Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'Machinename': Incorrect funciton. (0x8007001)

When enabling replication on several VM's, I receive Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine "virtualmachinename": Incorrect funciton. (0x8007001). However this error doesn't happen to all VM's and it isn't related to any particular host.

I've traced this down to a VSS error, however when running ">vssadmin list providers", I receive the following indicating there are no errors:

Dear Hyper V Expert,

I am using windows server 2012 standard for my hyper v server. Currently we have 4 VM inside. However, suddenly one of my VM has only 16 colors when I connect it via the hyper v manager, while others VM are OK. the VM is using the Windows Server 20008 R2. I tried to convert to .vhdx and open it on another hyper v server, the issue still the same. please find the picture below:

Thanks.

VM short network loss

We have just setup a new Hyper-V situation on a Dell R730 and we are having a problem with (what seems to be) network connection from 1 VM to the other. Both VM's and the host are Server 2012 R2, 1 Fileserver and the other one is a terminal server. On the terminal server there are 2 application that use database files on the Fileserver. After some time (can be 30 minutes sometimes 2 hours) the application give an error about losing network connection to the database. The share where the database is saved is still available and if you restart the application it works fine again.

Both VM's are on the same virtual switch, ping from the TS server to the fileserver shows no loss at all.

We also have a old desktop machine (Win 7) still running with the same application that use the same share, they never lose the connection so it seems that the problem is in the traffic between the 2 virtual machines or on the terminal server itself.

Is there anyone that can maybe point me in the right direction?

Windows 2012 hyperv guest missing network connection after restore from backup

I am testing restores of a small hyperv windows 2012 server with the typical one host, two guest os (dc and apps) setup. However the DC is not handling DHCP, or any other normal domain controller tasks (this is lab setup which is not fully implemented). All three OS's have static ips. The backup is performed on the host server. When I restore to a different computer the only place it falls down is that the hyperv guests don't have any connection to the network. The settings on the hyperv manager side look like they do on the original box, but inside the guests in network properties there is nothing listed in the adapter settings area. I've tried twice with the same results, both windows server backup and a third party backup product. Both original and restore pcs are workstations not server boxes; and they are not identical. What I'm attempting is so routine that I suspect the solution will be simple.

I have tried removing the virutual switch on the host, adding a new external virtual switch, removing the old virtual switch from the vms and adding the new switch to the vms, but it has not helped.

I have an on premises Hyper-v 2012 R2 that is replicating VMs to Azure ASR.

I get random error during the day that stop replicating

Where can i get info on this event ID or where can i get the provider logs?

Hyper-V network card problems

Guys I put together a basic Hyper-V lab on Windows Server 2012 R2 in order to learn Hyper-V. The problem I'm running into is network cards. For my ESX lab I use the Intel Pro 1000 PT which works great. I installed a Pro 1000 PT in my Hyper-v systems I am able to use native teaming with no problems it works very well. The problem starts when I create a team and attach the team to a virtual switch. The Hyperv host becomes unstable and starts crashing constantly. So I would like to ask what all Intel or Broadcom nic are you guys using that is stable?  BTW I even converted the PT1000 to an Intel I350-T2  and disabled VMQ and SR-IOV still same problem the host crashes constantly. I don't have much experience with Hyperv thus the reason I want to learn it all of my experience is on ESXI. I am shocked that Hyperv seems to be so picky when it comes to network cards.

iSCSI or SMB 3 - What is better ? - Backup perspective

$

I´m considering a very very (very) low budget project, using 2 Hyper-V Nodes/Hosts and 1 Windows File Server.

All stored on 1 or 2 TB SATA disks, only ONE basic CPU per machine and lots of network adapters available.

There is a lot of discussion about features, performance in comparing iSCSI/SAN or SMB 3 to store the VMs

Now i´m tryingo to decide wich is better, based on backup/restore/recovery with 2 main applications in mind: ArcServe R16.5SP1 ou Veeam8 (i heard about Veeam 9 coming soon)

In my toughts, maybe ArcServe couldn´t get backups done if the SMB 3 UNC pacth solution is chosed, and maybe Veeam is better.

But iSCSI looks like will be better if ArcServe is used

WHat are the prons and cons thinking only at the backup perspective, looking for granular restore, recovery for files, applications and VMs

Many physical disk to one in Hyper-V

Right now I run some server that I like to put them all in Hyper-V

But one is my own mediaserver that have many physical disk in RAID 0.

I have RAID 0 just to have one big harddrive for my files

I don't know what is the best way to do that in Hyper-V

Do I have to create 3 virtual harddrive of my 3 harddrives and then connect them to one server and then create a RAID 0?

I am doing something wrong

I have the hyper-v stand alone server installed but I seem unable to connect to it. I have installed a remote manager, but it does not seem to let me connect to the server.

The most I have achieved is to connect using remote desktop, but this just gives me the same view of the limited text menu I get directly from the computer hyper-v is loaded onto.

I see no way to actually install a virtual machine.

Can't see reboot progress in Hyper-V Manager

When I reboot a Server 2012 R2 VM, the virtual machine connection GUI immediately goes to a ctrl alt del screen displaying the date and time so you can't see the reboot status.

How do you turn off this feature?

The Hyper-V-VMMS Log Contains Event ID 29414

In our Hyper V 2012 (non R2 !) environment, the hosts are reporting errors like the below....

'9E0348EA-1374-481B-A3C1-1F2672DE1DD3' failed to create scheduled task based on information stored in the respository: Unspecified error (0x80004005). (Virtual machine ID 9E0348EA-1374-481B-A3C1-1F2672DE1DD3)

------ There is no real VM with this UUID.. Maybe a deleted one..

Question I have is :

Should I worry about the above?

If not, how can I stop the error being created in Hyper -v vmms log?

3PAR SQL Server best practice

$

We have some VM's running on Hyper-V with SQL Server 2012. The storage is a 3PAR SAN. The OS is installed on one VHDX and we have one VHDX for SQL Server data, where the data and log files are in the same directory. The VHDX files are on one CSV on the 3PAR and Adaptive Optimization is enabled on the CSV. Some databases are between 50-100GB big, but we also have a database of almost 1TB.

What is the best practice concerning placement of SQL Server data and log file and best IO performance? Does it matter that the data and log files are on the same VHDX or on the same CSV? For the 1TB databases we did created separate CSV for the VHDX files containing data files and log files.

VMs affecting Host

A couple of times I've noticed odd things happen on the Host caused by a VM even if the vNICs are not shared with the Host OS.

For example: If a VM is running Windows 7 and the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard is used, a drive letter is automaticallymapped on the Host as a removable drive pointing to the vhdx hard disk of the VM.

How is that possible?

DPM 2012 R2 Exchange Sync Schedule

Hi,

I would like to change my sync schedule of exchange protectiongroup and do not know how to set it up correctly.

My Backup contains hyper-v and exchange backups in different protection groups.
The hyper-v backup runs at 22:30, the exchange backup at 20:30 with hourly sync.
While the hyper-v backup is running the sync job of the exchange protection group fails.
My goal is now to set the hourly sync job with a exclusion from 22:30 to 23:30.

How can I do that?

Thanks.

With kind regards,

Torsten

Best Practices for settting up Hyper V.

$

I plan to have 3 servers go virtual.

I'm building a server and trying to figure out how to setup.

Was planning a mirror of 2 x  300 GB SAS drives at 10K for the Hypervisor

And a raid 10  of 4 x 600GB 15K drives for the datastores and storage.

Now I'm wondering if the 300GB mirror is necessary, if I install teh hypervisor on this should I put datastores on this too? and the storage for the data stores on the raid 10?

If I use the mirror of 300Gb for ONLY the hypervisor and all the OS installs and Datastores on the Raid 10, is 300GB overkill? I have been reading about others using flash drives for this, should I downgrade these to 146GB drives then?

Trying to save a few bucks.

Thank You,

VM Static MAC Address

$

Hi

We are using Windows 2012 Hyper-V and failover cluster to manage the VM's over 5 hosts.  One of the VM's requires a Static MAC address to hold onto licensing for an application.  From the VM I have changed the setting from Dynamic to Static MAC address.

However we have noticed that if the server is rebooted the licence fails and has to be redone again.  It looks like to me that if the sever is migrated to a new host it keeps the same MAC address but when is rebooted from the new host the MAC address changes.  Is this correct?

I have seen people talk about a pool of static address but this seems to be with SCVMM which we don't have.

Is there a way to keep MAC address the same over the various hosts?  Any suggestions or third party programs would be appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Hyper-V Replica Question

Hello,

I am new to Hyper-V Replica and have a few questions as listed below:

1. There are three volumes created on Hyper-V Primary Server C:\, D:\, and E:\. I have configured a VM and configured three hard disks as below:

-VHDX1 attached to SCSI controller 0 and kept in C:\ drive

-VHDX2 attached to SCSI controller 1 and kept in D:\ drive

-VHDX3 attached to SCSI controller 2 and kept in E:\ drive

On Replica Server, I have only C:\ drive created to hold data from C:\, D:\ and E:\ drive.

Question: Do we also need to configure D:\ and E:\ drive on Replica Server also?

2. In case of any failover to Replica Server, how VM is going to retain the same IP Address that is configured on the Primary VM?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi, here is my problem.

I've set up 3 hyper-v hosts windows 2012 R2 in a Cluster.  My problem arise when i try to backup my VM's with Veeam, i can take a crash consistent backup but when i try to use the "Application Aware Processing" it fails.

Here is the error reported by Veeam :
