NIC Teaming and no internet access on host server

0
0

Ok, so I have setup NIC Teaming, but my host server does not have internet access. It seems that the NIC team is setup and working properly. If I go into NIC Teaming, the status is OK. Go to Adapters and Interfaces, they both show OK. NIC Teaming was setup with 2 physical NICs. I go to Network Connections and see TEAM1, which is the virtual NIC created. But I don't see most of the services bound. I don't see IPv4, IPv6, Client for Microsoft Networks. I also see another NIC called vEthernet (Hyper-V Team). That is where the static IP address is setup and getting no internet connection. If I open Hyper-V - Virtual Switch Manager, I see Hyper-V Team using Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver.  I have 1 VM running and that is getting internet connection.

The Hyper-V-VMMS Log Contains Event ID 29414

In our Hyper V 2012 (non R2 !) environment, the hosts are reporting errors like the below....

'9E0348EA-1374-481B-A3C1-1F2672DE1DD3' failed to create scheduled task based on information stored in the respository: Unspecified error (0x80004005). (Virtual machine ID 9E0348EA-1374-481B-A3C1-1F2672DE1DD3)

------ There is no real VM with this UUID.. Maybe a deleted one..

Question I have is :

Should I worry about the above?

If not, how can I stop the error being created in Hyper -v vmms log?

Cluster Shared Volumes with 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 Standard edition servers for VM failover possible?

Hi,

My client has two HyperV server running 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 both Standard edition

I was hoping to setup a Cluster Shared Volumes using a Synology iSCSI drive and have the VM hosted there so that if one server goes down i could easily create the VM hosted on the dead server into the other.

I found out that the failover feature isnt enabled on the Standard edition? is there a similar alternative for this scenario?

Otherwise i could simply attach a isolated iSCSI drive on each server, and when one fails attach the dead server iSCSI drive on the other and create the VM manually, this require more time though

Hyper-V Integration services versions

In our environments we have windows 2003, 2008, and 2012. Our Hyper-V servers are on Windows 2012 datacentre, but it is non r2. System centre VMM (SCVMM) is also SCVMM 2012 (non R2).

(1) Windows 2003 are running IS (integration services) version 6.2.9200.16384, and they cannot be upgraded to any version up .. (Already running the current version message

(2) Windows 2008 are running 6.2.9200.16433 and a small minority are running 6.2.9200.16384 which I can upgrade to 6.2.9200.16433 .

(3) Various Windows 2012 are running 6.2.9200.16384, 6.2.9200.16433, and6.3.9600.16384. Bizarre thing is that, I can upgrade those servers running 6.2.9200.16384 TO 6.2.9200.16433 only. When I try to upgrade the version from 6.2.9200.16433 to 6.3.9600.16384 , I get the message like "you are running the latest version". Why is it? Is it normal?

An error ocurred while attempting to change the state of virtual machine XXX.

Hi guys,

I'm getting this errors trying to start some VMs. If the parent is restarted, they work again.
I have found no particular reason: a working VM after a Windows restart (in the child partition) stop working, stuck at "Starting 50%" and gives this error.

Ideas?

Thanks a lot!

Dynamic Memory is not working all the time

We are in the process off moving our 2008R2 VM's from the 2008R2 HyperV servers to new Server 2012R2 Hosts.

We shut down the VM's copy the files and VHD's to the new CSV's en import the VM in the Hyperv Manager. Then we make them high available in the Failover Cluster Manager (Configure role - Virtual machine). We mount the integration tools and update the VM to version 6.3.9600.16384

For a specific type of VM (mostly RDS Host servers) we always had Dynamic Memory configured (when they were hosted on de 2008R2 platform), so we are using the same settings on the 2012r2 platform. The memory settings were;

Startup memory: 1024 MB

Minimum memory: 1024 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

These VM's reboot every morning, this is done for specific reasons. But now once in a while (once per week/2 weeks) we notice that the VM's are not using more memory then 1024 MB while the demand is much higher. Rebooting the server helps most of the times, live migrating to another host also helps. In the VM we see that memory usage in the taskmanager is 99-100%, and after the move it immediately starts using more than the minimum configured amount.

Until the failover the memory usage was 1024 MB and it did not get any higher.

This happened several times. Last week we changed the Memory configuration to:

Startup memory : 2048 MB

Minimum memory: 2048 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

But this morning we had a call about the performance of one of the VM's, We saw that it was only using 2 GB memory while the demand was much higher. After live migrating it to another host it started using more memory immediately.

The 2012R2 hosts are not overcommited, there is a lot of memory still available for the VM's. Those VM's never had this problem on the 2008R2 Hyperv platform.

Any idea why this happens?

server 2012 hyper-v vSwitch performance is terrible

0

Running an HP DL380 G5 single quad core with 8GB of ram.

OS is on RAID-1 146GB 10k rpm SAS

VM's boot from EqualLogic SAN on 24 900GB 10k rpm SAS via iSCSI at 1Gb/sec (as a test lab)

Host OS is Server 2012 with hyper-v role (all updates)

Client VM's are all server 2012

I have been running bandwidth tests between VM's on the same node and have noticed that no matter what I do I cannot get the vSwitch to push more than about 2.0Gb/sec between VM's. I am using iperf as a test to generate bandwidth.

I have tried between 2 VM's, I have tried 3 VM's pushing to 1 VM, I have tried 2 to 2, but no matter how I structure the tests the overall aggregate bandwidth between all the VM's never exceeds ~2Gb/sec over the vSwitch.

Suppoesdly the vSwitch is a virtual 10Gb/sec adapter so I'm wondering why I can only push 20% of that traffic. I'm using iperf because it doesn't require disk I/O to test bandwidth because I want to eliminate the client OS or the SAN as the bottleneck.

Can anyone provide help on getting more performance out of the vSwitch?

Lose access to one Hyper-V host

Hello,

I am trying to troubleshoot a slow network access to the outside world.  My Sophos UTM machine sits in a VM on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Server Core Hyper-V host with 3 NICs.  One NIC is for the host administration on the 192.168.1.x LAN switch along with all the other Hyper-V hosts.  The other two NICs are for the guest VMs, one connected to the ISP WAN, and the other connected to the internal network switch.  Prior to installing the VM with Sophos UTM I could use the Server Manager from one of the other servers to manage all the Hyper-V hosts.  After I installed the Sophos UTM software, Server Manager is unable to connect to the Hyper-V host that the VM is on.  I am able to RDP into the host, and have run Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup "Windows Remote Management" and Enable-PSRemoting.  Server Manager has refreshed multiple times and shows Manageability as Online-Cannot get event data.  Trying to remote connect into the Hyper-V host with Event Viewer does not work either.  If I delete the VM, everything comes back to working fine, minus the internet connectivity.  This has not only happened to me with Sophos, I had the same issue with Windows Server 2008 and a TMG VM.  I would like to look over the logs to see if the network issues are related to Hyper-V or the hardware.

I'm getting a couple of errors when backing up the VMs:

VSS writers inside virtual machine failed to perform BackupComplete to its shadow copy (VSS snapshot) set: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF).

I have Server 2012 R2 as the host with all updates and the VM is also 2012 R2 with all updates to include the most up to date integration services. I do have replication on and it replicates every 15 minutes. I haven't had this error before until about 3 weeks ago then it started every day. Please assist.

2012 R2 Hyper-V VM Disk 2 has been surprise removed | An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation

I have been scouring the internet for over a week now, and I cannot figure this one out. Some background... I am retiring an old physical file share server, and I am creating a new 2012 R2 VM on a 2012R2 DataCenter Core Hyper-V host. Creating the VM went without issue. It is configured as follows:

8GB RAM

4 CPU Cores

72GB system drive (C:\)

2TB data drive (D:\)

12GB page file drive (Z:\)

I have about 1.8TB of data to copy over from a physical box, so I am using RoboCopy. I have gotten about 1.5TB of data over, then the new VM's data drive (D:\) disappears and the copy fails. The disk no longer appears in Windows Explorer or diskmgmt.msc. The even log shows many event IDs 153 (The IO operation at logical block address 0x*** for Disk 2 was retried) and event IDs 51 (An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation, and the last event when the drive disappears is a single Event ID 157 (Disk 2 has been surprise removed).

After racking my head over this for several days, I deleted the VHDX for the 2TB data drive, created a new one, and started the data copy all over... same issue. I completely deleted the VM and all files, reinstalled on new VHDX drives... same issue.

This leads me to think it is an issue with the Hyper-V host, but there are no event IDs pertaining to this, and the other 53VMs are running without issue.

I would SINCERELY appreciate any help with this.

Sorry for huge post, but thank you in advance!

Hyper-V 2012 R2 replication networking question

0

My question is specific to Hyper-V 2012 R2 replication and what network it replicates on.  Does it use the management NIC, Virtual switch/Hyper-V NIC team or can be controlled?

I would like to enable replication for 2 VMs between two Hyper-V hosts, but ideally I would like to create a private subnet/direct cable connection between these hosts and have replication traffic remain off the switch/network.  Is this possible and if so, how would it be configured?  Is it as simple as using the "Allow replication from the specified servers" and adding my private server IP address/subnet in that box?

How to enable a second NIC on Windows Server 2008

Hi, I'm running IIS off of one NIC on a Windows Server 2008. I want to add and run off of a second NIC. I have been googling around and came up with the following, but I don't know if it makes sense. Can someone tell me if I am right? I am not sure about metric either:

netsh interface ipv4 add route 65.654.688.0/24 interface="75.5.125.105" metric=1

physical disk not found after windows update July 2015

server:one HP DL380G5, one DL380G7

os:Windows 2012R2 with Hyper-V enabled

I set the VM to use physical disk. There are four servers (two G5 and two G7) having the same configure. Yosemity Backup software and McAfee Antivirus are installed on the host servers. SQLServer 2012 express is installed with Yosemity Backup software.

It was working well before the windows update July 2015.

After restart to apply windows update, the VM cannot find the physical disk on one G5 and one G7. But the other G5 and G7 are OKAY.

There is error 12660 "Cannot open handle to Hyper-V storage provider" in the event log. The solution provided by MS is reinstalling the windows.

VM's are stuck in cluster

Hi all,

We have 3 nodes HyperV failover cluster on Windows Server 2012 R2. DELL's EQL storage connected to all nodes by iSCSI and mapped as single CSV volume.

Resently we have faced serious performance problems with VM's in cluster. VM's are very slow or hang (Ping are ok, other connections are very-very slow or unavailable). Moving VM from node to node fix the problems for a small period of time but it hangs again.

Not clustered VM's that stored on local drives are OK. We don't see any errors or warnings on NICs or on Storage. Storage load is normal.

Sometimes there are disk queue peaks on guest OS (0 and then peak to 50 or somtimes to 100 and 0 again).

There are no abnormal events on host servers.

Also I have faced that VHD's are readed by System process (see screnshot). There are a lot of reads and 0 writes. VM's can be even turned off but reads are high. Is it norman?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I have Server 2003 x86 installed on Server 2008 x64 Hyper-V. I have been trying to upgrade Server 2003 to 2008 standard, but it freezes at first boot after installation with just a mouse icon in the center of the guest window.

The steps I have taken:

Make a copy of original VM in case of disaster.

start up copy

uninstall powershell 1.0 and hyper-v guest add-ons/drivers

insert tested Server 2008 standard x86 iso and start upgrade installation

install success and reboots.

Windows load screen, goes black, mouse icon appears, hourglass icon appears momentarily.

screen stays black with mouse icon with no change even next day.

Can't Delete Mystery Virtual Network Adapter with No Name in Hyper-V 2012 R2

0
0

We have a  2012 R2 2 node Hyper-V failover cluster and have a node with mystery network adapter I can't get rid of.  I suspect it is a remnant from when we had to remove and replace some of the adapters when we updated some Intel NIC drivers.

  • Every once and awhile, the adapter will show up disabled in the Network Connections list with the same name (CSV) as an existing vNIC
  • If I refresh the Network Connections window, it disappears, however, running a get-netadapter in PowerShell, it shows up in the list with a blank name
  • In Device Manager, it is shown, along with a mystery "Virtual Switch Extension Adapter" (not even sure what that is)

Since it has a blank name, I can't figure out how I would delete it using PowerShell.  If I try to uninstall it in Device Manager, it won't uninstall (probably because it's virtual.)

If anyone has any advice how to get rid of this it would be great.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I have an Ubuntu running about 15 months on Hyper-V when suddenly its stops working, saying "The storage where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual hard disk sharing.".

So, I deleted the VM and VHDs, removed Hyper-V, added again. Removed all config files under ""C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V". But the problems stills. I don't use clustered servers and have nothing related installed.

Tried to create just a simple VM, but the error persists.

VSS Writer failures during Hyper-V backup of VM with Oracle application installed

0

I am trying to backup a VM which before it had Oracle installed backed up with no problems.  It is a Windows 2008 R2 server which sites on an 8 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster (with CSVs).  I am using DPM 2012 R2 to run the backups which have been successful for the last few weeks but then Oracle was installed and the backups have failed since then.

The job fails and a large number of VSS writers go into a 'Failed' state with the 'Last Error' showing as 'Timed out'.  I then get 4 popups appear each referring to a 'temporary' drive which appears briefly in Disk Management with a RAW file system.  These pops say "You need to format the disk in drive X: before you can use it.  Do you want to format it?" (where X: is replaced by the drive letter assigned to each 'temporary' drive).

The System event log is populated with a large number of warnings with Event 51, Disk, stating "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk<number>\DR<number> during a paging operation".  There are also a few warnings for Ntfs (eventid 57) stating that "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log.  Corruption may occur."

Prior to these warnings there are 5 other warnings for partmgr (eventid 58) stating "The disk signature of disk <number x> is equal to the disk signatuire of disk <number y>" and 4 errors (eventid 1, VDS Basic Provider), "Unexpected failure.  Error code: 490@01010004".

There is a script which is run to stop the Oracle application on the server and if this is run then the backups will complete successfully.  We have been troubleshooting this by running a certain amount of the script and seeing which part affects the backup and it seems that if the Weblogic (wls_reports) service is stopped then the backup will succeed but if it is running then the backup will fail and the above symptoms occur.

Another point which may help is that there is a pre-production server which resides on a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V standalone server, has the same scripts and installation of Oracle but backs up without any issues.

I have experienced VSS writer failures before with VM backups but I have not seen this before.  It is not intermittent and I can find no work around to alleviate the problem of having no backup (except stopping this service or shutting the server down, but as it is a production server this is not practical).

I have also posted this into the WSB forum under the following which may have further useful info:

VSS Writer failures during VM backup of server with Oracle application installed

If anyone has experienced this before or have any suggestions / advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris
