removing operating system and data loss

I have an SBS 2011 server. I want to remove the operating system and install Hyper-v server 2012 r2. That will run as an operating system, correct? What I was wondering about is data? I have two drives on this server that contain user data. They are not drives that contain the operating system, they are physical drives. Will I still be able to see the data on these drives? Can I still make the data available to users? I understand that they will be in a different path with the change of the server name, but can I still map network drives to the data folders?

I read on thenetthatthe problem is virtualization of Domain Controller,I was wonderinghow tostart thething.

Different Hard Drive Sizes

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help. We are adding more storage to one of our exchange database drives as it is running out of storage space. I added the new space through Storage Manager. The drive was 1630GB in size and I increased it by 100GB to 1730GB and it displays as this on Storage Manager but when I go to Hyper V Manager and the settings for the Exchange server the hard drive displays as 1630GB and not the new size.

When I go into the server itself I do not have any unallocated space either to make this drive bigger.

I was wondering if there is anything I can do with regards to getting my space back and increasing the drive on Exchange as I am currently missing 100GB somewhere.

Thanks,

Best way to get CPU utilization using WMI is either "Load Percentage" or from "Performance Counters"

We like to understand, to get accurate CPU Load which is best WMI class to use? that is "Load Percentage" or "Performance Counters".

System Info:

This is applicable to all servers with and without Hyper Threading enabled.

Also like to know is there any better way to achieve this without WMI?

2012 R2 Hyper-V VM Disk 2 has been surprise removed | An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation

I have been scouring the internet for over a week now, and I cannot figure this one out. Some background... I am retiring an old physical file share server, and I am creating a new 2012 R2 VM on a 2012R2 DataCenter Core Hyper-V host. Creating the VM went without issue. It is configured as follows:

8GB RAM

4 CPU Cores

72GB system drive (C:\)

2TB data drive (D:\)

12GB page file drive (Z:\)

I have about 1.8TB of data to copy over from a physical box, so I am using RoboCopy. I have gotten about 1.5TB of data over, then the new VM's data drive (D:\) disappears and the copy fails. The disk no longer appears in Windows Explorer or diskmgmt.msc. The even log shows many event IDs 153 (The IO operation at logical block address 0x*** for Disk 2 was retried) and event IDs 51 (An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation, and the last event when the drive disappears is a single Event ID 157 (Disk 2 has been surprise removed).

After racking my head over this for several days, I deleted the VHDX for the 2TB data drive, created a new one, and started the data copy all over... same issue. I completely deleted the VM and all files, reinstalled on new VHDX drives... same issue.

This leads me to think it is an issue with the Hyper-V host, but there are no event IDs pertaining to this, and the other 53VMs are running without issue.

I would SINCERELY appreciate any help with this.

Sorry for huge post, but thank you in advance!

CPU performance issue hyperv 2012R2

Hi,

We're experiencing a weird issue in hyper-v 2012R2.

We have a dual socket Host with 20 cores total (shows up as 40 since hyper threading is enabled), There are 15 2008R2 TS vm's on that host. Only 5 of them are allowed to be under full load, the other 10 are running without users on them.

In order to utilize the hosts hardware, we've given the VM's 6 vCPU's each. Which would allow each vm to utilize 15% of the hosts total CPU processing power.

But in practice, they never use more than 8%, and we're experiencing performance issues/slowdowns in the VM's. While we're seeing the slowdowns, the other unused VM's are still fast.

The total host CPU utilization never exceeds 35~40%, the way we configured it, it should be allowed to go as high as 75%

Since the unused VM's still are responsive, this doesn't seem to be an issue of over utilization of the scheduler.

Could this be that because of hyper-threading, the calculation of resources is a bit of?

6 vCPU's of 40cores is 15%, but because hyper-threading is enabled, It's really 7,5%, of real cores that hyper-V uses to limit the max cpu time of those hosts?

Is this a correct assumption? And is it safe to set 12 vCPU's on the Guests, (numa issues perhaps). Or is it better to just disable hyper-threading?

Hyper-V virtual networking "VMware Bridge protocol" look a like

Hi,

I want to migrate a physical firewall (Pfsense) that I run at home to a Virtual machine. Since I have a serve 2012r2 here at home no problem at all.
Now, I have tested it with VMware Workstation and it went verry wel, but I want it all in a Microsoft package (easyer to manage). I'm playing around with the different network settings of Hyper-V but noticed something. Since the firewalls external NIC is directly connected to my wan, I don't want any control of the nic possible by the host.

So the question is, is there a way to accomplish that the hyper-V host doesn't have any control over the nic and that ist's just a "dummy nic" that passes thraffic to and from the (VM and NOTHING else). Kind like the VMware bridge protocol (if you set up a bridge adapter, only VMWare workstation can control it). Maybe I have to disable a couple of protocols, I'm not sure.. Because I couldn't find information about it online.

Thank you verry much!

I Have created a share in my  local machine and shared to full permission. And this share i need to create it as storage for my VMs.

When i trying to create the Vm in any of the host i'm getting the below error after giving the network path for the store.

"Failed to create external configuration store in \\xxx..the username and password is incorrect."

The share iam created is already mapped with the both hosts.

What might be the cause of error ,Please help somebody.

Unable to enable Hyper-V on Windows 10 build 10130

Hi,

I did a clean install of the Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10130.

After that, I tried enabling Hyper-V features (via the enable Windows Features). It said it required a restart and upon restarting, it gave a message at the boot screen saying that it is unable to complete installing features and is reverting. This is followed by two restarts and then I am able to login.

Please help me. I need to enable Hyper-V to install the Windows 10 Mobile emulators.

Thanks,

Ratish

Hyper-V VM Generation 2 - How to boot from .ISO

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Design Question (multiple same hostname guests on same host)

$

I just purchased a new powerful server and placed Windows Hyper-V Server (free version) on it (we do not have System Center).

We use already prebuilt images for student labs (consists of two servers that work together for an enterprise application).

One guest image has AD loaded with its own domain on the other is a client server. We have an automated system that copies the images and then imports then and fires them up.

The problem is they all have the same hostname and it even looks like they get duplicate ip addresses on the Private or Internal switch (only the external virtual switch receives dhcp, I am not sure how the other internal/private switches obtain their ip info). So if we place 3 students on the new server (6 VMs total [3 DCs and 3 clients]), The first two VMs appear fine but attempting to login to anyother DC results in the error: "The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted", I can only guess it getting confused on which is the real DC.

The host has 3 Internal Only switches and 1 External switch for internet access.

Is there a way to isolate each student's environment? I am guessing System Center can help but I am looking for other possible solutions.

Thank You, Joe

Logical processor Vs Cores Vs Threads.

I am trying to understand CPU architecture deeply like cores, logical processors and vcpus. For Cores I understood that in main physical unit the separate operation unit called core and it works as single CPU (correct me if I am wrong). Then what is difference between cores and logical processor ?

form online articles I read number of logical processors is equal to number of total threads, But as far as i know threads are subset of processes so but what thread means if it comes to hardware perspective ? Can anyone explain this !! My laptop has i3 processor with 2 cores..how OS calculated 4 logical processors based on number of threads.

Hello!!!

I know very little about hyper-V and need your guys help...
I know how to configure VM's on hyper-v and connect them in virtual network.. But now I want internet on my VM. How can I do that.

Tried below: -

1. I created External Virtual Switch

2. Connected it to "Intel(R) Ethernet Connections I217-V"

3. Went to mt VM Setting and in Network Adapter selected "External Virtual Switch" created in above steps.

4. Now for some reason after 5 minutes, my BASE machine Windows 8.1 (Physical Machine) is restarting with "Blue Screen of Death" saying "Unexpected Kernel Mode Error"

5. I restarts my PC. and again after 3-4 mins My whole Physical machine is getting restarted with same above Unexpected Kernel mode error.

6. This continues.. till I delete/remove the "External Virtual Switch" from Hyper V manager.

Tawsif Mulani

Dynamic Memory is not working all the time

$

We are in the process off moving our 2008R2 VM's from the 2008R2 HyperV servers to new Server 2012R2 Hosts.

We shut down the VM's copy the files and VHD's to the new CSV's en import the VM in the Hyperv Manager. Then we make them high available in the Failover Cluster Manager (Configure role - Virtual machine). We mount the integration tools and update the VM to version 6.3.9600.16384

For a specific type of VM (mostly RDS Host servers) we always had Dynamic Memory configured (when they were hosted on de 2008R2 platform), so we are using the same settings on the 2012r2 platform. The memory settings were;

Startup memory: 1024 MB

Minimum memory: 1024 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

These VM's reboot every morning, this is done for specific reasons. But now once in a while (once per week/2 weeks) we notice that the VM's are not using more memory then 1024 MB while the demand is much higher. Rebooting the server helps most of the times, live migrating to another host also helps. In the VM we see that memory usage in the taskmanager is 99-100%, and after the move it immediately starts using more than the minimum configured amount.

Until the failover the memory usage was 1024 MB and it did not get any higher.

This happened several times. Last week we changed the Memory configuration to:

Startup memory : 2048 MB

Minimum memory: 2048 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

But this morning we had a call about the performance of one of the VM's, We saw that it was only using 2 GB memory while the demand was much higher. After live migrating it to another host it started using more memory immediately.

The 2012R2 hosts are not overcommited, there is a lot of memory still available for the VM's. Those VM's never had this problem on the 2008R2 Hyperv platform.

Any idea why this happens?
