Hyper-V cluster network settings different in ipconfig and Failover Cluster Manager?

Hi

I have setup a Hyper-V Failover Cluster, with the following NICs:

Management - 10.0.0.0/8
ISCSI - 192.168.18.0/24
Cluster 1 - 192.168.15.0/24
Cluster 2 - 192.168.17.0/24

However, the FOC reports:

Management - 10.0.0.0/8
ISCSI - 192.168.18.0/8
Cluster 1 - 192.192.17.0/24
Cluster 2 - 192.168.17.0/24
Cluster 3 - 192.168.15/24

Shouldn't this listed config be the same in the NIC settings and FOC? I see this problem in both Hyper-V servers.

The way that the network is setup is there's one physical NIC and then I use add-vmnetworkadapter to add virtual NICs to the server(s) for the various roles.

Also, should the only disk visible in FOC be the witness disk and not the data disk? And how do I change the "active" node in Hyper-V clusters? Can I do active-active?

Thanks

Migrate guest from XenServer 4 to Hyper-V

We would like to migrate a couple of windows 2003 server and windows xp guest machines from our current XenServer 4 environment to Windows 2008 hyper-v.

The V2V utility only supports migrations from VirtualPC and VmWare.

What is the best way to migrate these guests to the new environment ?

Hyper-v slow SQL/disk

Hi,

I have a problem with Hyper-v and MS SQL.
The problem is that the queries are slow. I’ve made a test script that makes 100.000 dummy rows, the results are as following:

VM 1:
Host: Xeon 2620 v2, 48GB memory, 512GB SSD iSCSI (2 nodes CSV cluster, all nodes and data server same specs).
VM: 2vCores and 6vCores, 6GB memory.
Test takes 2.40 minutes.
SQL 2014 Std.

VM2:
Host: Xeon 2620 v3, 64GB memory, 512GB SSD RAID1.
VM: 6vCores, 20GB memory.
Test takes: 44-59 seconds.
SQL 2012 Enterprise and Std.

VM3:
Host: i5 4660, 8GB memory, 256GB SSD non RAID.
VM: 4vCores, 4GB memory.
Test takes: 42-58 seconds.
SQL 2012 Std.

VM4 (VMware):
Host: i5 4660, 16GB memory, 128GB SSD non RAID.
VM: 3 vCores, 4GB memory.
Test takes: 17 seconds.
SQL 2012 Std.

I’ve also tested with RAM Disk, those test are of course faster (Hyper-v and VMware). Beside that, one database is 22GB big..

One this that I noticed. In Task manager, when the test script runs I see the write speed of the disk going up to 2 mb/s, it won’t go higher.

Any suggestions to make it go faster?

Patrick

Hi,

We have started to get a lot of these errors in last couple of days. Is there anyone who knows what this is and how to fix it? We have Exchange and SQL server on this hyper-V host.

Thank you in advanced.

Deploying Hyper V on Cisco UCS (Converged networking in VMM or on hardware)

Hello Everyone

This is kind of a high level question and wanted to know peoples opinions on how to setup networking.  Currently we have a few clusters running on 6 1 x GB links and use converged networking to team all nics together and use VMM logical switches to split traffic up into management, cluster, live migration, and VM guest network which using Vlan tags to identify which vlan they are on.

With Cisco UCS we now have 10 GB networking and have the ability to split traffic up at the hardware level and still take advantage of shared bandwidth.  If i am understanding documentation right, I can carve up each nic into smaller Vnics and priortize traffic but still have the full bandwidth on link.

Just wondering what the pros and cons are for each setup.  The obvious one is moving converged networking to UCS is that it would take the network processing load out of host and into FIs.

Also we are using ISCSI with Nimble SANs.

Please let me know your thoughts and any hyper v best practices.

Thanks

Hyper-V Replica Between Same-Site Hosts Over Dedicated Network

I have (2) Server 2012 R2 hosts both with Hyper-V role installed. Both systems have (4) NICs. I have made (2) teams on each host and would like Replica\Migration traffic to go over one team and everything else over the other. I have read that this can only be done using certificate-based authentication. Is there a simple way to accomplish this? We don't have a CA in our domain.

Thanks!

Slow networking Performance between VMs on a single host or cluster

Hello,

We have a two server cluster running Server 2012R2 Hyper-V.  There are 8 NICs in each hosts two are teamed for Production LAN Access, two are setup for live migration, and two are setup for iSCSI communications to a Dell PS-6100.   There is one external switch configured one each host, with the same name, and allow management operations check box is checked.  So far we have not had any issues and this configuration has proven to be easy to manage and very reliable.

We have an RDS Farm with two RDS Hosts, RDS Broker Licensing Server, and RDS Gateway, the farm is up and running well.  We also have 1 AX 2012 Application Server and 1 SQL 2012 Server that hold the databases.  Shortcuts to launch AX are pushed out via group policy.

When we connect to the RDS Hosts and run internet explorer, excel, word, or what ever local app performance is very snappy.  When we launch AX 2012 and try work in it performance is very poor and that's the issue we are chasing.  Yes we do know AX 2012 is somewhat of a pig.  Directly on RDS Hosts performance is good with local apps.  AX performance is poor across the board.

I did notice that all VMs show 10Gbps NICs.  So in theory as long as the RDS Host, AX App Server, and AX SQL Server on on the same host they could be communicating a 10Gbps however, as soon as they go across hosts the max speed would be the 2Gpbs link between the hosts.  Is that correct?

We tried to keep the configuration as simple as possible.  Is there something I am missing as far as networking goes?  I have read several articles on Hyper-V Networking, I liked this one the best http://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/the-hyper-v-virtual-switch-explained-part-1/, and think we have networking built out correctly.  Does it seem like it and can anyone offer some suggestion to possibly improve the configuraiton?

TIA,

Jim

Windows 2012 hyperv guest missing network connection after restore from backup

$

I am testing restores of a small hyperv windows 2012 server with the typical one host, two guest os (dc and apps) setup. However the DC is not handling DHCP, or any other normal domain controller tasks (this is lab setup which is not fully implemented). All three OS's have static ips. The backup is performed on the host server. When I restore to a different computer the only place it falls down is that the hyperv guests don't have any connection to the network. The settings on the hyperv manager side look like they do on the original box, but inside the guests in network properties there is nothing listed in the adapter settings area. I've tried twice with the same results, both windows server backup and a third party backup product. Both original and restore pcs are workstations not server boxes; and they are not identical. What I'm attempting is so routine that I suspect the solution will be simple.

I have tried removing the virutual switch on the host, adding a new external virtual switch, removing the old virtual switch from the vms and adding the new switch to the vms, but it has not helped.

I am running a ASP.net website on Windows 8.1 with IIS. I could access my website all morning. I did not make any changes. By afternoon I could not access my website. If I ping my IP address or my website I get: Reply from 192.168.0.3: Destination host unreachable. I am new to networking. Can anyone give me any help in resolving this problem?

Hyper-V - VM Fibre channel disk missing at restart

Hi there,

We currently have a customer with a Windows Server 2012 (NOT R2) Hyper-V Failover Cluster. On this cluster we have 3 virtual machines. Each VM runs smoothly as you would expect.

We also have an HP SAN. We used the Virtual Fibre Channel adapters to mount LUN's directly to the 3 VM's. We did it by adding the MPIO role on each VM, and it worked fine. We have 3 VM's with 3 lun's mounted.

However, if we restart a VM, the LUN dissapears. I found a workaround to make it appear again. I Move it to the other node and back again, and the disk appears again. But after a restart, again the LUN goes missing. We can't just keep manually move a VM everytime the LUN doesn't appear, this isn't normal.

Mind you, there are absolutely no errors that i am aware of. Nothing red appears, the lun just doesnt appear until i failover it to another node. Is there a service i should delay on the VM?

Any ideas?

License question for hyper v on Win Server 2012 Standard R2

$

I have read there are licensing restrictions with Hyper V for each Windows server 2012 R2 license, now I am confused as to weather this means the Windows Server license on VMs as in you can use it on a VM aswell as the host machine or it actually how many VMs you can have running anything (i.e. Linux).

I basically want to run  5-6 Linux VMs on my Windows Server 2012 R2 using Hyper V, is this allowed or does it break the licensing restrictions? Do I need the data centre as I can see you can have unlimited VMs on that?

Thanks for any advice, new to Hyper V as used VirtualBox in the past.

Restore WIM of a physical computer to a Hyper-V Virtual Machine

$

Hello and thank you in advance for any help or suggestions

We have a laptop system which contains a lot of important functions (SQL Database, etc) and we have captured an image of the system using the command line imagex tool. The WIM file is saved on a network share.

I tried to use imagex to apply the wim file to a virtual machine and I am having problems getting the virtual machine to start. The machine starts and begins to load Windows, but quickly blue-screens and restarts. I have attempted to run startup repairs tools to resolve the issue without success.

I would like to know if someone has suggestions about how to apply this existing wim file to a virtual machine. The physical computer cannot be sysprepped or modified and if possible I would like to use the WIM file I have already created, I think I am missing a step in the process.

How to monitor the real memory usage inside a VM with dynamic memory enabled

$

Hi all,

we host an azure pack featured vm cloud. One of our customer complains that he cannot correctly monitor the used memory of his VMs (the others dont monitor it) because of dynamic memory.

The VM starts with 16 GB of memory and as it is a fresh installed server it obviously doesnt need that much RAM, so Hyper-V takes the memory back by filling it with it's baloon which results in the monitoring system alerting that the memory is full.
The task manager also shows the memory as 98% full, but if you look at the processes, you cannot see any process that fill up the RAM.

Now we can lower the amount of memory the VM gets at boot time, but that only masks the problem.

As we dont want to disable dynamic memory, can anyone please tell me how a customer can correctly monitor the used memory of his machines from INSIDE the VMs?

Thanks!
