  Yes   224.0.0.1
0                    1  Yes   224.0.0.252
0                    1  Yes   224.10.10.10

The 224.10.10.10 appears on the management NIC which seems incorrect since it should appear on the Live NIC which has a default gateway configured (Management does not)

Are there any special settings I need to set on the Hyperv client? How do I get the multicast group to bind to the Live NIC.

I have set the live nic to be first in the list to be accessed by network services and IPv4 binds before IPv6.

Thanks.

Connecting to Virtual Machine Management Service Hangs...

We have 2 identical servers:  Dell PE 1950's with Dual CPU's and 32 GB's of RAM, running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edtiion.  They are connected up via iSCSI to a Dell MD3000i Storage aray.  Both of these servers are experiencing issues with the Hyper-V Manager / VMMS service.  The VMMS service seems to hang.  Both of the hosts say:  "Connecting to Virtual Machine Mangement Service..."  It never connects, even though the VMMS service is running and the VM's are running as well.  Both servers have multiple guests / VM's on them and the VM's will work.  When and if the Hyper-V Manager connects to the VMMS service and I try and connect to a VM or shut it down via the Hyper-V Manager - the VM doesn't respond.  The VM will act as if it was given no command.  However - I can RDP into the VM and shut it down and/or reboot it without problems.

Ideas?

now i want to installed one more Virtual machine but i don't want to join to domain and i planning to assign another network for it. which i am going to connect the network not the part of domain network.

the thing is i don't want to access from new virtual machine to any of my domain servers.

DFS and Active directory not syncing after moving to Hyper-V 2012 Server

I moved our PDC (Server 2008) from a 2008R2 host computer to a 2012 host. Since then all of the DFS and AD replication has stopped. I have a feeling it has something to do with the virtual switch on the host server. Has any one else had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 new VM with ISO in DVD boot failed - default SCSI not IDE

Hi, have created some VMs fine on 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V but now onto 2012 R2, am using the Gen 2 VM and hitting install error when booting them from the 2012R2 RTM .ISO (downloaded straight from Technet) loaded into virtual DVD:

I see from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/53f901e4-5bd0-4e13-80a2-bca2f57b15e9/hyperv-unable-to-boot-from-cd-or-iso-in-vm-machine?forum=winserverhyperv that Hyper-V seems unable to boot from a synthetic SCSI until guest OS actually installed - so Catch-22! But I can't add an IDE Controller because it's not on the list:

I tried the Integration Services and it seems fine on the Settings (including ticking the only one unticked - Guest Services) although if you need to run them from the DVD, it has the same problem - you can see them loaded (or the Win2012R2 ISO) in the DVD Media but you can't make them run through booting on SCSI!

The physical drives are SATA not SCSI but presumably no matter as Hyper-V runs SCSI virtually, but why does Hyper-V default to SCSI and how do I get the DVD to run off an IDE instead if that is the way to install a base OS from .ISO? Or is there an easier way than all this?

TIA, Phil.

Hypervisor not started...

Running Hyper-V Server Technical Preview 2. Created a virtual machine but cannot start it because the system says the hypervisor isn't running.

I have a BCD entry to automatically start the hypervisor (bcdedit /set {current} hypervisorlaunchtype auto) but no matter how many times I restart, the hypervisor does not start (verified by Coreinfo.exe). I have Intel-VT and NX bit enabled in the BIOS so everything is in order to start a VM but I can't.

Any advice?

Virtual Domain Controller

Hi,

I have a 2 node Hyper V cluster joined to AD. I have a physical DC which hosts my PDC emulator, RID master and Infrastructure Master roles. My other DC is virtual.

Issue is, live migrating the Virtual DC to the other host fails with a timeout message. My guess is that because it is on a CSV then it is unable to authenticate during the move process. I am using Kerberos for Live Migration.

Any ideas why the virtual DC wont live migrate. FYI it does migrate with "Quick Migration" option.

Perfmon or resource meteering?

Hyper-v servers = 2012 R2 (core)

I want to make sure that my VMs are getting the resources it needs. If I want for example, monitor RAM on my VMs, I would setup perfmon inside my VMs to monitor memory usage, correct? If any VM is running low I'll just simply allocate more RAM.

My confusion comes when monitoring CPU. What I've read so far is that I cannot monitor the processor counters inside my VM. I need to monitor from the Hyper-V host itself, correct? If this is the case then I imaging I would use logman, perfmon command line utility or do I use VM Resource Meteering instead?

For now I want to focus on the VMs and not the Hyper-V host. I want to make sure the VMs are getting the resources it needs.

Best regards.

What are the reasons Hyper-V might not properly apply the Automatic Start Action in Settings?

Win 8.1 Pro, Hyper-V v6.3.9600.16384

I have set a VM for "Always start this virtual machine automatically".  But when Windows and Hyper-V start up, this machine is not starting.  I have alternately tried going back to a different setting for startup and coming back to auto start thinking it might reset some internal 'switch', and I have tried 0 and 30 sec delays wondering if there are delayed services, but I don't know what those might be.  But I would think when Hyper-V starts, it should be fully ready to go.

I have Hyper-V also running on another machine (Server 2012 R2) and it behaves properly.  Of course the only time I shut down the server is for software updates as required, but when I do that, Hyper-V automatically starts all its VMs per the settings.

What things can I look at to determine why Hyper-V is not starting the VM automatically on this Win 8.1 machine, and what might I do to fix this problem?

Thanks.

Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V - Merge in progress for one of the VM's stuck in progress...

This morning I powered up the Hyper-V Server and found one of the VM's running on it to be  shutdown and not running.

I deleted the previously taken snapshot and the VM started showing the status as 'Merge in progress...' and it's stuck at 6%.

I do not know what to do. I tried restarting the machine and it would not allow me to do so and throws a message tha the merge is in progress.

The current state is:

  • The virtual machine is shut down.
  • the Hyper-V console says the machine has one snapshot dated dec 2014.

I'm afraid to try anything right now because I don't want to corrupt the files.  Could someone please suggest a fix for this?

I want to power up the server at the earliest since it's a file server and client needs it to be up urgently. The data size is about 552 GB in size.

Is there a way to check the status other than the progress in the hyper-v console?

The other VM has no issues and is running fine.

Please wait for the Local Session Manager

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 server running in HyperV.  After a reboot, it will not boot all the way up to the login screen.  It gets stuck on "Please wait for the local session manager" and never gets any further.  The server has very little configuration, it only has one application installed on it. I really do not want to have to rebuild this server.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?

Timeout error on Hyper-v replica

Hi All,

Scenario & Problem:

We have Primary Site ConfiguredHyper-V Cluster also enabled Hyper-V Replica feature successfully with all its required configurations. (Hyper-V Replica Broker, Firewall, Allow Replica on Replica Server)

It was all going fine and machines are properly replicated.

From few Days back replication stopped and going in critical stage I just removed replication and try to re-replicate again these VM’s, Enable VM Replication Wizard successfully completed in which you mentioned the required settings but after that on final step an error comes (Screen Shot Attached).

Troubleshooting:

  • I just check the basic connectivity between Primary and Replica Servers (Proper Ping Response)
  • Restart Replica Server
  • Change to Replicate VM’s on another Server (But Same Error Comes)
  • Checked firewall Hyper-V settings on Replica Server
  • We Use Port 80 for Replication of VM’s

Using Windows 10 Hyper-V Manager to Manage Hyper-V Server 2012R2 Hosts

$

Hello, I just upgraded my machine to Windows 10 and now my Hyper-V Manager cannot connect to and manage our Server 2012R2 Hyper-V Hosts. I get the following error.

"An error occurred while attempting to connect to server xxxxx. Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server."

I've read in multiple places that Hyper-V Manager in Windows 10 and Server 10 will support managing Server 2012 and 2012R2 hosts. I'm not sure why it's not working though.

Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 10 Build 10240 Managing Hyper-V on 2012 R2 Datacenter Cannot Connect

$

So, we have a total of six Hyper-V servers in our environment. All six were installed from the same Server 2012 R2 Datacenter ISO. I have been managing these from my Windows 8.1 machine with no issues. I got ahold of Windows 10 build 10240, and I am running into an issue connecting to the servers now.

The strange thing is that I CAN connect to one of them. I cannot figure out what is different on this one server from the other five. Windows updates maybe? I migrated all the VMs off one of the servers I cannot manage remotely, performed all Windows Updates, and I still cannot connect to it.

I am reading that Windows 10 should be backward-compatible with managing Hyper-V on 2012, but on connection, it appears a WMI namespace is missing that the Windows 10 tools are trying to connect to.

I am not trying to use alternate credentials (I read this will NOT work from 10 to 2012 R2). Any ideas why this is not working? Several Google searches have not told me anything so far. I realize Windows 10 has not officially been released yet, but a few of us are testing the waters for compatibility issues.

I would appreciate any help anybody can offer.

hi, i got an sbs 2008 virtual server running a database and some services and i would like to ask if it is possible to move the sbs server to a new hardware physical machine and transform the vhd to a physical drive.

Is that possible? moving from a virtual server machine into a physical machine with different hardware between them?

Export Import of a running VM between 2 Hyperv fails with Corruption message

$

Hi All,

here is a very strange issue.

I had to recover a failing 2 nodes HyperV 2008 R2 cluster. I do not know the history of this environment.

The issue is that several VMs do not move to node 2 and the customer ended up adding VMs directly in node 2 without using CSV.

I dowscovered an SCVMM deployed on an additionnal hardware. The agent was deployed on node 1 but not on node 2. However SCVMM was complaining about node 2 not responding. Has it been deployed once ? I could not find any trace of SCVMM in the registry and on the disk. I finally remove it from node 1 as we will move soon to a new 2012 cluster in a new domain.

I tried to export VMs installed locally to the CSV and then Import them again to put them back on the cluster here is what Happens:

  • if I export the VM from Node 2 and import it I can live migrate it ok between node
  • If I export it from Node 1 and import it, the live migration start then reaching almost 98 % it fails. On node 1 it state that it has been cancelled externally ! On node 2 it says taht the VM config is corrupted
  • I tried exporting from node 1 to import on node 2 it states that the VM configf is corrupted
  • I tried creating new VM on node 1 and one new on node 2 and succeeded in importing each of the newly created VM on the other Node

I noticed the the Config file shows different IDs but do not know if it is normal or not

I attached 2 config file DC203 move ok between nodes whereas DC201 does not !

Thanks in advance for any help

Cheers
